System Preference Help File?
I noticed that when I am in the System Preferences, and open the help menu, there is nothing there. I get an empty help pane. Typing in a question gets the spinning beachball.
This is the case for both my MacBook and MacPro.
Did I do something to both of these computers, or is this a common problem?
Or is it a problem at all?
I did not see anything in the forum on this.
Thanks,
Russ
I finally stumbled upon the answer.

Move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder?
How do I move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder. I unintentionally moved it. My Mac blocks putting it back. Suggestions? Thanks!
Somehow I managed to delete my System Preferences shortly after upgrading, and was able to use the 10.4 one for a while until I applied the patch. Luckily, I already had Pacifist, and with your directions I was able to get close enough so that I could find the Applications folder within the ContentsofEssentialsSystemSoftwareGroup > ContentsofEssentials.pkg > Applications > SystemPreferences.app.
For that, I owe you the deepest gratitude and a gigantic THANK YOU. My System Preferences is now fully reinstalled and working wonderfully.
Pacifist might actually be worth purchasing. -
Hope someone can help
I am using 10.5.8 on my mac book pro currently.
My Desktop and Screensaver tab under System Preferences is gone, just totally missing.
I am stuck with a generic blue back round that I cant change.
I tried creating new admin account and logging in but the problem still persists. ***? any ideas what I am supposed to do?First, try the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't help then do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Undeleting "System Preferences" Help!!
Awhile ago, my "System preferences" option just wouldn't open, no matter how many restarts, it would do nothing after being opened or clicked on.
So in a stroke of genious I deleted it. Now, obviously, I have no option for "System preferences" at all. How do I go about re-installing the program, and can i do it from a OSX Panther upgrade disk?heddo:
I have no idea if it can be done. You may need to back up and Archive and Install.
However, in the off chance that it can, you can try Pacifist to see if you can extract it from your Panther disks.
Good luck.

Restoring backup files from Time Machine without system preference/Library files
Hi all. I recently ran into some trouble with my MBP and had the Apple store do a erase/install for me. At the time when I got my laptop back, I was told it would be best if I transferred my files including applications the drag and drop way to avoid restoring library/system files that could've been the cause of the problem in the first place. I'm currently still at the setup assistant stage and I'm really unsure of what to do to be honest because I'm under the impression that my application settings would pretty much be gone if I did the drag and drop method.
I read that setup assistant transfers only files that you want but I also read something from user Pondini that the Library files are automatically restored even if I unchecked everything. Which is problematic since that's what I want to avoid in the first place. If possible can anyone recommend a better option for my dilemma? I've read in one of the forum boards that dragging and dropping files can also cause some problems with how applications will work and I really don't want to have to deal with that after the trouble I'm going through with this. Is there a way to just restore Applications and the user folder (desktop, documents, downloads, etc) without including the library system files and folders through setup assistant?
Or do I really have to deal with dragging and dropping files instead? Would you recommend doing the stars wars method of Time Machine and picking only the files I want? Would that be most advisable?
Also, it would be really helpful if anyone can explain to me what the "other files and folders" mean exactly. Thanks very much!Well what happened was my laptop ran into 2 kernel panics within 2 days (I posted a question here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25605663#25605663). Which sent ME into a panic. I couldn't trust myself to go any further so I went to the Apple store who then helped did an erase/install for me because they suspect it could be a software issue (maybe it was missing codes or something) and suggested that it would be best for me to drag/drop restore my stuff manually. I'm not very keen on a full system restore either because I know there are some system files which I'd rather not have sticking around (like com.rims which are super stubborn to get rid of) and which could even have been the source of my trouble right now.
I was reading through every single page of Pondini's articles and I'm couldn't find anything which said I could just restore the apps in my apps folder without transferring anything else (ie. the library folder in the macintosh hd folder) since i'm assuming anything from the library folder of the user would be obsolete if I choose not to restore those files using setup assistant. But I'm more reluctant about not using setup assistant for restoring my apps because I don't know how bad it will turn out. Not to mention I won't know if they would restore system root files that should've been long gone since I uninstalled them. -
Strange System Preferences / Sharing / File Sharing problem...
I got this problem on an otherwise perfectly running iMac used for media production:
I can't add a share. The box is blank, and when I try to add a drive it does not take. If I try again, I get a boatload of these warnings in console and then the machine freezes, time for a ctrlcmdeject.
Last weekend when the machine had some downtime, I cloned the internal drive, wiped it, and reinstalled SL. Problem solved...sortof. I am now back on the original image as the machine is not free for the days it will take to do a reinstall of the OS AND all the apps.
Do you think there is anything else I could try? I've hit all the usual suspects: permissions, disk warrior, etc. There must be some sudo command for this:)

He fixed global sharing by having the system recreate some system-level plists. But there is still this one bug, that I can ignore by just never using the system pref pane to add shares:) However, if anyone has another idea, feel free to append.

