Never-ending "Your network settings have been changed" message; fix
Some users have reported an issue wherein, after applying Security Update 2008-006 for Mac OS X 10.4.11, their systems repeatedly display the message "Your network settings have been changed by another application." This message is sometimes accompanied by dropous in wireless connectivity.
The potential fix is as follows:
Delete the following files from Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
com.apple.nat.plist
then restart.
This fix is similar to one that we've recommended for wireless connectivity issues after various security and system updates. It's a good first line of attack if you're having such problems after an incremenal Mac OS X or security update.

Unable to select modem in the "Show" field in System Prefs, Network
I think I may have asked this in the wrong place before. I really would appreciate any help or advice anyone can give!!
I've just moved and I'm trying to get the modem there to work with my iBook G4. The modem definitely works and it's all definitely set up (my boyfriend's sorted his out on his PC), just not with my computer.
In the user guide (from the provider - Tiscali) I'm told to go to System Prefs (fine), Network (fine), select Location as "ADSL USB PPPoE/PPPoA" (fine) but then I encounter a problem - I am told to set the "Show" field just below to the modem name (which comes up in my Network status as "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)", so my computer is recognising it). However, this isn't an option. Also, when I go to the screen where I can prioritise the internet connections (Network Status?? Sorry for not being more specific - I'm at work and on a PC) "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)" is there but grey, as in I can't select it.
Any ideas what I can do? I've installed all of the CD and did my restarting, I have the modem plugged in and my computer is recognising this, and the people at Tiscali said I'd have to contact Apple for help but I decided to give here a try.
Thank you !
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.5) Tiscali Broadband, Sagem F@st 800 ModemPlease don't misunderstand, but many of the Internet service providers in the UK and much of Europe use USB Modems and they are fair to poor at best.
Another point of intrest is that all of these same Internet Service Providers also have and offer Ethernet Modems as well as Ethernet Modem Routers.
I think it must be a cost issue for them. Another point is the technology is exactly the same weather you have a PC or a MAC, the reason they all point the finger in another direction , they have few Mac Techs available, when PC's hold the majority of the market. Another point, you shouldn't need to download there software to make stuff work.
Here are a couple of links that will for sure help.
http://www.adslguide.org/guide/summary.asp
Here is one of several that are Ethernet instead of USB from your provider.

System Prefs show Airport "OFF" but in menu bar I can turn on... pls look
Good day.
System Profiler sees the Airport card however shows no network. (This has been running with no problems for months)
System Prefs, Network shows the Airport card as "OFF" even tho I can turn it "on" up on the menu bar. (it takes two times to turn it on via the network bar)
It still cannot see the network. (I am 802.11n everywhere and I'm using my MBP on the network I've been using for months)
The bottom line is I can't get my MacPro 3.0Ghz to see the network and the system profes show it's on even tho I can turn it on and off via the network bar.
Note: I've also plugged in a airport express via the Mac Pro's enet port and it simply cannot see it.
Any advise please.
Thanks
TomI am having a very similar problem. Did you find any fixes for this?
I have a snow base station and have no problems connecting to it with a clamshell iBook running OS X. But with my PowerBook G4, whenever I turn Airport on and try to access the base station, the airport status icon constantly flashes, almost like a pulse.
Today I took my PowerBook to a hot spot, and Airport worked great, so I know that my card is fine.
One thing I'm wondering about -- what firmware are you using on your base station? I currently have 4.0.4, so it's possible that upgrading to 4.0.9 will solve this problem. I'm reluctant for the moment to try the firmware upgrade because the clamshell iBook connects to the snow base station so smoothly. I don't want to mess up one set-up while trying to fix another.
I'll check back in case you have new information, including (I hope) a fix for this.

My System Pref "Airport" forgets my WPA code every time when I restart it!!
A couple of days ago I recieved a wireless modem, a SpeedTouch 716.
It works great and there are no problems. But....in my system pref "NETWORK", subtab "AIRPORT" you can fill in your network (in this case Speedtouch) and your security password (WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc etc).
When I fill in the code (which was delivered with my wireless modem....in this case I used the WPA code)....everything works! It's secured.
But then.....when I close that system pref....and I open it again or restart my computer.....the code is gone....I have to type it in again!!!!!
It only remembers the Speedtouch name.
How can I rexsolve this???? If I close the Keychain-lock in the leftcorner...it makes no difference....the code vanishes eveytime I watch the system pref.
HELP ME!!!!Connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes. that is what the screen is telling you to do.

