System Preferences crash--caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in. Any ideas?

I recently updated to Firefox 5 and noticed my screen saver had changed. I tried to change it back, but when I clicked on the screen saver tab, my System Preferences crashed with this message: "The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in." I've tried repairing permissions to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem and finding it quite frustrating. Although for me it was not a Firefox update that caused the trouble, rather it was the Flash Player update. When I reverted to an older version of FP it worked again fine, but video (youtube and hulu) didn't work properly and asked me to update. When I did the same crashing problem happens again.
I've spent a while searching for fixes but found nothing....

It means you need to troubleshoot the Flash plugin...
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Launch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safa

System Preferences crashing when Screen Saver window opens

I have been having a bit of a problem for some time now (a couple weeks).
One day, I noticed my screensaver was gone, and it turned into just the name of my hard drive and the Apple symbol moving periodically on a black background. So, I tried to open the screen saver options to change it, but when I open the Screen Saver tab, the list shows up briefly with nothing on it, then it crashes. I get this error message:
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer- 10.4-10.5 plug-in.
I have re-installed Flash, but it hasn't helped. Any help on this issue would be outstanding! Thanks

Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but whenever it instals my sytems preferences die, which is very frustrating. I receive the same message as Lazula.

System Preferences Crashes When I Click the MobileMe Icon

System Preferences crashes whenever I click on the MobileMe icon in System Preferences. All other icons in System Preferences work -- only the MobileMe icon causes a crash. I tried deleting com.apple.systempreferences.plist, but it didn't help.
Any suggestions? I can't find anyone else who has posted about this error (although, to be honest, such a post may be hidden in all of the posts about MobileMe crashes).

Same here. Sys Pref crashes and sync not working. I've had the same experience on a mini with .Mac, so your problem is not an isolated experience.
The only suggestion I can offer is to go for any of the MobileMe alternatives, such as BusySync, DropBox, Spanning Sync etc. However, I don't like patchy setups like these.
I'd really love to have the MobileMe functionality, as it currently offers best integration. If it only just worked.

System Preferences Crashes When "Desktop and Screen Saver" Selected

Help. My System Preferences crashes shortly after "Desktop and Screen Saver" is selected. I'm running 10.4.10 and the firmware is up to date. I have also repaired the permissions.

This issue is often caused by a plist file which is corrupt or contains an invalid setting. To fix this issue, create a new folder on the desktop and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ as the folder's path and drag everything with a name containing com.apple.screensaver to the folder on the desktop. If the issue persists, return to the ByHost folder, press the Command and Up keys simultaneously, and then move the file named com.apple.desktop.plist to the folder you created earlier. If everything works properly with both files in the folder you created, it is safe to throw it away.

System Preferences crash (on text-to-speech settings)

Every time I try to change text-to-speech settings under System Preferences, it crashes.
I was trying to change it because I was experiencing crashing in Skype, and Skype recommended I change the default voice for text-to-speech.
All my data on this MacBook Pro came from my old MacBook Pro via a Time Machine restore. Not sure if this info is helpful or not!

System Prefs crashes on using the Update "Check Now"

Hi,
My System Preferences crashes the moment I ask the Software Update to "Check Now."
Could this be a capacity issue. I have only 1.6 GB left on my hard disk. I'm also having issues with
printing crashes from all Mac applications, but then not InDesign. This might be related, but how can I go about discovering what the problem might be? Does anyone have a few tips please. I've run Mac's First Aid from the installer disk and there were no problems.

Incredible that your Mac runs at all. You need at least 10GB, or 10% of your hard disk if that is greater, to run smoothly.
Leaving this any longer can result in data loss and a seriously messed up system, so clear out some debris now!

System Preferences crash in 10.4.7

Hello. I recently upgraded to OS X 10.4.7 and since then I have been unable to use System Preferences. I tried creating another user with admin permissions, but that did not resolve the problem. I can open the System Preferences program, but when I click on any settings it crashes. I have 36 Gig of free space left, so I don't think it's a memory issue. Also, I haven't installed any new software lately, and I didn't experience this problem until after I installed the upgrade to OS X. I've seen in other postings people referring to deleting certain preferences files, but I didn't try that because it didn't seem to help anyone. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

1. Try removing System Preferences preferences and caches:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
- com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
- com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
3. Trash the file
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
4. Trash the file
com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
5. Empty Trash.
6. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.2. If you have installed any third-party preference panes (usually found in Macintosh HD > Library > PreferencePanes folder), either:• Check for updates to either the preference panes or associated applications.
• Remove the third-party preference panes and consider uninstalling the associated applications, if any.3. If the above does not sort out the issue, immediately after the problem occurs, check the ends of these Console logs for clues.

