System powers off when on battery (battery at 40%)

Without warning, when running on battery, my MBP will spontaneously power off. No sleep, no warnings, nothing. I can then power it back on, and it will run on battery long enough to come up, and let me start a few applications, then it seems to drop into immediate sleep mode without warning. This didn't happen in the past, but I'm uncertain when the behavior started. Has anyone else had this issue?
Also, in system.log, I see this odd message:
kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 2
Not sure if it is related or not.

Welcome to the Forums!
Have you properly calibrated your battery recently?
That enables the OS to determine time to charge and time to discharge, and thus provide you with a low power warning.
However, it may also be a problem with the battery itself. There are known issues with some MBP batteries (due to manufacturing defects by Sony), which resulted in Apple extending the battery warranty for Core Duo machines to two years. You have a C2D, but there have been plenty of reports of battery problems with them as well.
You can check your battery health in System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info), click on Power. If your Full Charge Capacity is less than 4400 mAh (which is 80% of the FCC of a new 15" MBP battery), and your cycle count is less than 300, your battery is failing prematurely. If that's the case, contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Store for a (free) replacement.
Hope this helps...

  • Macbook Pro powers off when on battery power

Help! My MBP 17" now powers off after a couple of minutes on battery power. When this happens, trying to boot again, the system will power off again while loading the OS. The only way to get the MBP to boot then is to plug in the AC adaptor.
I've reset the SMC and reconditioned the battery. Both the OS and the battery think the battery is fully charged. This didn't happen before upgrading to Leopard.

I believe the color of the magsafe was green and that it wasn't charging. (The MBP thought the battery was at 96%.)
Here's the profile after I got to work and plugged in my magsafe (which is a second magsafe I keep at work), the color is amber:

Hi! My iPhone 4S was turned off when the battery got empty, and when I put it on the charger it didn't charge at all. I tried restarting it (on/off home button for 10 sec) nothing happened except it kept giving me the "charge battery"  on its screen. I tried with different chargers, still dead! What's weirder is that my sister who has iPhone 4 experienced the same today! No we don't live in the same house!! Does anyone have the same problem?

On belhalf of my fellow volunteers, the answer is, "We'll try our best."
My advice is to try not to treat this like it is a paid service provided by compensated professionals.  Ask nicely and one of the nice folks here might take some time out of their weekend to offer advice.

My i phone 3g turns it self off when the battery power gets to about 50% is there a fix for this

This is often due to faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple Store for free quick battery diagnostic testing.

Yes you can. Take it to an Apple store and they will replace the battery. If it is in warranty there is no charge. If it is out of warranty they will charge $79. But best of all they will test the battery first, and if the battery is OK they will help diagnose the software problem.

  • Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged?

Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged? or does it continue charging? In which case,is it better for the battery life to switch off the power supply or leave it on while using the macbook?

Yes, and the pilot light on the MagSafe2 connector changes from orange to green. If you unplug, you will start draining the battery again, whereas if plugged the Mac will take power from the brick and leave the battery in a charged state.

  • System powers off during boot and I have to repair

    Hello,
I am having a niggling problem with a Lenovo 3000 n200 with both Vista and Windows 7
    1.  close lid, system goes into standby
    2.  After a couple of hours system powers off ( power cable is in)
    3. Power on,  system starts booting and powers off, turn power on again and problem repeats indefinitely
4  To overcome problem I select repair and recovery, this sometimes powers off once or twice too, but  eventually system boots, repairs and works fine.
I have rebuilt system several times and tried 3 different hard disks.
Problem occurs with both 3.03 & 3.05 firmwares
    thanks for your help,
    Taggn8tor
    Solved!

