System hangs on restart (shutdown works fine)

I using Gnome 2.30 and kernel 2.6.34, on a ThinkPad T61. When I try to reboot my sytem either from the terminal or with the Gnome shutdown dialogue, it seems to shut down fine, I see the LCD power off, and then it hangs right before it should reboot to the BIOS. I have to hold the power button down to shutdown the system and then restart it.
I tried reboot=b and acpi=force in the menu.lst, but this did not help.
Ubuntu 10.04 (dual booted) on the same system does not have this problem. (It's kernel 2.6.32.)
Restart in Arch used to work fine until recently (sometime in the last couple weeks).

Just found that using kernel26-lts (i.e. 2.6.32) resolves this problem. Any chance of making reboot work with 2.6.34?

  • I guess I didn't explaine that I have a healthy operating Windows 8 Boot camp partition on my hard drive. When I upgraded to Mavericks I am no long able to access the bootcamp partition from the disk icon in system preferences; the Windows 8 works fine.

On both Mini Mac and iMac 27" I am no longer able to utalize the Startup Disk icon in System Preferences; the Windows 8 on Bootcamp partition works fine if I close the Mavericks OX and select the Windows partition at bootup from the hard drive. My question is why don't the icon in System Prederences work anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks. Also, Users & Groups, Printers & Scanners icons no longer work either.

  • System.out.println makes things work fine????

I have a case where vector hasto be populated based on some condition. It is in a for loop. But it throws null pointer exception when i try to access the elements in the vector as its empty. So to check that i gave a System.out.println to check the values at the point of inserting the elements into the Vector. At this point it starts working fine.I got this problem 2-3 times.I checked if i missed out something. But that was not the case.A System.out.println was causing the values to be inserted into the vector. I then removed the SoPs and tried. It worked fine.Any Idea??????????this is causing headache for me.I am using eclipse and tomcat4.1 with jdk1.4.2

Honestly roshan, "I checked if i missed out something" and similar just isn't
    enough.
You need to post code. Not 1500 lines but a small example that others can
compile and run to observe the behaviour that you observe.
Constructing such an example often helps in solving a problem. If the problem
goes away when you remove code that contains or calls the method in question
that's a sign of where the problem may lie (Even if that code seems to be
    irrelevent).
The task of constructing a small example like this is not always easy: but it's
useful for you and essential for others.

  • System hangs on reboot/shutdown after kernel upgrades

I've been experiencing the problem that, whenever pacman upgrades the kernel, the system hangs on reboot or shutdown.  It only happens on the first reboot/shutdown after a kernel upgrade.  I've noticed it consistently for a while now.
    To reboot, I issue:
    # reboot
    To shutdown, I issue:
    # shutdown -h now
I should also mention that I typically reboot after kernel upgrades because hotplugged storage devices (USB, SD) fail to be detected unless the system reboots.  That is, devices plugged in during the upgrade remain usable, but plugging in something new appears in /dev.  There may be an obvious reason for it that I'm missing, but it's never bothered me enough to look into it.  Not sure if this and the reboot/shutdown issue are related, though.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When Apple Hardware Test says there is a problem, there definitely is a problem.
But like many diagnostics, it does not catch everything.
It can increase your confidence that you do not have gross flaws. The Hardware problems that remain may be more subtle ones.

