System not stopping when shutting down while lid is closed.

Hi everyone.
I have a problem. When I try to shutdown my system, and immedeately after that I close my lid, the system don`t want to stop. It just keeps on working with the backlight on, but it is not responding, and the screen stays black. After that I have to stop/reboot the system using my power button. I can`t find anything in my logs. Can you, guys, point me where the problem could be?
My machine is Dell Studio 1555 with Ati Radeon video card. If you need any information, I will post it.
Regards.
P.S. I seem to have that problem only when I am running X Window System, with and without Compiz.

Your MBA is going into deep sleep. When you restart, the MBA is loading the sleep image and not doing a complete reboot. When you MBA wakes up, how much battery charge do you have remaining.
Deep sleep is enabled if your battery is draining or near empty.
SmartSleep allows you to set the threshold of battery charge remaining, let's say 20%, when your MacBook will write the contents of memory to disk.

  • Admin login not accepted when shutting down multiple users

    Hi all
This one is curious. I have a client with a MacBook Pro, 10.5.7, on which she has an admin account and a standard account for guests. I also have created an admin account so I can run updates without needing her password. Both admin accounts work just fine and authorize correctly for logging in, making system updates and unlocking system preferences.
However, when she's been using Fast User Switching to go between the admin and standard accounts, and the standard account is still logged in, trying to shut down from the admin account gives the dialog "There are currently logged in users who may lose unsaved changes...". This dialog presents a blank user and password (ie, the admin name is not auto-filled), and the trouble is, entering ANY of the admin names and passwords (which, remember, work fine in other contexts) results in an "Invalid user name or password" window.
None of the names have non-ASCII characters, and I've tried both short and long versions of the names. I even created a new admin user, and tried that, and it also failed. I have repaired permissions.
Anyone know what might be going on?
EDIT: I should have checked the KB first - apparently it's a known issue. I'll try this and report back.

I have found that sometimes the full administrator name is required, not the short name.
I don't know why - I thought my short name used to work.

  • HP Beats Pro not reacting when shutting down PC

    Hi there.
On my HP Elite 7500 Microtower PC the HP Beats Pro doesn't react anmymore every time I want to shut down the PC and I have to end the process manually.
It's strange because the control panel and program seems to work just fine when the PC is running, but it somehow doesn't react anymore every time I try to shut the computer down.
I don't know what to do anymore.
I even reinstalled the respective Audio Driver entirely via the Recovery manager because I read here that that would solve a lot of issues, but the HP Beats Pro process still keeps freezing for me.
Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated!
    Regards,
    Dom

    Hello DomNation,
I understand that your audio is not working correctly.
Did you go to device manager and uninstall the IDT audio before you reinstalled in the recovery manager?

  • Disk Utility Will Not Stop or Shut Down

I'm having trouble with a Drobo drive set up as a Time Machine, but this is not I think a Drobo or Time Machine question. Drobo dashboard reports no problems but the drive will not mount. While trying to investigate that issue, I ran Disk Utility Disk Repair on the drive. It quickly reported "Checking file system" and then ""Volume repair complete."
Then it started "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." It has been doing that for about 4 hours. Roughly one hour into it I clicked on the button to cancel and stop the operation.  The status line reported "Stopped by user," but the status bar on the bottom is still spinning those slanted stripes and if I try to exit Disk Utility is suggests that would be a bad idea because it has not stopped the operation.
Should I just tell Disk Utility to quit or might is actually stop on its own at some point. I know there is risk in doing so, but if it is never going to stop on its own I have to bite the bullet and take my chances. I do have other backups.

It definitely should not take 4 hours especially for updating the boot support partitions. I would suggest stopping it, I would think if the drive does have damage it would already be present considering how long it is taking, not from you stopping it.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Premiere Pro CS4 crashes and system shuts down while rendering

    Hi All,
Good morning everyone, my system shuts down while rendering using Adobe media encoder from premiere pro. I have tried the following:
    1.Completely removing CS4 and reinstalling.
    2. Updating all the video drivers.
    3. Re installing the Operating System (XP and Vista)
But the issue persists, i have attached the crash report and any thoughts are highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Vincent

A number of problems pop out of your DXDIAG:
Both your video driver and your audio driver are more than 3 years old.
Your F drive is slow, because of the fill rate of 90%. You lack other hard disks.
You have Matrox, BlackMagic, Nero, Sony, DivX and other stuff installed. It has been a long time ago that I have seen such a long list of DirectShow filters installed.
Suggestions: Update your drivers, clean up your F drive and add another disk, remove all that Matrox stuff, possibly include BlackMagic and Sony.
What export/encoding settings do you use from what sequence settings?

