  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) Create a System Image Failure (error code: 0x80780119)

    Hello,
I recently bought a new 1 TB hard drive, and I want to move everything from my original 250 GB to the new one. I have read from numerous sources that Creating a System Image through Windows 7, and then restoring that system image using the Windows 7 OS disc,
is the safest way to do so. My problem lies in creating the system image. I have looked up the error code and found that the usual problem is not having enough space, specifically on the System Reserved partition of the drive.
On the original 250 GB hard drive, the C: partition has 45 GB of free space, while the System Reserved partition has 69 MB of free space. On the new 1 TB hard drive, the only partition has 747 GB of free space (this is because I was originally going to manually
move only certain files, such as games, but halfway I decided that I want to move everything over).
On the 250 GB hard drive, the main partition that houses the OS and my other files is, as I said above, labeled C:. The System Reserved partition, also on the 250 GB hard drive is labeled G:. The only partition on the new 1 TB hard drive is labeled F:.
From what I can tell, based on similar questions and their responses as well as the information given from the system image error, I should be able to create the system image without any problems. When I try to create the image (I check the boxes for both
partitions, C: and G: when asked what drives to create an image of), I receive the same error code, 0x80780119, along with the message about not having enough space on one of the volumes.
I'm all out of ideas, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your help,
    Joshua Ratliff

    Dear all
Hi. My laptop CPU is 1.8 GHz, RAM 1 GB, Windows 7 Starter 32-Bit, hard drive: 30 GB for System, antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials. Creating system image in Windows 7 does not progress in my laptop so I typed regsvr32

Stop/ Start VSC in Services menu, typing command SFC in adm. Command Prompt, and Clean Boot all were unsuccessful.
Would you do me a favour about this issue, please?
    Kind regards

    I have the same issue.
I am following a Microsoft procedure to re-register DLLs to resolve a VSS error.   At this point, an error occurred. I did:

    > regsvr32 ole32.dll
    > regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

  • Create System Image FAILURE because of the 100MB system reserved partition that Windows automatically created

    trying to run:
Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore > Create a system image
failed.  the first attempts produced the error message:
A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. The specified object was not found. Error code: 0x81000019
so I searched around, read several threads from other users encountering the same issue, tried the various solutions suggested, found Volume Shadow Copy and SPP in services and set both to Automatic and started them, and then I tried running Create
a system image again and received a different error message:
    Create a system image
    The backup failed.
There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. Make sure that, for all volumes to be backed up, the minimum required disk space for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination
and volumes incluced in the backup  minimum requirement: For less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space.  For volumes more than 500 megabites, the minimum is 320 megabites of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of
free disk space on each volume if folume size is more than one gigabyte.
    (0x87080119)
according to this, a 100MB partition (a drive less than 500 megabytes) must have 50MB of free space.  as you know, Windows automatically creates a hidden partition of 100MB on installation.  that partition contains more than 50MB of data and, therefore,
obviously doesn't have the minimum 50MB of free space required by Windows' Create a system image utility, yet the Create a system image requires that the 100MB partition as well as the C drive and the Recovery partition be included (the checkboxes beside each
one is checked and grayed out, so none of the three can be unchecked).  so it appears that Windows has designed an installation default (automatic creation and filling of that 100-MB partition) that conflicts with Windows' own Create a system image utility
    and prevents it from working.
what is the workaround or solution to this problem.  I will be replacing my primary 1TB HDD with a new one and need a way to back up my system to a portable/external USB 2TB HDD and then to transfer the image back to the new internal HDD once it's installed.
for clarification, this is NOT about backing up my files, so please do not reply with suggestions about archiving my folders and documents.  my system is set up the way I want it, with all my personalized settings and configurations, all of my software
is installed, all of my shortcuts, saved context menu data, folders, etc. are where I want them and installing a fresh copy of Windows and all my other software and then redoing everything I've done to get the system set up the way it is will take DAYS of
exhaustive, laborious, and time-consuming effort.  Microsoft apparently intended to provide a solution by creating the Create a system backup option, but it doesn't work, so what is the solution?

