System Information App crashes
I have been having my System Information App crash everytime that I click the "More Info". I don't really know what to do to solve this error. Here is the crash report. I have run a hardware test and found that my RAM appeared to be bad yesterday and switched back to my stock 4GB of RAM. This problem was happening before I switched the RAM and I thought that they were related, it seems I was mistaken.

No Disk utility app or System information app or AirPort Utility app
since upgrading to Maverick these System apps (Disk utility app, Activity Monitor app, Systems Information app and Airport Utility app) are all in shadow with a cross through them. why? at first i waited becourse i thought apple would update but it seems to be just me.
When you upgraded, were they in their default locations or did you move them to a different folder? Updates don't go looking around the computer for the Apps. If they are not in the default location they are skipped.
You could try installing the 10.9.2 combo update. That might update them. -
How can I correct System Information.app 10810 error
I am running Mavericks 10.9.3 on my late 2012 Macbook Pro. I used to be able to run System Information; however, now when I run it I see an error The application "System Information.app" can't be opened. -10810. I've poked around on the net, Googled mostly, and have not found anything specific to my issue. Finder, btw, runs fine and I have not yet seen this error with any other app. Can anyone point me in the right direction to research or help me correct this problem?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Why doesn't System Information.App provide battery serial?
Why doesn't System Information.App provide battery serial? Even /usr/sbin/system_profiler -detailLevel full doesn't show the battery serial.
When I open System Information.App I get this output. Serial number ist not even displayed:I did now try some system tools. They don't show the battery serial, too. I think, they rely on the system profiler's informations and therefore get no data.
When was this feature removed from OS X? According to posts on the internet the battery serial was show up to 10.6 but I never read about the App showing it on 10.7. What about 10.8 users? Do you see the battery serial? -
System information app not working
How can i download another copy of the system information app?
It's best to describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible, rather than how you think it should be solved.

Random system and app crashes.
A few days go I started having some problems with my system.
I'm running OS X 10.5.4 on a 2GHz Intel C2D MacBook (mid 2007).
The problem appears to be random, and so far I haven't been able to identify it. Every once in a while, applications will cease to start up. They simply stop working, there's no way to open them. At first, Firefox started crashing repeatedly, so I re-installed it and everything went normal for a while.
Yesterday the problem became more serious. After several hours of use, several applications stop responding. Lets say I want to use Transmit, or Coda, or Remote Desktop, whatever. I try to launch them and they just freeze. I have to Force Quit them they and won't start up until I restart the system.
Even worse; in some occasions Force Quit doesn't even do anything. The dock freezes, Finder freezes, the Menu Bar crashes. I have to do a force shutdown of the system to get everything back to normal again.
I used to have my system up for days between restarts. In two days I had to restart OS X almost 5 times.
I used Onyx (latest version) and performed every single maintenance task: repaired permission, cleared system, users, apps and font caches, rebuilt the Spotloght index, run maintenance scripts, rebuilt Launch Services. I also removed unused apps, system preferences, helper apps and stuff I don't need.
Apparently it did fixed something, as I notice that everyhintg works a bit faster and snappier. Every apps launched just fine. I left my mac all night doing some SuperDuper! backups and went to bed.
This morning everything was ok, until I few hours ago when I tried to use Software Update. The app failed the start up. Suddenly, not a single app would. I had to restart to get everything back to normal.
It appear to be working for the moment, but I fear that in a few hours it'll become unstable again. Has anyone had this kind of problem before?Could be. I don't do wireless, so I haven't a clue. You might check the Getting Online and Networking forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1222

System Information Bug ??
When I open the System Information App and select "Applications" under the "Software" section all I get is "No information found". Anyone else see this?
Had a perfect update to Lion, no problems at all and everything works fine - much faster than 10.6.Deleted the files you suggested, restarted and launched System Information again. Same "No information found" for Applications. Those files are recreated when System Information is launched.
Would one of you be kind enough to check the permissions on the System Information app ?
The permissions on mine are: everyone Custom
system Read & Write
wheel Read Only
everyone Read Only
This seems strange and is different from all other Apple apps -
Status of System Profiler.app in Lion
Perhaps because I had moved it elsewhere before upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, in addition to the new System Information.app I also have the old System Profiler.app in /Applications/Utilities. And I know that System Profiler.app will not itself run in Lion, but just gives an error message that it's not for this version of OS X.
But...at the command line in a Terminal I can type system_profiler and get a report. While there seems to be no such command-line executable as system_information.
Question: OK to delete System Profiler.app?Yes, since it's not compatible. The new app uses the same Terminal commands as the old one.

