System Preferences---corrupt Icon?

When I open my System Preferences, the former icon for the printer seems corrupted. I can click on it, and it will open printer/fax preferences, BUT the icon itself looks strange. It's an oversized light switch with "print & fax" at the bottom half-way cut off. I certainly don't remember it being this way last time I opened system preferences!
I've already tried to re-start, but it did not fix the problem.
Thanks!

In previous post, Frank recommended to boot from recovery disk, go to terminal, rset paasword window and slect ''Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs''
This is what I did, exept, it was running after 24 hrs of waiting and I decide to quit. It did the same with all users...
Do you have a solution to this issue?
NOTE: Lions was reinstalled and HD erase. Repair Disk Permission done, Safe boot done.
    What do I got left?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • System preferences lightswitch icon

Hi All - I seemed to have lost the system preferences lightswitch icon in my dock. I think I accidently dragged it out and poof...it was gone! How do I get it back OR how do I get to all my system preferences, especially the software updates? thanks for your help.

    Hi Elinor
    Welcome to Discussions.
Go to Applications and locate the System Preferences application and drag it to the dock.
You could also double click on it to launch it, and once open, click and Hold on its icon in the Dock and a small menu will appear at the mouse pointer allowing you to choose Keep in Dock.
    The first way is quicker.

  • System Preferences status icons not showing in the Menubar.

After upgradind to Mavericks some System Preferences status icons stopped being shown in the Menubar.
Anyone experiencing the same? Can someone help with a tip for restoring the Menubar as it was in ML?

    Open System Prefs...
Some but not all will have an option to show in the menu bar.
For third party apps, check in the app prefs and see if it has 'show in menu bar'.

  • System Preferences Corrupt

My problem is: when I go into system preferences my start up logo is all corrupt looking. a. Why is this? b. How can I fix it/reset it back to original state? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • I am trying to revert my Java to 1.6 from 1.7. The System Preferences Java icon is disabled. But when I enter java -version in terminal it shows 1.6.0_65.  Please help me in giving explicit commands to get back my Java 1.6

I earlier had a java 1.7 installed in my system.  I wanted to revert the version back to 1.6.  I downloaded the file JavaForOSX2014-001.dmg and installed it in my hard disk.  I am not sure where it has installed it but it has successfully done it.  When I open up the terminal and enter java -version it shows 1.6.0_65 version as the java version.
But in the System Preferences, Java is disabled and does not show the java as being installed.  Please guide me in getting my java 1.6 back.

The preferences pain shows this message when I click on the Java icon -- “Java can’t be opened because it isn’t available".

  • System Preferences corrupt  ! install disk missing

For some reason my System Preferences stopped working saying its corrupt or missing and having just moved i now realise i have lost my system install disks.
What can i do i cannot believe i left the disks have rang to people were i live and whatever was left was thrown out ! how stupid can you get to leave vital disks behind.

Ok this is what happened i had been using a USB CF card reader HY-01001 no problem yesterday i had company and the llid was closed and i will still online. I took the card reader out when i turn it back on i got a security message about startup and a file called pace--something ! i took no notice really. Then i tried the card reader and that no longer works i know i never installed any software for it in the first place. I rebooted a few time but every time i got the message saying cant start up system preferences so i tried to start from the application folder but it was report not working, so i went to the directory and deleted it (after all its only an app) there was something above it called pacexxx (cant remember full name) so i deleted that. I have had this happen once before but reinstalled from my disks. Then i realised that i have lost the two disks. I had to move in a bit of a hurry and yes i forgot to pack the disks yes its my problem.
Now the Macbook 6.1 (late 2009 the serial trace says) is running the card reader will still not work yet my internet dongle works so the USB seems ok and i cannot find a download for the app system preferences. I have no idea if the Macbook as screwed the card reader up or somehow blanked card readers. sorry rambling on a bit
Apple, well to be honest i could not see why i could not find a download for the system preferences app as it seems to have problems. Its not just Apple but every company seems to use high cost phone lines and you get through to a computer designed to get as much time and money out of you as possible. Having said that i love my Macbook and iPhone so love Apple products i never registered the Macbook but signed up with Apple using the serial number so its my original bought and paid for Macbook 6.1.
Sorry once again about rabbling any advice
Why the card reader no longer works .
Can i make it work again ?
Can i find a download for the missing app ?

    anyone??