G4 ethernet stops working, system prefs hangs
Hello, I have an old g4 power mac working as a server. O.S. is 10.4.11, connected with ethernet over several switches and a ( new ) router with fixed i.p. addresses. The other computers are intel machines with MAC 10.6 . This configuration has worked fine for years. (of-coarse with the different O.s.ses)
When I start up the g4 it works fine and its disks are accessible by the other computers; but after a few ours the connection disappears. When I try to have a look in systems prefs- network the systems pref hangs itself.??? Can anyone tell me watts going on here?
The things I changed lately are the new router and "snow"
Thanks in advance
Jos.Yes, ethernet is there, correct I.P. number, and stronger: internet is working!
"configuration kind = " INFORM" for IPv4 " looks strange to me ? -
Sys Pref Network Hanging - going crazy
When I go to System Pref > Network a drop down occurs saying "Your network setting have been changed by another application"
I click OK and it keeps dropping. I have to force quit the system pref app.
I've tried deleting any prefs in my user lib having anything to do with "network" and nothing helps.
Any ideas, this is driving me crazy.Hi Robert,
Did you try this cure for Security update, that aren't in your User's folder...

Cannot use System Pref's/Network -- dialog box won't go stay gone
G5 running Tiger, browsers, Mail and other internet functions (DSL, PPPoE) work fine BUT: if I boot the Network app in System Pref's, it shows a dialog box that says "Your network settings have been changed by another application." If I press OK the box goes away for a second and then returns -- there is no way to proceed, or use this app -- the only thing I can do is for Systems Pref's to quit. In other words, it won't take OK for an answer!
Some notes: 1) Network diagnostics from the Help menu says everything is normal. 2) I did move my Ethernet connection to another computer to run that one -- this Mac was off at the time. I did not change any modem or router settings, and this Mac, as I said, works fine except for the above problem. 3) an app called "Internet Connect" in the apps folder will not boot (don't know what this is); 4) the utilities Netinfo Mgr and Network Utility don't tell my anything useful or at least that I can understand. How do I reset the SystemPref's/Network app or whatever it is so I can use it? Thanks.Hi,

Can I use ARD to 'push' System Prefs LANGUAGE &TEXT to network
Can I utiise ARD to 'push' System Prefs LANGUAGE &TEXT to all macs on our network?
How would this be achieved?
Currently whenever a user logs into a workstation for the first time, their Language & Text prefs change from English language and UK Region date and Currency (£), to US date and Currency ($).
This is despite the 'Master'Client being set up with UK dates and currency prior to Image Creation...
If I can resolve this on the Master before creating an image rather than post deployment via ARD, I would rather do this but AppleCare Premium Support line for UK could not assist other tham referring to +http://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=22278+ Surely others have faced this issue? It depends on what you mean by 'push'?

What is the Profile Drawer in Network System Prefs for?
I'm struggling with my very illogical d-link DWL-G122. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... blah... Anyway, that's a different story. My question is, what is the Profile Drawer for in Network System Prefs? I can add my available wireless network, but it works even if it's not added. And why would I want to edit/activate/delete it etc? I've done a quick search and can't find any documentation to help me understand it. Can anyone help?
THANKS!It's not really to add your network, it's to keep others out. If you have a neighbor with a strong signal you keep automatically switching to, you can eliminate that by using the list of preferred networks. Of course, if he has a reliable connection and you don't, that might not be desirable...

Access to non-apple system prefs
We are in a corporate environment. When setting up new Macs we turn off access to the System Preferences using the Accounts Control Panel. We want to prevent users from changing Network settings, Sharing options, etc. that we setup up for our company.
The problem with this is when we install software for third-party products such as mice or graphics tablets. Many of these items install Control Panels that are accessed only through the System Preferences, but a non-admin user cannot go in and change the individual settings for these devices without having full admin rights to the System Preferences.
Are there any workarounds for being able to control which Control Panels users have access to when using System Preferences?
Thanks for any help!If your users are non-admins, they shouldn't be able
to change the Sharing or Network prefs unless they
enter an admin password. When setting up the new
accounts, go into those prefs and ensure the little
padlock icon is locked.
Apparently this has improved over earlier versions of OS X when I wasn't looking. When we intially loaded OS X I remember turning on the access to System Prefs and locking the various control panels for the non-admin users, but I recall that some of them didn't stay locked. That's why we started turning off access to them completly. After that initial install of our desktop Macs I never tried this again. We've updated the OS a couple times, but never went in and tried this again because everything was working fine. But when I went to setup some new laptops with wireless mice that had their own control panels this became an issue and that's why I was looking for the workaround. It would be nice if Apple gave you a way in System Preferences to turn on/off access to the individual CPs without having to muck with system like this. But this will work for now. -
Safari says not connected to internet- System Prefs does...
OK, I'm not extremely computer savvy, but I'm not totally ignorant either. But I have a network connection problem that I have absolutely no idea what's going on. I have a black MacBook Pro, and am running 10.4.11. I have an airport express at home, and never had any access/connection trouble. Where I work (a university), there is an open network we can access, but for some reason, I cannnot. My airport status indicator shows full strength, and systems prefs gives me the connection is A-OK message with the green light, saying I'm connected to this network, but when I open Safari (or Firefox), it tells me I am not connected to the internet. Another interesting thing is when I open itunes in this situation, it finds shared music libraries on the network, but it will not connect to them. This is the only network I have ever used where this is happening. Also, other people seem to be able to access this network with no trouble with Powerbook G4s. Does anyone have similar problems or any ideas at all on this one?
My guess is that you're not authenticated on the network and, for that, you should talk to the sysops there. Most universities have "open" networks that still require authentication, meaning they're open to the university users but not to everyone.

