System no longer recognizes battery

We have re-installed the system twice, after backing up and then wiping the disk clean, and doing a complete re-install of the system. The battery has an X through it, even though it is fully charged.
Why won’t the system recognize the battery anymore?
MacBook 2006, 10.6.8
Thanks,
Klaus

Do you know how many cycles the battery had?  300 is nominal lifespan.  If this is the original battery it lasted plenty long.  Go to the genius bar and test with one of their batteries.  If it works, your Macbook is fine and you just need a new battery.  I had a similar problem with a Macbook 2,1 (Late 2006).
What happens when you press the button on the bottom of the battery (i.e. how may LED's light up)?
The difference between a black X and a red X is important, be sure to read this.

  • Speaker system no longer recognizes my ipod

Wondering if others have run into a similar situation and if there's an easy fix -- I have previously used an Altech-Lansing speaker system with my iPod classic very successfully.  Now all of a sudden when I connect my iPod it tells me the accessory is unsupported.  I can't seem to get it to work at all.  Only change is that I recently added some songs/updated my library, but wouldn't think this should affect anything.
Would be very happy to get feedback from anyone out there who has encountered something like this recently...

Perhaps something in this article can help: iPod does not appear in iTunes or iPod updater in Mac OS X Products Affected
Have you tried a simple hard reset of the device with it still connected to your Mac? To do this, first make sure the hold switch is in the off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Powerbook no longer recognizes battery

About a week ago, suddenly, when I unplugged my computer while it was sleeping, to move it to another room. It shut itself down. When I rebooted it showed 3% battery, within 5 mins it said 93% battery, then suddenly there was an X inside the battery icon. I have tried cleaning the contacts, removiung the battery and reseating it, etc. It does not see it. This is my second battery having bought it less than a year ago from OWC. My last one stopped holding a charge for any length of time.
I have been told this is dangerous and I should remove the battery from the unit.
ANybody else have this going on?!

Well my OWC battery has not given me an issue, but a battery that is jumpy like that could be a hazard so I would remove it for sure. If it surges or something you would hate for it to take out your powerbook.

  • Just installed OSX Mavericks.Bluetooth disappeared from menu bar and system preferences. I have a magic mouse and my IMac no long recognizes it as such, nor can I scroll with it. What's wrong?

Just installed OSX Mavericks. Bluetooth disappeared from menu bar and system preferences panel. I use a Magic Mouse but my iMac no longer recognizes it as such, and I can no longer use it to scroll screen. What happened?

Since Mavricks installed: My Spotlight icon disappears from the menu bar, but the space stays there. If I click on the blank space where the
spotlight icon is supposed to be - the spotlight menu opens. So, for me, the icon is there, it works except that it is invisible at times. IF I do a re-start it is there. If I let the computer set, sleep or other wise stay on for days, the icon will hide and re-appear at random.

  • Drive no longer recognizes media

My iMac PowerPC G4 (1.25 GHz) for some reason no longer recognizes any media that is placed into it. At first I thought the issue was just discs that I burned myself -- they were recognized on other computers, but not mine -- so I tried to put in a commercial DVD but that doesn't work either.
When I look on System Profiler, if I click on "Disc Burning" System Profiler just crashes. Each and every time.
It is a SuperDrive that is installed in my computer.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to remedy this without a trip to the Genius Bar?
Thanks in advance! Happy New Year!
    John