  • Intermittent System Hang at Restart and Shutdown

    Hi Everyone,
I finally got around to upgrading my old iMac G4 to Leopard yesterday, and almost immediately found a problem that's driving me nuts...
It started right after I installed Leopard from the DVD using Erase and Install, and updated to 10.5.7 using the combo updater. After the combo install completed successfully, I clicked "Restart," and was immediately left with a blank desktop (just the wallpaper, no icons, no menubar and no spinning pinwheel/spokes on the desktop as some others have seen) and the cursor (which is responsive). It looks like the Finder and Dock quit, and the restart or shutdown procedure then came to a halt. Some keyboard shortcuts still work, such as the ones to open the shut down dialog box, and the force quit box--but clicking any of the buttons does nothing. The keys for brightness, volume and eject also still work. The HD was quiet, and after about 5 mins I held in the power button to shut down. After restarting, I opened Console and found no log entries at the exact time I clicked Restart--in fact, nothing logged until the next power up.
I restarted and shut down a few times after that, some while using Software Update. About half of those times, the hang occurred, and if there were any other open apps, they did quit along with the Finder and Dock. I decided to reinstall 10.5, using Disk Utility on the DVD to write zeroes to the disk before reinstalling. From there, I applied the 10.5.7 combo update--and from there the problem started again, and still apparently without any log entries. It's worth mentioning that I tried Leopard on an external FW LaCie HD connected to this Mac a few months ago (ver. 10.5.4 then), and the problem existed then as it does now.
Other tidbits: The internal HD I'm using is less than a month old, and worked well with Tiger. The Mac passed the Apple Hardware Test on the original install CD. Disk Utility on the Leopard DVD found no problems and no permissions errors. I've used the Spotlight prefpane to stop it from indexing the HD, and I have Time Machine turned off. I've reset the PRAM. There are no peripherals attached other than the keyboard and mouse. There is no third party software installed (yet). I've tried looking at the forums on MacFixIt, and using google, but haven't found an answer. Any ideas?
    Thanks for helping,
    Eric

Update... After trying to find the source of the problem for a three weeks, including trying another Erase and Install using Kappy's suggestions, only to have the hang continue to occur repeatedly, I gave up and decided that Leopard has an unresolved bug that causes these symptoms on my old G4 iMac.. With the iMac going to Vintage status this month, I decided to reinstall Tiger on it, and it's future is now going to be life as a wireless print server.
I bought a new Mac Mini with 10.5.6 preinstalled. Since the new Mac has a lot of software installed that I won't use (print drivers, languages, Garageband, iWeb...), I did an Erase and Install on the first day, and used the Combo updater to go to 10.5.7. Within a few hours of use, with no 3rd party software installed, the hang I described happened again--the Mini showed the exact same symptoms as the old iMac. Thinking it may be something with the Combo updater, I did another Erase and Install, and this time used the Delta update to go to 10.5.7. Since then--about two weeks now--the hang has not returned.
As a side note to this, my parents own an Early 2008 iMac which shipped with 10.5.4 and was updated in March to 10.5.6 using the Combo updater. While helping them with it recently, it hung at restart--showing the same symptoms as my two Macs. This happened after they used it for about two months with no problems. I did an Erase and Install, and used Software Update to go to 10.5.7 (meaning the Combo updater was used). The hang hasn't happened again in the past two weeks.
With 3 different Macs now showing these symptoms, I'm convinced it's a Leopard problem, maybe something in the Combo updaters. I'm going to be updating my wife's Powerbook G4 to Leopard using a retail Leopard disc, and will have to use a Combo updater to bring it to 10.5.7. If the hang occurs with her Mac, I'll post a followup.

  • Why T400 always randomly hangs when restart, shutdown and sleep??

I'm a student. I used to open a lot of pdf, website, word. I need to spend a lot of time to adjust those software. so, generally, I just use the sleep mode. when I left the T400 a moment, the laptop will switch to the sleep mode. but I found the laptop usually hangs. I have to press the power button to shutdown it and lost all of working. It happend many times. which upset me. I have google a lot of website, but nothing is usefull---update driver, OS,active the security chip, anything.... which also happened randomly, sometimes it's stable, sometimes it happened 2 times during one hours..
    .anybody can help me??? thanks.
The OS is vista 32. update all drivers and hotfix.

Texas Mac Mans battery tutorial may help you.
Also, Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
    Cheers!

  • How to synch in the most recent version of iTunes - 11.0.0.163 - The latest version updated today and changed the look of the program. I can't see where to click to synch. If I disconnect and restart it works fine automatically, but why do that?

I updated the latest version of iTunes today and it has a new look. That's fine but I can't see where to click to synch my ipod after downloading music or podcasts. It was always easy.