Cannot change user passwords in System Prefs
They just don't "take." I can change passwords as root in terminal using passwd no problem but not in System Prefs pane.
The secure.log hints that something happens:
Apr 20 19:08:01 Dualie com.apple.SecurityServer: Succeeded authorizing right system.preferences by process /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Resources/writeconfig for authorization created by /Applications/System Preferences.app.
But then I try to use that password and:
Apr 20 19:10:03 Dualie SecurityAgent[1846]: User Authenticated: continue login process
Apr 20 19:10:03 Dualie com.apple.SecurityServer: authinternal failed to authenticate user lucy.
Ideas?
G4/400 with 2x500 Sonnet accelerator Mac OS X (10.4.6) Gobs of ramI had a similar problem ---- The initial problem was that my AirPort network password wouldn’t stay set and when I attempted to change the settings in the Network pane, I got a dialog box which said: “Please enter your keychain password --- System Preferences wants to use keychain ‘System.’ “ I opened “Details” and it showed Keychain: System Keychain and Application: System Preferences. I thought I had corrupted my keychain and first created a new keychain per the Mac Help instructions. This did not correct the problem and I made a screen shot *using Snapz Pro) to send to Apple or MacFixIt; I noticed that the title bar said SecurityAgentScreen which was the first time i heard of SecurityAgent --- and there is not much in the way of documentation on it.
My next attempt was to rebuild my System which did not fix the problem, so I called apple Technical Support. I was directed to move the Keychain folder from my Home directory (Home/Library/Keychains) to the Desktop and reboot. This corrected the problem, however, there is suspicious difference: the new Keychains folder contains only “login.keychain.” I surmise that the keychains are now invisible and encrypted, and, are accessed via SecurityAgent which was introduced in 10.4.1 ,SecurityAgent was most probably developed to correct keychain vulnerabilities, but.I have not been find any documentation, or at least any that I can comprehend.

System Prefs not showing all disks
It's been some time since I backed up and I've just copied over to my Lacie 500 drive the contents of my main drive. On checking with Startup Drive in System Prefs I note that I don't see the Lacie nor my second HD which I use with FCP editing content. (I was going to treat my Lacie to being the startup Drive as a test). What I have sshowing is the normal HD startup drive and Network Startup showing. No second HD nor the Lacie. In About This Mac, no Lacie drive is showing.
What have I cocked up, if anything?I'm wondering why mine now aren't! I've cocked up something and maybe the drives need validating?
I thought this was answered. You copied over the contents of your internal either by dragging or using copy and paste. Startup Disc is looking for volumes that will boot the computer; that's why it's called "startup..." I'm beginning to think your drives were never bootable and therefore, never available in Startup Disc.
You can continue using these drives as data drives by dragging things over, but if you want a bootable drive -- and this can be very useful if your internal ever fails, and be up and running right away, or if the internal, startup Volume starts to show serious problems, in which case you can always do a reverse clone from a healthy external back to the internal -- you need to make a clone.
There are two distinct ways you have of creating a bootable, i.e. startup copy of your Internal. You can use Restore from Disc Utility, or, generally much more practical, you can use a cloning application.
There are several; the one I use, which is excellent and is freeware, is Carbon Copy Cloner. Once you do the initial clone, CCC offers the option of doing incremental backups. This will keep the clone looking exactly like the internal (or, since it's a MacPro, secondary drive.)
There is lots of documentation about using CCC and help for getting started at the site.
http://www.bombich.com/
You need to start from a clean, properly Formatted (this is done from the Partitioning area of DU) drive. See this about Formatting. (You have to find out if your MacPro is PPC or Intel. PPC will be Formatted APM (Apple Partition Map) and Intel will be Formatted GUID. For that, look in the Apple Menu> About this Mac>More info> Processor.) Note that Formatting will erase all the data currently on the drive.

On G4 Powerbook System Preferences, Network, have a dropdown menu that says this has been configured by another application. when press OK it keeps coming on & can't work in System Preferences. It won't even respond to Quit System Preferences and I have to Force Quit to close System Pref.
Any ideas?Look at this link. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9372513
I did BDAqua's suggestion
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

System Pref "Security" crashes before opening
Hi. I'm appending the crash report from my latest attempt to open the Security module of my system prefs. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the whole system to fix this. I haven't been able to open Security for about 6 months, but I use Little Snitch so it hasn't been a real problem until now, when I have to set privacy permissions on a couple of folders.
When I click, Security tries to open, hangs, and eventually crashes. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
