System Preference Extension Grayed (disabled)

Hello.
Macbook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.2
I am the administrator.
In system preference:
Extension, sharing, and profiles are unable to be opened. They are "grayed' out.
I was wondering if this had anything to do with a workgroup manager being able to disable this?
I've googled this and nothing really works. I've logged in as root and done a rest. If I double click the tab in the dock the options are available; however, the function is not available. So that fix didn't work.
How can I get this to be available?
Thanks

Trry this, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this file to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Try opening .mac in Safe Mode, reboot.

  • How do I turn Exposé/Spaces off, without access to System Preferences because I disabled it's space?

I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if   I cannot access it though System Preferences?

After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens.  After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
    I am really relieved now!!

  • I am trying to revert my Java to 1.6 from 1.7. The System Preferences Java icon is disabled. But when I enter java -version in terminal it shows 1.6.0_65.  Please help me in giving explicit commands to get back my Java 1.6

I earlier had a java 1.7 installed in my system.  I wanted to revert the version back to 1.6.  I downloaded the file JavaForOSX2014-001.dmg and installed it in my hard disk.  I am not sure where it has installed it but it has successfully done it.  When I open up the terminal and enter java -version it shows 1.6.0_65 version as the java version.
But in the System Preferences, Java is disabled and does not show the java as being installed.  Please guide me in getting my java 1.6 back.

The preferences pain shows this message when I click on the Java icon -- “Java can’t be opened because it isn’t available".

  • I can't save system preferences

I am trying to save the Date & Time preferences to have the date and time displayed in the menu bar. I go into system preferences/date $ time, make sure it is unlocked, and click the checkbox to 'show the date and time'. However, the setting does not save and always reverts back to unchecked. I am the administrator of the computer however, all of the files in the system folder, including the preference pane files are read-only. Every user on the machine has the same issue, even if I create a new user. Any idea what is going on? Is it possible that the ability to save changes to the system preferences has been disabled? I have already run the repair disk permissions but that did not help.

I tried deleting that file from the system folder but when I do that and reboot it does not get recreated.
AHA, good sleuthing, we have a deeper problem, may I suggest...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Managed Client System Preference problem

I am pushing out MCX to my 10.5/10.6 clients. I'd like to manage the System Preferences pane, disabling Time Machine and Accounts preferences. However, if I manage ANY preferences, the "Other" system preference pane becomes disabled. I can't find a way to explicitly turn these "other" preferences back on. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would get my install DVD out and do an archive and install.

  • Cannot quit system preferences

Odd situation. My son's MacBook, running SnowLeopard, suddenly can't shut down System preferences. When we try to quit... we notice the 'Quit System Preferences" is grayed out; we can't 'x' out, or even minimize the window. when we click on the red 'x' option, we get the ker-klunk error sound. The computer can't even shut down, due to the system preference still running. We can't even do the control/alt/escape either. We try to apple Q to quit... nothing. THis is the FIRST time this has happened. Any idea of how to solve this?
    Thanks!

    HI,
    Open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities)
Click the pop up menu on the right and select: All Processess
Select System Preferences then click the red Quit Process button, click Force Quit.
You should be able to shut down the Mac now.

  • Is there a way I can permanently disable the security lock thing in System Preferences?

Aside from logging and using the root account on a daily basis, is there a way to permanently be rid of the security lock thing in System Preferences?
Yosemite has a bug (?) where if an Admin account has its password set to blank (empty), you can't remove the security lock...
You can click it, it'll ask for Username and Password (Why?), and when you click on 'Unlock', it unlocks for a brief moment and instantly locks itself again...
This is beyond infuriating. Do advise.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  However I'm quite aware that the sleep/wake button disables the screen.  Unfortunately, mea maxima culpa, I sometimes accidentally hit shuttle before I've pressed the sleep/wake button, often when I am trying to do more than one thing at once.  Sometimes I accidentally hit shuffle at other times too,eg when waking up the phone.
This is especially exasperating when listening to classical pieces with multiple movements.  I will look for an alternative music player for the iphone, as I don't think the default music application and I are a good match.
    Thanks again,

  • In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. How I can disable it?

Hello, In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. All is locked. How I can disable it?

Do you mean the check box isn't enabled?
Or you remove the check but it doesn't "stick"?
Or you remove the box but documents are stil getting locked?
That setting doesn't apply to other things in System Preferences, just apps that support AutoSave and Versions.  If you're having a problem with System Prefs, please clarify exactly what.

