System Not Booting Up

I have an iMac Flat screen running Mac OS X 10.3.9(Panther). At times, when I turn my iMac on, I do not receive the start up screen with the Apple logo and progress indicator. I receive just a blank white screen with no indication that the computer is loading. I do not hear the hard Drive clicking. The boot up sequence never proceeds to the second second screen with the progress bar or the desktop with the Dock. The computer does not respond to pushing the on/off button to turn the computer off. I have to power cycle my power strip to turn the power off. I have verified the Panther10.3.9 icon is in the far left of the System. Preferences-Start-up Disk.
Recommendations would greatly be appreciated.

Hi Ali, Cornelius, and littleshoulders,
I checked my CD;s that came with the system when I purchased it and found no system disks. When I came home from my vacation this past weekend and turned on the computer, I received question mark during the start up. I had my cousin, who wrote earlier, come over to look at the computer. He brought a DiskWarrior 3.02 and an Apple Protection Plan CD that contained Tech Tool Deluxe. When inserting the Disk Warrior and pressing the C Key, the system wouldnot boot up. We would get the Apple logo and the progress circle but then the screen would turn blank and a loud fan type noise would come on the iMac. We powered it down. we next placed the Tech Tool CD and pressed the key start up and the Tech Tool diagnostic window came up. We ran the diagnostic and everthing passed.
Still thinking that something may be wrong with the computer, we again tried Disk Warrior. We ran the disk Warrior from the desktop. We were unable to rebuild the system directory. The rebuild button was not active. Testing the hardware showed the drive normal and functioning properly.
My cousin had a copy of the Tiger install disk and when it ran showed no disk utility. His Panther install CD would not mount when pressing the C key at startup, so that was no help.
I am desperate now, not knowing what to do. Since there is no apparent things wrong with the hard drive should I just invest in a copy of Leopard or what?

I have just done a full update on pacman, and now my system is not booting due to this message

Does anyone know what is causing this, and what a status code of 127 means?

fstab originally existed on my OS before the pacman upgrade. After the upgrade I got the error message mentioned above (and obviously the fstab was there since I  didn't touch it). Then after reading that linked topic (where a similar error message was the cause of systems not booting due to a fstab), I deleted the fstab (or more accurately, moved it somewhere else)

Did you do vgscan first? What error did you get or did the command just return empty?
Is the lvm2 hook in mkinitcpio.conf? Have you tried regenerating your initramfs?

  • XP system not booting since installing ITunes

I successfully installed a 2.0 USB card onto my XP box, however the installation of the iPOD drivers and Ituns gernated errors, and sicne then, my PC will not boot in normal mode, even with last known configuration (The iPOD itself, though connected during the entire boot, gives a normal usage display rahter then "do not disconnect" throughout the driver laoding phase, which never finises. It is however, possible to boot the device, and access the USB and iPOD in SafeMode. What should I do?

No dice. The computer is about 3 years old, with USB 1.1 and sound native to the board (Intel board). I installed a 2.0 usb PCI card without incident, but after installing the Ipod software, a conflict seems to have arisen. Boots fine in Safe Mode with Networking. Leading me to think there is some sound driver conflict.

    Hello,
What happens or shows if you hold the Option or alt key at bootup?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Keep us pposted as to any progress or failures.

As long as the Firewire hard drive is a bootable drive for Mac OS X it should work with the Migration Assistant. These two companies offer that kind of drive:

