System Preferences always loads in 32-bit because I used CleanMyMac, XSlimmer!

Hi everyone,
I come to you today feeling very foolish. In a stupid attempt to remove unneeded files etc from my new macbook air I downloaded both cleanmymac and xslimmer (monolingual too). However, now I notice that system preferences always loads as 32-bit because in the title bar it says 'System Preferences (32-Bit mode). I cannot get it out of this. When I click cmnd + info the 32-bit box is not checked. I fear one of these programs may have stripped the 64-bit architecture needed! Does anyone have any advice or solutions? Preferebley without re-installing Lion because this laptop is new this week and I haven't yet made a back-up! I know I am an idiot! But any help from you amazing people out there would, as always, be greatly appreciated!

Hi Lex,
Thank you very much for your reply. I did what you said and I got the following reponse;
joeair:~ Joe$ sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64
> sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64
Password:
2011-10-25 11:51:20.453 defaults[321:707] Unexpected argument Flags arch=x86_64; leaving defaults unchanged.
joeair:~ Joe$
Needless to say, System Preferences is still 32-bit mode.
Thanks for trying, any idea where to go from here?

  • System Preferences always crashing

Hi there, first time MAC Forums poster, but I've used your savvy help looking up answers to my previous questions, so thanks a bunch in advance.
I've just erased and reinstalled OSX on my Macbook, and downloaded all the updates available through Software Update, and now am operating OSX 10.4.11. I haven't yet downloaded any new applications or programs, except for a wallpaper zip file from apple.com, but since then (or perhaps that single download didn't have an effect), every time I open System Preferences, it lags in loading, then opens, and when I click on an option (e.g. dashboard), it crashes and I'm left with the window that asks whether or not I'd like to report the problem, reopen application, etc.
I've booted using my OSX install disc 1 (OSX 10.4) but only to use the utilities and repair disk, nothing was reported wrong. Then I verified disk permissions, and yes there were a couple of issues, which I then proceeded to repair, and the next disk permissions verifications showed that everything was alright. But the problem is still here.
Side note: using disk utilities has shown a glitch, something I think is called redraw issues, as in the window information doesn't visually update itself and I have to drag the window a bit to see the new text (e.g. "permission xxxxx-t should be xxxxx-r", and even when I select another disk at the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window).
I hope all of this is useful information, it is, after all, a fresh new installation so I'm a little surprised.
Thanks guys, any advice would be greatly appreciated, keeping in mind that Terminal is big black hole to me, I'm a new Mac-ee.

    Hmmm, fresh install!?
*Can you afford to erase the Hard Disk & lose what is in it*?
Most likely suspect at this point is a bad spot on the HD, AHT won't find that.
    If so, then...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.
after highlighting the drive, click on the Partition tab, Options button will be down below...

  • Why does most of the "system preferences" not load due to having an intel based mac?

I used to be able to access ALL of the items in "system preferences". Since the upgrade to Mavericks, which the Apple Store did for me, I cannot use most of them. It won't load my printer information. I cannot access security and privacy, users and accouts, parental controls, etc. Sometimes a window pops up and says "Preference Error" could not load.....pane. Or it will say "Preference Error" (and something like) cannot load ....... because it's an intel based mac.  What the heck does that mean and why does it say that when I used to be able to access everything in the "System Preferences"? Please help! I'm sooooo frustrated and confused right now.

    Since the upgrade to Mavericks

  • HT2490 My System preferences always opens in a small window now.

Every time I open up system preferences it always opens in a little window.  All lf the text and the icons are all scrunched together.  I'm actually an IT person and have been doing this for years but for some reason I can find nothing on the internet addressing this issue.  I've looked at the view settings, window view settings nothing seems to address the issue.
The green button is missing to even expand it to full size.  It is very annoying and I can't seem to find a resolution.

I can't find anything, not I can't find nothing.  Boy, I hate typos.  Can anyone tell me how to get the preferences to open up in a full size window as they used to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • System Preferences always starts when logging in....

I'm doing some general maintenace on my parent's computer (macmini ppc 10.4.8). There seems to be a handfull of odd issues happening. One of them is that System Prefs always starts when logging in after a reboot. The login items for the user account has nothing checked on, and it's only his user account that has this issue.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks

I'm a complete douche. I looked in Login Items for the 10th time and this time my brain kicked in and saw "System Preferences". I feel so stupid. I looked in there multiple times and must have thought... well, I don't know what I thought. The sad thing is I've been working with unix for several years. I think it's time for a new career.
    Thanks!