I don't remember ever seeing a hardware preference pane in Panther or in Tiger and the fact that it is located in /Library/PreferencesPanes/ instead of /System/Library/PreferencesPanes/ indicates that this is a third party thing. Are you sure this is compatible with Tiger? Or maybe you used an installer to install this preference pane in your old iBook and it installed the framework CHUD (which is not present in Panther or in Tiger) and it was not copied during the migration.

  • System preferences have icons that can't be removed?

My system preferences are showing some generic icons that not only can't be removed, but also don't work. Some of them have replaced the "real" Icons for example "Security". How do I solve this problem? See attached screen shot.

Look in the following two directories:
~/Library/PreferencePanes    (~ is your home directory)
    /Library/PreferencePanes
See if there's anything in there looking like com.apple.security (or whatever that name is on the first line of your preference icons).  Or for that matter anytuing with the name "security" in it.
All the stuff above the section marked Other should be coming from /System/Library/PreferencePanes.  For exmaple in here you would see Security.prefPane which is the one for Security.

  • System preferences default icons set not showing when modifying user account icon

    Hi!
I was willing to change my account icon and went into system preferences, accounts and groups, open my account and clicked on the icon in order to change it.
To my surprise there was no default icons showing.
All the icons are in their place in System/Lybrary/User Pictures/ but it seems there is not any info connecting them to the default icon set when modifying the accounts icon. The problem is on all the accounts.
I updated the system to 10.8.2 and the problem is still there.
I already did the permission verification and the only one which is alwasy appearing (even after repair) is someone related to "ruby".
I can give more details if needed.
Thank you everybody for your help.

    Thanks Bernard,
It works fine with JInitiator but not working with
the JPI. For JPI what settings I need to do ??hi TKARIM and Bernard, i am having similar problem even with the Bernard's recommended setup. could you post the webutiljini.htm (i presume you are using config=test) ?
i am actually using jinitiator 1.3.1.28 with Oracle HTTP Server of OAS 10gR2) calling Forms Server 6i (f60cgi). After setting up according to Bernard's recommended setup steps, the java console showed that it loaded the icon jar file when it could not read the form, but it skipped the loading of the icon jar file once it read and started the form. How do we specify in the form to pick up the icon from the jar file instead from a directory ? Or do we need to specify ? Any ideas ?
    Thx and Regards

  • I have lost the system preferences settings icon and want to reinstall my os  to orig settings unfortunately I have lost thrown out disc due to moving house, can i get a copy of hardware drivers as can buy os disc

Can anybody help I have no problems duyinng new os system,
but unable to find which hardware and drivers required for system to work

All hardware drivers are included with the Operating System, OS X.
You will need the Original system discs to Reinstall the OS clean. You can get them from Apple for a fee. So call Apple and have the serial # of your Mac and order the Replacement System Discs. And this time try not to lose or throw them away.

  • Wrong Icon is shown in the system preference

Something happened a little while ago which has cause an anomily in my system. For some strange reason, when I launch my system preferences, the icon for the startup disc looks like a wall switch. I don't know when it started or what caused it. But it is a bit aggrevating.
Anybody know how to correct this? Is the icon file stored somewhere I can get at it?
    Any help woud be appreciated.

    Hi Richard!
Have you tried using the Disk Utility application found in /Applications/Utilities to repair permissions first. This could be a simple permissions problem. Or you may need to run a disk tool like DiskWarrior <http://www.alsoft.com/>. You may have more serious problems.
    Hope this helps!