Application system preferences crash

When I go to system preferences and try to set default applications. I get the error "The application system preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the RCDefaultApp plug-in."

Had the same problem getting into "international" in System Prefs... very annoying! But this did the trick for me, and I hope it helps you:
Go to /Users/YourUsername/Library/Preferences/ and move the file "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" to e.g. the desktop (trash it only at own responsibility before you've confirmed success). Then relaunch System Preferences and try going into International again.

System Preferences crashes

System Preferences crashes everytime I click on "Security", "Keyboard & Mouse", and "Sound". I got a Mighty Mouse for Christmas, and I need to change the settings of it. Everytime I click on "Keyboard & Mouse" it crashes. Can anybody help me? Thanks!

Can you create a new Spare User?
This will help you rule out user account corruption (and hardware/driver compatibility).
Also, try the normal maintenance.

System preference crash

i am relatively new mac user and i am just learning how to configure my macbook. my trouble began when i tried to use iTunes Artwork as my screensaver. whenever i choose it, the System Preferences crashes and the mac generates a report that will be sent to Apple. i sent the said report several times already, but i don't know how long before they will be able to act on my problem.
actually, i have already used iTunes Artwork as screensaver before, but the crash happened when i changed the option for the screen saver. i tried to change the default number of rows but when i did so, the application crashed. i couldn't get the iTunes Artwork screensaver to work since then.
i am hoping that someone will be able to look into my problem and be able to give me some advice. i am really new to mac and unix so i have very little knowledge beyond what the icons can offer (i.e. i've little knowledge on how to use the command line, if such a need arises) ...

Hi Gary, and welcome to the forums.
First off, I wouldn't hold my breath on waiting to
hear back from Apple. They may use the information in
the (millions/hundreds/dozens of) crash reports they
receive to track down bugs and software errors for
future updates, but I doubt they'll actually contact
you.
The first thing to try to resolve this is to repair
permissions on your drive. Go to
Applications/Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
Select your hard drive icon from the window on the
left, then click on the "Repair Permissions" button.
If this has no effect, boot from your install cd, and
when you see the language selection window, go to the
Utilities menu at the top of the screen and launch
Disk Utility. Select your hard drive, then click on
the "Repair Disk" button (you can't repair the disk
you have booted from, which is why this button was
greyed out when you ran Disk Utility from your hard
drive). When it's done, run the "Repair Permissions"
again, then reboot from your hard drive.
If "Repair Disk" makes any repairs, run it again. If
it's still making repairs the third time you run it,
then the problem is bigger than Disk Utility can
handle. At this point, you should purchase Disk Warrior.

hi. thanks for the suggestions. i've already done the first of your suggestion but, still, my System Preferences crashes everytime i choose iTunes artwork as my screensaver. i'll do your second suggestion later because i just have to attend to something...
regarding your suggestions, i just wanna ask if my data will be safe if i do the "Repair Disk". i have no back up of my data so i am quite worried about those.
also, i tried making a second account (a non-admin account) to experiment on whether the problem exists there or not. it turned out that on the new account, the problem doesn't exist. i hope that this will bring some solution into light...

System Preferences Crashes on quit

My System Preferences crashes on quitting consistently. I have tried to delete the preference file for this with no luck.

System Preferences crashes when I open screensaver panel after iTunes SS.

Whenever I try to open the screen saver panel in System Preferences (I'm actually just trying to change my desktop background, but I have to go through there first), System Preferences crashes. It seems to have started happening after I changed the number of rows in the iTunes artwork screen saver. I tried updating Mac OS X, running Yasu, and got nothing.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is there any way to revert my screensaver settings back to default without having to actually go to the screensaver? I just wanna change my freaking background, this is ridiculous.

Welcome to the forum.
First try magic.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1.Shut down the computer.
2.Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3.Turn on the computer.
4.Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6.Release the keys.
Than repair Disc permissions.
If above doesn't help,try this.
Quit System Preferences. Trash ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, where "~" means your home folder. (A new file will be created when you launch System Preferences again.)

System Preferences crash--caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in. Any ideas?
