System hangs on startup
Hey guys, I need help with a new system i've built. After some weeks of usage, my Plextor DVD-RW started causing system
reboot every time i inserted a disk in it. After three times the system stopped completely. Every time i try to boot my
motherboard hangs while the D-LED braket has the 1 & 3 leds green (Testing Base and Extended Memory). That happens even if
the DVD-R is not connected. I checked at another system my memory, VGA card and HDD, but nothing is faulty.

Anyway:
1) Have you updated bios?
2) Have you installed any CDRW software and patched? (Virtual Drive part of some software NERO, causes crashes, when autoplay enabled)
3) Tried a different CD drive???
Other readers....DO NOT start a QTEC battle with me here....1) You will NOT win and 2) This is not the PLACE, a member needs help

Satellite L500 - System hanging on startup screen after Windows update
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help. My Satellite L500 is hanging on the blue startup screen after it restarted after a windows update, the mouse arrow is moving, and there seems to be some hard drive activity with some flickering in the system indicator lights. Other than that, nothing? Any ideas?
Thanks,
DeniseIt was stuck on the Windows 7 welcome screen, all I had to do was hold the power button down for longer and restart it properly. I was just concerned as they always say not to turn the computer off during an update.
*All good now* thanks anyway :) -
System hangs at startup screen after 10.4.9
Hello all,
After installing OS 10.4.9, i restarted the computer and the computer keeps hanging at the blue startup screen.
any recommendations for help? all i can do is to restart the computer and it goes back to the blue loading screen and hangs
thanks for your help in advanceHi there ,
1.Disconnect any external devices connected to your
computer before you restart.
ok i did
2.Try booting the computer in safe mode by holding
shift key>>
i held on to the shift key. still the blue screen loads and hangs in there
if it doesn't work then you can try
repairing the permissions and verify the disk by
following this
article>>http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnu
m=106214
i followed the instructions and repaired disk and permission. but still blue screen
3.After repairing the disk by using FSCK command,
i did it. and when i restart the computer, the blue screen sill remains
it not works then the only option would be to try
repairing with the disk or a re-install of operating
system
when i load the dvd that came with the ibook, nothing happens. i tried pressing 'c' or 's' or 'option' when the computer restarts. it doesnt work as well. nothing happens. the computer loads and freezes when the loading bar at the blue screen is fully loaded.

[SOLVED*] system hangs at startup after grub screen
My system is hanged after the grub window. I choose Archlinux, like always, apparently starts to boot and the next screen is frozen. It says:
/dev/sda2: recovering journal
/dev/sda2: clean ....
systemd-fsck[208]: /dev/sda1: recovering transactions file
systemd-fsck[208]: /dev/sda1: clean ...
systemd-fsck[221]: /dev/sda4: recovering transactions file
systemd-fsck[221]: /dev/sda4: clean ...
And that's it. It frozes in this point. I didn't make any update since 3 days ago. Yesterday the computer runs well.
I tried to enter into Fallback mode, but I get to the same point.
Any suggestions?
Solved partially: I connected a second screen this morning. When I disconnect it, the system starts. Now I have to solve how to add a second screen because when I add it once the system is running, it hangs.

T400 system hangs at POST screen after updating BIOS 7UET82WW
I have 3 GB memory and Win-7 Ultimate 32 bit OS installed in my T400 system. Recently I had updated the latest BIOS 7UET82WW thru TVSU and ended up with a serious problem. The BIOS update itself was succesfull, but right after reboot my problems started.
1. The system hangs during startup in POST screen and sometimes boots into OS after a long wait (20-30 mins)
2. When I try to press F2 to enter the BIOS, i get a long beep for about 10 seconds and screen becomes white
3. White screen garbage disappears in few seconds and blinking cursor stays for long time (around 20 -30 mins)
In net, I have to wait for around 30 mins for the system to boot into OS everytime. If I interupt in between by pressing any key, long beep and white screen garbage appears. I am not able to enter the BIOS as well.
After logon to the OS, everything seems to be absolutely perfect. But the problem comes back after reboot or hibernate and resume the system.
Appreciate any solution or feddback from anyone. My T500 did this as well after the update. I went into the bios and loaded all the defaults, rebooted. Went back into the bios and reset my options (discrete only, turn off some unused features) and the system is working normally and Vista is booting as quickly as it had been before the update (and actually can accomplish a reboot).

