System info discrepancy with IPhoto

Hi Terence,
Two quick questions:  I either rebuilt or restored my iphoto library a couple of months ago due to inability to read and received the error:  may be in use by another application.  This occured on a 2006 macbook pro that i upgraded to lion and also iphoto 11/9.3.
I dont remember if I rebuilt or restored (couple months gone by); however, it worked!  So no issue there.  Just wanted to give you a history as I believe it is related to my current inquiry.
Question 1:  Further exploration shows that I have 114Gb when I do "Get Info" on the pictures folder in my home folder.  Omnidisk sweep also says I have 115Gb in pictures. However, when I lookup storage in the system information it says that I only have 70Gb in photos.  Why the discrepancy?  Did I double my library size by doing the above rebuild/restore?  Should I not worry about this as system info only shows 70Gb vs. 114Gb in pictures folder?  I also trashed the ipod photo cache (read this in previous thread from you) and saw this will be no biggie as it will be rebuilt. This got me back 14Gb, but did nothing for the above discrepancy.
Question #2:  since I did the above, i've noticed an enormous increase in HD usage in "other" category, I do not believe this was related to the above; however, since following you and some threads I turned off time machine and therefore solved the local backup hogging up HD problem.   Since doing both things above, got at least 7Gb back-great, but believe I can still get more as I still have 45Gb of "other" in my system info.
Are there still mobile time machine backups looming in the background or do I have some picures from restore/rebuild?  if so what is best way to delete this extra data w/out harming my photos?
Thanks so much for your time
waveone

With respect, neither of these questions are about iPhoto. They're about the Finder, and what it reports
However, when I lookup storage in the system information it says that I only have 70Gb in photos.
Where exactly are you looking that up?

  • Serial Number in System Info is Not Long Enough

I have deactivated CS5 from Computer A, noting the System Info before deactivating, which included a Serial Number.
When trying to re-install CS5 on Computer B, the Serial Number is not long enough.
This CS5 is a student edition.

did you get the serial number from Help>System Info, where it says "Serial Number"?  because, if so, that's not the serial number.  In fact, it's not even close.  my actual serial number started with 1 while the "serial number" in the System Info started with 9.
when you deactivated from the old computer, did you check the box to erase the serial number from the computer upon activation?  If not (i.e., the serial number is supposedly still on the old computer), i've heard that if you start a reinstall of CS5 on the old computer, it will fill in the serial number at that screen.  I don't know this for sure because the OS on my old computer literally crashed in an irreparable way immediately after I deactivated CS5.
If it isn't a student edition (you must not have the box - the box would clearly say so), then the only way to get the serial number is to know the email address that it may have originally been installed under.  Even that may not work,  when I spoke to Adobe support (after waiting 3 hours on my digital phone), I gave then every email address that I could imagine having used and did not find the record of my initial installation.
    Again, good luck

I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

Problems with Repousse 3D feature in Photoshop CS5 Extended
I am trying to use the Repousse 3D feature in Photoshop CS5 Extended and have been unable to figure how I can get it to be an option using text. Can you explain how I do this, please?
I have also tried rasterizing the text first and that does not work. I have tried placing the image and them loading the selection and I still do not have the option of Repousse.
I believe the issue is with my OpenGL. In the System Info it allows Normal Mode but does not allow Advanced Mode. I spoke with the "Geek Squad" who advised that this is not an issue with my Mac but has something to do with the software.
Can someone please help me fix this?  Thanks.

Not sure what you want - you shoot the photo by doing a sweep and the camera makes a static JPEG that is long (panaromic) and you import it - on the camera and in iPhoto is is a panaromic photo

I learned mostly by doing. I took my old VBScripts and converted most of them to PowerShell as a starting exercise. After that I learned by lurking here and in the
    PowerShell forum.
There are some learning resources up on the site here that you can go through for getting started:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/dd793612.aspx
There also appears to be a virtual lab that you can play around with (I haven't done this myself, so I can't vouch for its effectiveness):
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9851303
You can poke around in the script repository for working examples to learn and build from:
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter
Once you've got your feet wet, try answering some questions that are posted (I'd highly recommend starting off in the PowerShell forum rather than here). I've always found that the largest obstacle to learning a new language is not having a solid goal to
attain. Answering questions here in the forums will expose you to many different problems that you may not otherwise have run into.

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • File Storage with IPhoto 6

Version 6 has made a real dogs breakfast of my photo filing system. Previously photo files after import were stored in a date hierarchy - Year/Month/Date. All very simple but now it uses Year/Roll Number.
Roll numbers mean nothing and make it very difficult to locate the file you want from other applications.
Is there a guru out there who can tell me how to get back to the sane filing method? It seems to me that I maybe should just trash iLife 06 and then re-install iLife 05 - either that or just go full time with Adobe Lightroom.
Either way I have some work to do getting my filing system back in shape - is there by any chance an Automator action that will search for all photo files and place them in a date folder hierarchy based on the date taken?
iMac 1GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   loyal Mac user getting a wee bit disillusioned with the latest software updates

    Hi cujimmy,
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

  • Go Pro changed my info (metadata) in iPhoto

    Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could help with a strange issue that occurred to me today, my iphoto library has gone crazy since i took images off a GoPro and it managed to change all dates on ALL the events and individual photos in my library, i rebuilt the database using iPhoto first aid but it didn't help with the problem.
Surprisingly the photos when exported to the desktop of the mac show the right (correct) date under the "get info" tab.
As an example a photo that was taken on 5th august 2014 is saying it was taken on the 5th nov 2019 (3 years and 3 months the future to the day)
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the correct dates back onto my photos.
screenshots show 2 incorrect dates of events (which also shows up on the individual photos) and the get info tab shows a different photo with the correct date and time stamp.

