System Preference Isn't What It Says It Is
I hope someone can help me (using simple step by steps, please - I'm new here!). I have a folder of pictures for my desktop. This folder is in the picture folder. The pictures are supposed to change every 5 minutes, which they do. They are supposed to be "stretch to fill screen". They are not stretched. They used to be. Suddenly, for no reason, it says they're stretched, but they obviously are not. In fact, I can hit "tile', "center" or "stretch", and the picture remains "fill screen", although it will say it is whichever other way I picked. This started a couple months ago, for no reason I can think of. I throw out the desktop preferences about every day. I run Disk Utility almost as often. I always restart after software updates and downloads. I went to the Apple Store, and asked a Genius there. He said he had no idea why this was happening. He suggested we bring the computer in. eMacs are heavy, very heavy, Bringing it in is not an option we want to use. Thanks to anyone who is more "geniuser", and can help!
Hi Read1, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Just to eliminate several questions/problems, lets do these steps...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<12digitHex Number>.plist
reboot when it finishes. Set yuur prefs again.

Bluetooth is neither detected nor working. In the system preferences under BLUETOOTH header it says "No information found". Bluetooth icon is not appearing on desktop either. Please help.
Yes....It happens all the time. I also erased my HD and installed Snow Leopard but with no success. Tried lots of REBOOTING but nothing worked for me.As I have already installed the new OSX I think there is no need to go through the below procedure. What do you suggest?
Before you go through the ritual of reinstalling the entire system just try to do a "factory reset" of your bluetooth environment. To do this you need to run the Bluetooth Explorer which is a utility installed as part of XCode.
1. Launch Bluetooth Explorer.
2. Select the "Modify Software & Device Configuration" from the Utilities menu.
3. Keep the first 4 checkboxes checked (one will say "Full factory reset").
4. Click "Perform actions" button (lower right of window).
5. Reboot (possibly the Reboot NOW button will work, if not just do a normal reboot).
Hopefully that will clear your problem(s) so you can re-pair your bluetooth devices.
Good luck. -

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

"Avast" is the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it may send personal data (such as web browsing history and the contents of email messages) back to the developer without your knowledge, give false warnings, destabilize and slow down the computer, expose you to network attack, and corrupt the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage.
Some versions of the product also inject advertising into web pages. In short, apart from the fine print in the license agreement, Avast is indistinguishable from malware, and is arguably worse than any known malware now in circulation.
Back up all data, then remove Avast according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above. -
My system preferences isn't responding #PleaseRespond.
so when i was changing my desktop wallpaper it just froze on me, i get the beachball and i have let it load but nothing is happening. this happens every time i open up my system preferences. i have tried to see if it happens only when i try to change my background but when i try to open up my setting for my bluetooth devices the settings pop up in the system preferences but still happens to keep freezing no matter what settings i try to change.
so can somebody tell me what can fix this? i jus bought this mac mini about a month ago and this is happening to me.
is there anybody that had this issue and was able to fix it?
#PleaseRespondjust move the folder you were using to get the pictures from to change your background and restart and put them back in. i recommend putting a seperate folders meant for background so this wont happen again. Thanks guys.

System Preferences opens to a blank, white window
I erased my drive when I set up a Dual 2.7GHz G5 tower for sale, and installed Leopard. Updated to 10.5.4. Then found that when I open System Preferences, I get a blank white window. I can go to the dock item and click to select a particular tab, but it only changes the window size. It is still all white.
The menu bar items also display only white. Any ideas??? I'm stumped. Also sold the G5, so must get it fixed ASAP.I don't know if this will help: it used to work well in 10.3 and earlier, and quite often in 10.4.
Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. Trash com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache as well if you have it.
If this alone doesn't fix things after a logout/login, then trash them again (because it will have regenerated more bad files), together with com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Home > Library > Preferences folder, and in the Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxx = a hexadecimal numeric string.
You need to log out and log back in again for this to have any effect (or restart if you prefer).
If none of this helps, you will need to look in your log files to find out why your preference panes are not opening: the simplest way to do this is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "Console Messages" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom tool to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar (preferably in another window). Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log. -
What's up? I am trying to connect a new PC onto the same livebox that my mac is using. Unsuccessfully. Now, when on my MacBook I click 'network' on system preferences, I get a flap saying 'your network settings have been changed by another application'. I click the OK but the message will not go away. It prevents me from accessing my network page. The only way to get rid of it is to 'force quit' system preferences. Did the new computer do this? Annoying, especially as the new PC will not connect onto internet. It replaces an old one that already was on the same livebox.
Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!

