System not waking up from Standby S3

I built a media center with:
-MSI K8MM-V
-Bios AWARD rev 1.A
-Sempron 3000+
-Corsair 512M
-ATI X300 AGP card Latest revision of drivers
-Antec power supply
-130g IBM Hard drive
-WinXP Home edition sp2
I have a very annoying issue when sometimes, the system doesn't wake up from standby. The system powers up but then the hard drive led stays on and still and everything is like frozen. The very strange thing is that if I press reset at that point, then the system resumes from standby.
Any suggestions?
Erik.

does any display appear, or does your screen stay black? does the monitor indicate any signal present?
when you built this system, was it a new clean install of windows XP?

  • When waking up from standby, monitors power up but no picture is displayed. HP ENVY Phoenix h9

Product: HP ENVY Phoenix h9 PC Series
    Product #: H3Y51AA#BL
    Model: h9-1387
    OS: Windows 8 64-bit
    Monitors: DELL 2407WFPHC x 2
Updated graphics drivers to latest non-beta version.
    Hello,
Since purchasing my PC a few months ago, there has been one "display" problem after another. This is the current problem:
When stepping away from my computer, I lock it via Win+L and shortly after my monitors turn off. When returning a short time later, I attempt to wake up (But not really "wake up"... To try and fix previous display problems, I've already disabled hibernation and sleep options) my computer by moving my mouse. This causes the monitors to exit standby and power up, but all that is dispalyed is black screens when I should have been presented with the login screen.
Mouse and keyboard clicks do nothing and I'm stuck at black screens. To continue, I press my PC's power button which causes the hard drives to spin-up and shortly after the computer turns off. I press the power button again and the computer boots to the login screen where once I enter my password, Windows loads and all my programs etc are displayed as they were before I locked my PC.
You can see previous problems I've had listed below, hopefully they will also help you detect the cause of the current problem.
    Please help.
    Thanks!
    Peter
    Previous problems that I've had:
    1) When waking from hibernation, the computer would not wake monitors from standby leaving no way to login and save work. Hard reboot required. Solution: Disable Windows hibernation features.
    2) Error along the lines of "Display driver failed and have recovered". Possible solution: Disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox.
    3) When waking from standby, I find my 2 monitors have merged into one, and at a different resolution than normal. Once entering password to login, programs that were on seperate monitors are now on the same monitor. Right-clicking the desktop and selecting "Screen Resolution" -> "Detect" would set the monitors back to normal until the problem occurs again. Possible solution: Updated graphics card driver. Not sure if this problem has been fixed, it may have just been covered up by the new problem mentioned above.
    This question was solved.

    Hey peterallcdn,
I'm sorry you're running into this resuming from sleep issue. Sometimes services that are trying to resume can cause issues like this. I would suggest trying a clean boot (booting with only essential system services running) and then seeing if it resumes from sleep properly.
Here are the steps to disable non-critical services:
    1. Windows + Q to bring up Search
    2. Type 'msconfig' and press Enter
    3. Click the Services Tab
    4. Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box
    5. Click the Disable All button
    6. Click Apply and Restart
When you restart Windows should only load essential system services, no 3rd party software. Lock the computer and let it go into sleep mode as you usually do and then try to resume from sleep. Let  me know what the result of that is.
I have seen other cases where Google Talk or antivirus programs will prevent the computer from resuming properly.

  • MacBook Pro Not Waking Up From Closed Clamshell Sleep

    Hey everyone,
I've been having problems with my mid 2009 2.53GHz MacBook Pro 15" not waking up from sleep after I open the clamshell (screen) back up.  When I open the screen after letting it sit for a while, I can hear the HDD spinning up and the status light on the bottom of the MacBook turns off (like it normally does when the clamshell is opened), but the screen is black and there is absolutely no response in any key combinations or trackpad taps.  I've been having this problem for about a month now and its getting pretty annoying.  I've tried a total wipe of the disk and a fresh Lion install with a full TimeMachine restore, but I'm having absolutely no luck.  The only thing that can bring the MBP back to life is a hard restart.  Sometimes when I hard restart it, it comes back to life right where I let off (basically like when the battery loses all its juice and restores everything thats open), but most of the time, it starts up like a normal boot with no restore.  I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue, but its really starting to get on my nerves.  Let me know if you have a solution!  Thanks!
    -mxbykr99

