System goes read only, after reboot all is fine for a day or two

OK, so here's the problem, I got a new PC, all fanless, SSD hard and all.
Works well for a day or so, then goes read only. For example - I come back from work, type something in the terminal and I get Input/Output Error. I cannot reboot, it says Input/Output Error as well.
So I hard-reset it, it boots up, everything is fine again for a day or two.
The HDD is Corsair CSSD-F40GB2, the MB is Gigabyte H55N-USB3, proc i3 540,
The / and /home are both ext4 mounted with defaults, noatime, discard.
I tried with/without discard.
I also tried changing the SATA/power cables - same results.
I also tried enabling/disabling features in BIOS like DMA/SMART/AHCI/compatibility stuff - same results.
Here's a dmesg I managed to get (errors are near the end).
http://pastebin.com/vJfdW90z
And here's a smartctl -a /dev/sda:
http://pastebin.com/eQxASEBM
Any suggestions are welcome. Also is there some diagnostic app for Corsair SSD that I can run and check the drive?
Cheers.

Well I don't recall how freshly booted, it was the only time that the system was read-only - giving input/output error to everything but dmesg was working so I saved it all to pastebin.
The system is a PC so I never tried anything else different from poweroff/reboot (works fine).

• [solved] Ext4 goes read-only after nodealloc

Hello.
I've been trying this many times, but never succeed with using my partitions powered by ext4 file system with nodealloc option in fstab. It doesn't matter, if I add this option after defaults or replace defaults with nodealloc only. After reboot, all ext4 partitions (/ and /home) goes read-only, so I can't do anything with Arch, not even change fstab back. There are no problems, if I put other options to fstab (for example: relatime to ext3 file systems).
Anyone have same problem?

Whoa! That explains everything. I will try one more time.
EDIT: Yeah, this is it. It's nodelalloc, not nodealloc...
Thanks

• After moving iTunes, external drive sometimes becomes read-only after reboot

I had some system corruption a few weeks ago, and had to restore my system. As part of that prolonged effort, I decided to move my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library to external FW800 drives.
I had terrible problems initially with these drives mounting read-only. I found a relatively quick work-around, and that seemed to fix the problem. But I still have them periodically mount read-only, and I can't D/L iTunes updates, etc.
Why do they keep doing this on a reboot? Very frustrating, as I need to reboot as part of the fix, and I'm always in the middle of something else, and can't reboot at that time.

Oh, as part of this, not sure when the change was made, OSX used to keep the mounted volume name in /Volumes, even if the volume was ejected. Would cause an occasional problem - but very rare. I notice now that ML seems to create/delete these mountpoints automagically - and that's part of the problem. They get incorrect permissions when the volume mounts, and I (user I'm logged in as), can't write to the volume without some background shenanigans.
My process is this:
Unmount problem volume
Drop to terminal, and "sudo mkdir /Volumes/<mounted_volume_name>"
Remount volume via Disk Utility (you now get a "<mounted_volume_name> 1" - with CORRECT permissions)
Unmount the volume again
Remove the created directory (i.e. undo step 2)
Remount the volume - 99.9% of the time that seems to fix it.
Reboot to be sure - and it stays for a while - then at some point becomes a problem again.
Not sure if it's something in ML that's an issue - or something in iTunes or iPhoto (but can't see how they would affect the permissions when the system reboots and you login)

• S2disk stops working after laptop has been on for a day or two

Hey,
Running s2disk usually works flawlessly. However, I've discovered that after maybe a day or two, or three of the laptop being on (being put into a hibernate whenever I travel) hibernate stops working. There will be no error message on the screen when it runs, neither will there be any errors that I spot in /var/log/messages or /var/log/pm-suspend.log if I try pm-hibernate.
What happens is the screen goes blank and starts showing the s2disk messages, then it says that it's compressing the image, then it just pops up into my normal desktop environment.
The only difference I've seen on the screen between a successful hibernate and a non-successful hibernate is that the non-successful one never says "compressed image to ..... "
Thank you for your time
Edit: On a similar note, which may help to solve this, a similar thing happens when I s2ram (although they don't coincide - right now I can s2ram but not s2disk). When I s2ram it works but immediately wakes up without me moving the mouse, hitting a key, etc.

• My external Firewire drive keeps coming up as read only after reboot.