Well, the quick answer may be the original superdrive
in the computer could have failed, as they sometimes
do at various intervals of time and after some use.
A replacement drive may be found at places such as
MCE and other third party suppliers; or a newer one
(than the original part number) should be available
anywhere they have authorized Apple techs & where
they know their parts. The drive has a superior newer
replacement model, as some of the originals failed
after operating system upgrades and other incidental
activity; in addition to those failures due to materials,
wear and tear, or perhaps in a design which was later
superseded by an upgraded part number.
If you go into the situation where you may be having
an optical drive replaced, and it is confirmed, then
you have a choice; to have it done there or elsewhere.
If someone there can figure out a fast workaround or
lens cleaning, etc to get it working (they get dusty)
then you are OK for awhile longer until it really fails.
Short of actually having to boot the computer from the
internal optical drive, it may be better in the long run
to have a good external FireWire superdrive equivalent
and one that does not have region codes. That puts off
the likelihood of the original superdrive's eventual failure.
Mine still has the original, but it seldom sees use other
than to boot the computer from the factory DVD installer
for some aspects of computer and disk maintenance.
To have an use external drives (optical and hard disk)
can be a better way to go; unless you have a tower.
But, I suspect the internal optical drive may have failed
in the case of your computer's symptoms. Plan for the
worst and hope for the best. There are ways to test a
    computer to see if the internal optical drive has failed;
some require an external optical drive and other means
to perform hardware tests & related troubleshooting tests.
If a tech goes into your iMac, be sure to get it cleaned well,
and the 3.6v. battery on the logic board replaced. More
RAM in the hidden slot can also be added; be sure it is of
high quality, since getting into there is not easy. A tech
    can also be sure the machine is put together correctly;
since there is the thermal paste & duties to perform in it.
{About all the upgrading one can do to an iMac G4 can
    be done when that upper dome is disassembled.}
The Apple Hardware Test is on the original boot install
DVD included with the iMac G4. Have you been able
to get that to work? Hold Option key to get into an odd
set of iconic menu choices; unlike running Installer,
where you'd hold the C key on startup... if it works,
there could be error messages in strange language.
PS: Sometimes, things happen in a computer which
has too much on the internal hard disk drive; in so
much as too much means the system can become
corrupted and some symptoms may appear to be
hardware failures. At some point, if that happens,
actual hard disk drive & operating system failures
may occur and be a troublesome matter. If the
software that reads optical media has become
corrupted due to hard drive contents being over-
written (too full, low free-space capacity, etc) then
other things would also be on their way out.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I'd love some help trying to figure out why my 2008 MacBook no longer recognizes my external drive and now is not downloading photos from my iphone....?

After many years of having no problems at all on my Macbook, I recently figured I should finally upgrade my OS. I did that about three weeks ago, updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I used Time Machine at least once after the OS upgrade but now Time Machine no longer recognizes the external drive I have used for all these years to back up. The MacBook does not "see" it. (Disk Utility does however.) The computer then also stopped recognizing another La Cie back-up that I have and now... my iPhone cannot download photos? Yikes.
I have, of course, shut down numerous times, used different cables (that worked for some) and the two USB drives. I even used a firewire. Nothing worked. I also tried to "Repair disk" on Disk Utility. It didn't work either, giving me an error (that I didn't save, sorry).
I read many other discussions on the file format of the external drive and of course I'd be happy to reformat the external drives--however, it is obviously a tad nerve-wracking to reformat drives before having an accessible back-up. Suggestions? I do not remember what file format they have but am pretty sure it's not the Mac file system someone mentioned. The drives are a 2009 WD "My Passport Elite" and La Cie 2007 d2 Quadra,
In terms of other hardware available, we do have another MacBook Air but it has  started rejecting both drives as well (without the Snow Leopard upgrade). We have an old Dell but it wouldn't have the disk space to help out much.
Any thoughts on the process involved would be welcome.  Any ideas on the iPhone rejection would be helpful as well! It is a 30gig iPhone 4 that has 20 or so gigs free (not clear as iTunes says that there are abour 18 Gigs on the phone but 24 free gigs? I may be bad at math but that's 40 gigs...).
I am checking out iCloud but apparently there are only 55 gigs available?
Will be glad to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

