System hangs and TWAINBridge, SystemUIServices and Activity Monitor in Lion

The past few days, my system has been starting to lag and hang a bit. I noticed that there are dozens of instances of TWAINBridge in the activity monitor, in fact right now there are 135 with a new one popping up about every 20 seconds. Each on eusing @ 100 MB of VM.
I also noticed SystemUIServer taking upwards of 11-12 GB of VM
I have 8 GB of physical RAM install.
Occassionally Fetch hangs as well and is taking up over 100% of the CPU ...
I've run Onyx, and cleaned/rebuilt/cleared caches/restarted a few times, but after a while things start slowing down again as the TWAINBridges continue to fire up over and over and the SystemUIServices swells to greater numbers.

In case some one else experiences this ... it looks like it was my Canon scanner. I've unplugged it and the instances of TWAINBridge are not happening, and the SystemUIServer file has been steady at around 85 MB; and the system has not been hanging or unresponsive.
There's no Lion update for the scanner driver, so I still need to resolve part of this issue, but thought this might help some people out there.

  • RAM and Activity Monitor questions M.B.P. Is sOoOoo slow and I just don't know where to start..RAM and Activity Monitor

So I am really unsure where to start but I def need a little help getting to where I want to be or feel I should be.  I understand that I am pretty much filled when it comes to the RAM on this machine but I need to figure out how to lower it.  I back up my machine about once a week which is longer than I would prefer but due to the way Mavericks has been acting I cant deal with the long backup process.... WHY?!?? may be your response to that and I will fill you in.  My external Hard Drive is a 1tb Lacie and its about 2 years old.  In that time I have dropped, lost, threw and slept ontop of it.  Causeing minor damage (each time) to the casing.  So now becomes rather hot and I kinda dont want it to burn out.  When I first updated to Mavericks the backups were fast and went along mb by mb...now though, the updates drag out for 3-5 hours and update kb by kb.  Tried some of the "solutions" posted on here but none seem to work any more than me consistantly purging my system while the backup happens...kinda why I dont have time to do it everyday like I'd like.
ANYWAY can someone please fill me in on a way, program, application, anything that will help me lower my RAM?  Because in the spirit of honesty I just dont have the extra funds to snag some new RAM or another HD.  I am almost at the point of saying "F**K IT" and wiping everything off the computer so its as close to empty as can be and manually, one by one redownloading what I want/need.  But I dont have the time to accomplish that either.  PLEASE lend me your ear and help a brudda out with some information from that exceptional brain of yours.
Below is a copy of my machines "report" from EtreCHECK and I am including screen shots of what the (Mavericks) Activity Monitor currently looks like in ALL PROCESSES.  PLUS it kinda seems that I have WAY TOOO MANY processes going on in the ACTIVITY MONITOR and have NO clue how to lower the amount.    Will truly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way.
        THANK YOU

Mavericks is designed to use as much RAM as possible. Free RAM is wasted RAM... it's RAM that's not working for you, not doing anything helpful. Seeing your RAM full is not an indication that there is a problem. Seeing your memory pressure graph spike would be.
As for the performance issues, see my Mac Performance Guide.

You should probably try to weed some of that out, if possible, or at least make sure it's all updated and compatible with Mavericks.

  • Slow Mavericks and Activity Monitor Uselessness

The recent Mavericks update may have improved performance to some degree, but I'm still experiencing unusual slowness of apps often.  One of the most irritating things is that the one app I except to help me shed light on the cause of the slowness, Activity Monitor, typically shows NO unusual heavy system load when I observe apps being slow.
For example, I click on + in Safari to create a new tab.  I expect immediate response, an immediate new tab being open.  Instead, it takes maybe 5 seconds, perhaps even 10 seconds.  So, I immediately switch to the Activity Monitor window to see if I can identify what might have caused the slowness.  I think that maybe the CPU become extremely overloaded during that brief period.  But I see nothing in Activity Monitor to clue me in as to what the problem was.
To me, this means Activity Monitor is not monitoring relevant activities.  I don't know why Safari is slow opening at tab, but whatever it is doing should be an activity that Activity Monitor monitors, since it obviously is something that takes the machine a lot of time to do.
Could a knowledgeable person in Apple's software department respond here and say something about why opening a new tab in Safari takes so long?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Getting messages "startup disk is full" and activity monitor is showing "syslog d" is using a lot of CPU.  I'm planning on getting more memory for my late 2008 model Macbook but wondering if there's something that is causing problems that I can also fix.

I had closed out of all of my programs but heard the internal fans running so I checked the activity monitor.  It shows syslog d as the top process using the CPU right now.  I have no idea what that means.
I read a thread about the startup disk being full and how you can free up memory.  I have an airport extreme so TimeCapsule is backing up everything.  I do have a bunch of pictures on iPhoto on the laptop;  could move those to another location but I'm a little gunshy.  I know they are on the TimeCapsule but I would like to save them to a second place before deleting from laptop just to be sure.  I went through several things yesterday and emptied trash, etc.  I wasn't able to locate the hidden files that the thread about the startup disk being full was referencing --- they were talking about large emails that were causing processes to happen taking up the CPU.... I wasn't able to find out if that was the case for me.
Also I'm going to look into getting another 2MB of memory and installing it on the Macbook, so I can upgrade to the latest OS.  Anyone have an idea if that is worth the $$$ over buying a new laptop?  Or anyone have ideas as to where to buy memory, etc.
    Any ideas - help!