Hello everyone,
I have a perplexing problem that just cropped up yesterday. I have an iMac (9,1) running Mac OS X 10.6.7. I've had the machine about a month now. I have an external 500GB Firewire 800 drive that holds all my iTunes music files. This was previously an internal drive in my G4MDD that I installed in an external exclosure I got from OWC. It's an EZ QUEST enclosure with an Oxford chipset. The drive is formatted Journaled HFS+, and I had reformatted it and copied all my files back over using Carbon Copy Cloner when I installed it in the enclosure. The drive is set in the Get Info window to "ignore ownership on this volume", and I have read/write permissions on the drive and the enclosing folders, including the iTunes folder. I can read the files, just not write to any directory on the drive.
Everything had been working as expected until yesterday when I started up the Mac and went to download a Podcast. The Mac informed me that it couldn't download the file because I didn't have write permissions. I checked the drive in the Get Info window, and everything was set correctly, but I noticed that I couldn't change the ownership options, as they were grayed out.
I fixed the problem by running DiskWarrior 4.2 on it, and rebuilt the directory. After that the drive was fine; until I started up today and was faced with the same situation. I was able to fix it again in the same manner, but would like to get to the bottom of the problem. A few other bits, the drive was recently defragmented with Drive Genius 3.1, and both that and DW and Disk Utility say the volume is OK.
I've been using Macs professionally and at home since '93 and this is my 5th Mac since that time. So I know my way around them, and I'm stumped!
Any ideas?

• Everything is read only after reboot?!

after installing arch and awesome it worked fine Ive done this before, however I have 4 harddrives 1 internal 3 external, I went to fstab and added the internal, did the uuid=numberwhatever, ntfs default 0 0 and it worked fine, but when I restarted I log in and try to do startx and this is what happened and I have no idea what to do.
what doesn't make sense is it worked fine without restarting and the drive let me read and write to it, also my swap is a 0 0 if that matters..i searched on the net and no one is having this issue so there are no helping leads anywhere ive seen
http://postimage.org/image/n6885q3ql/

ok so I found out it is my fstab entry, here is how I have it , this is a ntfs 2tb drive internal http://postimage.org/image/idgd21mfb/
how I found out this was the issue is, I commented it out, rebooted started x and it let me in, so this concluded its my addition to fstab now I just don't understand what I did wrong.

• External drive goes read only with error -50 after time

Running the special release of 10.8.2 for Mac Mini (2012) that was recently released. I have two external USB drives. The first contains my iTunes collection and the second is my time machine backup disk. The iTunes drive seems to go read only after it's been mounted awhile. I can read files off the drive, but I can't make any changes. I can't delete files nor edit them.
If I try to do anything with the disk including a repair permissions or disk on it, I get an error -50. The only way to get out of this state is to unmount the drive and remount it forcibly or reboot.
Anyone have ideas on what is going on or experienced a similar issue?

I did a little more research and there are quite a few people who've seen this error. I don't think it's the drive.
I suspect the controller in the enclosure, a jmicron 0x2336, is responsible for my problems. It looks like Linux and FreeBSD both had software updates to work around bugs in the controller. If OS X did not get updated, it would explain everything. The drive sleeps and then won't wake up fully and OS X marks it as in error and goes read only.
The enclosure is a Thermaltake Silver II USB + esata. It looks like a lot of people have had similar problems with them. I saw posts on macrumors, adobe's support forums, etc.

• Make all text fields read only after signing form

Hello,
I have a live cycle form which needs to have all of the text fields set as read only after signing.
The java script has been placed in the post sign event of a digital signature field.
for(var i=0;i<this.numFields;i++) {
var cNm = this.getNthFieldName(i);
if (cNm.type = "text") this.getField(cNm).readonly = true;
After signing the form the following console error is shown:
this.getNthFieldName is not a function
Can anyone please advise how to revise the script so that when the form is signed all of the text fields become ready only?
Any assistance will be most appreciated.
Thank you.

You don't need any JavaScript to do this.
In Designer you can setup the signature field in that way, that all fields will be locked after signing.

• Filesystem goes read-only

Hi, all
Yesterday, OVM Server3.1.1 was crashed. due to ovspoolfs.img was corrupted. I recovered ovspoolfs.img.(but OVM Manager didn't recognize that server.)
Main problem is that Filesystem goes read-only. I checked out /var/log/messages. but There are no disk errors or I/O erros.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or any solutions?
Thank you for your help.