Unfortunately, I think the logic board is shot on my MBP, and heres why.  My lower RAM Slot only reads my ram some of the time, whereas the top slot never has a problem.  If I have to restart my Mac because of the above sleeping issue, it only has 2GB of ram, but if I take the sticks out and swap them, it briefly runs with 4GB until the clamshell gets shut again, and its the same slot thats not reading no matter what configuration of RAM I'm using.  Ive swapped RAM sticks with multiple people with no luck.  If Just take the bottom stick out, everything is fine, but If its only the bottom stick, it only starts up about half the time.  If it dosent boot, I get the "Beeps of Death" at startup.  As i said earlier, it's probably not the RAM itself thats causing the problem, somethings screwy in my logic board thats preventing it from reading RAM even though it's in the slot.  And yes, I made sure the ram was in it's slot all the way.

  • Macbook not waking up from 'sleep'

    Hi there,
I got an really annoying Problem with my 4-Month old Macbook Pro and I hope you guys here can help.
My Macbook Pro does not wake up from sleep, the sleep indicator is solid and not pulsating at all.
The strange thing is, when I initiate Standby the sleep indicator is pulsating, also I can wake my mac up. So my macbook is not waking up if it goes to sleep by its self.
In Addition it is possible to wake my macbook up few seconds after it automatically goes to sleep.
But if is goes to sleep automatically and I don't touch it for few hours I cannot wake it up again.
I already did a PRAM, SMC reset. no change.
Maybe I should mention that my macbook pro is hooked up on an external Display. But not directly connected, there is a kvm switch in between. So I can switch between PC1(PC1Display) & MAC1(PC1Display+MAC1Display) Configurations.
any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks, TimmyX

I seem to be having the problem as well.
Occasionally when waking it will work. the machine wakes up to a white screen and a little progress bar at the bottom. then the screen comes back.
other times the screen stays black. it seems the computer itself is not sleeping but the screen is black and the Fkeys don't work to either to either change the dim settings on the monitor or keyboard.
I usually have to force shut down the computer to get it back.
I tried the fix I found online about turing off the ethernet port then re activating it after a restart and that seemed to work.
Then I updated to 10.6.2 (using the combo updater NOT software update) and the problem is back.
I now have done the ethernet off and on fix again. I hope it will wor.
I have found a lot opf people with this problem...
I did a clean install of 10.6 and then used migration assistant for my files and prefs... but not my applications since I was migrating from a powerbook g4.
Maybe some pref or setting that was migrated for many of us is causing it...
Are there others with the problem who are on a NEW mac without any migration?
Hope we can help get to the bottom of this.

  • Not waking up from sleep

    TOSHIBA Satellite L505D-S5983 Windows 7
If in sleep more than an hour or so would occasionally not wake up, or would take 5, 10, 15 minutes to wake up.
By accident I discovered than if I had the task bar locked in place it would always wake up as soon as I moved the mouse.  If the task bar was set to auto hide than I would have the "not waking up" problem.  I have tried this about ten times over the past three days and always get the same results.
Does not make any sense to me but that is what I found.  Would be interested if others have the same solution.
    Ken

LOL same problems here, didnt think that others had this problem too. Just thought it was the way i installed Leopard ( i didnt do a clean install, just upgraded) been meaning to redo it, but not got around to it yet.
also got these problems too ... already sent a bug report to apple.
My macbook pro is having a strange problem. When i start typing for example, and website address or anything for that matter, the first letter that i type is not registered. So, when typing "www" all you get is... "ww" this very annoying and as you can imagine over time, as i have had my macbook pro for about 6 months, and get very frustrating.
I would also like to address my airport range. When i compare my Macbook pro to my girlfriends new Macbook, its apparent that her Macbook's Wifi range is much better. She is able to see more wifi hotspots. For example, in the same location, she can see 8 hotspots whereas i can only see 3 hotspots on my macbook pro. I am starting to think my Pro is not very pro, and i wish i got a Macbook rather than the Pro, as it has a better range of Wifi.
Also, while i am at it. i would also like to address my Macbook Pro's Battery heath. I use a Dashboard Widget called "istat pro" my Girlfriend uses this too on her Macbook. She has had her Macbook for about 6 months also, and her battery health is 100% Perfect. Now my Macbook Pro's battery health is 93%. this worries me. My Macbook pro's battery has had 107 cycles and my girlfriend's macbook has had 96 cycles... Why is that ?
    please help.
    a worried mac user.

