System memory usage seems high
hello. i have a 3 month old macbook pro 13 and when i just looked on activity monitor with no programs running but airport on it said i was using 2.28 gigs of system memory and 1.72 gigs was free. does that seem normal? the only program on here that didn't come stock is iwork. and as i said, nothing was running at the time. thanks.
When you look in the Activity Monitor, what is listed for inactive memory? As the linked article indicates, inactive memory is memory that was in use by another application that was closed and can either be reused by the application if you reopen it or can be used by any other application. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1342?viewlocale=en_us
So if your inactive memory is high, then you shouldn't spend too much time worrying about the amount that is "free" because the inactive memory is essentially free.

System Memory Usage: What Eats My Free Memory?
For some time, I have noticed that my computer gets slower the longer I leave it on and do not restart.
Recently, I began displaying system memory usage from the activitiy monitor to see what's going on.
I noticed that no matter what I do, the Inactve Memory grows and the free memory disappears.
I thought it was due to memory hogs like Photoshop, FCP, etc. But even when I quit those programs, the Inactive Memory remains large and only the Active Memory shrinks.
The Inactive Memory grows even (especially?) when I perform finder operations, like previewing file contents in the finder.
Eventually, I get to the point where the free memory disappears and the machine begins to slow down (or at least seems to).
What's going on and what, if anything can I do to keep this from happening?
I'm running an iMac3.4GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 Gigs of RAM and OS 10.6.8.Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean by "screen saver without energy saver" overnight. My settings are screen saver after about 30 minutes, computer sleep after 1 hour. Do you mean run the computer sleep slider up to "Never?"
Otherwise:
--I don't use any of the programs you mentioned.
--I don't think I've ever seen Spotlight indexing
--Time Machine runs every hour of course, but nothing seems to change when it does.
--My 2 TB hard drive is only about 45% full.
--I usually quit programs, and especially Photoshop, when not in use.
--I do reboot occasionally, usually when I see Free Memory disappear. This is usually every few days.
--I use Time Machine to backup using default settings. My 2 TB drive is about 55% full.
I'll slide the energy saver slider over to "never" per the above and see how things go after a few days.
Thanks for your help -
JVM performance in case of JVM memory usage is high
Hi All
Here is some query about JVM performance in case of JVM memory usage is high.
I have a server of 16GB. For JVM 12GB and for OS 4GB.
Let say, My Application creating many Unnecessary Objects and consumes very high memory.
Also, there is a gaurenty that limit of memory is it never exceed 2GB.
No, in worst scenario memory used by JVM is 2GB.Ok.
I have free memory available for JVM is 10GB(16GB - 2GB - 4GB(any OS memory usage)).
Now, for any Application processing I have 10GB.
So, does it affect application processing for which I have 10GB.
I mean does JVM performance decreses in high JVM memory usage even I have occupied more memory to JVM.Hi All

When I went to upgrade to iOS8, I was surprised to find that my memory was full. Usually it's only half full. On one of these forums, I found a solution that involved a Terminal command to delete a specific library which returned my memory to the normal usage and I was able to upgrade. Thursday I lost my phone, replaced and when I restored from backup the memory was again full. I have not been able to find the command that rescued me last time. I have found advice to restore and have restored various ways. Each time I restore, the memory usage seems to increase by about 200mg so it seems that something is replicating. It is not only "Other" that increases but also "Audio." Deleting all songs didn't help.
I sync both from iTunes and iCloud so this might be the source of the problem.
Any thoughts? Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions for ways to fix this? If I've already updated using my phone, am I just screwed?

I'm confused by the system memory usage as seen with the activity monitor. This is my first mac so i'm used to using windows. I see there is 5 categories: Wired, Active, inactive, used and free. Is inactive and free the same thing? I'm just trying to gauge how much ram I use and if it's worth it to upgrade to 1Gb from 512. Thanks.