  • System not booting

    This is slightly long
Summarized version = Computer boots for about 1/2 a second, then quickly turns off...
    Long Version = heh heh
In the last few days I've been noticing some spyware etc. that I usually do not get. I have tried clearing them by the normal spybot and adaware, and have found many turnups, but they kept coming back... I was actually planning on killing them all throughly today...
Couple of days ago I got a Wal Mart el cheapo Sound Blast because I have onboard, and it was on sale for a whole 10 dollars. Everything installed fine, so I don't believe that is the problem.
Last night, I was recording some videos of some games, and I did not realize I had been recording for a few hours... I quickly filled up my HDD, to 3 mb's left... I then deleted some uneeded videos and files, andwas up to 900 mb, but I then retired for the night.
The computer is in my room, anways, I turned it offo, and jumped in bed. I noticed it was taking a good bit longer to shut down that night, and was a good 15-20 seconds longer then usual. The next morning (today) I turned it on, and it quickly shut off after a little less then a second... First thought in my mind was uuhhh ohhh,, what have I done now....
I am trying to learn the tricks of the trade of computer, overclocking and such, but this system was not touched in altering clocks/voltages etc...
I have tried taking a stick of RAM out, trying different populations, but to no avial.... I also removed the Sound Blaster, and have made sure all connections are tight... Also when I first opened up the case, I didn't notice any loose connections or powercords, but then again I was looking for that, but I dont remember anything being loose....
I'll post all of my specs to the best of my knowledge...
    P4 2.4 GHz 800FSB
    MSI 865PE Neo2-P
    2 x 512 Kingmax 3200 DDR
    Hitachi 7200RPM 60gb
    AOPEN CD-RW
    Brand? DVD-RW
    GeForce FX 5900XT
Also I believe it is a 400 Power Supply, but it may be 450...
If it means anything, CPU, 1 stick, HDD, and the CDRW is rougly a year and 3 months old... Mobo is about 6 months, Vid, DVD, and a stick are about 2 months old...
I also have an old ASROCK Mobo from a friend, that will is compatible, but slow with everything... I will probably try and throw that one in later tonight when I have a few minutes to spare... I also have a GeForce 5200, but I doubt the Vid Card is the problem...
This is making me very cranky :(
    Suggestions? heh

    Quote
My system is only briefly popping on, fans come on, for about half a second, and then bam, its off again.
Something is drawing too much current. Remove everything except video card and one stick of ram.
If the problem continues, try the other stick of ram. If the other stick shows the same problem, go to the next step;  otherwise start adding components until you find the problem one.
Remove the board from the cpu, place on a sheet of cardboard and try powering up.  If the problem still continues it is either the board or psu. Otherwise there is a short between the board and case, most likely through one of the standoffs being in the wrong hole.

  • [Solved] Pacman errors: "call to execv failed", system not booting

Recent upgrade (yesterday) - problems went like this:
    1) pacman -Syu attempted "filesystem" upgrade and threw errors about some directories in /usr/local being 775 not 755.
    2) that was because I had a non-standard package in there. I changed just those relevant directories to 755.
    3) reattempted pacman -Syu but got a bunch of errors: "call to execv failed"
    4) system was immediately borked. Reboot now throws me into a shell.
This is a 32 bit system.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Install archlinux from a archlinux system -system not booting

    Hey there,
I am trying to install a fresh archlinux system from within an existing archlinux installation. -- I really hope to get help here, I am clueless.
Theoretically this could be posted in the newby section but I think my problem is more special and it's not my first archlinux installation at all.
    The facts:
I am renting an ovh server (kimsufi.com) and I want to install archlinux without their special ovh features.
The rescue system (debian) don't let me install archlinux (pacstrap error -> "mount: mount point /mnt/dev/pts does not exist"). Same as here -> https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1231074
Because of that I install archlinux over the webinterface and then I want to install archlinux on another partition.
    The problem:
The archlinux system from ovh is working, it is booting fine. My freshly installed system looks to don't boot at all.
There are no logs in /var/log (no dmesg etc.) so I think that it doesn't past grub.
I am clueless what I can do to get it to boot.
    What I have tried...
"Pretty everything" I would say but this doesn't help anyone.
pacman -Syu linux mkinitcpio grub <- to be sure everything is installed.
-- Openssh is installed and configured, network is configured, fstab is correct, openssh and netctl is on autostart with systemctl.
mkinitcpio -p linux <- everything ok
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg <- that's also fine
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda <- no problems so far
    That's all, I hope I haven't forgotten anything.
    Partitions:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 4096 526335 261120 83 Linux <--- /boot of the ovh system
    /dev/sda2 526336 19398655 9436160 83 Linux <--- / of the ovh system
    /dev/sda3 * 19398656 20445183 523264 83 Linux <--- /boot of the fresh system

