System locked up, now won't reboot.

I had been using my system for most of the morning, went to make sandwich, came back and system was all locked up. Wouldn't respond at all. Display was on, but dark except for cursor, which wouldn't move. Nothing would make it active again. So I shut it down using power button on back. Waited a bit, then restarted it. Now it starts to boot, goes through the Apple logo screen, gets to clear blue screen and just stops. Goes no further.
Any suggestions? Using my backup system (older iMac) to post this.

  • System locked up, computer won't start up

Thursday night my iBook G4 began slowing down drastically and eventually everything locked up, which is very strange - that's NEVER happened before and I've had it for a little over 2 years. I turned it off and for the next two hours I kept turning it on and trying to get it to start. It eventually turned on and so I let it sleep over night and it was fine all day Friday. Then Friday night it started slowing down again (battery was completely full, by the way) and it again locked up. An hour or so later I finally got it started up but it locked up again. Now it turns on, but it stays in the gray screen with the apple symbol for about 10 min then changes to a blue screen and just stays there. When it's acting like this I hear a strange sound coming from left side of the computer. I really can not afford to get it fixed or get a new computer. Any ideas? please?

I'm having the same problem, and it started last night (11/4). Except, after the grey screen, and blue screen disappear, a black screen comes on with the name of my computer, and then a login.
I tried logging in using the password I created for my main account, but it doesn't work. It also asks for a password. I usually only use one password so I tried that and it still doesn't work.
I'm running Tiger on my computer, but there's a problem there. A co-worker of mine had just bought his computer and it came with Tiger. He also bought Pro Tools but it was compatible with Panther. I lent him my version of Panther so he could use his $500 software, and in exchange, he lent my a version of Tiger. He has since transferred and we never did swap the software for good, so I can't reboot using Tiger.
I fear that if I switch back to Panther (which I don't really have a problem doing) it will erase all of my pictures and music. The music I have backed up, but the photos were going to be backed up tonight when I have time.

  • System froze and now will not reboot

Today, after a fresh install of Windows XP Home and all drivers, I was moving some files on my Windows desktop when the system completely froze (curser would not move keyboard would not react).
I pressed the reset switch and then my system would not post. I only get the long steady beeps. My system does not have the D-bracket installed so I can't get information from that. I have tried clearing the CMOS (without power cord connected and also by removing the battery) but everytime I power up I get no post and the long steady beeps.
    Suggestions anyone?
My latest hardware change was the switch from a BFG 7950GT OC to the eVGA 8800GTS 640. I have been running the 8800GTS for about 6 weeks now and have had no problems other than the system freezing prior to driver install. after the VGA drivers were installed, I had absolutely no problems.
    System specs:
Windows XP Home Service Pack 2
    Cooler Master 600Watt PSU
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo
    3GB Corsair DDR 400
    MSI K8N Neo4 v3
    2x WD 7200 SATA 80GB HDs in RAID-0
    1x WD 7200 SATA 500GB HD
    Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
    eVGA 8800GTS 640Mb

    Found the problem.
Apparently a memory stick decided to die on me. tried the process of elimination starting with one stick of memory in DIMM slot 1 and adding 1 back to the system and rebooting. when I got the error again, I removed all of the sticks and tried the last one that was added in DIMM slot 1. I got the error again with that stick. Luckily the memory I was using was under a lifetime warranty and I should have no issue returning to the vendor.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Help with occasional system locks when logging out or rebooting

Basically what's happening is occasionally when logging out, restarting, or rebooting from an X session, I get a total system freeze. The screen goes blank and there's no input possible. I'm not seeing anything in the logs. The card is using the xf86-video-intel driver and used to work fine with the i810 driver.
There are some similar threads around like this one:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65469
but it's still somewhat different. For me it only happens occasionally and I lose complete control of the system. This was happening when starting from GDM, and is now happening from starting either with 'exec startlxde' or 'exec ck-launch-session startlxde' (current). GDM is gone now (Hurray! Whoopy! Yahoo!)
One of the solutions listed in the above thread was to remove the vga= line from the kernel command in menu.lst. I don't have that. Another solution was to add it. I didn't try it yet. If this were the problem, wouldn't the behavior be consistent?
It's worth mentioning for a bunch of attempts yesterday I couldn't log in with startx, and I was getting a number of different errors in Xorg.0.log. Today it's working. I have no idea why; It's the same xorg.conf and same software as before.
I'm out of ideas. Got any?

I really could use some ideas with this. The machine in question isn't in my possession very often and it needs to 'just work'. I've since removed everything from lxde except for the panel and am now using a straight openbox session.
The machine only blanks when shutting down, logging out, or restarting. I do have control over the power button, so it will power off. Unfortunately this just kills it, so the file system is uncleanly mounted. Eventually this is going to kill data (if it hasn't already).
I want to reiterate that there is nothing in the logs that everyone isn't seeing with the intel drivers. I've been through countless bug trackers, as well as threads here and elsewhere. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this machine to close gracefully? If I can't get X/intel to play nicely, is there something I can do to get the power button to close the system properly?

  • Installing OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) and it froze, now won't reboot - Help anyone?

The software update needed about 30 minutes to download and did so with no problems.  While initializing and "moving things into place" everything froze and I had no choice but to hold down the power button and try to reboot.
Now, the OS will NOT reboot, I can however, choose to use the Command-R keys and restore from TimeMachine or try to Repair from the DiskUtility. I wanted to find out if there was another way before going to these options, any suggestions?
    Thanks...