    Good afternoon Lyssa,
Phew. First of all, thanks in advance...these blogs are always comforting help!
So, to answer your questions: For the age of the hard drive.Well, I added memory a couple of years ago (RAM and hard drive). Being a mom leads me to eat up a fair amount of gigs with photos of my kids and, in fact, I think I entirely replaced the original drive, so it is a couple years younger than 2008 since I did that in March 2010. If there is some way to verify that (whether or not I replaced the entire drive), I'm all ears. I have 311 Gigs free, so it is not a space issue. I verified the startup disk on Disk Utilityand nothing showed up.
    Question 1- What formats...
The La Cie is format Windows NT Filesystem 3G ....At the time that I bought it I was still using a PC as well as a Mac and was told by afriend to use this format...
The WD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I again tried to repair the WD last night and this is the error message: "Error: DiskUtility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Also, Time Machine tried again to back-up and gave  me this error: "Files can't becopied onto the backup disk because it appears to be 'read only'. You may needto repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't berepaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machinepreferences to select a different backup disk."
    Question 2. Other cables...
I used two other cables with the WD and that didn't change anything.
Question 3... Fire Wire from the La Cie
Yes, I used the Firewire cable from the La Cie and it is indeed present, though still not visible in Finder. Since it is not Mac OSExtended I know that I can't use Time Machine with it.
    So, in summary...
I can plug in the La Cie and it is functional on the MacBook, visible on Disk Utility but not visible in Finder. The WD drive is not visible and not functional. So we can think it is indeed the WD that is not working.... Also, the iphone photos did, in the end, get downloaded, so it is not something more general.
    Causes...
I forgot to mention that there is a "lost+found" file on the WD which apparently points to a UNIX /OS issue?
    Some kind of "insurance"?....
I'm curious about how people avoid this kind of issue. You just regularly replace back-up drives and hard drives before problems come up? Time Machine is great and saves many of us from disasters, however, knowing that your Time Machine back-ups are vulnerable makes the whole system insecure. No way to have alarms ring before the drive goes out?
    As for ways ahead...
It seems that I ought to be able to copy off of the WD to the MacBook then erase it and reformat it and start over again. However, I haven’t been able to see its contents except on random occasions. If you have any ideas on how to copy the Time Machineback-ups from the WD, again, I'm all ears!

  • ITunes and iCloud no longer recognize Outlook on my computer

Since I got my iPhone several years ago, I have used Outlook via iTunes to sync my calendar, contacts, and other information.
I currently have an iPhone 4 with OS 5; I unfortunately have iTunes 10.5.2 running on a Windows 7 operating system.
I say "unfortunately" because despite my satisfaction with how these things all worked together, I am now totally fed up with Apple and it's supposed updates.
Today is Dec. 14, 2011. Two days ago, Apple released an "update" to supposedly address an audio issue. This morning, my computer and iPhone spoke to each other using iTunes -- I chose not to use iCloud when I downloaded the new OS 5.0 because I was not satisfied that it was consistently updating what I needed on my phone. It seems all it wants to do is update to iCloud.
This morning, an Apple alert about a new update showed up on my screen and I said okay to install because in the past there have been been few issues. NONE have caused my iTunes to insist there is no supported calendar program or to not show Outlook as an option for contacts.
This morning pre-update: everything worked as it was supposed to; after the update: NOTHING is working the way it is supposed to.
This ***** and is stupid, APPLE. It is very easy to get another kind of smartphone and these are all catching up with iPhone.
Issuing updates that make the system not work and WASTE HOURS OF MY TIME is no way to keep me as a customer or a way to encourage me to buy more apple products.
    IN SUMMARY:
    iPhone 4 with OS 5.0
iTunes 10.5.2 with Dec. 14 update
NO LONGER RECOGNIZES OUTLOOK ON MY SYSTEM.
I have wasted hours trying to fix this.

