System Not sleeping as required

My systems; that always slept and hibernated perfectly no longer do so since I updated to 8.1.  Looking around the web it seems that a great many people are having the same problem.  I have tried all the solutions that I can find to no avail!
All I need are systems that sleep when not in use regardless of anything else, just like they used to before windows 7. 8 and 8.1.
Question: Are Microsoft going to fix this in the near future or do I switch to another OS?

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to skydrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
Press Win+"R" and input regedit
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

I'm trying to install Oracle onto Solaris 9. The installation check fails with the error
The System does not have the required swap space.
I've read the install Guide I get the following when I do the memory checks
    bash-2.05# /usr/sbin/prtconf | grep "Memory size"
    Memory size: 1024 Megabytes
    bash-2.05# /usr/sbin/swap -s
    total: 767688k bytes allocated + 117080k reserved = 884768k used, 379040k available
The install guide doesn't say how to increase the Swap Space. I would like to increase the Swap Space just for the duration of the installation. From the install guide I'll need a Swap Space of 1.5 times the Ram on the machine so I'll need 1.5GB Swap Space. Can someone help me out with the required syntax to increase the Swap File Size?

Found something on the web that did the trick. Create a few files and then add to your swap.. In case it's of interest to anyone else here's what I had to do
swap -l (lists files in swap)
mkdir /tmp/swap/ (create dir for file to add to swap)
mkfile tmp/swap/swap11 (create file for swap)
swap -a tmp/swap/swap11 (add file to swap)
swap -l (check files in swap)

  • Why are the Java plugins required by medical systems not allowed to be re-enabled, which would allow medical facilities to continue functioning?

The problem with the most recent blacklist is is that the health care industry is behind in technology. Many medical systems are old and require older versions of Java to function. The blacklist has caused countless facilities to lose the ability to order life saving medications. Even my tech support desk has been bombarded with calls about this for the last 2 days. What can be done to allow these older versions of Java work within Firefox and restore facilities back to full operation?

    Hi JRChadwick,<br/>
Sorry to hear about the health care industry's lag in technology. There are old versions of Java '''being actively exploited'''. Oracle released an update in February that fixes the vulnerability. What Mozilla did was put a softblock on it, which means that users get a notice that he plugin will be disabled, and give them the option of enabling it. To enable it:
    # Go to '''Tools > Add-ons > Plugins'''.
    # Beside Java, click '''Enable'''.
If the Enable button is not available, the blocklist must have been updated before Mozilla changed it to a softblock, instead of a hardblock. In which case, do this:
    # Go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information'''.
    # Click on '''Open Containing Folder'''. That should open your profile folder in Windows Explorer.
    # Close Firefox.
    # In your profile folder, delete the files '''blocklist.xml''' and '''pluginreg.dat'''.
    # Start Firefox.
At some point after that, you should then get the blocklist prompt again, but this time the option not to disable it should be there.
But I really can't stress this enough: those versions of Java are being '''being actively exploited''' and the latest version is not vulnerable. If there's any chance you can use the latest version of Java with the medical systems, that's the way to go.

  • Hard drive "does not meet the requirements" for system updates

    Hi,
I'm running 10.2 and I'm trying to update my computer to the more recent version, except that I've gone through the update downloads on this site and anything higher than 10.3 tell me I need to run 10.3 to run it. When I tried to upgrade to 10.3, I was told that I "cannot install this software on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update". What does that mean and how do I rectify the problem? Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Kappy! I have a similar problem: I had a problem in the past and had to re-install the system. I now have a previous sytem folder on my mac which I do not dare touch. I used to have a later version than 10.3.3 (I cannot remember which). I am now trying to update with the 10.3.9 combo update (just bought a new ipod) and I get the famous "does not meet the requirements" message. I have repaired permissions and done Onyx maintenance - still nothing. I wonder whether somehow the installer detects that there is already some newer component installed and does not want to re-install. I am awfully frustrated... Thanks in advance for your help.

TD can't do it's thing if the computer is asleep. You need to decide what you want it seems. That, or wait for it to come out of beta and be shown as SL compatible in the long term.

  • Will Not Sleep In Energy Saver Mode

My iMac G5 20" 1.8Ghz will not sleep when I set it to sleep in the energy saver panel. This just started for no specific reason a few months ago. It will sleep fine when selected from the Apple menu. I have been through the discussions and no one seems to have a good fix for this. I have repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and SMU, and tried all the different configurations in energy saver. I called AppleCare and they seemed not to know anything about this issue. They recommened an archive and reinstall of the operating system. I feel this is kind of drastic for this and I have not yet tried it unless I can see that other people have done it and it works. My computer is in the repair program for the power supply problem and it has an updated power supply since the original actually smoked and Apple replaced it. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this same sleep issue and got it resolved?

Well I finally decided to try and delete an application that I suspected could be a problem not allowing my computer to sleep automatically. That application is LAST FM a music service from the UK which is actually quite good. I suspected it was a problem since it would always launch when I opened iTunes and asked if I wanted to share my iTunes library with the LAST FM group which I did not. I selected I did not want to share in the LAST FM preferences but it still opened anyway when I launched iTunes. I deleted the program and repaired disk permissions and *It Worked*, my computer will now go to sleep with the settings I selected in energy saver. I know there are other people out there with this problem I would first look at this application and others that are probably running in the backround causing your computer not to sleep automatically. I am a firm believer in trying to work up from the easiest solution before taking the drastic approach, such as a system reinstall, or a logic board replacement. I did take Nikki's suggestion seriously. My power supply had been replaced in the repair program and my logic board did not meet the criteria for replacement since it was not exibiting the symptoms that required its replacement such as video and power problems.