    Hi bernphys39,
With some patience and a lot of thought, I was able to reboot my computer without any glitches. Here's how I did it,
If you are using Lion there's a recovery mode: while restarting your computer hold down Command-R key which will bring up several options, re-install, restore via TimeMachine, disk utility etc. and an option to connect via Wi-Fi if needed.
These are great options, however, I didn't want to use any of those options (didn't want to erase my drive, didn't want to re-install etc. etc.). I decided to use the Safe-Boot option, in addition to a bunch of other tricks.
    1. I powered down the computer
    2. Removed the battery and let everything cool down
    3. Put the battery back in place
    4. Removed all peripheral devices, USB cables etc. except the power cable
    5. Pressed the Power Button and held the Shift key down - this is "Safe Mode"
    6. Once the computer booted in Safe Mode, I used Disk Utility and Verified my Disk which ran  a diagnostics test to make sure everything was running smoothly. The test should tell you if everything is ok, if not click Repair disk.
    7. Since all was good, I did one last double check on applications that start up on login
    8. I then powered down by turning the computer off - Shut Down
    9. Waited about 5 minutes and powered up again.
    10. Everything's working fine and making sure TimeMachine is on schedule for another backup.
Advice: Wait before you download the Client Combo! And read exactly what it does, if you feel it doesn't apply to your computer don't download it and wait. (For example, if you are using only Mac apps - no Microsoft apps, then don't download an update that fixes a glitch in Microsoft Word).
Hope this helps anyone who had the same problem as me :)

  • My system locked up, computer won't start up!

I need some help! My computer started taking forever to complete a task! Then it started locking up during the start up process. I started searching for help on here and noticed that others where also having this issue. I did try to repair disk using the disk utility. But unfortunately it didn't get very far. This is what the it says:
Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data (in red)
    Invalid node stucture (in red)
The volume could not be repaired (in red)
Error: The underlying task report failure on exit (-9972) (in red)
I am just learning how to use this Apple IBook G4. So everything is COMPLETELY foreign to me. I'm used to the IBM style PC.
    Please Help!

    Hi Kim,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
An invalid node structure message indicates a damaged directory on the hard drive. You need a more robust disk repair utility like Disk Warrior. It can repair almost all types of directory damage, leaving all of your files imtact.
Your other option is to reformat the drive. This will erase all data on the drive and you'll have to reinstall all of the software.

  • 790GX - system freezes and now won't boot

I've been having some problems with my system over the past few weeks which resulted in me RMAing the motherboard, CPU and memory.
The  motherboard was tested, no fault found and returned.
The CPU and memory were replaced with new items.
I rebuilt and installed W7 and all was well for a few days then the system started to randomly freeze.
I suspected a conflict between the on board graphics and W7 so downloaded an updated driver but this did not stop the freezing.
The machine would usually re-boot OK after a freeze but last night the frequency  of freezes increased and it would not re-boot.
This morning it started up Ok but soon froze and again refused to re-boot.
I wondered if the CPU was overheating but the BIOS read 44C which is well within spec.
I only use the machine for surfing and general use and its not been overclocked.
The PSU was replaced a few months ago  - 400w should be OK with only one drive and no graphics card?
Any ideas as to what could be the problem or where I go from here?
    Russ

it could be a failing HD or virus as well. Load in safe mode and check to see if event veiwer has any errors that may narrow down the cause. It could still be a bad/failing power supply as well.
Also work in safemode for a bit and see if it freezes in safemode. But it sounds like you still have a h/w issue.

thanks for the reply, brian, but unfortunately that is what i meant by the hard reboot.  i've done that many, many times and it's still stuck.  nothing is helping and i can't even get it to sync to iTunes to restore it.
    thanks anyway!

  • IMac won't reboot after system restore from Time Machine

I just installed a wacom intuos pro tablet on my imac running snow leopard. The system clock reset to 1st Jan2000 and system prefenerces were no longer accesible. I performed a system restore from my time machine but now can't reboot. The restore completed succesfully (or so the it told me). When i restarted the imac i got the usual 'bing' followed by grey screen and spinning wheel swiftly followed by a light blue screen with the cursor in the top left hand corner.
There is sat for an hour befoe I switched off and tried again......same result.
The installation disc is still in the optical drive.
Any advice please on how to remidy this?
    Thanks

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM.  You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

  • What do I do when my iphone three is locked up and won't even hard reboot?

What do I do when my iphone 3gs is locked up and won't even hard reboot?

To hard reboot your iPhone 3GS hold both the sleep/wake and the home button at the same time and it should shut down, wait a few seconds before shutting it back on. Also you can hook your iPhone up to itunes and under the iPhone screen select restore to bring the phone back to a clean state. That may help in cutting down on how much it freezes, but make sure you back it up before you do do this if you wish. That way you can restore your old data.
    Hope that helps. ^_^

  • Updated to latest operating system on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

Updated to latest operating system OS X Mavericks on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

The Flash Disk must be NTSF formatted. Writing to NTFS requires 3rd party drivers (Tuxera, Paragon). Reading from NTFS however does not require these. So install NTFS drivers, or format the drive in FAT32 from Disk Utility.
    Hope this helps :-)
