System Preference icons corrupted after 10.4.7?

Following installation of 10.4.7, there's prpblems with the graphic card: some icons, particularly in System Preferences, disappear or appear completely garbled.
Has anyone the same issue and found a fix?
Thank you!

Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) may resolve certain issues. It can’t hurt so perhaps it’s worth a shot.

  • Internet Accounts Preference pane corrupted after 10.9.5 update

After loading the 10.9.5 update I noticed that my Internet Accounts preferences pane in System Preferences is corrupted. The pane shows mostly blank, but will show graphic corruption if I move the window around. It has the list of accounts even though you cannot see them. If I click on the first account location my iCloud account shows up on the right. The list under it doesn't show, but it is also present. I have gone through and trashed a few plist files that look related. I tried most of the items related to problems in this area, but I have been unable to figure out what is causing this anomaly. The only other problem I have that is related is that if I try to create a new Mail account, the account type picker has the last item with a radio button, but no graphic. If I select it, it shows an example AOL address, but the rest of the text is not correct.
This is the add account pane in mail. I assume that last one is supposed to be AOL.
This is the pane that shows up when selecting the blank entry. It sort of looks like a foreign language without the right font.
I am going to try re-loading the combo pack upgrade for Mavericks to see if that can correct this. Any ideas are appreciated. Did 10.9.5 pull out the AOL option and just not do it right on my system?
Just found a related issue. Add Account in Contacts (need to add a directory account) doesn't do anything. I had a directory account during the upgrade, but removed all accounts and re-added all back except that one since I cannot.
    Thanks

I did the Safe Boot again and had the problem. I still have the problem after rebooting into normal mode. Looks like there is an uncaught exception when I select to add an account in the address book. There are similar uncaught exceptions when I got into the internet accounts preference pane as well.

  • I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon

    hello all,
I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon and now I can't open it or my time capsule icon. I uninstalled a program and after that I started to experience this problem. Any idea what is going on and how I can solve the problem.
    Thanks in advance
    ACinLA

Check inside your Applications folder and see if you can find your System Preferences Application. If you can see there try and open it. If it works then drag it to the dock creating a new alias and remove the question mark. If you do not see System Preferences in the Applications folder then it may have been moved or even deleted. Try searching for it. If you find it move it back to the Applications folder.
    George

  • Strange System Preference Icons Display

Hi all - all of my System Preference icons except Spotlight and the CD and DVD, have changed into images of switches with the original images showing as tiny rectangles in the bottom left corner of each 'switch'. Fortunately they do all still work correctly.
I have not seen anything like this in all my many years of using Macs,
can anyone shed some light on what has happened, and how to rectify it?

Hi BDAqua - thanks for responding. That instruction you directed me to seems to be designed for more than I need to do, although I must confess it all looks very confusing to me! Do you know what part of it might apply to my problem?

One of my System Preferences icons seems to be missing... I have been trying to disable DVD player from automatically launching when I insert a DVD, and the "CDs &DVDs" icon is missing in the System Preferences.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Nick
    MacBook 1.83GHz Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Nick
    Hmmmm.
When you say it is missing... In Sys Pref. in the second row called hardware there are normally 6 icons with the CD-DVD one being the first on the far left position. Is that space now empty?
If is not empty and you click on the space where it should be, what happens?
I'm running out of ideas. So... one more time with one extra deletion.
    With Sys Pref closed
    trash
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    as well as
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systempreferences
then log out and then back in
then click on Sys Pref. to see if CD-DVD is back where it should be.
    regards roam.

Security and privacy system preference not working after Lion install.  Not sure if it happen with Lion installer or after updating. What to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Deleted System Preferences Icon

Ive accidently removed the link to System Preferences from my Dock and finder, i can still access it from the apple icon on the 'task bar' at the top of my screen.
However i want to get a link back to it on to my dock, and in finder. Do i have to create an 'alias'/''shortcut' and if so how and where do i do this from.
I know im a fool for deleting both but ive done it accidently over time
    Any help would be appreicated.

    12" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi again Jon,
You stated in your original post that you are able to fire up System Preferences from the Apple menu (top left of the menubar). If that's the case, do the following:
    1. Fire up System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. The System Preferences icon should now be in the dock as the dock displays all open applications/utilities.
    3. Click and hold on the System Preferences icon in the dock.
    4. In the menu that appears, scroll down and select Keep in Dock. That takes care of having System Preferences in the Dock issue.
    5. Click and hold again on the System Preferences icon.
    6. In the same menu that appears, scroll down and select Show In Finder
    7. In the Finder window that appears select column view, You should now be able to see exactly where System Preferences is located in your system. If it's not in your Applications folder, someone moved it. Simply click and drag it to your Applications folder.