Force quit systems preferences dialog box
Please help. Yesterday a "friend" tried to set up a wireless connection to a printer from my laptop. Since he does not know Macs, I asked him to stop his tinkering which he did. Now, a dialog box comes up that says: "Another application has changed your network settings" Upon cliking the OK button, the box remains - it does not close until I force quit. This prevents me from even getting into the system preferences to check what has been changed. How can I circumvent this dialog box? All else seems to be working fine; I can still connect to the internet using wireless.
Thanks for any advice you can give. This is a common bug after the Oct 2008 security update. It appears you can try several things, as mentioned in Macintouch Reader Reports Oct 27 and later:
http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/security/topic4307.html
and go to Oct 27, 2008 and read several subsequent entries.
To recap:
-Try the latest security update.
-You might be able to dismiss the dialog by clicking at exactly the right moment.
-Or, upon a restart, go to system prefs/security and check, "Require password to unlock each secure system preference"
-you can delete several network and location preference files, but then you have to recreate them all manually.
and there are more suggestions that I haven't tried. I deleted preferences and had to manually reenter location data, which was a hassle. -
System preferences wants to use confidential information stored in my keychain
Images are not being displayed in emails on my Mac. This includes sending photos from iphoto via email. When going in to System Preferences to see what I need to check, I get the window which reads "System Preferences wants to use your confidential information stored in "imap.aol.com" in your keychain. Should I "always allow", "deny" or "allow"?
I recently synched my contacts via icloud with my mac and my iphone (which created a whole different problem). That is the only thing I can think of that I have done recently (?). Speaking of the contacts issue, now my phone does not have the phone numbers and all of the information of my contacts as I had on my phone before the icloud synch. Now, the contacts in my phone seem to be mostly email addresses that were stored on my mac and no phone numbers!!! WT? Help. My love for Apple is waning.I too am losing confidence in Apple. I want to be able to make these choices and still have access to my apps.