  • Mac OSX Mavericks - System Hangs and Slowdowns

    Hey guys,
I'm new to these forums so apologies in advance:
Anyway: I updated to Mavericks a few weeks ago and I have been experiencing hangs and slowdowns across the system.
The beachball is very common for relatively mundane tasks and things just take a lot longer to complete.

    Any suggestions?

I've read in other forums that there are two issues that is causing this problem of chopping audio and freezing interfaces.  One has to do with USB 2.0 /USB 3.0 issues in OS.  The other seems to be an issue with the Fusion drive.
The fix for the fusion drive issue that has been shared online is to either:
Option #1.  Don't use the fusion drive and create an external boot drive clone (either SSD or standard HD) and use as your primary drive (completely surpassing the internal fusion drive).
Option #2.  Split the internal fusion drive.  From there you can use them as two separate logical drives.  Load your OS on one of the drives (SSD or HD).   http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html
Before, you do any of the above, make sure that you backup your current system setup.
I just received my imac (2013) with 3TB fusion and I plan on trying option #1.  I bought a 3TB external USB drive which I plan to clone after I have the machine running.  Once I clone the internal drive, I will test how the machine runs from both the internal fusion and the external to prove if this addresses the audio clipping/stopping problem.  Hopefully, Apple will find a fix for this.
It is really a dissapointment that a brand new $2500+ machine and software was not tested to perform something that my 2008 MacBookPro and my home built Window XT machine (circa 2003) did without issue.  I wished that I would have checked the forums about these issues before I purchased the machine.
You can do some searches online and find even more detail discussions on this topic.

  • [Solved] UEFI. System hangs on boot after successfully activating swap

    Alright.
    Unnecessary Background:
I've been using Arch for years. I just bought a stupidly good computer with a bunch of specs that I don't think are relevant, except for the fact that I am using an X99-pro. It has RAID support, but I am not using that currently. I bought all the parts and finished constructing it this morning (I live in Japan, so that was a while ago). Normally, I have no problems with installation; however, I wanted to do this one UEFI mode. After booting into the live disk, I checked to make sure everything was working as it should. Arch recognized my graphics card, most of my ram (one of the cards is a bit finicky for some reason), my SSD and HDD, along with the built-in WiFi (although it is an annoying broadcom one, so I need to install the driver separately later). Now, there are plenty of sources of error in here:
    Problem:
I got through the arch installation and tried gummiboot. It would hang every time after successfully activating swap. I tried grub, too, but had the same problem. Because gummiboot is much less cumbersome, I switched back to that. Interestingly, systemd will sometimes recognize my drive twice before activating swap, and if I edit my fstab to ignore the swap completely, it hangs on the next step with is mounting the boot partition. I would like to point out that because I am not able to successfully boot my system, I cannot provide the exact messages for you guys, which may pose a problem.
    Solutions I have tried:
    1. Chrooting / mkinitcpio -p linux
    2. modifying fstab / removing swap from it completely
    3. fresh re-install
    Sources of error:
    1. Construction. Everything seems appropriate on the live usb, but maybe there is a problem in which ports I used for the SSD and HDD
    2. UEFI. It could be that UEFI just doesn't like mounting multiple things and freezes up when put on the spot.
    3. Legacy. It could be that this is not a problem with UEFI or my construction, but something I missed in the installation.
    Additional info:
    Partitioning scheme:
    sda1: ~500MiB boot / EFI partition
    sda2: ~4G swap
    sda3: ~110G /
sdb:   ~2T, untouched (for storage later)
I apologize for any typos and hope it was readable. I am super exhausted and going to take a nap. I'll check back in on this in the morning.

    Please post the output of:
    # gdisk -l /dev/sda
    lsblk -f
And the contents of your gummiboot loader.conf and arch.conf (or whatever you've called it).
Post the output of the commands after you have mounted all your partitions and (arch-)chroot'd into your system.
You can use wgetpaste to post the outputs, as described by @ewaller here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1500528
Alternatively, pipe the command output to a text file and export it (using a live distribution or a USB stick).
You should remove swap from your fstab -- systemd mounts it automatically anyway.

  • W540 - System hangs, and have no idea what is going on...

Any heavy load on the W540 seems to hang the system with NO indication that the system is still working.
As a sample, in editing PDF, doing large dabase analysis or statistical work, the system does not respond in the window doing the work, sample view, and this was for a book of only 1000+ pages.
I can work in other windows, but my active tasks shows nothing is happening.  If I leave the system alone, it may unlock after a period of time.
Similarly when I back up the system to the network, I have no idea when the task is complete.  The W540 just sits there with the sign on screen.  I need to periodically log on to see how much task remains to be done.
When I connect a USB 3 drive for the back up, I can see the light on the drive letting me know when working and when finished.
Any workaround for this black box with no indicators?  Maybe an audio 'bong' or ring when unlocked, or finished?