Did you try to press and hold the home and sleep button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting the device.

  • Officejet 6600 shut down while printing and will not turn back on

I was printing a few documents on my printer and everythign was working fine, then there was a loud click and the touch screen turned blue and the printer shut down. I could not power it back up using the power button, so I tried unplugging it and re-plugging it and it did not work. I have the device plugged into a surge protector so I plugged it into the wall and it still did not work. (Note: all other devices on surge protector were able to get power, so it was not that). I do not know what to do. I need the printer for business and school ASAP and the product is still under warrenty. The warrenty ends September this year (I believe). I would like to bring it into the store if I can and exchange it, but I do not have the box. I do not know if there is something HP can give me to be able to return the product to Staples, or how long it will take to go through HP for the warrenty, but again, I need this printer ASAP and all of the troubleshooting I've done so far has not helped. This is not the first time the printer has shut down while printing more than one document, however this is the first time it has not been able to turn back on either by pressing the power button or unplugging it and replugging it back in. Any help would be great!

I don't know what Staples return policy is. I suggest calling us so we can help.
If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
HP printers generally have a 1 year warranty from their purchase date, you can verify the warranty using the following link if you would like; warranty check.

  • When shutting down, FF does not save tabs or ask if I want to save them.

Several times recently, when shutting down, the small window asking if I want Firefox to save tabs does not appear, and the tabs are lost.

One of the changes in Firefox 4: '''''by default''''' Firefox 4 does not display the "Save Tabs and Exit" warning message when closing multiple tabs, but it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
*<u>Saving tabs was not removed from Firefox 4</u>, but it works a bit differently.
**By default, Firefox 4 will not ask to save tabs, but instead it will always save your tabs on exit. You can restore them next time by choosing "Restore Previous Session" from the History menu, or pressing the restore button on Firefox's default home page.
**''<u>Note: This was a decision by the developers. On this forum, we are all '''uncompensated volunteers''' here to help other users. The developes/employees of Mozilla/Firefox rarely, if ever visit here.</u>''
To display the "Save Tabs and Exit" message when closing multiple tabs, you can do the following:
#Type '''''about:config''''' in the URL/Location/Address bar and press the Enter key
#Accept the warning message (promise to be careful)
    #The preferences page/list will open
    #Filter = '''''browser.tabs.warnOnClose'''''
#If its value is set to false, double-click on it (in the lower panel) to toggle its value to true
#Repeat steps 4 and 5 for these following 3 preferences also:
    #*'''''browser.warnOnQuit'''''
    #*'''''browser.warnOnRestart'''''
    #*'''''browser.showQuitWarning'''''
#**Note: last pref is new in Firefox 4b12, may need to add (boolean)

  • Mac book pro trys to shut down while downloading?

my mac book pro trys to shut down while im downloading for some reason..

    Hi Monroeeugene,
I'm not sure if you mean shutting down or going to sleep ... but this article will explain how to change your sleep settings so your downloads don't get interrupted.
    Mac Basics: Set your preferences
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2490
    Change your Mac's sleep settings
To conserve energy, all Macs have the ability to sleep. When you haven't used your Mac for a set amount of time, it enters a low-power mode until you wake it by pressing the keyboard, trackpad, or moving the mouse. Sleep doesn't turn off your computer; it merely puts it into an inactive state that consumes less power.
    Open System Preferences
    Choose View > Energy Saver.
Choose the Power Adapter or Battery tab. If you're using a desktop Mac (a Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Pro), the Power Adapter and Battery tabs do not appear.
Move the sliders for both the computer and display to change the times in which they go to sleep.
Select any other options you want, such as sleep and wake.
    Hope this helps ...
    - Judy

  • Do i have a virus? I get asked when shutting down do I want to continue or abort the installation

Do i have a virus? I get asked when shutting down do I want to continue or abort the installation.
    I am not installing anything.

You may have partially installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. In addition to the files listed in the support article, you may also have to remove the following in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.ltvbit.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.update.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/IM.Installer/Completer.app
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.