Many of my System preferences won't load in mavericks?
Since updating to 10.9 many of my system preferences won´t load. These are:
- Security: You can’t open Security & Privacy preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.
- Notifications: Could not load Notifications preference pane.
- Printers & Scanners: Could not load Printers & Scanners preference pane.
- iCloud: Could not load iCloud preference pane.
- Internet accounts: Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane.
- Networks: Could not load Network preference pane.
- Sharing: You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.
- Users & Groups: You can’t open Users & Groups preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.
- Parental Controls: Could not load Parental Controls preference pane.
- Date & Time: You can’t open Date & Time preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.
Any hints on a solution are greatly appreciated!
Best regards, MikkelTo further explain:
I didn't need to locate any invisible files in my case. I discovered that I had 4 versions of the System Preferences application on my computer. (The System Preference applicatioin is what loads the preference pains when you seledt System Preferences.) I merely searched for "System Preferences" in spotlight. Spotlight located 4 different versions of the System Preferences application. Some of those versions apparently tied to preference panes that used the old 32 bit encoding from the non Intel processor days. When I clicked on the System Preferences under the Apple menue it was apparently pulling up an old version of the System Preferences applicatioin instead of the correct one in the main Applications folder. I also noted that if I clicked on System Preferernces in the dock or directly in the the Applications folder, I would not have the problem of some of the preference panes not able to be viewed because of the " "it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac" message. So I surmised that the correct System Preferences application was in the Applications Folder on the top level of the drive directory like it was supposed to be but that when I clicked on System Preferences from the Apple menue it was loading one of the 3 old System Preferences applications that were buried elsewhere on my hard drive. If you find you have more than one System Preferences application on your hard drive you need to trash the other System Preferences Applications. Before trashing the duplicates, you should test the one in the main Applications folder by directly double clicking it and make sure all the preference panes in it work properly then trash the duplicate System Preferences applications you found in spotlight.
You may also find like I did, that you not only have duplicates of the System Preferences on your hard drive but also several old duplicates of the entire Applications folder buried on your hard drive. if that is the case you should compare each folder and make sure there is nothing in the old duplicate Applications folders you still need. You will probably find that all of the latest versions of your applications are in the main Applications folder where they should be. If so then trash all the old duplicate Applications folders as well. Keep only the main Applications folder on the top level of the hard drive.
Trashing all these extra old Applications folders that held old duplicates of all my applications in them on my hard drive solved a bunch of other problems I was having with some of the applications as well.
For the technically minded: Why does this happen with Mavericks and not with Mountain Lion? I suspect that the old Applications folders and old duplicate System Sreferences applications didn't matter to Mountain Lion because it searched for the System Preference application under the Apple menu differently than Mavericks does. I believe Mountain Lion seached all the top levels of the Application folder before drilling down into any subfolders to find the System Preferences application. Mavericks apparently does it the opposite way. It searches the first subfolder in you Applications folder and drills all the way down in that subfolder first before going to the next subfolder and drilling down in that subfolder all the way to the bottom. So it searches all the subfolders before searching the main level of the Applications folder for System Preferences. Since my old duplicate System Preferences applications where in subfolders with titles that were earlier in the alphabet than the main System Preferences application it searched those subfolders first, found the old System Preferences application in the those earlier folders and loaded the old System Preferences first in the subfolders instead of the correct one further on in the main Applications folder. If any one else has a better idea let me know.

System preferences, sharing, remote management?
Hello,
Could someone tell me where I can find more information of how to use remote management that is under system preferences, sharing. What is the difference between screen sharing and remote management? It will be a great help as I am learning my way round my mybook and this feature would be of great help.
Thanks!Hi Allan,
Open System Preferences (Applications folder) and click the Sharing icon. Very bottom right of that window click the ? mark. That will prompt the Help Viewer for the Sharing preferences. You can type in keywords at the top of that window in the search field. Example: Remote Management
Mac OS X: About File Sharing

Quicktime program to show up in my system preferences?
I just bought the new Quicktime Pro application- for $30.
I have been sitting here for over an hour and Cannot find out how to download it. The "downloading steps" first instruct me to go to my APPLE ICON, Select SYSTEM PREFERENCES, and then select the QUICKTIME icon....
But I can't find the Quicktime Icon. It's not there. Yes, I already have the Quicktime 7 application. So WHY won't it show up in my System Preferences?! What am I doing wrong? That's good advise, but the Quicktime Player 7 is not in the Utlilities folder. (I clicked on "Finder", then "Go" on the Menu bar, and then clicked "Utilities". It's not there.)
I just spoke with an Apple Representative and he said to go into an Apple Retail store and get them to help me upload Quicktime from Snow Leopard -or whatever operating system my commuter is on... for some reason, it's just not there in my Utilities. Very, very frustrating.
But these things should be expected when a costumer like me doesn't know everything about Macs. I'm sure this would be a very easy issue to deal with for a computer expert. I feel pretty silly asking for help. -
Why can't I reset System Preferences?
I want to change my screensaver and I can't open "System Preferences" -- I get the error message that System Preferences isn't available on this Mac?
Reinstall the unmentioned OS and try again.

HT201317 Why is iCloud not in my system preferences?
Trying to set up Photo Stream on my MacBook, it's an older model but running Snow Leopard, and I don't have iCloud in my system preferences. Wondering what's up...
Nothing's up.
iCloud requires Mac OS X 10.7.2 or later. It's not supposed to be in System Preferences in Snow Leopard. -
