System is constantly freezing. What is wrong?

I've been having some serious problems with my computer in the last couple of weeks. System completely freezes.
First time it happened, I was listening to music on iTunes while away from the desk. It was the only running app. Music simply stopped. I tried to force quit it, but it didn't respond. After it happened 2 times in the same circumstances, it started freezing over Safari or Mail... So I decided to reformat my computer.
After performing a complete reformat, wiping out user data and updating software up to the latest versions, it was working smoothly. Until it started doing it again 2 weeks ago. I had to once again force the computer to shut down, several times.
Last week it went into a gray screen that just wouldn't go away. I tried to perform a safe boot and starting up from the OS disc several times without response. Then, I decided to perform another of the recommended steps in the help topic and reset the PRAM. Afterwards, it got to the Apple logo but it also revived an old issue of the computer screen going black, as if asleep, at startup. Meaning I had to force it to shut down several times again, because I couldn't log into the system to see what was going on the screen or shut it down through the user dialog box.
After a couple of days of not being able to use the computer at all, I got it to start up to the OS disc, ran the Disk Utility, that found everything to be OK. Then it finally got the system up, but the problem still remains. The system is still locking down over simple tasks. It's come to a point where every time I've had to force it to shut down.
I fear there may be something wrong with the hardware, but no idea what it is. I checked the RAM and it's showing up the correct amount. I was thinking about reinstalling the system again, but I fear that may not solve the issue.
I was wondering if there may be an issue with the electrical power. After I tried to startup and got the gray screen, I shut it down, unplugged it and the following day was able to start the system. When I left the power cord untouched I was never able to get the Apple logo to show up. Could it be a battery issue? Logic board? I'm just guessing here, I don't know much about this technical stuff.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to buy a new computer right now.

If you have not already done so, when troubleshooting make sure you disconnect all divices except for the keyboard & mouse from your computer.
How much HD space do you have left?

  • I downloaded the new Firefox but it constantly freezes, doing absolutely nothing, and I can't even close it from my Mac dock bar, I have to turn off my laptop using the power button as Firefox won't let me shut down. What can I do?

    Hi
I recently downloaded the new Firefox (Firefox 4, I think - you can tell I'm very tech savvy!) and it constantly freezes, I can't do anything with it at all - I can't even close it from the icon in my Mac dock bar.
I have tried restarting my computer - though I have to turn it off by using the power button as as Firefox is open and totally unresponsive it won't let me shut down. About a minute after re-starting Firefox, restoring my tabs or starting afresh, it freezes again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm not sure what I can do about it. Firefox is my preferred browser, and I'd really like to be able to use it again!

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

I have just got an iMac 21" and it continuously freezes when it goes to sleep and also when the internet is trying to load, i have tried three different browsers but it still does it (safari, google chrome and firefox), does anyone know what is wrong?

To fix the freezing when sleeping problem go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer Sleep' to 'Never'. It seems there is a problem for some with Bluetooth failing to wake after sleep. This fixes it 100% for me and many others on here, until Apple issue a software update to address it.
Not sure what to suggest on the internet problem. I assume you are connected and receive and send emails OK.
Edit: To try to troubleshoot the internet issue maybe try turning the Firewall off: System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall tab.

  • Snow Leopard Samsung ML-1630 Crashes entire system - what's wrong?

The printer will print, but the entire system crashes and the Mac Mini reboots each time a print job is sent. The forum points out a lot of problems with printers and the Snow Leopard upgrade, but no real help seems to have been offered.
I did download the new Samsung drivers recommended for snow leopard using the Apple link
I have removed and reinstalled the printer, several times
What's wrong? Did Apple test this before they launched the new software?
I bought the printer from an Apple store, I hope they support it still.

I agree with William on this. I use the same printer with just native OSx support.
There is one possible issue. The power that the printer draws when printing is pretty significant. My UPS (AVR) kicks in every time I print there. I do have many devices on this circuit though.
It is possible that your voltage is being pulled so low that your machine is rebooting.
If possible try the printer on a different circuit or turn off as much as possible equipment on the same circuit and give it a try.

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

Hi my itunes library is constantly disappearing, I really don't know what is wrong. It keep happening everytime I turn my laptop off, I thought I had solved the problem the other week however it has started back up again. I have a Sony Vaio laptop and have read on the discussions that this can occur but all the solutions I have read haven't seemed to solve it. Anybody else got an idea? I would be really grateful for the help!

See this post. Seems that AVG is the most likely cause. They are promising a patch tomorrow.

a couple weeks ago, firefox stopped loading (just hung system) on my acer computer running windows xp. I deleted firefox and downloaded versin 4.0.1. But, the same thing is happening. it starts to load but then stops responding and hangs the system. what is wrong?

I also have this problem and it just started in the last week or so. It seems to be dependent on my home network and the problem only exists with firefox. I have used chrome and IE8 with no issues. I can verify tomorrow that it only exists in my network but one thing I was able to test is that the problem exists even on my linux boot. I am totally dumbfounded with this problem and I can't find anything that will allow the gmail page to load. All other pages I have tried load fine, all be it a little slower than normal but they load. If anyone knows of a difference between firefox and all other browsers on how it goes through the router I would appreciate the info cause I don't know of any differences.

I am currently using Windows 8 and also have Microsoft office installed but those are the only thing on my partitioned space.  I don't know if I installed 32 or 64 version of Windows 8.  Could that be the problem?

Can you deal with XP not being supported by Apple and Microsoft? no security etc?
Can you use Windows in a VM instead of natively?
All the drives other than the one with XP will need to be pulled.
Always have backups of your system, clone that you can boot from.
Boot Camp 3.0 was the last supported. You don't need OEM 10.4.6 DVD and your system with EFI and SMC updates (Aug/Sept 2007) may not like it.
32-bit version of Windows on EFI-32 will only get 1.9GB RAM.
Installing 64-bit Windows 7 is a bit harder. Vista pre-SP1 64-bit was the best match for install on my 1,1 and that was 2006-2007.
The new owner needs to deal with this, not you. And really they are better off with a $400 PC instead. Or use a VM.
the owner should put in a new SSD for the system and $44 buys 4 x 2GB RAM. Together it will run just fine. 500GB SSD now $250 / $135 250GB. Biggest issue is a video card on these.
The grey screen - you upgraded the graphic card perhaps.
Unplug everything. Hit power for 5-10 seconds. Reconnect cables for mouse/kb and power, and monitor. You just reset SMC. Yes there is a small button - pull drive #4 and any controller in top slot #4 to see the SMC motherboard reset button but you don't need to.
Any PCIe cards can also play a role and factor into XP or Windows not working.
