System migration / Cloning - Copying to temp HDD then copy back to new Mac

Well, what I need...
An instruction how and using what to copy/clone my system firstly to external USB drive then to other (same) Macbook.
Precisely, I have MacBook black one, 80Gb, external HDD is 120Gb... used space on OS X (10.4.8) partition is 34Gb and full partition around 75Gb formatted.
What I want is to clone/copy system and user files (those 34Gb, not the entire partiton, cuz I'm limited with space on external HDD) to external HDD then to move it back (bootable if possible) to new a Macbook, a few weeks later.
I tried SuperDuper, image from it is always like whole partition, full 75Gb and it crashes cuz, right, there not enough free space. Is there any other utility or how to set SuperDuper to exclude that free space (40Gb) on system partition in image file??
Other idea I had is to repartitionate system drive to 2 partitions, one with 35Gb system files and other one empty, then to clone only the first one, but I'm not sure is it safe to do that trick.
I'm a new Mac user so please gimme some helpful ideas. Appreciate your time for reading this and thinking about my prob. Thanks.

OK, here's a slightly different Migration question. The situation:
PBG4 w/broken screen, running an external (duh) Samsung monitor. This is my shop PB, it's currently masquerading as an immobile desktop.
Identical PBG4 with no problems. Mostly keep at home, but also on the road.
BOTH PBs have the same dual (Airport/Comcast cable modem for home, Ethernet/SBC DSL for the shop) network settings, user settings, etc., and BOTH receive mail from my Comcast AND SBC accounts.
LaCie 320GB external Firewire drive with OS X 10.4.9 installed.
I wanted a way to keep my work and home PBs synced -- especially Mail -- without dragging the home PBG4 back and forth. Yes, I KNOW it's a portable, but as I sometimes ride my bike to work, I'd rather risk the loss of a $240.00 FireWire drive than an I-don't-know-how-much PB -- plus, the FireWire drive is a much smaller package to carry.
I used Migration Assistant to copy the "home" PB's "Users, Applications, Network and Machine Settings, Files, and Volumes" (just like the Migration Assistant Intro says) to the FireWire drive, then selected the FireWire drive in System Preferences as the Startup Disk.
The FireWire drive booted up both the shop AND home PBs just fine, but I had the following problems:
1. The network and machine settings I had transferred from my "home" PB to the FireWire drive didn't "take" when I used the FireWire drive to boot up the shop PB. Neither my home Airport/Comcast cable nor shop Ethernet/SBC DSL settings were available as choices in the Network Preferences Pane. To use my shop (SBC DSL) connection while running off the System on the FireWire drive, I had to manually reconfigure the settings, always a RPITA.
2. I decided -- probably foolishly -- to try it the other way 'round: I booted up from the shop PB's internal HD, and used Migration Assistant to transfer the "shop" PBs settings, etc. to the FireWire drive. Are you dizzy yet? I must have been, because -- just as an experiment -- I tried booting the "home" PB from the FireWire drive. Once again, the PB booted up just fine; but once again, neither the home nor shop network settings were available as choices. As an added joy, I ended up with a ton of duplicate files and folders on the FireWire drive, labeled "(from old Mac)" including my ENTIRE 25+GB iTunes library. Thank God it was 320Gig!
I'd really like to keep the two PBs synced as regards mail and new or updated files (and settings), but I seem to have over-thought (or UNDER-thought!) the means of doing so.
What am I doing wrong here, and what's the BEST way to keep my two PBs (AND the FireWire drive) all singing the same tune, especially as regards mail, settings, and docs?
Thanks!
Bart Brown

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

I used Migration Assistant to tranfer files from an old PC to New Mac. Now I have two user accounts with slightly different names on the Mac. Any way to merge into one account? Thanks.

When trying to Airplay from my Macbook Pro Retina, to AppleTv3 it plays for only a few minutes, and then jumps back to the Mac. It seems to do this no matter what I play, music, movies or pictures. I just bought a new router. This could affect it.
I have been playing whole movies before from VLC without problems.
    Any Ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes it's network issues or settings that cause these types of problems most of the time.

  • Want to migrate my iMac g5 w/sys 10.3.9 to new mac book pro, how do i upgrade to the minimum system required?

I want to migrate my iMac g5 from 2004 with system 10.3.9 to a new macbook pro. How do i upgrade to the minimum system (10.4.11 or 10.5.6 or later) required? Thank you.

You need to realize that if you buy a new Mac now with
Lion installed, all your PPC apps will not work.
You may just want to build your new system form scratch
and manually move the data you need.  Migrating will bring almost
everything over and, since 2004, there may be a lot you just don't
    want or need.
Also, installing those programs that you own that are
universal installers (contain Intel code) will
insure everything is put in the right place.
Having a fresh clean system to start out with is not
a bad idea.  It's more work but in the long run will
    help to alleviate problems.

  • How to copy apps to new Mac Pro?

Is there an easy way to copy the applications from my G4 to my new Mac Pro? It would be nice if at least some of them can be moved over along with the user licenses.

If they are Universal Binary and can be just dragged to /Applications you are probably fine, but if they use an installer, then only migrate your home account folder and install fresh. Good to collect and keep all your software downloads and updates in one place.
PPC and Intel are different operating systems and support libraries, at least with Tiger, and can cause anything from sluggish weird performance to downright nasty.

  • Can I use Time Machine and an external HDD to move to a new mac?

I'm in the process of selling my MBP. I'm looking to buy a Mini with dual screens for a better photo editing experience. Here's the deal. I have to sell my laptop first, then I will use that money to buy the mini.
I have a portable 1TB HDD, I'm using Time Machine to back up my laptop. After my laptop is sold and I restore it.. Can I plug the portable HDD into my new mini and load the backup as if I didn't get a new computer?