MacPro 4.1 - OS 10.8.2
I seem to have a strange problem with the "System Information app". Most of the time when I try to quit this app from the "Menu" after it has been launched via "About This Mac" / "More Info" / "System Report", it doesn't seem to quit completely. What happens is that "System Information" in the Menu Bar stays highlited and the entire Menu is unusable until I click anywere on the desktop. If I quit if from the Dock, it quits every time without any problems no matter how it has been lauched. If I launch the app directly by clicking on it, it quits fine either from the Menu or the Dock.
I've deleted its prefs several times, but it doesn't help - I have even reinstalled the OS over the existing system, but it did not help either. It is really annoying, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Multiple Apps Crashing Unexpectedly / System Crashes
For the past few days now I have been plagued with apps crashing unexpectedly. I have ready quite a few threads on this issue, but to now avail. I have found no Ah Ha moment that gives me a fix.
This is happening on my Mac Book Pro.
So, I wanted to document my journey in trying to repair my machine.
Archive and Install was unsuccessful.
Wiped the hard drive. No external drives connected to the MacBook Pro. Installed all updates suggested by Software Update. Installed all of my software from CDs and one downloaded from Jing.com (This is not a plug for Jing, I am only posting it as this is the only software I have downloaded. After all of that, the problem immediately came back. Apps started crashing, and the computer still went gray and told me to shut down.
So, I have now rewiped my computer and just installed the system with my included DVD. I am going to see if I can only update to 10.5.3, then only install Fire Fox and see if the problem continues.
I'll be back in an hour or less. Here is a copy from my latest crash. Enjoy.

Mail.app crashes entire system (etc)
Hi all,
One of our photography workstations had an issue with the hard disk recently that meant Apple support took us through reinstalling OS X Snow Leopard. We then restored the main user's profile due to the profile becoming unusable during the reinstallation.
Since then, various apps crash the entire system, Mail.app being one of them. 'Crash', in this case, means the spinning beach ball that never goes away, Finder is dead and moving the mouse over the Apple in the top left corner just shows the beach ball - 'Force Quit' is therefore inaccessible.. The Dock is also dead, meaning I can't kill Mail.app from there. At this point the only option is to hold down the power switch and restart the system completely.
So far, this is what I've tried.
- Updating all system components to the latest versions
- Updated all installed apps so they're up-to-date
- Removing Mail.app and reinstalling it from the DVD (didn't work - OS X just said the version isn't compatible and I had to restore Mail.app from a backup)
- Removed all Mail.app files and settings from ~/Library/Application Support etc, including /Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Preferences and /Library/Preferences.
- Installed Postbox.app - even that doesn't work. Starting the app kills OS X and requires the power-button restart ... this one confuses me as it's different app (it's almost like port 25 traffic is killing the OS, although I don't see how that's possible)
All that said, a new user profile *does* work. That tells me that Mail.app itself is OK and that it's a profile issue. However, I did delete all the Mail.app profile files that I could find so I'm assuming (yes, I know assumptions are bad) that the profile Mail.app created after that is actually brand new.
However, I don't want to create a whole new profile unless it's absolutely last resort - the user profile has extensive customisation for screen calibration, printer profiles etc, all done by a very expensive external company ... I'd rather not pay them to do it all again unless it's totally unavoidable.
Can anyone suggest any files that Mail.app might be using that I've missed? It seems odd that Postbox.app does the same thing as Mail.app, as does the Office 2011 updating application (i.e. all kill OS X/Finder).
When the first problem happened, the hard disk starting saying I/O error but Apple is refusing to replace the drive, despite this machine having Apple Care ...
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

I did the bolding for emphasis. When I see the words "extensive customisation" I think those become the first suspects.

The primary folders and files associated with Mail.app are:
~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Mail /Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
~/Library/Mail /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.mail.XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.plist
where the X's are letters and digits.
Note that the fact that other apps are misbehaving should tell you that the problem is not with mail but more systemic.

Run Disk Utility and repair/verify your drive. This is another red flag. -
As you can see from the image above, finder is showing that apps are taking up nearly 30 GB, nearly 25 GB less than system information. What is causing this or which one is the actual size of the apps. It's not as if I'm runing out of space , I'm just a bit curious.
Now Carolyn, hopefully It'll work now!

System information shows free space as taken up by apps
Hey all,
I don't have any issues with the functionality of the drive, only that the free space shows up as used by apps.
Any ideas why this could happen? If it's an app causing this I can let it go. Or is it 'System Information' who's misbehaving?
Tried a disk repair in osx recovery, tried deleting large files, nothing changes it
Thank you!

System information when looking for storage info, also finder crashes
Can anyone help please!
My Finder crashes when doing simple tasks. Also, when loking for storage info in system info it crashes. All other system info works ok! Many thanks! New Mountain Lion Installed, problems since then!Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
