System loses IP address

I have a venerable PowerMac G4-450 which will run for days happily, and then suddenly for no apparent reason, will revert to an IP address of 169.254.137.128. The router it is hooked to normally gives it a dhcp address in the 192.168.0.xxx range, but it loses this address for unknown reasons. No amount of renewing dhcp leases or fooling with the router helps. The only thing that seems to help is rebooting the G4, after which it will get its dhcp address and run for several days before this recurs.
This behavior started a couple of weeks ago; I have not changed anything except maybe some security update or whatever. It is currently running 10.4.11 and security update 2008-008. I can't find anything in the logs that is unusual. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this behavior? Is there some non-reboot way to get it running again (I run several server processes on it that I would really rather not shut down...) Is there some process I could hit with a kill -HUP or something to get it going?
Thanks
JEH

Not as a fix, but a possible workaround to the having to reboot... Sometimes having an all OFF Location can help, thanks to Gnarlodious...

I've managed to lose my address book.  Not the contacts, as they are still accessible through the Mail app.  System is iMac mid-2010, OS X 10.7.5.  How can I restore the address book without restoring the whole system?

Ok, you may have simply misplaced the app from its home in /Applications. First, Click Launchpad and see if it is in there. If so simply click it and once opened right click it in your dock and select "Keep in Dock". However should you have moved it, simply try Spotlight to find it. Then open it and make sure it is located in /Applications.

  • Satellite Pro M50: WLan connection loses IP address after 10min

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro M50.
I can connect to router using Congfigfree o.k., but after 10 minutes or so it loses ip-address etc.
Have to refresh the wireless connection to reconnect.
This continues every 10 min or so.

The Problem seems to be built in Atheros AR5005G Adapter constantly dropping the connection.
Using a PCMCIA card to connect to WLan solved the problem.

Found that changing the 'Power Save mode' from Normal to Off solves the problem with the

  • System loses ability to suspend after resume

After the last time I updated, I noticed some issues with suspend and resume on my laptop. Because of these problems, I haven't updated my desktop as of yet until I understand what is going on.
I frequently suspend and resume my laptop as I move from class to class during the day. In some places (such as the library), I have my computer plugged in. In others (such as during lecture), I use battery power. I noticed that if I suspend while on ac power and resume on battery (or vice versa), the system loses contact with dbus and can't suspend, poweroff, or reboot. If I try to suspend by closing the lid, it says "Operation already in progress". If I try to suspend, poweroff, or reboot using systemctl or the menu buttons, it says that it can't contact dbus. My only option is to hold down the power button until the computer turns off and reset the whole system. This is coming from a relatively stable system that, before this slew of updates, stay on for 15+ days without a restart if I didn't run updates or have any issues with hardware.
Another symptom that may be relevant is that when I resume during one of these hiccups, it kicks me from tty7 (gui) to tty1 when the computer wakes up and I have to switch back to tty7. I am using xfce + SLiM as my desktop environment.
My log says this during one of these suspend-resume hiccups:

Clearly the <segv> is the issue here, but I don't know how to access any data about that or diagnose it. Has anyone had a similar issue or know how I can go about solving this one?

i cannot pay for subscription cause the system says the address for the invoice doesn't correspond to my credit card. It's not possible, my credit card doesn't correspond to any address

These transactions help Adobe confirm that the credit card used is valid and not reported as lost or stolen. The transaction isn't charged to your account, and once your credit card company verifies it, Adobe removes the charge.

  • Every time I close Firefox I lose my address and seach bar.

When I close or "X" out of Fire fox then go back in (even after a few seconds) I lose my Address bar and Search bar. I have tried resetting the defaults and adding in the other icons (cut, copy, past, print, ect...) and have even created a tool bar just for the two.

no luck deleted the file and restarted FF but after making changes (adding a tool bar for URL and search), closing and re-opening I still lost the added tool bar.
Edit: The two do stay if I don't add the extra bar. Thanks for the help I'm just going to have to get use to it I guess.

  • IMac on Netgear X104 and Airport Extreme intermittently loses IP address

We have a Netgear X104 plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Another X104 (which carries network information through the household electrical wiring) is plugged in for a networked iMac with OS X v 10.5.4.
The network works flawlessly, but every few days, the iMac loses its IP address. All lights are working properly on the X104, indicating that it is seeing the network.
The only workaround on the iMac is to go to: System Preferences/Network/Advanced and click RENEW DHCP LEASE. The iMac then gets reassigned a new IP, such as 10.0.0.200 by the Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme, settings are as follows.
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Wireless security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address: Provided automatically
Powering off and on the Airport Extreme and the Cable Modem have not fixed this recurrent problem.

  • DHCP loses ip address after wake up from sleep mode.

My wife and I got a WRT54G router to replace the ethernet hub we had been using in order to get better reception for our voip phone system. We connect to the web using a 2-Wire DSL modem which connects to the router. From there we use ethernet to connect our computers to the router. I am running a G4 iMac flatscreen and she just got a new Macbook Pro. I had a very difficult time configuring my computer for the router, calling Kalcutta numerous times, but finally got on the web. However, after I or my wife wake up our computers from the sleep mode, we find the infamous 169 xxx xxx xx ip address indicating that we cannot connect to the web unless we shut down the modem and the router and then restart them. This is getting to be a pain. Anyone out there got a clue?