  • Migrate I Tunes and I phone from work laptop to new Mac I bought for home

I've purchased a new Mac and I want to migrate all of my I tunes to the new computer from my work laptop (PC- XP) to the Mac. I also want to then sync the I Phone with the Mac rather than the laptop (currently the laptop is "home" for the I Phone). How do I do this without losing any of my songs- some of which were purchased and some of which were uploaded from CD? Also, can I re-home my I Phone to the Mac without losing all of my phone numbers, addresses, etc?
    thanks!

The Apple Store will do this for you or you can call Apple Support and they will help.

  • Migrated account denies access to Mountain Lion upgrades on a new Mac Mini

Just yesterday I bought a new Mac Mini. It is on OSX 10.8.1. I set it up, then imported all my accounts from my early 08 MacBook Pro running lion and removed the temporary admin account on the Mac Mini.  When I tried to update all the software, I was told I need 10.8.2 for iPhoto, however, the system does not offer an upgrade to 10.8.2. I scanned in my receipts to the up-to-date program but they've denied me twice saying that I don't have a qualifying system. Here's the thing. My account is US, and I live in Japan. I bought the device from an authorized seller, but maybe because the receipt is in Japanese they won't qualify me. I don't think it's fair to have to buy the OS after buying the device that is running it just to be able to upgrade. What do I need to do to keep my mountain lion Mac mini up-to-date?

Your computer needs a special OS X update that it's not available. Wait until Apple releases it

  • Can I synch to PC then synch back to a Mac ?

    Hi all,
Just bought Ipad and tomorrow I'm on a 20 hour flight. But I don't have my laptop with me ( hence bought an Ipad).
Turns out it needs itunes - I'm in a hotel with a PC computer - if I synch my new ipad with this PC, can I then resynch it to a Mac when I get home ?
just want to watch some movies on the plane...
    ta

Yes. However, when you sync to the second computer everything will be erased from your iPad and replaced with the information (songs, videos, apps etc.) that are on the second computer. If both computers were at home you could used home sharing to the itunes content is the basically the same for the two computers.

  • Migrating Outlook Express on a PC to Mail on a new Mac

I have a PC with Outlook Express and a large e-mail account (POP).
I want to maintain this e-mail address with my local ISP but I need to figure out a way to get this mailbox into the new Mac.
If I can only get the messages themsleves I guess that would be ok but if there was a way to maintain all the folders created, etc that would be ideal.
    Any ideas?
Reading other posts somebody said something about utilizing an IMAP account to transfer everything but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Boan

Since you have a new Mac, you can create a .Mac trial account for free which is good for 60 days I believe.
A .Mac type account with Apple's Mail application is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
When creating a .Mac account with the Mail.app, the default account type provided is .Mac but you can also select IMAP or POP as the account type.
You can create a .Mac account as an IMAP or POP account with a different email client on a Mac or Windows PC.
After creating your .Mac trial account as a .Mac or IMAP account with Mail on your Mac, you can create the account as an IMAP account with Outlook Express on your Windows PC.
After doing so, copy messages from the POP account's Inbox mailbox to .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and the same for the POP account's Sent mailbox to your .Mac account's Sent mailbox.
Launch Mail on your Mac and these messages will be available in your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox.
Create two "On My Mac" location mailboxes in Mail - one for transferred Inbox messages and one for the transferred Sent messages.
Transfer these messages from your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox to the appropriate user created "On My Mac" mailboxes which are stored locally on the hard drive. This process will save the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and remove the messages from the server at the same time.
A .Mac trail account has limited server storage space so if the Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox for this POP account in OE on your PC exceeds the server storage limit for a .Mac trail account, you must do this in stages and although this may sound involved, it really isn't and overall is probably the easiest and fastest way to do so.

  • Copying clone drive, then writing back to new drive

I have a problem. My friend's computer crashed. She has a cloned drive. I would like to know the easiest way (if any) for me to take her cloned drive (A), copy the contents to a temporary drive (B), then copy the copied clone (B) to another drive (C) and send to her.
Reason being the clone as an Apple drive, and they want the original drive to perform service. So she has to put it back, but before, she wants to take the clone files off and put them on another drive. Will the cloned drive function properly if I just take the files and move them?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

You MUST clone, not copy. Google for Carbon Copy Cloner. It's free (SuperDuper is feature better, but costs). Clones will work perfectly. Test it before she runs off with it, though. Startup off the new clone. It will take a lot of time. 100 GB about 2-3 hours.

  • How to migrate iTunes Library from an external hard drive to a new Mac Book Pro?

How to migrate iTunes and iPhoto librarys from an external hard drive to a MacBook Pro?

    With iTunes:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to Home > Music on your computer. It will replace the one that may already be there and anything you have in it will be lost -- you could give the folder a different name just in case, and delete it yourself later.  Unplug the external and start iTunes.

  • How do I redeem my digital copy when my new mac doesn't have a disc drive?

I just bought a dvd with digital copy but my Mac doesn't have a disc drive. I have the redemption code but can't load the disc to redeem it like it asks. TIA

You need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive which can read/write to/from the media and is compatible with a computer. I don't own a PS3, but from what I just saw on their website, I don't believe that would be compatible.

  • How do I find and then use back to my mac with ios5

I wish to be able to do unattended screen sharing over the internet (remote, not local network). I can't seem to see my remote computer on the finder as a shared device. Both computers (Macs) have correct settings in sys pref with screen sharing on and all users set. Is this also what is known as back to my mac, and if not, what is it. I am on Lion on both computers, using IOS 5.
