System memory vs disk usage -- why is my hard drive almost full if my system memory is half empty?

I have a white Macbook, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of memory, Mac OS X, version 10.5.8, purchased in 2008. My Mac keeps warning me that my startup disk is almost full, and indeed Activity Monitor shows that my disk usage has minimal free space (2.31 GB). However, the System Memory tab shows that half my space is free.
Does the discrepancy mean that there is lots of space left on my Mac? If not, how can I identify if some sort of error is filling up my memory? Right now, I have a lot of music and documents stored on my laptop, but nothing else, and I would like to be sure it's those two things that are filling up the space.
What is the recommended method for adding more memory to my Mac, if nothing else?

There are two different types of memory in your Mac. There is system memory, more commonly referred to as RAM, and there is disk space. RAM is where the Mac works on data. Disk space is where data is stored for long term storage.
You are in serious danger of causing your Mac to die completely by running it with so little free space on your system drive. It is imperative that you start either deleting or move data off the disk drive. You should have 8 to 10 time as much free space at least at all times for OS X to run will.
A tool that can  with cleaning up your disk drive is OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and fol,der that are using the most space. That will give you good candidates for deletion or movement.

  • Start up disk and hard drive almost full i have tried clearing things but it is not working it says its full from (other)

Hi so I keep getting pop up messages saying that my start up disk is almost full. SO I go into my Macintosh and try to erase some things however it isnt freeing any space most of the storage has been filled up by the word (other). Not movies or music but (other) not too sure what it is? please help

“Other" includes everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps and backups.  In other words it includes the OS, mail, documents...  See http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html and What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It? and Apple Support Communities https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5142

  • Why is my hard drive suddenly full?

A truly amazing thing has happened. My iMac, which has about 700Gig of memory, suddenly announces it only has 3kb spare! (I discovered this when it refused to let me copy a photo from one file to another). It seems to be because the folder 'Library' is overloaded, but I can't find out which part of it. I have not used the computer for anything which might use up that kind of memory (or any kind of memory - I have iTunes but that only holds 6,000 songs). I am running Time Machine successfully (in itself a small miracle). Does anyone know how I can run diagnostics to find out which file is causing the problem - it certainly shouldn't be there. Thanks so much for reading this.

you probably have some runaway process that's eating up all the space. first, restart the computer. if the problem was with a runaway swap file it will go away. if not you can figure out what's taking all the space using 3rd party tools like [Whatsize|http://whatsize.en.softonic.com/mac], [Omindisksweeper|http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper>, [Disk Inventory X|http://www.derlien.com> or [Grandperspective|http://sourceforge.net/projects/grandperspectiv>. there is also a terminal method described on [this page|http://homepage.mac.com/francines/articles/TigerMisc.html].
you might want to start with the terminal method since it doesn't require installing anything.

Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • HT1727 i copied itune music from old hard drive to memory disk the copied onto new hard drive into itunes and music wont play unless removalbe disk is inserted

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

  • Why is my hard drive full when I only have the operating system loaded and nothing else?  No pics, music, nothing...It's the 60 Gig hard drive on the air built in late 2010.

Why is my hard drive full when I'm only running the operating system and nothing else is loaded?  No music, pics, nothing! I understand the hard drive is small at 60 gig, but I can't believe the os would take up that much space.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Help with making start up disk from .dmg image on hard drive

HI Guys hope you can help i have a .DMG image of my OSX install files and need to know how i burn this onto a dvd so i can use it as a start up disk or do a reinstall.
Never had to even think about any of this before so an idiots guide would be most useful burned the .dmg image to a disk but it wont work as a start up disk and if i open it once inserted it wont work using the start up disk application within system preferences
    Any help appreciated

An image of your hard drive? No. A copy of Tiger DVD?
It could be done under Panther with a program called BootCD, but not Tiger.
Why? when you can easily clone your system to a FW drive partition and use that as needed. Or use TechTool Pro 4.5.1 to put an "eDrive" on your boot drive or another drive (~7GB) just for emergencies.
You can use Disk Utility to Restore your boot drive to a disk image and back if you want to store it on another drive and in the event of disaster striking and you need to erase and restore.

  • Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

    Hi ancelau,
QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.
    Thanks
    Matthias

To reinstall the original OSX in your rMBP, boot the MBP using the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys.  The display should show a picture if the planet earth and you will be connected to the Apple servers.   Make certain that you have a solid Internet connection and follow the instructions.