In the system preferences be sure that you have a standard date format set - custom formats often cause problems with iPhoto

  • My first Mac and first experience with iPhoto.  Need help

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Mac, a Mini, last week and I'm trying to learn how iPhoto works. I've been able to import picturs from my NAS (network attached storage) drive which holds all our photos, music and videos.
However, when I took pictures over the weekend, I wanted to put them on the NAS as well and have them automatically import into iPhoto. I like that iPhoto lets you put a description about the pictures, but I can't find a way to type a description and then set iPhoto to save the pictures to my NAS drive.
I ended up just saving them to the NAS drive and then importing again and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates. The problem with that is I get folders called thumbnails and then I get messages telling me the Thumbs.db files are not readable and those are coming from my camera card or the NAS drive, maybe because it was formatted on a PC. I know Thumbs is a PC item.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do this and if so, how do I do that? And how do I enter descriptions about my old photos to make them easier to find during a search?
Thanks for the help. While the Mac is very similar to my old PC, there sure are a lot of things I'm unfamiliar with. But with time and some help from experts like you, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with it.
    John

    John
iPhoto is a photo organiser - that is a database. Like any database the data has to be imported into the application.
What format is that NAS? iPhoto does not sit happily on disks that are not formatted for Mac OS X (journalled). You will find issues with saving changes to the db and with sharing pics among other apps.
You can put a library on an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do t
No. For a start, filenames have no relevance in iPhoto - it's all about visual organisation. You can attach titles, keywords and comments to pics, of course, and can add them to the File on export.
If you want to set the pics in a spot, then do that with the Finder and thereafter import them. You can use a batch file renamer such as FileList to rename the files prior to import.
and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates.
Using a Referenced rather than a Managed library means that iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
As a general comment: iPhoto is a bit different from most photo apps. It's happiest when it manages the files and lets you go on to manage your Photos. That's a key distinction though, between Files and Pictures. iPhoto is about Pictures, not Files.
You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - there is never a need to go into the Photo Library on the Hard Disk. To find and access photos:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To use an external editor
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
By all means post again if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD

  • Ordering Books with iPhoto 1.1.1

I just spent all afternoon creating my first book with iPhoto - the reversion that came with my original white iBook. Now it seems I can't order a printed book with this version - MyPublisher.com only works with iPhoto 5 or higher and I can't upgrade to v5.
Is there anyway to get a book out of my hard work? Or do I need to buy iLife and try to run it on my incredibly slow machine?

You can upgrade to iPhoto 2 for free here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120188
once installed Software Update in System Preferences will offer the last update iPhoto 2.0.1
iPhoto 2 will save your organization and upgrade the library
My publisher also requires OSX 10.4

  • Using Adobe Bridge file structure with iPhoto (latest version)

I use Adobe Bridge and have all my pics in named folders in Pictures/PICS/Folder Names.  Inside the PICS folder is the iPhoto Library (only a few pics in it).  Is there any way I can use the file structure I have set up with Bridge and iPhoto (latest) simultaneously?  I really dont want to import (copy) all my pics into IPhot because I am pretty sure I will end up with two versions of each.  I havent been able to manage pics manually the way I like to in older versions of iPhoto.

Here's some info to help you setup Photoshop for use with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

anybody able to help me with my setup for apple tv.  i've followed the directions in the guide and my tv doesn't seem to register in part.  it's weird because my tv system info identifies the apple tv but the screen never went black and it doesn't show anything, too, my imac doesn't seem to register the apple tv unit either

I would try connecting it to another tv to see if it works there if it does
then likely your tv can't handle the default resolution and you should lower it on the other tv
if not then you should connect it by usb to the computer and use itunes to restore it's firmware

  • Canon S300 - how to get it to work with iPhoto?

I have downloaded the proper drivers for the Canon S300 for OS X and this printer will work fine with data documents. However, it will not print pictures from iPhoto. I have been unable to find a list of printers supported by iPhoto. This is an older Canon printer and I imagine it would not be on such a list anyway. Does anyone know any tricks for using this printer with iPhoto?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
When you clicking on the advanced tab it presents you with the full print dialog (the print dialog in iPhoto is known as simple). The Canon driver adds several print options to the printer menu (known as PDE's), one of which is the Quality & Media tab that you are selecting for the high-quality photo option. There is a chance that you may be using an older version that has not been written for the Intel platform thus giving you an error. The quickest way to check this would be to print the photo without selecting the high-quality setting. From the simple print window in iPhoto, if you can print to the S300 without the spooler stopping then we know there is only an issue when you select the Canon extra features.
To check the version of the PDE's installed on your Mac, open /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PDEs. Here you will find the extra driver options. For the v4.1.5 driver, which is the latest for Tiger, you will see the options with a suffix of 415, ex QualityMedia415.pde. If you have older versions of the same file (shown with a lower number suffix) then this could be causing the trouble. Also, if you do a Get Info on the xx415.pde files, the General tab of the Info window should show a Kind of (Universal). If you don't have v415 files or if they show (PPC), then delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder, delete the printer from the Printer List, restart the Mac, reinstall the Canon S300 v4.1.5 driver, add the printer again and finish by running the repair permissions option in Disk Utility. Then try printing from iPhoto again using the high-quality option to see if that works.