  • PowerMac G5 Will Not Sleep

    Gah, this is exhausting.
I have my computer set in the Energy Saver preferences to sleep the computer after 10 minutes, the displays after 5. (See screenshots of my current settings here). However, the computer will NOT go to sleep unless I use Finder's >Sleep manually.
I've tried everything here, reset SMU/PRAM/B-B-Q, unplugged all USB devices, erased all sorts of .plist files, and tapped my heels together three times: no dice. Any other ideas?
My insomniac G5 and I thank you very kindly.

Hi, I think I MAY have solved the issue here some what. Its not perfect but it does what is required more or less. I was running 10.5.7 on a G5 Quad 2.5GB RAM, impossible autosleep, and a few problems with manual sleep occasionally (sometimes would crash, fans very loud). I reinstalled 10.5.6 with the 3 Java updates too. Then altered the powermanagement plist by going
Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration>com.apple.powermanagement.plist and look for the txt
    <key>TTYSPreventSleep</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
make sure this integer is set to 0 (disabled) (unless you want TTYS to prevent the system to sleep in which case this will probably not help you - sorry). You will need to change the access permissions of the SystemConfiguration folder and then the com.apple.powermanagement.plist file to allow you to save the change you will make. (Apple + i/get info on file then unlock file and change the admin permissions from read only to read & write), then save. This may be enough to get your system to sleep, although mine sleeps after a few mins after the screen is put to sleep even if the screen and computer are set to sleep at the same time... Better than no autosleep though!
If this does not help fix it I also set the Wake On Clamshell Open integer to 0.
I dont know if this will help you out there and I'm sorry it's so long winded, maybe by the time you've read this apple will have fixed the problem. : )
I recommend experimenting with short intivals before system autosleep (set in System Preferences) and see if it works then extend the time you desire. Also maybe try this before you downgrade to 10.5.6 as there may be no need. Good Luck!
Also I don't recommend altering plist setting unless you feel confident in doing so (the admin access is denied for a reason), please don't blame me if this changes how your system works, I'm only trying to help!

  • Time Machine hard drive is not sleeping.

I have been using a 1TB Maxtor Basics (Seagate?) external USB hard drive for Time Machine on my iMac for over a year now without any problems, until recently. Between backups, the Time Machine HD does not go to sleep anymore. I am certain that until recently it would automatically go to sleep between backups and wake itself for each scheduled hourly backup. The USB HD is now running constantly when the iMac is awake. Has anyone else had this issue? Can anyone confirm that their "Time Machine" does in fact sleep between backups?

    tuttle1150 wrote:
Hey Pondini. It appears my Internal HD is not sleeping either.
Since you've already replaced the preferences file (the first suspect), there may be something using both disks. If you're running any anti-virus software, turn it off (or uninstall it). Exclude both from Spotlight Indexing, if you haven't already, via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.+
If that doesn't help, use the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder), to see what's running. When it starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom. Some system processes run more or less continually, so it's not easy to see what's using the disk(s), but you may find something. If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and/or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)
I would like to do an "Erase and Instal"
That's extreeeeeeeemly unlikely to change anything, unless you have some software that you loaded for the Maxtor (if so, just delete it and Restart).
As another poster (Kiraly, I think) says, that's like fixing a dripping faucet by tearing out the kitchen!
but although I know my Documents are backed-up, where are the other things like all my emails and stickies, favourites, notes etc. filed?
What are you contemplating? Erasing your HD, installing OSX, applying the "combo," and selectively restoring things? If so, that's a large project, with very little chance of success.
First, make a second full backup on a separate external HD, via the Restore tab of Disk Utility, CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like. It's rare, but on occasion a backup drive fails during a restore, and everything is lost.
Then, here's what you'd be looking at:

    • Erase your internal HD, per the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
    • Quit Disk Utility, and install OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc.
    • Set up a temporary User Account (different from any on your backups).
    • Go through the set-up procedure for your Internet connection(s), power settings, and other system-wide settings and preferences.
    • Download and install the "combo" update, to get back to your current version of OSX.
    • If you've upgraded either OSX or iLife since purchasing your Mac, find the disks with iLife and restore those apps.
    • Find all the discs for 3rd-party apps and install them. Re-enter any purchase keys.
    • Find the websites for all downloaded 3rd-party apps, download and install them. Re-enter any purchase keys.
    • Restore whatever data you saved. See #28 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some common data.
    • Re-enter all your Users' preferences and settings, including email accounts: account info, passwords, server names, etc. (if you didn’t save them).
    • Wonder what you missed, and find out the hard way . . . for months . . . or longer.

  • Mac mini with minidisplayport to vga adapter: display does not sleep

I have a late 2009 mac mini. When using a mini displayport-vga adapter from Apple, whenever the mini puts the display to sleep the video goes black and my monitor goes into test mode (not sleeping).
It's almost like the signal to tell the display to sleep is not passing through the adapter. I have a Dell 2007WFP.
It works correctly with a minidvi-dvi adapter, but I have another computer connected via dvi so I would like to keep the mini on vga.

The dell would not go to sleep, ever.
For anyone else having the same issue, I got it resolved. I got another VGA cable and it now works perfectly. It is possible the cable I was using was older and didn't have a required wire or maybe was broken.