  • Sun 7210 Storage System - SFTP and Active Directory

    Good Afternoon
I have recently acquired a Sun 7210 Storage System which I have joined to my Microsoft Windows Active Directory domain. I have also specified the required LDAP Directory Service details under the Configuration tab. I am fairly sure these are correct as I can add a Directory user to the Users part of the device.
What I am having problems with is having my Windows A/D users connect to their shares via either HTTPS or SFTP. They are able to use the shares fine with CIFS and/or NFS.
The only user that can connect with SFTP and HTTPS it the local "root" user on the appliance.
Do people know if Directory users are able to use SFTP and HTTPS to access shares?
My current O/S on the 7210 is 2009.04.10.1.1,1-1.9.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help.
    regards

    Stephen,
I ran into this same issue yesterday with SFTP. Unfortunately the answer is that the storage system does not authenticate to AD for local logins (for which FTP, SFTP, HTTP qualify). I placed a support call yesterday to Sun on this matter and was given this information as well as the fact that there are no current plans to do so.
You have taken the functionality one step further by "tricking" the system into using AD as LDAP. I'm not sure it's truly compatible, but that was my next step as well. I was also going to experiment with creative id maps to see if I could make it work. Unfortunately, I've found that if you take the system too far from it's designed use, strange things can happen. I'm not sure that is a chance I want to take with home directories or other "secure" information.
Let me know how you fare and I'll do likewise.
    Eric

  • System hanging and red optical light

Posted this before, but I thought it had gone away.
From time to time (usually when waking from sleep - though not always), applications such as PhotoBooth and iMovie hang (spinning ball) and red optical out light comes on.
Last time this happend I tried to close the applications down, the window goes but the menu bar is still visible but inresponsive, and the program does not get removed from the dock.
Attempts to force a quit do not work.
However, I recently had a number of other programs running, Word for instance. This is not affected by the behaviour of the other applications, neither was Google Earth, which I was able to load and quit while the other apps were not responding. I was also able to quit from Pages without a problem.
So it seems that it might be linked to PhotoBooth and or iMovie. It is annoying because you can't even force a shut down as it refused to terminate these programs. You have to hold down the power button. The interesting thing is why the red optical light would come one.
The machine has all the latest updates.

I have a similar problem. Yesterday night i used my MacBook with external speakers and since then the optical out has been red and I can't get any sound through the internal speakers.
I tried turning the laptop off but it doesn't do anything, the optical port will go red as soon as i turn it on. I can't control the sound volume anymore except when I plug something in the audio out port.

  • Why does my system hang and require a power-cycle?

My macbook air just stops. The trackpad, mouse, keyboard are all inoperable. The cursor does not change to the "I am busy color wheel". We have reset the SMC controller once on a suggestion from Apple support. This happens regularly and we are getting REALLY aggravated at the lost time and data.

Not so. You use the recovery mode to reinstall Lion. Details in Recovery and About OS X Recovery. Also, see Computers using Internet Recovery.

  • Afterupdating to firefox4 cannot access webpages and when I try the system hangs and only clears with reboot but access is ok with internet explorer

have tried uninstalling and then re installing but no joy. when I open firefox I can search as normal but as soon as I click on a site to open a page the screen freezes and I cannot access any other programs either

    Leigh...
but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

Seems to have trouble with my photoshop elements catalog... I have over 18000 pictures.    Is this too large.   It contains many camera raw, * dng elements.
Do I need to break this up.
    Mark .

    John T Smith,
At this point I disagree with your suggestion to move this question over to the Photoshop Elements forum - although that could easily change when the originator provides additional information.
I think that it is really important to first know the answer from Mark (the thread originator) to these questions that were asked by Steve Grisetti. Then we can make a recommendation for additional  troubleshooting
What do you mean by "pull pictures from the catalog"?
Which program are you pulling them into?
For example, I might guess that this wording implies that pictures are being placed in the Premiere Elements Timeline or Sceneline. If that guess is correct, then I doubt that posting on the Photoshop Elements forum would help.

  • System crashes and reboot. Montain Lion.  Problem Report

My computer keeps crashing for no aparent reason. One thing i have noticed is that it crashes when i use gestures. Gestures like the Mision control. Gestures that interact with the whole screen (changing desktops and stuff). I am not sure but it does that when im listening to music. Wierd i know but maybe it can help.
If anyone could help me with this it would be awesome. I can varely work now. I got used to gestures so whenever I use one it crashes, the whole screen goes black and the last sound keeps repeating itself for like 10 seconds until the computer reboots itself.
Thanx in advance for your time.
Here is the error report that gives me when the system is rebooted. Maybe it can help.