It might make it much easier on you if you enable the sidebar in iTunes. Launch iTunes and go to View>Show Sidebar. With iTunes set up like that, it should look a lot more familiar to you. You can select your device name under the devices heading and then go through all of the iTunes panes by clicking on them at the top of the iTunes Window.
My screenshot shows my iPad, but it works the same way with an iPod.

  • TS3274 Ipad says "no Sim". have to restart and it works fine for awhile

Ipad says no sim. when I turn off and restart it works fine for a while then does same thing. cleaned sim and reinstalled.

Rather than just turning it off and on, try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons simultaneously, ignoring the red power off slider, until the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. This should not affect any content on the iPad, it is similar to rebooting your computer.
If that doesn't help, then the next step is to retore it to the factory settings. Then you can restore it to a previous backup (which may see the issue return) or set it up as a new iPad again.

The system was indeed hung but unfortunately there is no usable information here about determining why. Research the NETCONSOLE and NETDUMP (or KDUMP) facilities; these can help get log messages that may not get written to the storage media (/var/log/messages).
Also, keep a serial console or a similar feature like a putty session connected to the system console. You may see messages there that you cannot get anywhere else.
If you can, file a trouble report and get support help.

  • System hangs after leaving any window manager rebuild xorg?

Just did a full system upgrade and everything is working fine except when I leave ANY window manager like fluxbox or gnome, the systems hangs and will not drop back to console, the screen just goes black with a white horizontal line about the size of a cursor at the top of the screen. I also start my window managers from the console with startx. Anyone else had this problem? And now X is just freezing at random, very random and not all that often. Should i just rebuild Xorg?

This is weird. It's like it shuts down different functions one by one like the scroll, mouse, keyboard and other stuff that is related to gnome. It doesn't freeze, it just shuts down some functions that make it impossible to use desktop environment and now I've tried to turn off Compiz, Emerald and using the Clearlook theme but still it's the same thing.

Yes, I'm using Nvidia but its not the same error. My computer doesn't freeze.

Firefox 7 is forcing me to fill out a form field that isn't required. I've used FF on this site for years but when I upgraded to FF7 it no longer works. IE it works fine.

It's our internal applicant tracking systems (resume database). It works fine in IE and all previous verisons of FF but in FF 7 a bubble icon pops up stating that "Please fill out this field".
The field is not required but states "Require all of these words" if you to run a search based on those parameters.

  • 3D Axis System (bar type) doesn't work when there is only one z-channel

    Hello,
I have a problem with a 3D Axis System, bar type.
Everything works fine as long as the y-channel contains more than one value (meaning there is more than one z-channel too).
But when my y-channel has only one value, and there is only one z-channel, the axis system goes blank (there is just an empty white field with a thin outline).
I don't understand why it doesn't work that way. The length of my one z-channel is the same length as my x-channel, as it should be.

  • My ipod works fine, but won't connect to my car anymore.  It did for two years, I have had the car checked out, and the car works with others' ipods and iphones.

My Audi is set up to be iPod compatible.  For the first two years of the cars' life, my ipod worked fine.  When it went out, I had the dealer replace the connection wire and check the system.  My car now works fine with iphones and others' ipods, but not mine.  I tried rebooting it and powering down, but nothing has worked to get the car to recognize the ipod.  Would really appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter.  Many thanks.

    So you tried everything here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Try connecting to another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.

  • Cloud service created works fine in local Azure Emulator. But doesnot work when deployed to actual azure and says Restarting (Role has encountered an error and has stopped. Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException)

    Hi,
I have a created a cloud service and when i run locally in azure emulator it works fine. But when I am trying to deploy that to azure it says: Restarting (Role has encountered an error and has stopped.
    Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException)
Can anyone please help me on this.
    Thanks,
    Satya Chenna

Any specific reason you are having timer on role start up? are you using thread.sleep for longer duration in the method?
If you are using azure diagnostics - make sure these things
    1. Azure storage connection string is set to correct storage account and not to the development storage.
    2. Check session state provider - local is not supported on azure.