    Hi,
In my opinion, about this problem, there is no relationship with 100 system reserved partition. Moreover, according to the error message, it should be the drive which you wanna store system backup image file doesn't have enough space, not 100M system reserved
    parition.
System reserved parition used to store system startup bcd file, bootmgr, necessary file of Bitlocker encryption. This drive won't affect system image backup process.
Therefore, please check the shorage drive capacity if it is meet the backup requirements, also you can check Event Log if it identify the problem.

  • FAILURE ( 5640 ): FALSE: Verify File: \\SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim ERROR

    Guys,
I need help with this error please. I have a WDS in building 13 and another 1 in building 31; Both servers have MDT 2013. At some point, both deployment shares were linked via MDT but I deleted that few days to solve some deployment share corruption in building
    31 WDS.
Presently I have 2 32bit images (my 64bit images work fine) giving me the following MDT error in BUILDING 13 during the image deployment:
    FAILURE ( 5640 ): FALSE: Verify File: \\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim
Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005
Failed to run the action: Install Operating System.
    Unknown error (Error:00001608; Source: Unknown)
The Execution of the group (Install) has failed and the execution has been aborted. An action failed....
Please note, BUILDING 13 deployment share is not linked to BUILDING 31 deployment share. I don't understand why this error is pointing to BUILDING 31 deployment share.
\\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim  has been removed. I need the task sequence to point to
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim. BUILDING 13 deployment Share task sequences are pointing to
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare as well as my CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini
    1. I have diskpart and cleaned the disc, no luck.
    2. I have checked the Install action for both images task sequences and even verified each action on both tasks and cant find any error.
    3. I have re-generated the boot images and retyped
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare on its CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini
    4. I am in the process of copying Image 11-13-2014.wim back to
\\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems BUT again I don't understand why these task sequences are pointing to building 31. If this step doesn't work, I will restore both images from a backup and re-added them to building 13 MDT.
But I don't think these steps are the solution.I am out of ideas here...

I disabled McAfee AV, moved images boot files to a different location, regenerate boot images files in MDT, update deployment share, re-add boot files to WDS & refresh WDS. This works for me.

  • System Image Backup failing when trying to write to a Drobo 5N NAS

I'm trying to make a full system image through file history, and I get part way through the process until I get the following error:
    The backup failed.
There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)
    Additional information:
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0x80070021)
I've found one other thread where this was an issue and the user said that he had no issues doing it to a USB drive, so I'm assuming it's related to using a network one. I can run file history/recovery (whatever it's called) to the same network attached
server in the same parent folder so I know it's not a permission issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
In order to know whethr this issue is related with the speicfic NAS, I suggest you try to backup the image to another external drive and check if the error persists.
Actually, according to the error message, it seems more related with the files which need to be backed up, it is locked\unaccessable. I recommend you temporarily turn off any anti-virus program protection. Stop other running processes including background
processes, then try to backup again, test the result.

  • System image backup error (0x80070021)

I have attempted to use the system image backup tool so I do not have to re-install everything in the event of HDD failure.
However, I receive an error (specified in title) that a process has locked a file, and it fails.
I have already tried closing every background task I can, but to no avail.
I am backing up to a LAN drive. (Seagate Central 3TB)  It is running the latest firmware.
    Thanks.

    Using process monitor
FWIW what I was imagining might be possible is finding a file name which is causing the problem symptom.  E.g. find where in the trace the message that you see is being written and then use that for context to see what was occurring just before that.
I mostly use ProcMon as a guide to my analysis of the existing diagnostics and, since I don't have access to the source or support documentation, as a supplement to their meaning.  E.g. to get a list of all the files which are being written to
while your trace was running you can use the Count... tool.  E.g. first filter on Operation Is Write then use Count... to see how many unique Path values there are associated with it.  Once you have inferred where a particular message was written
you can then turn off your filter and go back to see what other registry and file accesses might have contributed to it.  Otherwise it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the possible red herrings in a ProcMon trace.   <eg>
I suspect that the two processes that you have found doing stuff are supposed to be doing those things.  However, since I was unfamiliar with them I had to do a web search for each.  The results of that would suggest looking in the Event log for
clues.  So, if ProcMon shows your processes writing to the Event log, definitely have a look at them.
    Good luck

