System preference is stuck on desktop and screensavers

I tryed to have a look at the different apple screensavers and they worked fine and i changed it to the itunes artwork screensaver, there wasn't a problem until i went back to the desktop. When I did it crashed and i cannot open system preferences at all, i have started my macbook pro up in safe mode and that didn't help either. Please help

We are going to delete the System Preferences preference file.
1: Log in and go to the Finder menu called Go and select Go to Folder
2: Enter
/Library
and press Go. A window appears.
3: Scroll down until you see
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
there might be two files with the same name, drag the one that will move to the Trash can
4: Restart the machine under the Apple menu and log in, open System Preferences and reset your preferences, however avoid the iTunes Artwork screensaver at this time.
I don't what is wrong specifically, but deleting the System Preferences file may fix it, or it might be a problem with one of the artwork files in iTunes, perhaps it's corrupted.
This you will have to find out for yourself through a trial and error process.

  • "Connection failed" message after entering Desktop and Screensavers pref

Whenever I open System Preferences and click the Desktop and Screensavers preference pane, a message window pops up saying, "Connection failed. There was an error connecting to the server "iMacWife". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again."
I think my iMac is trying to connect to my wife's iMac, which used to contain all of the family photos. These photos now reside on my iMac. But I can't get rid of this message. I tried tossing the Desktop and Screensavers preferences, but it didn't work. I tried making a backup of the prefs folder and then deleting all the prefs inside the folder, and that actually worked. No error message. But when I copied back the prefs, making sure to NOT replace any of the newly created prefs (for finder, D&S, By Host), the connection failed message reappeared. So there's some other pref related to the Desktop and Screensavers pref pane that is looking for something on the wife's iMac and not finding it.
And ideas what this may be?
    Thanks!

I see this has not been answered yet. I have the same issue after getting rid of an old server--nothing should be connecting to it anymore, but I'm getting the same message when entering system preferences..Desktop and Screensavers. The only way to get rid of this message (until the next time) is to force quit system preferences.
Does ANYone have any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • Even after setting system preferences to Never accept cookies and having deleted all cookies, Safari continues to add cookies.  I've tried to reset safari but the problem persists.  How can make safari Never accept cookies.

I'm having a problem with cookies on Safari.
Even after setting system preferences to Never accept cookies and having deleted all cookies, Safari continues to add cookies.  I've tried to Reseting Safari several time but the problem persists.  This is occurring under two different user logins one of whom is an administrator the other a standard user.  How can I get safari to Never accept cookies?  This is a recent problem because in the past it used to work properly. Any idea what might be going on here?

    Hi David:
I did read (yesterday in another thread) about a similar problem.  I cannot test it myself as I accept cookies (from sites I visit) and do not want to delete all of mine for a test.
I do not know whether it meets your requirements, but you could turn on private browsing.  I use that (or Microsoft's variant on IE) when I use public computers.

  • System preferences is stuck!!!HELP

So I open up my sytem preferences to change my desktop wallpaper but it just stays stuck on "loading images". It has never done this before. So I force quit it and open up system preferences again but it just goes back to the same window. It doesn;t even show me all of the other things like network, printer etc etc. It just opens to this..
I know its blurry but this is what pops up everytime I click on system preferences. It doesn't go away even after rebooting the computer. As you can see it just says "loading images. It stays frozen on this. I cant go back and or click anything. PLEASE HELP

Open Finder, select Go > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.systempreferences.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist

  • System Preferences  (Network) - stuck error message

As soon as I open the Network window in System Preferences I get an error window:
"Your network settings have been changed by another application. <OK> "
Clicking OK causes a repeat of the message. I have to use the utility Activity Monitor to kill the System Pref's process to get rid of it.
However, this doesn't allow me to change (or get any!) my internet access, so I'm really stuck.
How do I "reset" this condition back to normal? Suggestions?
(This bug may be related to the secuity update which I just installed. The machine ran fine after the first re-boot after the install, but this problem arose on the second re-boot.)
MANY THANK for ANY help (I'm desparate!)

Sig's solution was spot on, thanks Sig, I had the same problem. But also, for the benefit of anyone encountering a similar problem but wanting to access their network settings urgently before following Sig's advice to clear up the problem, when you click OK on the message window, immediately click on one of the 'Show …' networks behind the message. Then when the message next appears and you click on the OK again, immediately go to click 'Options' at bottom left and the Network settings will all be available to you - until you close the Network window and then you have to start all over again. You have to get your timing right with the clicking and move pretty fast - but it does work.

  • HT201250 i was trying to manually erase files from my macbook air. at one point, my system preferences disappeared from the dock and i had a pop up message telling me the application was 'incomplete'. I tried to reinstall iLife but i wont work.

I used the small key that comes with the air but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Am i supposed to be reinstalling OS X or iLife? I tried OS X and I didn't see much difference except for the return of my system preferences and safari which had initially disappeared, but I'm still missing the App Store and iPhoto. I can't reinstall iLife either.

Try a few things: 1) restart in safe mode (restart holding the shift key) and this will repair the drive (if need be) and trim/delete cache files. Restart normally.
    2) if you use iPhoto or Aperture launch the program and then empty the trash folder of the program(s).  Launch your Mail program and check out how much is in the Trash and Archive folders. You can delete the really old stuff if there is any.
    3) Download omniDiskSweeper (free) to see what's on your drive. Be careful about deleting anything that isn't in your personal drive space and be very careful about deleting anything in the Library folder.

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

  • Preferences problem ... desktop and screensaver function missing

The desktop and screensaver function in my preferences has disappeared, not to be found at all on my computer.  I saw this problem posted with the response to download Pacifist.  I did that but cannot figure out how that would help, so I still have the problem.  Any recommendations?

Have you tried repairing disk permissions for the screensaver issue?
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help... try the 10.5.7 combo update available here. http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.

  • System Preferences can't set date and time and other odd behaviour

I have a 2008 Macbook Air, which is beginning to show signs of age, but now appears to have taken on a terminal problem.  I can't set the date and time in the system preferences, even when connected to the internet - the pane just comes up as faded out and I am unable to do anything. The problem started after I accidentally allowed the battery to run down without having shut down the computer and it automatically assumed a date of 1 Jan 2001. I am unable to perform any updates on the machine until the issue is resolved, according to software update.
Other strange things that have happened are that the trackpad no longer responds to the 'tap to click' function or 'two finger' click. In system preferences, I cannot edit energy saver, network (advanced) or account settings - attempting to do so brings up more faded panels or an error message after failure to load.
Has anyone seen similiar behaviour on their mac or have suggestions as how I might resolve the problem?
    Thanks!

If this is recent, what has changed since the last time D&T worked correctly?
I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " Using iPhone " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • System preferences always wants to close and reopen

Whenever I open system preferences, and click on any icon, I get a window that says " to use (whichever icon I chose) system preferences must close and reopen". If I click OK, the reopened preferences window will then work fine. This happens every time I try to use preferences, or even use preferences for some applications. It is distressing me a bit, as I am worried that I have some virus.

This is not due to a virus, or any other kind of malware. The following may provide your solution:

  • My system preferences is fuzzy on desktop

We have been having problems with speed, internet connections etc.  However, I believe the culprit is on our desktop, in the form of a fuzzy System Preferences icon.  The rest of the icons are razor sharp.  What does this mean?  Should I reinstall the Mac OS?  We are running 10.6.7.

There might be a corrupt file somewhere such as the System Preferences plist.  But before you mess around with this, is your data backed up?
