System locks up when entering Sleep - Windows 8

Hi All,
We're in the middle of deploying ~150 Dell XPS12's running Windows 8. We've been deploying these for the past 3-6 months and recently some users have started reporting problems with the laptops entering Sleep. Hibernate works correctly.
Rather than sleeping, the laptops will get a black screen however the power light remains solid on. Nothing can 'wake up' the device, the only thing possible is hold power button to force a power off.
This is not affecting all of the devices, and they are all built from the same SCCM Task Sequence so software/drivers should all be the same.
Can anyone point me in the direction to start troubleshooting this to work out the root cause?
Cheers!
Jay

is there any changes before this issue happen? everything normal before?
you can try
1. change power plan setting, set to default, or follow this step
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976877/en-us
2. update your graphic driver
3. based on your information regarding hybrid sleep, maybe something wrong with this feature, I suggest update BIOS or contact manufactured since this feature must be under BIOS.

  • System locks up when setting up windows 2000

I've had a few problems setting up my computer bit its finally booting. The trouble now is that when I restart for windows to open for the first time the system just freezes up. I've tried a diferent memory chip, different hard drive, different power supply, different windows 2000 Pro disk (even attempted setting up windows XP Pro) and a different AGP. I'm beggining to think the board is a dud. Can anyone throw any light on this. Can't get the computer running to attempt flashing the bios or anything.

ah, no biggie.  if you havent tried this already, i would try installing windows and booting with as much of a minimal set of periferals as possible.  just the cd, hd, mobo, ram, and vid card.  see if you can get through the install.  then add all your periferals in one at a time.  cards, floppises, extra drives, etc...
you can run memtest even if you cant boot to windows.  download the program and it will be a cd image.  burn the image to disk.  the cd will be bootable.  change your boot order to cd 1st, then you will have the option to run the ram test.
you can also flash the bios by downloading it from another computer with the link that Wonkanoby posted.  just be careful and make sure that the bios is the correct one for your mobo model.  i dont know how to back up the current bios, maybe someone here does...
if you want to flash bios, use ramdisk or hd, not floppy.  if you are ntfs, heres how to do it using ramdisk:
    1) DL or create a win98 bootdisk.
you can get one at: http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/
    2) Create the win98 boot disk.
    3) Put the image and flash executable on another floppy.
    4) Reboot the computer and boot from the win98 floppy.
    5) On boot, the win98 bootdisk will create a ramdisk as drive c:
    6) In dos, type c:
    7) At the c: prompt, type mkdir bios
    8) change directory to bios by typing cd bios
    9) put the floppy with bios in drive.
    10) type copy a:\*.* c:\bios
    11) run the bios flash from the ramdrive
again, be careful and good luck!