System hangs when copying large quantity of files from external HD
A little background:
I was having some problems with the original OS (10.4.1), including periodic freezes. I bought the Mac Box Set '09 and installed Snow Leopard (10.6.5), but ran into some problems and in the process had to reformat my internal hard drive. I backed up all of my photos (~16GB), Documents (~1.5GB) and Music (~50GB) on a WD external hard drive (My Passport 750GB).
*The problem*: After the 10.6.5 install, the computer works great (no random freezing when I click around in Finder), but I am having trouble copying files back to the internal HD from the external. I can copy up to about 1GB at a time without any problems, but any time I try to copy more than that, the system hangs (first the spinning disk cursor, then it totally freezes) and I have to do a hard reset. I have tried copying a number of different folders (pictures and music), and the same holds true: small folders with a few files copy without a hitch, but any time I try to copy a lot of files at once: freeze city. This problem occurs whether I am using Finder to copy the files or iPhoto/iTunes to import them.
I have verified both disks using the Disk Utility AND restructured/verified them using DiskWarrior. I also had no problem copying all of my files from My Passport to a second external HD using this MacBook, so I assume the Passport is fine. Is this a physical problem with my internal HD? If so, why can't DiskWarrior or DiskUtility catch it? I just noticed that there is an internal HD recall for this model of macbook, although I have never gotten the question mark on startup that would qualify me for a replacement HD from Apple. Maybe it's a problem with Snow Leopard... I would love to know if anyone has had this problem before or has some advice.
Thanks,
SamExternal USB/FW drives 'falling off' or drives spinning down (going to sleep) and I would assume since you have been running 10.4 that the Passport might be older model, perhaps not the latest firmware, maybe not compatible with Macs and with Snow Leopard.
Obviously you want FW800 but for some, USB worked where FW fails.
Hard Reset: do you have another hard drive to boot from to run Disk Warrior? is that updated to 4.2 or later? you never want to run DW from CD. Else, boot from OS X 10.6.5; or Single User and run FSCK. HFS+ doesn't take kindly to hard restarts even though a Safe Boot helps a little, that isn't as good as FSCK or one of the other options.
Disk Warrior Rebuild is more thorough, but if you hold OPTION while clicking on REBUILD it brings up more choices. And you want to scan the full hard drive.
Going back to Aug/Sept 2009, there were a lot of threads about external hard drive issues. Wish I could point to a good one. -
10.7.4 Hanging at Startup
I don't often find the need for these forums, but I've got a tough one this time. Here's my issue:
I was recently using my late 2008 MBP (6 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HD) without issue as I have done for the last several years. The other night, I was running my DJ software (Traktor) which worked fine all night. I ended the night and shut the lid on my MBP, the next day, Traktor was still shutting down (as it does on occasion). I gave it a few minutes, but it seemed to have crashed so I force quit the program. Things seemed to be running slow so I restarted. When I did, my system hung on startup at the gray Apple screen with the spinning wheel. After many days and many, many troubleshooting routines, I'm STILL unable to make this go away permanently. Here's what I've tried:
(I've always been able to boot in Safe Boot mode, so that's how I've been doing maintenence)
Initially, I thought this was probably related to my DJ software so I uninstalled it (including manually uninstalling all extensions and preferences).
That didn't work so I started cleaning out my system (I haven't done a fresh install of OSX since like 2005, so it was probably time anyways). Still, no luck.
I reinstalled 10.7.4. Success, but only for the initial startup. A subsequent reboot and I'm back at the stalled startup.
Try removing more stuff from the system to no avail.
Wipe hard drive completely, reinstall OS X. WORKS!
So, I start migrating things back over from my backup (I used CCC instead of TM because I wasn't sure of the integrity of my TM backup). Things seem to be going OK.
Reinstall Messages beta and restart. NOOOOOO. Back hanging at same place.
I figure it has something to do with Messages, so I Uninstall the Messages beta. Still hanging at startup.
Getting really frustrated now.
Time to try a blast from the past: Applejack. Yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 10.7, but low and behold, cleaning caches gets me back in business--but only for one reboot. Then I'm back at a stalled startup until I clean the caches again (and it's the system cache, not the user cache).
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM and then immediately cleaning the system caches. That again gives me one good restart then back to the hanging startup. And, that's where I'm at now.