Thanks for all these great tips!
As R00KIE pointed out I don't have a good backup system. I think I will go to my computer shop next monday to fix some good backup drive, because this quite scared me actually.
As for now I acted as follows:
Reboot, try to remount /srv and /opt [they are on the same disk].
Result: Bulks of errors. Lots of "soft resetting link" and "link to slow".
Another reboot, which kicked me in single user mode. I was had to remount / and was able to alter /etc/fstab, so that /srv and /opt were not mounted by default.
Shutdown system, open the casing.
Clean internals with vacuum cleaner. Unplug all harddisk cables and plug them back again.
Fire up the system. Mount /srv.
Try to make backup of important data on /srv.
This seemed to work, and there are no errors anymore. Probably some cable was loose, somehow. But I still do not really trust the situation, and will fix some backup routine.
Thanks again for all the tips and tricks. I will definitely run some extra checks and utilities from now on!
jocom
P. S.: Running "e2fsck -f -y -v" on both /srv and /opt says everything is fine. No errors, no bad blocks.

• Filesystem mounts as read only after boot

Hi!
I have checked the wiki, the forum posts and poked around on the web but haven't found anything helpful.
I have just installed arch on my laptop, and after boot the file system is read only.
Where do I change it so that it is mounted as read write after initial boot up?
Thanks for any help and pointers!

Onwards: That did work. with rw I can read and write. Thanks for the help!
But there is still something that fails early on just after the kernel has been loaded, iit's in the stuff that comes after udev being loaded but the info scrolls by much to fast for me to see.
Thats what I want to take a look at but I can't find it in /var/log, I'm not sure what that part of the boot up is called so I don't quite know where to start looking for a log of that.
EDIT: I have now found the reason for that the inittab stuff doesnt log anything at all ever. Seems like I have to hack the scripts to get som logging features in there. I am fairly certain that its the inettab stuff that doesn't reload the filesystem as it should. I'll get back with the modifications I'm contemplating on making on the inittab scripts to enable logging. Found som e interesting stuff on IBM developerworks that describes the nessecary modifications though its for a RHEL system not Arch.

• Filesystem mounts read only during reboot [solved]

Hi folks,
after shredding my last Arch installation I'm trying to set everything up again using the new released image.
generating the /etc/fstab file by
genfstab -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
creates the following code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
# UUID=6c76fc7c-45d9-43e5-8530-7d098a58ca76
/dev/sdb3 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
# UUID=8ac179e7-b291-440a-839c-0fd476abcf1c
/dev/sdb2 /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2
after rebooting I get the message:
fsck.ext4: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb3
Possibly non-existent device?
and my file-system is mounted as read-only.
after changing the /etc/fstab by gaining rw-access using "mount -o remount,rw /" to
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
I once again get the file-system mounted as read-only. I would appreciate your suggestions on how to get rw-Access each reboot.

• Make a field required on record creation, read only after that

Hello,
Does anyone know of a way to make a pick-list field required on record creation, but read-only after that? The other twist to this is that we need to allow this field to also be read-write for all the integration edits, since this field's value could change in the enterprise database.
Thanks,
Neal G.

Hi !
I think you can add a validation rule for that. Something like :
IIf(PRE('<YOURFIELD>') IS NULL, <> '', = PRE('<YOURFIELD>'))
This means that if the previous value of your field is null (it's a creation), so the value must be different than blank. Else, it must be equal to the previous value, so not modified.
I didn't tested it, but I let you get back to me if it works... or not !
You'll just have to add a message saying that this field is required on creation and readonly after...
Hope this will help, feel free to ask more !

• Word 2010 document becomes Read-Only after saving it

Hi,
My Word 2010 document is becoming "Read Only" after saving it, for information my doucment is on the desktop . I searched on this forum and find a couple of solutions (deactivating auto saving, etc.) but it does not work at all. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Sylvain.

, I wonder why the docuemnt is becoming Read-Only when I am saving it on the Desktop...
I've read articles and blogs of people arguing each side of whether you should use the Desktop as a storage folder and I really
don't have anything substantial to add to either the pro or con side of the issue.
However, what I know about Word is that it behaves a bit different and seems to have issues when you’re actively editing document that are stored
on the Desktop. I would speculate that the issue has something to do with the screen driver software.
When you’re editing a document, Word is actually using something like a dozen or more temporary hidden files and some of these are stored in the
same folder as the source document. If the source document’s folder is the Desktop, then there has to be interaction with the screen driver.
This interaction with the screen driver is one variable that makes the Desktop folder unique and possibly problematic and thus Word under certain conditions
makes the file Read Only.

Dear Regina,
Have you tried to set_block_property in pre-record trigger to update allowed/not allowed depending on the event. And in post-record update not allowed. These triggers must be on block level. Also on item level to the item 'Comment' define pre-item trigger where take a new decision whether you want to open the entire block or not, the same way as on block level triggers. But in post-item trigger always make the entire block read-only again.