Although, you do not state specifically, when shutting down the modem and the router, are you also unplugging them from the AC power, shutting down the computers and waiting at least 60 seconds? Then you restart in the order of modem, router and then computer waiting for each to fully sync up before turning on the next device, yes?
I had the 169 problem with another brand router and solved it by resetting the router to factory defaults, then re-setup for my use. See the Linksys DSL Setup for Mac and specifically the Note in Step 6.

  • System loses the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Driver ver 6.10.6491.0 after some time

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC 6.10.6491.0 installed in our HP Envy Notebook - C8U19AV with Windows Pro 8.1 64 bit OS, the system will lose the driver. When I go into device manager it appears that the codecs are there but the driver for the audio just gets lost. We have to repeatedly uninstall all the audio components and then reinstall again. This has been the situation for some time. I cannot say for sure but I have reinstalled the driver twice now for my wife and she has done it a few times. We commonly use the laptop connected to an HP2710m display monitor with an HDMI cable. From time to time we plug in Bose headphones as well. The diver revision 6.10.6491.0 was again installed today after fully uninstalling the prior driver. The common signature is the sound does not work at some point and when I go in and check on the audio codec it will report no driver loaded. Any attempt to run the sp63407 install package without ripping out everything will result in the driver install failing as some of the prior files will has security that prevents the over write of the old files with the new ones.
I can seen no obvious reason for this laptop to repeatedly lose the driver. Once the reinstall is done the sound works again but it is a real bother to have to repeatedly reinstall the audio driver.

    Hey purplefacemcgee,
With your issue being for Windows 7, and not for Windows 8.1, the troubleshooting steps will be a little bit different. I would first suggest reinstalling your original sound drivers. I have included the document 'Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7)', please click on the option for Hardware Driver Reinstallation, and follow through the steps for reinstalling your original sound driver only.
Now once you have installed the original driver, you will need update your sound drivers. You can do both the Windows, and HP updates that are recommended for your notebook from the HP Support Assistant. I have included the document 'Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 7, Windows Vista)', Please click on the option for Maintaining your computer and installing the latest software updates. Pretty much once you do have the HP Support Assistant open click on Maintain, and then Software Updates. Please install all updates that are listed. After the updates have been installed, please restart your notebook, and test the sound.
If by chance you are still experiencing the same issue, I would suggest running the Microsoft Fix It tool for 'Automatically diagnose and fix Windows audio playback problems'. This tool will check the settings, drivers, and services to make sure that it is running correctly, and try to fix any issues. Please follow through these steps to run the tool, click on the green Run now button > click Save > open the download > click Run. What was the outcome of the tool, are you still experiencing the same issue with the sound?
If you are still experiencing the sound issue after the above troubleshooting steps, please let me know exactly what is happening with your sound. (ie, no sound, sound is choppy, or distorted). Does the sound issue occur in multiple programs, or just one? (ie. Windows Media Player, YouTube, or CD/DVD).
Looking forward to working with you!

  • "External" Ethernet interface loses IP address

    Hello,
I have an ADSL connection to my ISP. After some hours the external interface loses it's via DHCP (ADSL Router) assigned IP address and gets a self assigned one (DHCP renewal problem?). I have to restart the server in order to get a DHCP assigned IP address again. The Wintel box connected to the same ADSL router doesn't experience this disruption.
    Thanks for help
    Edi

    If I understand you correctly.
You have a DSL connection (DSL Modem)
2 Machines, XServe and a Windows box.
You are unplugging one and connecting the other straight into a dsl modem.
Bad idea to have a server use DHCP. Services all depend on the ip address. DHCP is designed to ease the configuration of many machines on a network not to skip the proper setup of a server.
Buy a simple DSL router (linksys or such)
Have that control the connection to the internet through the DSL router. It will get the DHCP address and then you can set up the machines behind it with static IP addresses. You can then forward services to the XServe if you need to.

  • Color laserjet pro MFP M177fw loses IP address

New Color Laserjet Pro MFP M177fw keeps losing the IP address so my computer won't print via wireless. What to do?

    Hi markfanderson12,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand the printer keeps losing the IP address.
I will be happy to help you.
When the printer is installed on a network, (wired or wireless) the router assigns it an IP address.
However this IP address can change for various reasons. Most of the time the printer software will often adapt to the new IP address and printing functions will carry on as normal but the scanner software will not.
I would setup a static IP address for the printer once it is back on the network again to resolve this issue.
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. Go to Solution three: Assign the printer a static IP address.
At the bottom, select Additional information for Tips for troubleshooting  a wireless connection.
    Hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • MAC loses IP address on Reboot and when goes into sleep

We have a couple macs running on a corporate network with a Cisco infrastructure. Windows servers on the back end providing DHCP. Macs are connected to Cisco 3500 or 3700 series switches.
When the macs go to sleep or stand by mode or even sometimes a reboot they do not grad an IP address or they loose their IP address and just have a 169.x.x.x ip.
We have to reboot a couple times or wait awhile for an IP to come up.
We have consulted Cisco and some local Mac dealers and no one seems to know what to do??????

Hi, and Welcome to the Disscusions robbamann!
If it's an encrypted network, One thing that can work, try this, please ignore the exact symptoms and connection and Hardware types, it's worked for many others than the stated...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
A workaround might be to use these in Terminal, or write a Script for them...
sudo ipconfig set en0 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
    Change the en# as appropriate.