Are you referring to the actual application in your Applications folder or the icon in the Dock? If the latter simply open your Applications folder, locate the System Preferences application and drag its icon into the Dock. If the former then you have to reinstall it from your OS X Installer DVD:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.

    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....

  • System preference icon question.

ok. im using an iMac G4. i had leopard on it but i didnt like how it was running so i reinstalled tiger. im on 10.4.11 now. i was just using quicktime and clicked on REGISTER and its supposed to bring up system preferences. well i noticed that the LEOPARD icon bounced and quit. so i manually clicked on the tiger system preference icon and registered. i wonder why when i tried to register through the quicktime app the leopard app bounced. anyway i can fix this?

It seems you still have parts of Leo installed, if you can't afford to erase it and do a Fresh Install of Tiger, then maybe try this...

  • System Preferences Icon renamed .de0115.0e8.  Also can't drag & drop

Thanks in advance for your help. For whatever reason, when I roll the mouse by my doc it displays the name of the program which corresponds with the icon. All of a sudden system preferences has been renamed: .de1150e8.
Also, I can no longer drag and drop more than 1 item.
I had to do an archive and reinstall after the update. My machine runs faster than it ever did so I'm happy with that--even the fans are quieter.
There have just been a few little quirks like the two mentioned above. It seems like there are an awful lot of kext and plist files in the system folder, particularly extensions. More so than I ever recall seeing before.

u need to check if the same issue happens in a new users by going to sys pref>accounts> create new user .
then u would need to login to that other account and check if the new users shows up the same way .
if not its a user related issue .
so u need to login back into that main account and remove the pref for system pref from HDD/users/username/lib/pref/system pref.plist .

  • Finder toolbar icons corrupted after upgrading to 10.5.5

    Hi,
After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.5 from 10.5.4, the icons of the Finder and Safari toolbars got somewhat mixed up. For example, the "Previous" button shows the bluetooth logo intead of an arrow pointing towards the left, the "Next" button shows a sort of portrait of a man in a frame, and the "Reload" button shows a muted speaker. This occurs everywhere those icons would usually appear in Mac OS X (e.g. also in the System Preference toolbar for the next and previous buttons, etc).
Would you know what caused this, and how I could restore the correct icons? Where are those icons stored on my machine?
    Thanks,
    Tibo.

I am having the exact same problem. Right now I am using Safari, and instead of the normal symbols for Back, Forward, Home, Autofill, Reload and Add Bookmark, I have what looks like bluetooth, contact, theatre, back, mute and a symbol of a megaphone.
The back and forward buttons in Finder look the same as they do in Safari. However, there are a few toolbar icons in Finder that look as they should, for example Quick View. I read somewhere about the folder /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app -> Ctrl-click and Show Package Contents -> Contents/Resources which contains what looks like some toolbar icons. However, it only contains some icons that I would expect to see, not the ones I am actually seeing.
And in my case too this happened when I updated to 10.5.5. The only odd things about my Mac that I can think of that might be related are:
    a) I have a PowerPC Mac (a G5, as it happens) and 10.5 "Leopard". This is an unusual combination.
    b) The 10.5.5 update did not work through Software Update and I had to download the standalone installer.
    c) I recently installed Virtual PC 7, which doesn't work 100% with Leopard.
I have recently run Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk, but I will run them again anyway. If I don't post an update saying that that fixed it, assume that it didn't.

  • System preference icons missing

    Hi
Since installing Lion, the icons on my system preferences pane have all changed to the same icon as the system preferences app. i.e just the cogs.
Can anyone tell me how this may have happened and how I can revert back to the standard images please? The selections are all there, but all showing the same cog image.
I have seen some previous discussions about removing the apple.com/preferencepanes cache but I dont have it in my Library.
    thanks!

It's not a folder, it should be a single file.
From your user account, go to the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ folder and see if the items in there have unique icons, or if they all look the same. If they do look the same then the problem may be with the launch services configuration in your system. The launch services is the configuration that pairs up files with their handler programs (ie, .txt files with TextEdit), so the system can open them properly when you open the file directly in the Finder.
To reset the launch services, open the Terminal utility (in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder) and run the following commands (the first one is long, so you might copy and paste it):
    cd /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/
    ./lsregister -kill
    ./lsregister -seed -all system,local,user