  • S10e Waking up from Standby

The S10e does not reliably wake up from stand-by when running on battery power. The S10e will wake-up if left in standby for a short time, say 10 minutes, but if left for a longer time it seems to enter a 'dead state' when it cannot be woken up. When in this 'dead state' both the power and the wi-fi lights are illuminated and it is necessary to force a reboot of the S10e by keeping the power button depressed for 5 seconds or so. This results in any work in process when the machine entered stand-by being lost. It does not seem to matter whether stand-by is a result of closing the lid or a period of inactivity.
I did not experience this until after I applied the BIOS update offered automatically by the Lenovo System Update software.
If the S10e goes into standby when connected to the 240v supply it will 'wake-up' normally.  I have tried reducing the hibernation timer from 2 hrs to 45 minutes in case problem was caused by loss of battery power when in standby but it makes no difference.  The operating system is Windows XP/Home.
Does anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks
    Ian

do you still have the hibernation problem?
when running on batteries only, i usually only use the Balance and low power schemes, mostly low power - the i often don't have to bring the power supply to school.
but i dont have the problem. i changed it so that when i closer the lid it does nothing - it acts as if it was open - so standby after 10 minutes.
i think the place you have to change is the Turn Off Harddisc.
another idea is that you next time give it some time - i usually only have to press the power button shortly, and it won't re-boot, and no work is lost. otherwise i just have to touch the touchpad and wait 2-3 seconds before it comes to life
    hopes it helped

  • Lion not waking up from Deep Sleep with File Fault 2

MBA13, 2011 - Lion 7.1: My MBA doesn't resume after deep sleep (hibernate) in combination with full disk encryption.
Waking the machine up, the logo on the back lights up but there's nothing to see on the screen. After turning off filefault, it's all ok. Do more people share this experience?
    Regards

This problem has spontaneously resolved itself. Despite what I wrote in my last message, I did not turn off FileVault
Now when I run out of power (triggering deep sleep) and then plug in my computer, instead of the system hanging, I get the usual power-on FileVault unlock screen. After a few seconds (but not a full boot sequence), I then get my regular unlock screen (as if I had just woken up the screensaver).
I haven't applied any software updates (including the recent MBA EFI update), so unfortunately I can't say why this started working for me. I did recently change some settings: I set the system to only require a password 1 minute after going to sleep (instead of immediately); and I gave a second user permission to unlock the computer from power up.

  • 13" macbook pro retina 2013 problem: blank screen when waking up from standby

I bought a 13" macbook pro retina 2013 about 3 months ago and it is for about a week or two that I encountered a problem: when I close the lid and open it after a while(or it goes to standby by not using it for some time and then I wake it up by pressing a button), sometimes it shows a blank dark screen(with mouse cursor) for about 15 seconds and then either the screen is turned off(and by pressing a key it shows the login screen) or it shows the normal login screen.

I also have this problem, and now the
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M is not working at all
I use gfxCardStatus for work on integrated card and i can't use other displays obviously, because all video outputs (HDMI & Thunderbolt) are taking their ways from discrete card (but working on other displays is my profession of audiovisual artist). My world guarranty is over now, new motherboard costs near 1500 $ and now i don't want what to do.Maybe reballing of videochip will help me, but i'm afraid that not autorised service in my country will kill my motherboard at all. This is my first mac & i have lost many time for take the money for buyng it. I have so much frustration.

  • IMac not waking up from sleep after 10.6.6 combo update

Prior to update everything working fine, permissions repaired, file structures sound, no issues. After update, iMac won't wake up properly from sleep. Moving mouse (either Bluetooth or wired) has no reaction. Hitting key on keyboard (Apple aluminum extended wired keyboard) causes desktop screen to appear, but the spinning gear/pinwheel appears in screen center, and continues to spin. This continues and continues, no reponse from keyboard/mouse. Only work around has been to force quit computer and reboot. Problem repeats next time computer goes to sleep. Repairing permissions has not effect on issue, but now list of permissions getting repaired is very lengthy. Causes? Solutions?