I'm absolutely stuck. I literally have not experienced this kind of issue in at least five years, so I could really use a hand on this one. The last log entry that I'm getting on the stalled startup is this:
6/28/12 11:25:39.364 PM ntpd: proto: precision = 1.000 usec
Then it just hangs forever. The spinning progress wheel just freezes. I left it sitting overnight at that screen, so I'm 100% sure that it's not going anywhere.
I have a couple of theories on what the issues could be, but at this point, I'm totally open to suggestions. From what I can tell (from watching the logs over the course of several (seems like) hundred startups), it seems like this is about the point in the startup where iCloud is trying to check my user credentials. That said, I could be totally off base with that. Also, although the preceeding log entry seems to come after this on occasion, I'm NOT seeing this entry on any of the startups that hang:
6/28/12 11:25:38.000 PM kernel: NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
Seems to me that this could be an issue too since that's obviously associated with the graphics hardware.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!Something you haven't mentioned is whether you have tried booting
from your clone and having the same issues. Did you try that?
If it boots and works fine from the clone, then there could be
a corrupted file trying to be accessed at boot (possible bad sector)
on the internal drive or it could be that the drive is starting to
give out. -
Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) RAID card hangs at startup
Hello,
I have a Mac Pro 2.8Ghz Quad Core (early 2008) with 10GB RAM and 512MB VRAM.
I have noticed that the Mac Pro RAID card hangs at startup for RAID volumes.
It seems to start okay with a single boot drive (have used both WD Raptor 150GB 10K and Seagate 'factory' 320GB 7200rpm as boot drives...)
But the RAID 0 array using two factory 1TB WD 7200rpm is what seems to hang at startup. I have run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility and RAID Utility and found no major errors...
Any suggestions? Have already replaced the RAID Card battery with OEM part.
Thanks!Say good-bye to the Apple Pro RAID card. It started its life as a $999 card to support SAS/SCSI and/or RAID5.
Then the problems with 2.5TB drives, battery, and does it really do something and add to your system.
I would use SoftRAID and create a 3-drive mirror of 2TB drives instead.
And an SSD for the system.
Seems like those are some very old drives.
I have a lot of the 150GB 10K VR drives, and some 300GB along with older 74GB and a couple of the Raptor series. Loud and while solid I would use for spare boot drives, clone only.
Backup your data, pull the RAID card, and restore to the drives. And clone the system onto a 250GB $109 SSD. $139 buys a 400MB/sec writes and 800MB/sec reads Samsung PCIe-SSD XP941. None of my SCSI 15K drives would come close. -
Hi, I read for several hours now, but I can't find a hint what problem I'm experiencing. Perhaps someone has an idea?
I have a small java application (jdk1.3.1_08) which starts a RMIRegistry, binds an object name. It then starts another java application in another jvm using Runtime.exec(...).
Everything fine until here. The second application starts and works fine.
BUT: Now I close app2 and start it again from app1. Basically everything works also this time. But there is a delay at startup from app2 which I cannot explain. App2 hangs for 10 secondes up to 70 seconds, between two debug outputs!!!
Every little hint is appreciated!!
Torsten.I think the hanging of app2 is not depending on what it actually does. But I try to explain some more, you're right:
App1 is kind of a starter environment, a launch center for several applications. One of these applications is my app2. The reason for using rmi and the second jvm is that I now can use a System.exit(0) in app2 without killing the launch center (app1). When I start app2 standalone from command line without rmi, then it starts without the strange system hang.
What does app2 do?
App2 has a starting time of about 30 seconds (standalone) where several things are initialized. In detail, it is a Swing application using the oracle framework JClient for data binding of Swing components and the oracle framework BC4J for mapping to an oracle database. The system hang when started in the second jvm occurs in the startup process, but not at a specific point in the programm. This means: on PC1 it hangs everytime between the same two debug outputs, on PC2 (a bit faster) it hangs later in the code. Thats the reason why I think, there could be a rmi problem.
What I did not mention yet: The launch center (app1) builds a kind of transfer object which is passed via rmi to app2 in the second jvm.
Does this help to solve my problem? I really run out of ideas what to do... -
Hi
We are using Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 .
We Restored the database on Test server from Production by using RMAN .
The problem is when we startup the database it hangs after Mount phase.
In alert log file We saw the following eror

