System Preference Temporary Freeze
On attempting to open "sharing" in system preferences the first click did not open, the second click brought the spinning ball of death and after about 20 seconds, opened.
I found I had lost sharing. Clicked on "start", got the ball of death. After 20 seconds or so, no reslut. Clicked on the file sharing box, got the ball of death. after 20 seconds or so, no reslut. Clicked on "start', got message "starting", but it never did start after a very long wait. I tried this sequence a number of times with the same results. I eventually did a restart and the problem went away.
Have you experienced this? If so, do you know what the problem was. Should I be concerned, although it has not happened again since the restart a day ago?
Thnks!
Generally that would be caused by the computer attempting to negotiate with some device on the network and the device either not responding, or taking a long time to respond. Perhaps the network was not up, not set up properly for what you were trying to do, port not opened, or possibly about 1,000 other things.
hard to say really without knowing more about your setup, but that is probably the direction you would want to investigate. When in doubt reboot, reboot, reboot.

Are you saying that your hard drive has problems that Disk Utility is unable to repair? If that is the case, you have directory problems which is why you have other problems. You can try a stronger utility like Disk Warrior and see if it will repair your drive. I think System Preferences is not working because your hard drive has directory problems.
It's also possible that the disk cannot be repaired because it is failing physically. I assume that Disk Utility shows SMART as verified. However, it might be worth getting a second opinion by downloading SMART Utility:
http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It seems to be somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner. If the drive is failing physically, you will have to replace it. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior can only repair the complex software on the drive--they cannot repair it physically.
Good luck! -
How do I stop the System Preferences from freezing on my Macbook Pro?
The System Preferences option on my MacBook Pro keeps freezing. Whenever I click on it is immediately freezes and shoes the rainbow wheel to show it is busy. I am currently running OS X 10.7.2. Can anyone please help?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
Sharing in System Preference keeps freezing
Hi there,
This is my first ever thread. I'm having some issues with System Preference for Sharing panel. Everytime I enter into it, the pane freezes and can't select/deselect any items. I've even gone to the trouble of Restoring the whole OS Mountain Lion. I can't close or go back, instead I have to quite the System Preference.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Every time I open system preferences, it freezes and I have to force quit.
Everytime I open my system preferences to do, or change, anything it freezes and I a have to force quit, I have tried deleting .plist files and restarting and its still reoccuring.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.
You can add that information to your Apple Support Communities profile. At the top of any ASC window click Your Stuff > Profile > Edit. You must be signed into to do this. -
My Menu Bar has gone + Date and Time causes System Preferences to freeze
Hi my ibook has recently lost its menu bar, I have had a search around the forum to see if i can find the answer but i cant. If you reselect items from system preferences such as bluetooth display etc. nothing appears in the menu bar. If i go to the time and date menu just opening it causes sytem prefs to stop responding and you can only force quit out of it. Are the two things related?
I tryed to remove the com.apple.systemmenu file as one of the post on here said to do, but alas nothing. is it gone for ever?
Will i have to reinstall os-x
Many thanks in advance
olly boustead - UKcould this be involved? or does the mac not even get time to place the icon before it freezes.
Yes, it might. I thought I had reproduced this, since I also got "Click the lock to make changes" with no icon, but after a short delay the "open lock" icon appeared and the text changed to "Click the lock to prevent further changes". So maybe this shows there is a problem with the icon file. More on this later.
is this another factor?
Does your login password still work as the keychain password? If so, start Keychain access and choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu.
I doubt this will affect the lock icon, but let us know if the keychain password problem goes away first, then we can look at the other problem. -
System Preferences/ Desktop Freezes
Lately every time I open my system preferences and try to change my desktop or screen saver, it does one of two things:
1. It 'unexpectedly quits' after a few seconds of being frozen, or
2. It freezes and just stays frozen until I force quit it.
I don't have many pictures, at least not enough to freeze it, I think. Help would be appreciated ~Welcome to Apple Discussions, linnea.
Quit System Preferences and delete these files:
Delete these files or folders then relaunch System Preferences.
Users/Home/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Users/Home/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
and com.apple.PrefPane.Network.xxx.plist (the X's will be numbers)