Hi, Linda from Folsom. Thanks for the message.
While I do run iolo system mechanic, my issues did not start until *after* I downloaded iTunes 10.5.2.
On the same date I updated iTunes, I also downloaded a Java update. I did these one after the other so didn't now which updated started the issue.
I later found that my issues were also related to iCloud usage for syncing, which I resolved this week by eliminating iCloud from my life (other than backing up my iPhone).
I posted something in the community about how I undid everything iCloud did to my Outlook, but my solution is only for those who no longer want to use iCloud with Outlook.
That's an interesting point about the iolo system because I didn't have any issues at all with it (until I updated iTunes).
I had a very similar system setup at the time as you do:
    iPhone 4 with OS 5.0.1
    Outlook 2007 (now I have 2010 version)
    iTunes 10.5.2
Windows 7 home premium (now I have the Windows 7 ultimate version).
I will be interested to hear if your iolo system caused some issues as I do like using it for clean up on my hard drive. When I couldn't use Outlook, I went to "JustAsk.com" and paid the small fee to find out that you can repair office from the control panel programs list; this is what solved my issue.
If you haven't tried it, it's pretty easy:
    Open Control Panel
    Select Programs
Find Office on the programs list
    RIGHT click on it
    Select repair
    Windows installer runs, then restart
After I did that, iPhone could see Outlook again. That could be where the registry issue is happening with iolo.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Cecilia

  • MacBook Pro will no longer recognize new SSD via USB

I just received a brand-new 512 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD from Newegg this morning.
    I own a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) with 16 GB of RAM and a 2.3 GHz Core i7 running Mavericks (10.9.1).
Earlier today, I plugged in the SSD via a third-party USB-to-SATA adapter that I also purchased from Newegg at about the same time. The machine recognized the new drive, and I opened up Disk Utility to format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Once that finished, I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my existing HDD to the SSD. Before it began, the program asked me to create the Recovery HD, so I enabled that option. The rest of the process proceeded smoothly. I quit CCC, ejected the drive, and put it away for the rest of the workday.
When I arrived home tonight, I plugged the SSD back into the Mac in hopes of test-booting it externally. Unfortunately, the machine will no longer recognize that anything is plugged into the Mac. I find it highly unlikely that the USB adapter could be malfunctioning; I unboxed it this morning and it's been mere hours since the successful clone attempt. I also find it hard to believe that the SSD could be broken, either.
I tried to disable rEFIt and manually invoke the boot selection screen, but even when that happens, the drive fails to mount. For the same reason, I can't erase the drive to start over, either. I've tried both USB ports, as well as rebooting with the SSD connected and unconnected.
My research tells me that people often have problems trying to get SSDs to boot when they've been installed in the drive bay, but nothing I've seen suggests anyone's had a problem booting from the external SSD after a successful clone attempt. What am I missing?

I'd start by resetting the SMC. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I have no experience with Samsung SSD's, but I've read a number of posts here of people having problems with some of them. That could be a possibility.
The other thing you could try at this point is to swap the drives. If it's cloned already and the drive is good, it should boot. That would indicate the enclosure failed after the copy.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion aperture 3.3 no longer recognizes DNG files.  Is this going to get fixed?

After upgrading to aperture 3.3 on mountain lion aperture no longer recognizes DNG files.
I have many DNG files already in my library.  Aperture shows the thumbnail and will briefly flash what I think is the preview of the file but quickly changes to a gray triangle saying "unsupported image format".  After which the thumbnail is replaced with an all black thumbnail.
Needless to say this is extremely disconcerting.  I am concerned that aperture is not only refusing to display the existing DNG files but is also simultaneously corrupting the library and destroying my existing images.
fwiw, these DNG files were generated with a leica.
I have not attempted to import DNG images into my aperture library but I assume that would not go well.

    Susan,
if it is the native raw format, that no longer is recognized, then try, if registering the CoreTypes.bundle with the OS again will help. This will tell MacOS which raw format types (and other media types) are supported.
Open a Terminal window and paste following line into the window, hit return. This is one very long line:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library
    Regards
    Léonie
P.S: Some browsers cause a blank to be inserted between /Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions
But it is "LaunchServices.framework", without blank. All in one line - the only blanks are needed between "lsregister" and "-R" and after "-R" .

  • I upgraded my ipad 2 to ios 5.1 and it no longer recognizes or plays through my speaker dock.  Help!