    Macster,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job. If you own one, run it first.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then, Try downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

  • Randomness when waking up from standby

I have set up so that the 520 goes into standby after one hour of inactivity.  Closing the lid is set up to do nothing.  Sometimes when opening the lid when in stanby it goes straight to the login screen, sometimes I have to press the power button to get to the login screen.
No big deal,  I just can't figure out the randomness of the wake up.

This used to be a bit sporadic for me too, but eventually something I did made it stop resuming on lid open consistently. Not a biggie for me, but never figured out why.

  • Screen extreme brightness after waking up from standby

Hello. I couldn't get a screenshot to show this issue. After 5.1.1 when waking up phone the brightness of screen is exceedingly bright, then dims down after about 3-5 seconds after or if screen is touched.
What's gives? No root, x reality is off. I loved this phone on kitkat, been horrible after 5.0.2 and 5.1.1.

Hey, I got a fairly new z3c and the same issue.
After the update the brightness is somewhat messed up. I did a backup and reset my phone then did the update so I think this is not something you could just repair yourself.
I got the music widget on my screen and you can see that the brightness even exceeds the normal maximum settings and really distorts colours.
This should get some attention and bet fixed

  • Waking up from standby

Anyone has any idea on how can I make my laptop sleep/suspend for specific time
or even better schedule its waking up at specific time in arch.
Some old posts directed me to a utility called apmsleep, but somehow I can't locate which package it belongs to.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
FYI, I use pm-utils for hibernate and sleep purpose. Although my laptop bios offers an alarm clock functionality, but it allows only a max of 1 alarm timing. I desire to have more.

headkase wrote:The only thing I can think of to wake a suspended/hibernating computer is Wake-On-LAN.  For any solution it would have to be hardware based: by definition being in a suspended or hibernated state means the machine isn't processing information to "know" when it should wake up.  WOL would be a possible solution but then you need another computer to wake your computer so it may be no solution at all.
Sounds interesting, but as you judged its not a solution to my requirement. Still, will keep this in mind, might require to use this someday.

  • Not waking up from sleep whilst back of display unit getting very very hot.

I have had my first mac now for just 6 months, over the last 6 weeks or so it has intermittently failed to wake up when it goes to sleep for prolonged periods of time i.e striking keyboard, moving the mouse or pressing the power button. As well as this the back of the display unit is getting extremely hot to the touch. The only way to resolve this problem is to pull the power cord and let the display unit cool down before it will switch back on again which can take a couple of hours.
Has anyone else experienced or is experiencing this problem.
    James

have you tried to just let it wake up? I had an issue (similar) were the MBP would be asleep, I would mouse the mouse or hit a key to wake it and it would sound like its waking up but the screen was blank. I would either close the lid or just power down. One time I just let it sit and with in a few minutes it came on and the frequency got further apart.
but I haven't have any real issues since 10.5.2 and a few other updates.
    +When in doubt . . . seek a genius out . . .+

  • Battery not charging and MBP not waking up from sleep

I've got both of these issues happening. Sounds like I just have to wait it out on the sleep issue until a point at which Apple will issue a fix. The battery not charging is becoming especially frustrating though. I've had the computer for about a month and it just started a few days ago. I've checked the battery to see if it qualifies for replacement and it has the correct model number but the s/n has a different last for digits. I've unplugged/removed battery/held down the power button and no change, the battery still does not charge. Seeing as the MBP will run with the power cable inserted and the battery removed, I'm assuming that the cable's ok, the light has rarely come on at all lately -- no green or amber. Any advice here? I'm getting pretty frustrated with this thing.

I met the same issue, the difference is while i touch the track pad or move mouse or hit keyboard, the screen responds rapidly and then back to black. tap the keyboard, it beeps... I can do nothing except "command+control+power" to restart or long press power to power off it.
I found it only happens after I installed 10.8.2, it works well before 10.8.2 update.
    any help please?