How do I stop system preferences from freezing up?
Ever since I installed an 8GB ram into my iMac (early '09) I have been having trouble with system preferences. It appears to be frozen on the desktop picutre screen and the loading wheel just continues to spin to no avail. I always end up having to force quit the process.
This is really bothering me so if anyone can help I will be grateful.
PS I am using OS X Lion, if that helps...Ok, I guess. I think just logging out and back in would be sufficient in that case.
FWIW, FYI, com.apple.systempreferences.plist is there. Just opening system prefes would recreate it if it wasn't there which is why I originally suggested removing it to get a fresh copy created. You must not have looked in the Preferences in you Library directory and looked in the Library Preferences in the boot disk instead. -
System preferences keeps freezing up
When I keep opening up System Preferences and go into the mail setup....muy cursor keeps going to a color wheel. Then I have to force quit...and I restart the computer, etc. This is a new iMac desk top. Just wondered how I can fix this issue? thanks!
What OS X version is your iMac running? iOS 6.0.2 is for Apple's iDevices, not an iMac. You posted in the OS 9 and below (before year 2000) forum instead of the proper forum for your OS X version. To get answers to your question, repost in the proper forum. See https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa

System Preferences keeps freezing
Last night I attempted to change my desktop picture and thought I'd scroll through my own photos to choose one. When I got one in particular, it obviously changed the picture, then I couldn't change it back again. All I got was the spinning beach ball. After a force quit, I went back, started up System Prefs and immediately the ball started spinning again. Tried this a couple more times - same result. I shut down the Mac and started up again this morning - still the same. System Prefs always opens on the 'Desktop/Screen Saver' option and the ball appears and spins, neccessitating the 'force quit' option again. (running 10.7.4)
Any ideas???It is just 10.7.4
People are handing out advice to use the terminal as root and clean up the 10.7.4 mess, and I would advise against EVER using terminal unless you are a UNIX Geek like me. There is a reason OSX is a GUI based Operating System - You should never have to use it like a Green Letters on Black Screen computer.... Although that is what we are using, just with pretty graphics and buttons to click instead of typing code and script...
10.7.4 is a major fail.
I have never seen a release that has negatively affected every Apple User I know - From Mac Pro Intel V.1 to my December 2011 MBP, and everything in between.
No one should be trouble-shooting an OS that has so many random, bizzare, and fatal errors across dozens of systems?
Did Sandboxing KILL the Mac?
Noting you do will fix this - Apple needs to fix this. Like you, I have made the MBP usable, but other than that, any system message kills the MBP - first the display, then the HDD, then preferences, then finder....
Not a happy camper -
When i open my system preferences, it freezes. i have done a force quit, restart, shut down still freezes. When it opens all it says is loading images.
This morning (Sydney EST), I clicked on to System Preferences and seems to be working OK now.
Not sure what changed between yesterday and today, though I had left system preferences in "Hang" last night (in other words I didn't do a forced quit when it seemingly froze).
This morning was able to change wallpaper no problem and was able to go into other system preferences and have a play around.
I hope someone with more wit than I can make sense of all this.
Thanks - mfbe -
Urgent, my system preference freeze up
I got my desktop/screen saver system preference panel freeze up after I tried to change the desktop. I uploaded a pic to use as my desktop background and now every time I go back in there to change it, the window freezes up on me and I can't do anything except force quit. Any suggestions about how to repair this problem??? I cannot go even other system preference option.. I do not know how to fix it.. I just upgraded to Lion OS about a week ago. please let me know how to do it...
thank you very much for your help.If that happened to me, I would try Force Quit (from under the Apple icon in the Menu Bar), then choose System Preferences (force quit System Preferences and start it again).

System Preferences Freezes Constantly!!! (32-bit Core Duo Processor)
Here is my problem:
Almost every other time I try to open System Preferences it freezes. I have to Force Quit and restart it. After this, it works.
I suspect that the problem relates to an installed preference pane. If I had a 64-bit processor, I would force System Preferences to always load as 32-bit, however I don't have the option.
Basically, this problem is driving me nuts. Please advise.Enderend:
Have your tried going to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist and dragging the .plist to the Desktop then rebooting the computer? See how that affects the issue you have been experiencing.