  • System lock ups when using hard disks

At first I thought I had the same issue as in this thread however after reading his logs I decided that it is unlikely since the topic opener seems to be getting a bunch of
Apr 4 17:00:15 daxteriv slim[708]: (Do:882): GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID 46 was not found when attempting to remove it
, so I decided to start a new thread.
I am not getting anything in my logs when I look at them after the crashes. It seems as if whatever is causing the issue makes it impossible to write to the drives so nothing seems out of place until after it's too late, and quite obvious that something is wrong. The sole exception to this was some complaint about ata9.00, however this seems to have been a red haring since the complete removal of this drive solved nothing, though it did make the error go away.
I have run memtest, and prime95 (in windows since at the time I didn't want to boot my system) both coming back negative. I also checked for SMART errors, particularly UDMA errors. Again, negative.
Here are some previous threads of mine that I believe to be all related to the same issue:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195449
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=193937
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192704
[edit3] My previous thought was that this was a btrfs issue, however now I think it may be more hardware related.[/edit3]
Last night I was writing urandom to a new drive and I woke up in the morning to see that it had stopped prematurely, but not due to lack of space. The system had not locked up completely, which was new, however, as soon as I did something that accessed the disks (tried using the Gnome Dash), all hell broke loose. I immediately hit the power button, which would start a shutdown. I didn't know about REISUB, or I would have tried that. In anycase the shutdown failed and I had to hard reboot.
The evening before I was playing games just fine and doing normal activities.
Also, the other day, while booted into the live cd I think it started to crash since it was acting extremely bizarre, but I shutdown, successfully, before it could do more than complain a lot. At the time I was in the middle of scrubbing a btrfs volume after a system lock up. I think, but am not certain, that I saw on my motherboard "A5" which, according to the manual indicates "SCSI reset", but I had an extremely bad viewing angle. I know neither if what I think I saw was correct, nor do I know if the system was again in the process of a meltdown.
In general there is no activity that seems to be able to instantly trigger this, though in each case, if my memory serves me well, there was a constant stream of data either to or from a HDD.
My set up is that I have 5 HDDs, and an SSD. One HDD has Windows, my fallback installation of Arch, and daily backups. Another drive, which I just installed a few days ago currently only has single 50GB btrfs partition that is not part of any sort of larger volume. I also have three other drives each with four parttitions each involved in a btrfs volume. At the top is a 175 GB volume in a RAID0 configuration,  after that is a 25GB partiton in RAID1, then a 650GB partion (RAID1), and the remainder of the disk (about 80GB) is in single. The RAID0 is has games on it and sometimes for short term storage (a few hours), the 25GBx3 RAID1 is used for Arch as well my ~/.local, ~/.cache, ~/.thunderbird, ~/.mozilla, and ~/.config. The 50GB partition I mentioned is currently doing the job of this volume, and was not mounted last night, but has been before. The 650GBx3 is used for long term storage of just about everything, in particular ~ is mounted here. The single configured volume is used for downloads, storing ISOs and installers. The SSD is used for caching those partitions used in the RAID0 volume with bcache. I DO NOT think this is a bcache issue since the RAID0 volume has never had any errors.
My motherboard is a ASUS X79-DELUXE which has the SATA controllers: Intel X79 Express Chipset, Marvell 9230, ASMedia 1061.
[edit] Oh, I'm on kernel 3.19.2 and btrfs is 3.19.
[edit2] Also, I converted the RAID0 to a single in case that matters.
[edit4] I finished scrubbing and copied my "journalctl -b" output to pastebin. I can't see any thing that might raise any flags. http://pastebin.com/WXpbpTuc

nstgc : it's hard to tell if your problems are memory related, but memtst often needs multiple passes to detect errors.
How many passes did you let it make ?
Is it possible for you to take out say half of the memory chips and see if that changes anything ?

    Hi,
you can set the profile value FAILED_LOGIN_ATTEMPETS to 3 to restrict that wrong password entry as folows
    sql>ALTER PROFILE default LIMIT failed_login_attempts 3;

  • So, I installed itunes on windows xp, but system locks up when I try to sync ipod classic

I recently installed Itunes on a computer with windows xp. At first it recognized my Iphone 4s and Ipod classic 160 g. Went through the standard procedure for registering both products and everything seemed fine. Then I started importing my cd collection with the intention of syncing them to my ipod classic.
I should mention that my previous computer crashed with my original Itunes account(that went with my ipod classic). I didn't know how to recover it so I just started over. When I tried to sync it with my cd collection everything locked up. Itunes and my computer froze up to the point where i had to do a "hard shut off". Although, it still accepts my iphone with no problem. How do I sync both on the same itunes account?

The problem is likely iTunes 10.5, which has loads of sync problems with the iPod Classic. If you look on this forum, you'll see lots of users like you with similar problems. Normally, I'd advise you to read this summary post of mine and consider downgrading to 10.4. But you want to sync both an iPhone and your classic, and you need 10.5.x if you want to use the iCloud features. So I'm not sure what to advise, other than to use the correct USB ports and possibly to disable realtime virus scanning during your sync efforts.

  • System locks up when I open Firefox.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows XP sp3.
Two days ago, Firefox locked up, along with windows. I had to turn off and restart. The system will restart after running chkdsk and recovering a bunch of "orphaned" files. It doesn't report any problems with the hard disk.
After restarting Windows, I am able to connect to the internet and run other browsers and generally the computer runs fine until I try to run Firefox. It opens and gives the message "Well, this is embarrassing. . ." but nothing else happens. The entire system freezes up until I shut it down and restart the computer.
I have received a couple of blue screens, but they give different crash ids and the recent lock ups have had no blue screens.
I have sent reports to Mozilla with the reporting software.

Hi, please go to Options (cog wheel) - in the 3-bar menu unless you've moved it. Then in the General tab, make sure that 'When Firefox starts' is set to 'Show my home page.' Also make sure that 'Home Page' is set to '''about:newtab '''Then restart Firefox.
    Hope that helps.