  • System Image Backup fails in Surface Pro Win 8.1 with an error

I'm trying to create a system image backup by using "System Image Backup" tool that comes with Windows 8.1 without any success.
For this I went to "File History" tool and under this at the bottom-left hand side there is a link "System Image Backup". Then selected the drive and just clicked Next and Ok on the prompts.
I get the below error message around the last stage of the backup since the progress bar will be just around the finish line when
the below error pops up saying that the backup wasn't successful:
ERROR: "There was a failure while compacting the virtual had disk on the backup location. (0x80780151) Additional Information: Incorrect

I'm using Verbatim 500GB portable hard drive. I have formatted it in NTFS file system as required by the backup tool. It has nothing
in it so it has enough space.

  • Windows 8 backup (Win7 File Recovery system image) creation to NAS device fails with error 0x807800C5

    Hi,
I have a ZyXEL NSA310 NAS device on my network that I use for backups (as well as a media server). I have been very happy with it as, amongst other things, it has a gigabit Ethernet connection. I recently upgraded my home laptop from Win7 Pro to Win8
Pro. Under Win7 the NAS device worked perfectly as the backup target. I could back up file sets and - most importantly to me - create a system image on the device should I need to restore the system in the event of a full disk failure.
When I upgraded to Win8 it kept the Win7 settings and it looked like it was just going to work, then as it came to create the system image it failed with error code 0x807800C5 and message "The version does not support this version of the file format".
I have searched the internet and seen that others have had similar issues on Win7 and Win8 with NAS devices where they have had to hack the device to get it working - though it isn't clear that this has been successful for everyone. This isn't an option
for me as the NSA310 is a closed device and in any event I don't see why I should have to hack the device when clearly this is a Win8 issue (since Win7 worked perfectly).
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue so that I can create the full backups I require?
    Thanks,
    Phil

Thanks willis! I will look into the iSCSI route. A quick Google search and I can see some mention of the NSA310 and iSCSI so maybe it does support it.
One question: Have you ever attempted to restore a system image from a NAS iSCSI device with a Win8 Restore Disk? Is it easy? I just want to be sure that it is possible to do so in case the worst happens and I need to restore the entire image onto a
    new disk.
Hopefully Microsoft will fix the issue with the standard NAS setup with an update in the future, but I don't want to wait for it.
    Thanks again,
    Phil
Hi Phil,  No I have not had to do this yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work as the iSCSI disk looks just like a regular hard disk to the OS. I agree that Microsoft should fix the direct NAS support as the iSCSI approach does have the downside
of dedicating a fixed chunk of your NAS drive to the iSCSI disk that you have to choose when you create the disk whereas the direct NAS just uses the actual space currently needed by the backup. Also I had some trouble getting authentication (access rights)
to work so I left the iSCSI portal as open access - which is OK for a home solution but not a good idea in general. I will revisit this for my own setup and see if I can get it working but just wanted to mention it in case you have the same issue. It manifests
itself as not being able to connect to the iSCSI portal due to failed authentication when running iSCSI initiator setup.

  • How do I restore a Windows 8.1 system image if I upgraded from Windows 8?

I have a new HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC 15-j003cl.
It came with Windows 8 which I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I created the HP Recovery USB flash drive.
From my reading I understand that the recovery USB flash drive is Windows 8 not 8.1.
    My question is:
Can I restore a Windows 8.1 System Image Backup I made on a USB hard drive using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive?
Or, to put it another way, what is the recommended procedure to back up an upgraded Windows 8.1 computer so, in the event of hard-drive failure, I don't have to start with Windows 8, upgraded to 8.1, re-install all my apps?
    Thanks
    Kirk

OK here's where I am now and a few followup questions,
    Started with Windows 8.
Upgraded from Windows Store to Windows 8.1
Installed lots of apps and got everything running the way I like.
I created a full system image of my upgraded 8.1 hard drive to an external USB hard drive.
I have successfully created a recovery boot USB flash.  (did not copy recovery partition) I can restart the computer from
it and navigate up to the point where it will restore my system image made after I upgraded to 8.1.  (I don't want to risk
trying it for fear it will mess up my computer)
Assume my hard drive failed and I have a new blank hard drive:
My question is at this point does it matter that this was originally a windows 8 (not 8.1) computer?
Will I be able to restore the image of 8.1?
Does it matter which version of Windows I created the recovery boot USB flash on?  ( I can't tell when it boots from the
recovery USB flash if it is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
I wish there was a way to test this without risking losing all the work I have done to configure the computer??
    Thanks,
    Kirk