We removed all the DBLINKS as we thought that could be the problem but the problem was same.
We found some Pending transactions in DBA_2PC_PENDING and purged all of them (19.10.20602 in the above error was part of Pending transaction)
But the database still hangs on startup .
The last entry in alert file inow is

IMac G5 hangs on startup, won't boot from disc
Hello,
My brother's computer has been acting up and I've been unable to fix it for him...so I was hoping I might be able to get some advice here.
Problem: hangs on startup. It goes to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning progress wheel like it normally would, but never gets past that. You can hear the hard drive working and eventually the fan comes on.
What I've done:
1) attempted to boot from OSX disc, same result
2) attempted to boot from Apple hardware test disc. this brings up an open firmware terminal style prompt but does not boot from the disc. using the prompts i reset pram and did the "reset all" command which restarted the computer but it continued to hang
3) opened it up and pulled the only ram chip out and put it in the other slot. Unfortunately we don't have another chip to test out, but if you guys think it is a likely culprit I'll go buy him one to see if that fixes it.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
-AlanDo you hear the drive spinning up? Have you tried a safe bootAfter the startup tone, hold down the <shift> key until you (hopefully) reach the desktop, it will be longer than normal, because Disk Utility's "repair" is invisibly run; it also will bypass any login items. If the system gets to the desktop OK this time but stalls when the shift key is NOT held down, the problem may be some login item that will need to be removed, using the Accounts panel of System Preferences and its Login Items section.
You could try to repair the machine using Target Disk Mode to access it. -
Labview 8.0.1 hangs on startup and shutdown
I have been using Labview 8.0.1 and Teststand 3.5 on my laptop for a few weeks (eval versions)
during the time I don't have access to my PXI platform.
Today when I tried to shutdown my laptop, Labview would not shut down and could
not be terminated. After 10min or so it finally shut down. After reboot of the system, labview
hangs on startup during "finishing intialization", and must be terminated. I cannot launch it at all.
Please tell me there is a way to fix it without reinstall.Woah there! Let’s
take a step back before we take drastic measures…..
First of all, does your Laptop meet all of the minimum requirements
of the install of LabVIEW? Do you have
sufficient RAM, do you have a supported OS, and do you have a capable video driver? All of these things make a difference! Additionally, there is a way to set the NI
services (or any service for that matter) to run when needed as opposed to
automatically running on startup. To do this, open the Windows Control Panel,
and click on “Administrative Tools” and open “Services”. From here you can start and stop services, as
well as configure them to run in “manual” mode which will start them only as
needed.
There should never be a problem with uninstalling NI
Software due to NI services running. The
proper way to uninstall LabVIEW is to first shut down all NI programs you have
open. Then, go to control
panel->add/remove programs->national instruments software and choose “change”. From here you can uninstall LabVIEW by
clicking on it and selecting “remove”.
Installing 8.0.1 should have had no effect on the NI services or LabVIEW. Did you reboot and mass compile the LV directory after the
8.0.1 install? It’s also important to note
that all of the LabVIEW 8.0 installers are the same. The version of LabVIEW that is installed
depends on which version is “unlocked” based on the serial number you enter
when activating LabVIEW.
It is entirely possible that for some reason one of the NI
services is hanging, or behaving poorly.
I think you were on the right track with starting debugging from that
point. We could also try to determine
which exact service is causing problems, then determine which software that
service installed with and troubleshoot from there.
I assure you that many people are running with all sorts of
NI software combinations on their machines without these problems. If there is some problem with an NI service
on your machine, installing a new version of LabVIEW might not make a
difference anyway. I do apologize that
this has been causing you problems, and I thank you for the debugging completed
so far. I hope this information proves useful -- please let us know how things
go!

Advanced thanks for your reply
ThanksHi,
Did you perofrm a factory reset with the recovery partition? According to your description, the system hangs during the installation, and the keyboard\mouse both malfunction, in this situation, I'm afraid that we need to power off the machine and re-do
the setup. Unplug all external device except keyboard\mouse. By the way, what is the reason that you want to use recovery partition, as
arnavsharma mentioned already, when a system is malfunction, before using the recovery partition, have you tried other recovery options in recovery console, such as Last known good config\startup repair\system restore ? Any result?

RobReinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