  • "Appletalk disabled in system preferences" but it is?

Hello all: I have used a networkable Xerox 5400 with my tibook running system 10.2.8 for a while, but have been inactive on it for awhile too. I am getting a message "Appletalk disabled in system preferences" but I go into system prefs, make sure appletalk is enabled in the built-in ethernet tab, and am still getting this message. I have re-booted both the mac and the printer multiple times, have created new locations, have tested my ethernet connections with other devices (a router)with no luck. Am able to print with another mac with the same settings. Any suggestions? TIA

    Hi Murman,
I noticed someone else had a similar problem to your error message "Appletalk disabled in system preferences" and their problem was solved.

  • AppleTalk disabled in System Preferences

I have been computing and printing successfully for a long time. I connect my G3, running OS 10..3.9, with my Apple Select 360 through an Asanté Talk box. But now, returning after ten days absence, I can't print. I am getting the error message: "AppleTalk is disabled in System Preferences"
In System Prefs/Network: no enabler for AppleTalk is to be found.
I have tried Directory Access Utility: Appletalk is "enabled"
I've tried the trick of unplugging the Asanté for a minute, then reconnecting.
    Big Mystery. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Jim,
You didn't give all the detail I need, so I am making assumptions here. Just tell me if I'm wrong. I guess you are printing via direct ethernet connection from laptop to Asante box?
OS X doesn't consider ethernet to be ON until it has a valid IP address. Go to Network Prefs > Show built-in ethernet > TCP/IP tab. Set Configure manually and enter a local IP address (example 192.168.5.5). (An IP address of 169.x.x.x means self-assigned and isn't valid) Now go to the appletalk Tab and turn on appletalk.
Now Add the printer. (You may also have to power Off/On the printer and Asante to get them rcognized by the computer.)

  • Disable User Access to Accessibility Pane in System Preferences

    Hello Everyone,
What I want to do is have a user account which does not have administrator access have access to the System Preferences App but not access to certain functions. Things I want to disable are Accessibility, App Store, Dictation and Speech, Keyboard, Parental Controls, Secuirty and Privacy, and Users and Groups. The reason for this is that this is something I am trying to get setup for as a new design for the user allowances to assist with some issues that have been reported by teachers for sets of student laptops. As a note they need to be able to access things like the Printers and Network menus because these are laptops which are assigned to the students. They will go home with them so they need to be able to have access to change the settings for networks and add printers.
For some background of changes to the system that I have made. I have given access to the students using Directory Utility so they can edit the print settings without having to use an Admin password by updating the groups settings and adding them to the Pritner Admin's group manually. I am planning on blocking access to certain programs like Terminal because the students are using it to force the laptops to "talk" in class which they think is funny but the teachers are finding it disruptive and have asked that I disable this for them. I also am using Netinstall to mass deploy the image that I am making because I need to deploy this to around 100 devices.
I look forward to any suggestions everyone may have for this.

    Hello Baltwo,
I usually post over in the education section when I am posting questions. This is more a question of how do I modify what is available in the system preferences pane than related to me doing a mass deployment. I put those notes in because usually people start off with comments like disable system preferences or why would you want to block access. What I really need is OS specific rather than mass deployment. The search system also loves to look in the iPad forums and just reports back thinks like how to turn the settings back off once they have been turned on. As it stands I do disable the keyboard shortcuts but that does not keep the students out of the pane sadly.
Thanks for the ideas though. If I cannot get an answer here I will try over there next.

  • How Do I Disable .Mac in System Preferences?

Is there some way to disable or lock .Mac in system preferences? I need to prevent users from moving data from Mac to .Mac account.

If I had sensitive data on a Mac and I needed to account for it's use and location, .Mac provides an opportunity for movement of data without authorization. I need to be able to restrict .Mac use or disable it completely for each user on a single system.

  • HT4628 How can I delete a network from my system preferences? My wifi keeps trying to connect to a network that has been disable.

We have disabled an old network in our home and installed a new one. My computer keeps finding the old network, but I have no connection as it is disabled. I have set the new network as my priority, but it doesn't seem to be working. I would like to delete the old network, but can't find how to do it.

Try going to system preferences/network. Unlock the padlock if locked with your admin paswd.
Click on Locations, at the bottom of the drop down menu select Edit locations, this should bring up the list of networks, highlight the one you wish to delete and click the minus button, it should disappear. Click done.
    Hope this helps