  • System image for Win 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

Hello, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  Am reading conflicting information online about being able to produce a system image in Win 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 - plus am not able to find directions for this process online or
on the laptop in question.   The hard drive is failing in this laptop so I need to produce an image so that the transition when the new drive is installed will be a simple one.  If creating a system image is not possible in this version of Windows
are there other alternatives that will accomplish my goal?
    Thanks, Steve.

    Hi Steven,
If you are using a retail edition Windows, kindly follow the instructions as mentioned in the article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/back-up-programs-system-settings-files#1TC=windows-7
For OEM system, system image backup recovery for new hard disk might cause Windows activation failure by OEM product key.
as mentioned by Rick, you might need to contact the manufacturer of your system for assistance.

  • Yoga 2 Pro System Image

    Helo everyone:
I'm new to the forum. I hope I'm posting in the right spot. I recently received a Yoga 2 Pro (it's for my son who's going to college.) This is a GREAT computer. I'm trying to creat a system image backup in case junior does a job on the laptop. I cannot find how to do this in Windows 8.1. I can tell Lenovo partitioned the SSD and has it's own recovery sytem. I'm sure this works. However, is there any kind of work around so I can make a system image of a brand spanking new computer in case there's some failure down the road? Thanks in advance.

Hi GinoShea, welcome to the forums,
Please see the instuctions on the following link regarding craeting recovery media in Windows 8/8.1
    http://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/HT080887
Also, for European systems purchased in Europe for a possible worst case scenario recovery media can be ordered from Lenovo through the following link. System type, serial number will be required and there will be a charge for this.

  • System Image Utility- update computer name file?

Is there any way to update the computer renaming list after an image is created? For instance, you have an existing image you want to install on new computers. Do you need to recreate the image just to pull in the updated list of computer names/mac addresses?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did some looking around and can maybe answer my own question. It appears that the naming list that you point System Image Utility to is converted to a .plist called sharingNames.plist located inside your newly created .nbi at install.dmg/etc/. You can edit it with the PropertyList editor to update names or it seems to work too if you replace the sharingNames.plist with once from a newer image with an updated name list.
On the other question about the 10.4.9 image not completing, I tested that again with the log on and saw the failure was due to not enough disk space even though there's plenty. Setting filtering to specific machines made no difference so I must have dreamed that up. In my case, I'm target booting a ibook g4 to an intel machine and it fails. I can target boot the same ibook to a ppc machine and image creation is successful so I guess you can't mix the intel and ppc. It did work target booted to an intel machine if I used Disk Utility to create an image off the target booted ibook, then pointed SIU to that image as the source instead of the target booted ibook.

  • System Image Utility 10.4.7 doesn't know about Intel Macs

After updating my server to 10.4.7 today, I set out to update my network install image for my lab Intel iMacs by adding the 10.4.7 package to it.
Using the new 10.4.7 System Image Utility, however, I was not able to apply the correct Intel iMac filter, as none of the Intel Macs were visible in the list. I downgraded to the previous 10.4 version, and was able to see the Intel options in the filter list.
Is there any problem with using an earlier version of System Image Utility 10.4? Is there a way to patch the new version?

    Hello TomTom fans,
I am Having exactly the same TomTom Go 910 USB issue since I updated from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9
Thinking that might be a USB hardware failure on my 910, I connected it to a Windows XP PC and it works fine.
I therefore pretty sure that the problem comes from 10.4.9 or from a security update.
I sent a message to TomTom but have not yet received an answer from them.
Having seen that there are a few problems reported in this forum due to the upgrade to 10.4.9, I suppose that we will need to wait for some fixes from Apple.
    Cheers,
    Philippe.

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.
The system is encrypted with Bitlocker, and does not have a TPM. I am also running Carbonite, but I have disabled it and the results are the same.
No data is actually written to the log files either, which is strange. The GUI System Image Backup utility also provides virtually the same error. Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Try to test in WinRE to see what the result is.