  • When Entering Sleep My Pc Led Turns Off

when i had upgrade my pc with a gpu my sleep option was gone and if i click the power button it looks like my pc turns off but when i turn it back on it just wakes up my gpu is xfx radeon 6670

Hello , I understand that your desktop computer's LED turns off after you upgraded the graphics card, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! To correct this issue, I recommend following the steps in this document on Troubleshooting Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 8). If the computer is still experiencing issues with sleep and hibernation options, I recommend following the steps below to reset it's power settings: Step 1. Click the Start button
Step 2. In the search box, type "Command Prompt"
Step 3. Right-click Command PromptStep 4. Click Run as administrator
Step 5. At the command prompt, type powercfg /restoredefaultschemes and press Enter  reference: http://superuser.com/questions/669571/windows-8-1-64-bit-power-schemes-gone I will also need to know if this issue occurs if you remove the graphics card, and run the computer using the integrated GPU. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Non-system disk Error when rebooting from Windows Disk

    Hello,
I'm trying to run Windows 7 Pro on a partition on my Macbook pro retina display. I have reached the step where through bootcamp you reboot from the wondows disk. I have the windows disk in an external optical drive and have tried both 32 and 64 bit installation disks and still getting the same error"
    "Non-system disk
    Press and key to reboot"
When I hit any key nothing happends, have to turn off computer by holding power button.
I have also tried turning the computer on and holding cammad R, and selecting the boot disk manually, same error occurs.
    Any suggestions?

Reboot your Mac while holding down the Alt/Option-key until the Boot Selection screen comes up.
    Choose to boot into oSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset OSX to be the default.
Btw.: there are no OSX Lion discs unless you made one yourself.
Lion has Recovery instead OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery

  • Any ideas why my system locks up while in sleep mode? This has happened four times in the last several days. Thanks.

My mac has been locking up while it's asleep. This has happened 5 times in the last week or so. I know it still has power and I can get the caps lock light to come on. Moving mouse or pressing keys on keyboard has no affect. I have to force it to shut off and then restart. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hopefully I followed instructions correctly. Here's what I got:

  • The phone does not lock up when entering PIN code

This morning my Z1 Compact wanted me to enter the PIN code: I did so but the only thing that happened was that the text "Enter PIN code" disappeared. But I was still at the same page. It seems to have stuck or freezed. Tried to remove and reset the SIM card, called the operator who says there´s nothing wrong with the SIM card. tried to force restart with and without the SIM card. I can't get pass that starting page.
The funny thing is that on the "mssage board" or whatever it is called at the top of the phone is updating when I got a message, mail, updates etc. But I can not scroll down and see them in detail.

You may want to consider running a software repair
Fully switch off your phone and make sure it is disconnected from your Pc then start PC Compannion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue select Repair my phone /tablet and follow the onscreen instructions and when prompted making sure your phone is still switched off hold Volume down and connect your USB cable which should enter your phone into flashmode and start the repair process

  • System Preferences crashing when Screen Saver window opens

I have been having a bit of a problem for some time now (a couple weeks).
One day, I noticed my screensaver was gone, and it turned into just the name of my hard drive and the Apple symbol moving periodically on a black background. So, I tried to open the screen saver options to change it, but when I open the Screen Saver tab, the list shows up briefly with nothing on it, then it crashes. I get this error message:
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer- 10.4-10.5 plug-in.
I have re-installed Flash, but it hasn't helped. Any help on this issue would be outstanding! Thanks

Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but whenever it instals my sytems preferences die, which is very frustrating. I receive the same message as Lazula.

  • New system locks up when not under load 790fx-gd70

My system freezes up. Mouse stops moving (no blue screen). I have not overclocked anything. I replaced my stable motherboard, processor and memory with an upgrade. The system is not stable. I have tested the memory, disabled the onboard sound card, upgraded to the latest drivers and firmware. I now suspect the feature that shares system memory with the video card. How to I stop System Memory from being shared with my video card?
I can see that 1.7GB of my system memory has been assigned over to add to my 256MB video memory, but don't see any way to stop it!

This board apparently has an incompatibility with my video card.  I threw in an old ATI x300SE PCI-E and have not experienced the lock ups.  This makes the brand choice clear for a new video card.  nvidia lovers beware.