I just upgraded my ipad 2 to ios 5.1 and it no longer recognizes or plays through my speaker dock.
    I have tried:
    - multiple soft and hard resets (including various sequences published on this site... no luck)
    - reseting the ipad settings (location, wifi, etc)
    - 2 complete system wipe-out and restore cycles
    - changing every setting I can think of
I still have normal sound from the device when it is not docked.  When docked, my device still charges and it clearly recognizes it is plugged into something (as the volume slider will no longer function with the side keys while docked) but it won't play and eventually it gives me a message that says "accessory not supported by ipad."  This speaker dock is designed specifically for ipad (brookstone idesign boombox) and worked flawlessly until 2 days ago when I installed the ios 5.1 update.
    Please help!

Not quite the same problem but my speaker dock no longer charges iPad1 and iPhone4 since upgrading to iOS5.1 but was playing and charging only the day before, extremely annoying as I have only had the dock about 3 weeks now.
I haven't tried my iPad3 yet, but will assume that it will do the same

  • Iphone 5 no longer recognizes apple lightening cord to charge

So I have been on a quest the last few days to try and find out why out of the 4 iPhone users in our house, only 2 of us, owning the iPhone 5, have issues with cords and charging our phones. We have owned every generation of iPhones and own everything apple in our home. This is the first time I have ever had any problems with our apple products.
My problems started shortly after I bought the phone and found that my charging cables were dying constantly. Then I noticed it was happening to my other iPhone 5 user too. Eventually my daughters iPhone 5 started having battery issues. It would crash from  50% and down to 0% in no time. We were traveling with a group of parents and kids and saw the mophie juice pack and looked it up and purchased it for my daughters phone. After a few months her phone no longer recognizes any apple cords. We get the error msg about this accessory is not compatible. The same apple cord works on all of our other phones and the iPad mini.We have replaced her battery twice and after much research I was assuming that we would need to replace something internally that recognizes the charger. We have cleaned it too.
So this is where it gets weird, i use my thirty pin iPhone 4 charger and a lightning adapter and it works.
I also will mention we did a hard reset and finally an erase and restore.
After other posts I have heard smarties tell me only use apple products, well I am always using apple products, when available, to a fault, but apple sells the mophie charger on their site. After talking it over with other iPhone users, I have concluded it is the iPhone 5. My friends who have multiple iPhones in their home have only issues with the 5 and not the 5S.
It has major issues and apple is the one responsible. I have read about these Chinese made inferior products that are supposedly  the reason for the breakdown, but why have these products not been a problem until the use of the new lightning cable? And the chip in the cables does not seem to work well with the 5.
The 5 will not work with my expensive Honda that has all of the capabilities to work with a smart phone,  when it worked perfect with the 4s.
I am not sure how the iOS updates have to do with this as only seems to affect the 5 and not the 5s which runs on the same iOS.
Curious as to anyone else's thoughts on the matter.

  • Airport utility no longer recognizes my Airport Extreme Base Station, which had been set up to extend a wifi network

Hi.  In November I set up my airport extreme base station (5th generation I believe) to wirelessly extend the wifi network we use at home to see if it would increase download speeds.  Before doing that, I did a factory reset of my airport extreme, and the owner of the airport extreme to which the ethernet cable is attached made changes to his network to allow it to be extended.  I folllowed all the directions from the apple support pages, and finally got it to work.  I could even access a portable hard drive which I attached to the airport extreme base station being used as the extension.  Then a week or so ago I noticed that my laptop would no longer connect to my base station.  I did not have time to look into it until this week.  Airport utility, either on my Mac or iphone no longer recognizes my base station.  My mac is running OS X 10.10.1  and my iPhone is running iOS 8.1.2  I have tried both hard, soft and factory resets of my base station to no avail.  The only thing that has changed after doing that, is that when I do a soft reset of my base station, a neighbors airport express appears when it never did before.  I can't actually connect to it, but it does try.  Then after approximately 5 minutes, it disappears from my list.
Today I went and pulled out my OLD AIRPORT EXTREME base station... you know, the one that looks like a space ship and is running wifi 802.1 b/c?  airport utility DOES locate and display that, but airport utility returns a message stating that it cannot be set up by this software.  I am attaching an image of that.
    Thank you,
    John
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?
Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.