This information can't be cached to disk, so it must stay in RAM. The amount depends on what applications you are using.
Active memory
This information is currently in RAM and actively being used.
Inactive memory
This information is no longer being used and has been cached to disk, but it will remain in RAM until another application needs the space. Leaving this information in RAM is to your advantage if you (or a client of your computer) come back to it later.
Free memory
This memory is not being used.

and i'd say that more memory is always useful in OS X -
SQL Server Memory usage is high
Hello,
One of our production SQL cluster is eating up more memory on server.
Here are the server specifications :
OS : Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise
SQL : SQL Server 2008 SP2 standard edition ( 2 node cluster )
Memory : 16 GB ( 8 Gb to SQL and rest to OS )
CPU : 8
This server is heavily used by CLR and linked server events.
I have seen the memory usage of databases , it's not using more than 7 GB and leaving 1 GB free in sql memory area ( from our Idera SQL dm
monitoring tool ). I'm suspecting CLR events are causing these spikes.
When i look at the task manager sqlserver.exe is using 15.7 Gb ( close to 16 GB )
Not sure how to see which process are using the memory.
Also we are seeing the below error messages in error log very frequently
10/27/2014 15:23:52,spid1s,Unknown,AppDomain 85 (xxxxxx) is marked for unload due to memory pressure.
I have looked at some blogs in internet, i didnt get any correct info. I have seen this is kind of bug in SQL 2005 32-bit system but we are
using 64 bit system.

Can anyone please help me on this ?
Thanks in advanceContinuation of DBCC memorystatus output

Memory usage gets high and stays high
I'll use my current project as an example, but I've been noticing this issue ever since I started monitoring my computer's memory usage. If I have an hour long Premiere CC timeline and render it, during rendering my computer's memory will go up to about 90%. After rendering is done, task manager shows that Premiere is still using about the same amount of memory, and it stays that way until I restart my computer. It's like it has locked into using certain resources and cannot let go. Any way to remedy this? I currently have 10gb memory (ordered 2gb more that is arriving this week), so it's not the fastest machine around, but should handle memory better in my opinion. I am fine with the rendering speed itself, it's just the tied up resources afterwards that seem like it could be fixed.
One more point - one solution is forcing Premiere and all its components to close. This gets the memory back to normal. Unfortunately, sometimes after I render a long timeline and force restart Premiere, when I get back all my render files don't properly reconnect and I'm forced to re-render the timeline. The fact that it doesn't reconnect to the render files is another related-issue I need help with too, if anyone can offer feedback. Thanks! On the lost renders.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1144624?tstart=30
On the memory issue, I'm not sure anything is wrong here. You say PP releases it when you close PP. That's the expected behavior. -
Photoshop memory usage extremely high
I opened a clean Photoshop, then opened and viewed about 6-8 PSD files (each one no bigger than 200mb) individually, not all at once. Then with all PSDs closed and Photoshop "empty" I began working in other programs and noticed my computer acting really slow at times. I then noticed that Photoshop was using 12gigs of memory sitting there doing nothing? This happens a lot...I'm done with Photoshop, but Photoshop is not done with memory usage. Really annoying having to close Photoshop after every use just to clean out it's memory hold.
I'm using Photoshop CC 2014.I've tried purging clipboard and even have deleted all the contents of my Win7 %temp% folder... Photoshop still hogs big amounts of memory.

Why is my memory usage so high?
This memory usage really shouldn't be okay, from having Chrome, Activity Monitor, Steam, and Skype running. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't that I don't have enough RAM. Does anything here look like is easily fixable?
Does anything here look like is easily fixable?
Nothing there looks like it needs to be fixed. Your memory usage is normal. -
my cpu usage keeps popping up and saying firefox memory usa isge is at 73%. then my computer runs slow. i did not have this problem with my last version of firefox. also usage from plug in container is high. how do i correct this?
Credit Tony E:
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data. See https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+Firefox
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use
your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of
installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles -
Hi, i've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for some months.. everytime i try to use perfmon or another program to watch for network usage (download and upload) the System process spikes to 13%~ constantly until i close it.. I could "live"
without that but now everytime i'm using an application on my second monitor, the same thing happens... started happening just an hour ago, and it's really bothering me because i don't have a clue what driver could possibly cause this.
I've tried capturing xperf traces on another forum but they keep come as corrupted as the person whose trying to troubleshoot with me tells me, and i can't seem to get a grip of the xperf analyser myself to see what (driver?) is using the cpu so i can try
to replace it...
Anyway, as i type this it jumped up to 20% and i don't know what to do.
I'll upload two xperf traces here, but at least one is "corrupted" as the other kind member on the other forums told me. (which is the first one below)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage.7z
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage2.7z
And the one i just recorded, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage3.7z
Does someone have another way or can help me find what's causing it?
I used the command xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 512 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d highCPUUsage.etl
I took a print of the System process Threads in Process Explorer http://i.imgur.com/vbW36rU.png
Before the today's change, the function shown there was mostly ntoskml.exe!KeGetCurrentProcessorNumberEx+0x34, i don't know if that means anything...
Thanks.NTM
First Xperf has been replaced by Windows performance recorder. Second there was almost no data recorded in your trace. Please run a windows performance trace as instructed in the wiki and upload it. Make sure you run the trace when the
problem is happening
In order to diagnose your problem we need to run Windows performance toolkit the instructions for which can be found in
this wiki
If you have any questions feel free to ask
Please run the trace when you are experiencing the problem