Does this still happen when the battery is removed and is on PSU only, if it does then I have bad news for all you guys, the laptop will require a new motherboard and unless you have an extended warranty then this could be an expensive repair.
Apparently Lenovo call this fault a "Boot on cold issue" and seems to be a common problem with the N series which are over a year old.  I personally think it's a single part failure on the motherboard or manufacturing fault.
To find the part number for the motherboard remove the RAM and under there will be the part number for the motherboard which will look something like  1r7694, 43n7652, 41r7695, 43n7654 etc.
The problem you have here is will a replacement motherboard after a year have the same fault?
I would also look up the Consumer Protection act and check out the part which says Fit for Purpose.

  • Laptop randomly switches off when on battery power.

When on battery power my HP DV3500EA laptop randomly switches off (this is only a recent problem). This is when there is still significant charge on the battery. This does not happen when on AC power. Once it has switched off, the laptop is able to be switched back on again and run normally until the next time it switches itself off. It doesn't shut down, it just turns off immediately as if the battery has run out. I have checked that it is not overheating - the CPU temp is generally between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius. I know this isn't a software problem because it does this on different operating systems (Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux). I assume this means it must be a hardware problem, but I can't work out what it is or how to fix it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Exact same problem with my Envy 13 running with windows 7... any solution besides bringing the laptop back to the store?

  • Randomly Shutting Off When On Battery Power

So, I recently had my logic board replaced because my built-in audio out port wasn't working. I had this done more than a week ago, but just 2 days ago I was using it without being plugged in for over an hour (the battery indicator said I had about 50 minutes left of power) and then suddenly, it just shuts down. I hit the power key, and hear the startup "ding", and then hear it shut down seconds later. I plug it in, and start it up, and it works fine. Then last night I was using it on battery power again, and when the battery said 57 minutes left, it just shut down.
Could this be from my new logic board?

    Hi E,
Unlikely, but possible. More likely the batt is dying. Time indicators have never been known for their accuracy, and a batt starting to die increases that problem. Check the condition of the batt (Apple Menu:About This Mac:More Info:Power) and post back.

  • PC Powers off when downloading through iTunes

This is totally weird, and 100% replicatable.
I initially discovered this when I got support to help me recover some lost music. It showed up in my downloads section. It started to download, then instantly my PC is powered off.
No blue screen, no error of any kind. One second, happy iTunes progress bars, the next second, powered off. This is a Laptop in a dock using AC power, so it's bypassing battery power too. It just clicks and is powered off.
I reinstalled iTunes and was able to download everything. I assumed the issue was resolved until I bought something new and it happened again during the initial download of that new album. Now it's happening everytime I try to download, new or recovered purchases. I've yet to be able to download the last album I paid for.
    Help?

Since you're getting that when doing Store stuff, if you've got a Radeon-based display adaptor or video card, I'd try updating your video drivers as per:

  • Samsung Gusto 2 powers off when close the lid

Saw another thread ("powers off randomly") about this and no answers were ever posted.
Is there a solution? Phone has plenty of charge in the battery and works fine when it's powered on. It just powers off immediately when I close it.

Removed battery and reseated. The phone now seems to remain in the powered on state when I close the lid.

  • MicroPhoto flashes and powers off when connected to compu

I bought a microphoto about six months back and had no problems with it until the last week or so. First it became more difficult to get the power on- I'd have to hold the switch in the power on position for a few seconds. But now- every time I plug the player into the computer- the screen shows a quick white flash and the player powers off. I am not able to get the power back on unless I move the battery around. And then- when the power comes back on- I invariably get a "low battery" message, even if the battery was fully charged before I plugged the player into the computer. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

  • MPB Powers OFF when I connect the power cord

Just got a new MBP this weekend. When I connect the power cord after the battery gets low, the computer instantly shuts off. No warning, just shuts off. The battery can be at any charge level, and this will happen. Pull the power cord off, no problem. Put it back on, the computer is off. I have to restart, unsaved changes lost. This is my second MBP, and the first one never did this. I am about to drag it in to the Genius bar, but has this happened to anyone else? Sounds like a bad hardware issue to me. Could it be a settings issue? I've only been using it for about three days. Thanks in advance.