    /dev/sda5 20447232 26736639 3144704 83 Linux <--- / of the fresh system
The bootflag is ignored because grub is installed into MBR.
Please post any ideas, I don't know what I may have forgotten.

Since it's a server by ovh/kimsufi, I am not able to see what's going on with grub. (I have no idea how to diagnose that problem.)
The grub.cfg seems to be correct.
I tried it again without an extended partition, every partition are primary ones. Still no logs.
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 2048 526335 262144 83 Linux <--- /boot of both systems (only grub.cfg changes)
    /dev/sda2 526336 19398655 9436160 83 Linux <--- / of the ovh system
    /dev/sda3 19398656 25690111 3145728 83 Linux <--- / of the fresh system
At the moment the grub.cfg points to the OVH archlinux, not the freshly installed one.
I have modified that file by hand to OVH archlinux (sda2; UUID changed of course). OVH archlinux boots.
I can run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg with the fresh system in arch-chroot again but it won't help.
But I can still do this and post it here.

  • System not booting after installing 2010-006 on MacBook Pro.

Today I've installed security update 2010-006 onto a current model, 13" MacBook Pro (the 2.4GHz one if that's relevant) and now it won't boot, just the spinning circle.
If I put it into verbose mode then I get "no suitable image found" and then "the system bootstrapper has crashed: trace/bpt trap".
If I try and boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD then it comes up with "you need to restart your computer" and I can't get any further (this is a working DVD as I've tried it in another machine, and I've also tried booting the installer from USB with the same error).
Is there anything I can do? The hard drive seems fine, and I can reinstall it if I must, but naturally want my data back, as though I have a backup, it's a few weeks old now.

Having a similar issue here on an Intel Core Duo iMac. Updated last night and system wouldn't boot. Some of the "offending" lines in verbose mode:
    kxld[[com:apple:kernel:mach]]: __ZN12OSOrderedSet12removeObjectEPK15OSMetaClassBase
kxld[[com:apple:iokit:IOPCIFamily]]: The following symbols are unresolved for this kext:

    Can't load kext com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily - link failed
Failed to load executable for kext com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily.
Kext com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily failed to load (0xdc008016).
Dependency com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily of kext com.apple.driver.AppleAPCPIPlatform failed to load

Booting from my Snow Leopard DVD caused a different kernel panic.
Booting in Safe mode (holding down shift) is possible (wouldn't be posting this otherwise lol), but I don't know how to update the offending kernel extension. Software Update updated correctly and there are no other pending updates.

  • Operative system not booting (spinning wheel on blue screen forever)

    Hello,
I've replaced the standard hard drive of my (late 2009) MBP with a Seagate Momentus XT 750, this is an hybrid ssd hard drive.
Lately I've seen that the system started to slow down and spotlight started to rebuild its index.
After the indexing I've decided to reboot  and I've got stuck with a spinning wheel on a blue screen at system startup time.
I've changed the hard disk and replaced it with the original one that still has the original installation and it works!
The weird thing is that if I connect the Seagate Momentus to an usb port using an adapter it also works! I can read all its files with no problem, so I tough the problem might be some damaged block in the part of the disk containing the operative system.
I've launched the Disk Utily app and I've tried to repair the disk and the permissions several times but it still doesn't boot the system.
    Any idea?

    Try a PRAM reset...

    and/or an SMC reset...

Failing this, start up from your Install DVD and run Disc Utility to repair/verify the permissions and the drive itself.