Excessive System Memory Usage in Yosemite
I am running a Late 2011 MBP 15 (2.2Ghz i7 - 16GB RAM - 256GB SSD) and I am running a clean install of Yosemite and my system is idling at 10GB of RAM used and launching even a meager amount of applications causes it to spill over into swap. I have tried formatting and reinstalling and testing with no apps installed or launched and the memory consumption persists. I had no such issues running the yosemite beta or in mavericks but this has nearly rendered my macbook useless - is anyone else experiencing this? If I can't find some resolution I'm going to reinstall Mavericks so I can use my laptop again.
+1
I think that will be necessary await 10.11 version next year... Yosemite is born bad! -
Why is iTunes memory usage so high?
As the title states iTunes is using a riduclous amount of memory of my computer 150MB and continually rising until it freezes and then crashes. This is such a useless program and such a memory hog. Any ideas on how to reduce the stupid amount of RAM this program uses?
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now. -
Very high memory usage..possible memory leak? Solaris 10 8/07 x64
Hi,
I noticed yesterday that my machine was becoming increasingly slow, where once it was pretty snappy. It's a Compaq SR5250NX with 1GB of RAM. Upon checking vmstat, I noticed that the "Free" column was ~191MB. Now, the only applications I had open were FireFox 2.0.11, GAIM, and StarOffice. I closed all of them, and the number reported in the "Free" column became approximately 195MB. "Pagefile" was about 5.5x that size. There were no other applications running and it's a single user machine, so I was the only one logged in. System uptime: 9 days.
I logged out, logged back in, to see if that had an affect. It did not. Rebooted and obviously, that fixed it. Now with only FireFox, GAIM, and a terminal open, vmstat reports "Free" as ~450MB. I've noticed if I run vmstat every few seconds, the "Free" total keeps going down. Example:

In any event, we can see that FireFox is sucking up 145MB (??!?!!? crazy...) XSun, 200MB, and java 190MB. I'm running Java Desktop System (Release 3) so I assume that is what accounts for the the high memory usage RE: java process. But, XSun, 200MB?
Is this normal and I just need to toss another gig in, or what?
Thanks -
High disk usage/high memory usage.
i keep getting high memory usage and high disk usage in ps cs6.
its slow when i open a file. how can i solve this problem.
thank you.
philip. Not to put too fine a point on it, but more than what? More RAM is almost always better, but you haven't answered most of the questions posed here. The answer might be different if you have 2 GB of RAM or 32 GB of RAM already. A 9 megapixel document could get rather large with a lot of layers, but again you've neglected to give any hard info about its size.
Regarding your video card, that's a bit of a judgment call you need to make. For Photoshop CS6 I currently advise people to try to get a video card that gets a score of 1000 or better on this benchmark: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Video card speed will matter when you're editing those 3D components and video card VRAM will also matter, but possibly even more importantly your GeForce 320 is a bit old, and nVidia may just not be doing their best driver work for it any more.
Everything in general will run more smoothly with a powerful modern video card. I like to recommend a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 7750 - or if the computer power supply and your budget allow, the even more powerful 7850. VisionTek does a very good job with their hardware, IMO, and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Keep in mind that if you switch from nVidia to ATI or vice versa, you should carefully sweep your system to ensure all files from the old card are removed, then visit the web site of the new card's maker and download/install their latest display driver release.
Best of luck.