  • Keyboard pane in System Preferences not loading.

My keyboard pane, seemingly randomly, does not load. All other system preferences load.
    I've tried:
    Rebooting the Computer
    Rebooting and zapping PRAM
Ran some terminal commands (I think?)
Repaired disk permissionsBTW, I see this line in Disk Utlitity: Open error 18446744073709551594: “Unknown error: -22” on System/Library/PreferencePanes/Keyboard.prefPane/Contents/Resources/English.lpr oj/Keyboard.nib
    I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4.
Please help! I just want to use my function keys!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
If you ever have another problem with the internal drive, it should be replaced immediately.

  • System preferences always wants to close and reopen

Whenever I open system preferences, and click on any icon, I get a window that says " to use (whichever icon I chose) system preferences must close and reopen". If I click OK, the reopened preferences window will then work fine. This happens every time I try to use preferences, or even use preferences for some applications. It is distressing me a bit, as I am worried that I have some virus.

This is not due to a virus, or any other kind of malware. The following may provide your solution:

  • System Preferences not loading Desktop and Screensaver

Every time I load the system preferences panel it loads fine but when I go to the desktop and screensaver settings it locks up and won't load anything so I have to force quit, if I wait it gives me the error window: system preferences quit unexpectedly, and asks if I want to reload. How do I fix this? I've restarted my computer several times and I've gone through and made sure all software updates were installed in case that was an issue.

    WELCOME!http://i29.tinypic.com/2ef7yfn.gif!
Try running +repair disk+ from your *software install DVD* and afterwards, run +repair permissions+ *from your HD.*

  • I cannot sign into iCloud on my iMac.  I have read all of the help information, but that isn't working.  I cannot do anything with my system preferences - like add a new printer - because it won't log me in, sign me out, forget password doesn't work, etc.

I have been unable to log in to iCloud on my iMac.  None of the hints online have worked.  I can't sign in (with any password), sign out, the forget password doesn't work, the support button doesn't work.  It's locked.  I can't find anyway to fix this - I need to add a new printer ASAP - help!!!

The "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" window popped up a couple of weeks ago and is asking for my Apple ID password, which it will not accept,  It won't sign me out (I am not logged in), the support or forgot password buttons won't work.  With this window stuck open, I cannot access anything on system preferences.  I can't find any way to make it go away.  I have tried both my current and old Apple ID passwords, tried using FaceTime to login with the newer password, etc.

  • System Preferences always launches on startup

Every time I restart my computer, the System Preferences panel appears, with the Universal Access pane open. I've checked my login items, and the preference pane isn't there. I even tried adding it, restarting (yes, the pane appeared), then deleting it as a login itme, restarting, and still that pane opens on startup.
This is OSX Lion, recently upgraded from Snow Leopard.
    Thank you for your help.

It wasn't open when I shut down, and I did uncheck that option. I just tried again to make sure, and it still restarts and opens that Systems Preferences pane.
Thank you for the suggestion, though.

  • I have MobileMe in place of iCloud in systems preferences? How do I change this to use iCloud?

This is my systems preferences. Where many websites are telling me iCloud is supposed to be, I have 'mobileme'. I am very keen to set up icloud on my mac and use my phone account on my laptop. My mac is fully updated, here are the details, can someone please solve my issue!

You have to upgrade to 10.7.5 or later to get iCloud.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • How do i get my system preferences back on my os x because i accedentaly deleted it

i was trying to clean my mac and i realized i threy away my sytem preferences and now i cant get it back or open it

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    An alternative to reinstalling:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)

The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1.          In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!

    11.          Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12.          In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes:          Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
      • Stop
      • Leave original alone
      • Update .....
      • Default selection
      • Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

  • System Preferences Freezes Constantly!!! (32-bit Core Duo Processor)

    Here is my problem:
Almost every other time I try to open System Preferences it freezes. I have to Force Quit and restart it. After this, it works.
I suspect that the problem relates to an installed preference pane. If I had a 64-bit processor, I would force System Preferences to always load as 32-bit, however I don't have the option.
Basically, this problem is driving me nuts. Please advise.

Have your tried going to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist and dragging the .plist to the Desktop then rebooting the computer? See how that affects the issue you have been experiencing.