When I go under System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Options there is an account listed called "Calender Server" that is checked. When I try to uncheck it, it asks for a password to turn it off and I don't know the password. How do I either turn this off or get rid of it?
Better still, try Apple - Support - Discussions - Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard.

I installed bootcamp but became a pain to use so I unistalled it. Now every time I turn my Macbook pro on it keeps asking me what startup disk to use. I tried using the system preferences to correct this but it hasn't worked. I even restored my mac back to factory settings but it still asks me what startup disk to use. I have looked everywhere for a solution but one anywhere
Delete the System Preference .plist file (preference file) and when rebooting and #2 Reset the PRAM
Deleting the System Preference or other .plist file
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the OS X volume to boot from. -
File Sharing Missing from Sharing in System Preferences
I had file sharing working, and today I can no longer connect from a windows PC. When I go to System Preferences, Sharing, File Sharing is missing in the list. The only options are the following:
DVD or CD SHaring
Screen Sharing
Remote Login
Remote Management
Remote Apple Events
Bluetooth Sharing
Not 100% sure when it stopped working, but I think the last change was upgrading to VMware Fusion v2.0.5 fron 2.0.*, and I upgraded to 4GB of RAM. Also I noticed my hostname had changed with a 2 at the end (HOSTNAME 2). Not sure when that happened, but thought it could be relevant. Any ideas? It is strange - it almost seems like your machine has two copies of your OS, one with the normal hostname, and one with the hostname with a 2. I can't imagine something like that happening, unless the VMWare somehow imported your Mac OS - or that a backup copy of the Mac OS was installed on a separate partition on your Mac, and somehow you're logging into that 2nd copy without realizing it. (Twilight Zone music here!)
Does your Mac otherwise boot up normally? Have you tried using the disk utility to do a disk check (and see if some ghost partition shows up)? Or, have you already done the dreaded re-install? -
Desktop & Screen Saver pane won't open in System Preferences
Whenever I go to open the Desktop & Screen Saver pane in System Preferences, it won't work and I get the message "Preferences Error: Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane." Please help. Thank you very much.
This thread sounds pretty much the same as yours.....

The only thing I can think of might be a corrupted System Preferences .plist file
Home folder > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist > drag that .plist to the desktop and try System Preferences again.....
A new plist file will be created when you open System Preferences again.... -
My system preferences keeps crashing before it will even open.
My system preferences keeps crashing before it will even open. It will not open in safe mode. There is no system preferences .plist file on my system. Do I need to reinstall ML?
Hope I followed the instructions properly.... Thanks Linc and CT!

System Preferences Sound is Automatically Muting Without User Input
I have just recently upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) via archive and install. Everything has seemed to be working fine except I am having a problem that is driving me crazy! Almost constantly, my system preferences shows me that my sound is being muted without me doing anything. When this happens, the sound icon, showing that my sound is off and then back on, keeps appearing on my screen.
Here are the things I've tried to do to correct this problem. I've tried a different mouse, different keyboard (I am using the new, aluminum keyboard), disconnecting all sound input devices, etc. I tried trashing the system preferences plist file too to no avail.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! The same thing has happened to me repeatedly! It started last week--I've have Leopard since it first came out. It is annoying. I've tried several different forums and no answer. I've screened this discussion board and there have been no reply for sound issues. People who have brought their Mac's to Apple stores don't get answers either. I hope someone figures this one out soon! I'll be watching and waiting.

I did something in an update to my computer, and i think i deleted a bunch of files. I had to go to another computer to get Safari back on my computer, and now ive lost all my system preferences. i have no way to update anything on my computer. How can i download this portion of my system preferences so that i can again have control over my computer. any help is greatly appreciated.
As this is the Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8 forum I assume that is what you are running. You reinstall from the original install disk. Snow Leopard has never been available as a download.

Hello everyone.
i have a 15" MBA circa 2011 running Lion 10.7.5 and my sound has gone, There is a no sound circle on my volume display and in system preferences sound my options for output is empty. At the same time this happened I noticed 2 things: 1) itunes would not actually play any audio track and every video i streamed stopped after a few seconds (usually 11s) but not always.
I have tried following some tips I have found online like going into MIDI and fixing the problem there, restarting in safe mode. Resetting with PRAM (or something that sounds like that).
Does anyone have any insight on this? At this point i'm thinking it's time to reload Lion but I don't really know how to go about that without losing all of my files.
Please Help
