System Preferences crashing when Screen Saver window opens
I have been having a bit of a problem for some time now (a couple weeks).
One day, I noticed my screensaver was gone, and it turned into just the name of my hard drive and the Apple symbol moving periodically on a black background. So, I tried to open the screen saver options to change it, but when I open the Screen Saver tab, the list shows up briefly with nothing on it, then it crashes. I get this error message:
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer- 10.4-10.5 plug-in.
I have re-installed Flash, but it hasn't helped. Any help on this issue would be outstanding! Thanks
Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but whenever it instals my sytems preferences die, which is very frustrating. I receive the same message as Lazula.

System Preferences quits when Screen Saver is set to ITunes Artwork
I have about 30,000 "songs" on an external firewire drive. When I try to set the Screen Saver preference to iTunes Artwork, System Preferences immediately unexpectedly quits. The drive is conneted to a mini core duo with with 1G RAM.
PowerMac G5, D1.8 (June '04 rev.) Mac OS X (10.4.8)Ok, I had the same problem. I'm new to Mac, only had my machine for 5 days, but i managed to fix it.
I used spotlight to locate 'itunes artwork screensaver', i got two hits... Therein lies the problem, the two files conflicted and made the systempreferences crash.
The solution is simple delete one of the two files and your itunes artwork screensaver will be back to normal. Be sure to open the files first and check the screensaver settings, (you should see the amount of rows, duration etc.) delete the file which has te settings that differ the most from the 'default' settings (when you first used the screenaver) and your problem should be solved.
Hope this will help...

Why does system preferences crash when changing screen saver?
There are several posts in this same vein, here, but I can't seem to find a specific one.
I had a process that ran and accidently began removing portions of my "user" directory. I used time machine to restore and everything seems fine now.
However, I noticed that after awhile, the screen saver would come up rather than just blanking the screen. I decided this would be ok, so I when to System Preferences-> Desktop and Screen Saver then clicked the Screen Saver tab. I chose one of the screen savers, but didn't like it. But upon re-entering the System Preferences a second time, low and behold, there were NO screen savers listed and the process hung and wouldn't close. I finally had to stop the process from the Activity Monitor, at which point it gave a dump. This has happened about 10 times.
When I go to /System/Library/Screen\ Savers/ there is no content there. Same goes for ~/Lirbrary/Screen\ Savers/. So it looks as if they are gone. I have a Mac Book Pro, however, that behaves the same way (except its running Snow Leopard instead of Lion). So I don't know that's it.
I have run permissions repair and checked the disk and all is well.
I have set System Preferences to not run in 32 bit, as someone suggested, but that didn't do anything either.
I have a 2009 iMac with 4GB and about 3/4th full disk.
Could anyone suggest any more alternatives? Thanks Linc. I am not really comfortable with the re-install approach I guess, but it may be all I have left. I tried to go back to a previous backup on Time Machine and just replace systempreferences.app but the backup wouldn't let me do that. I have restored library in my home directory but I did so only piecemeal based on things that seemingly got disturbed.
One very odd thing... I left my computer on this morning and came back a little later and lo and behold a screen saver was running. This was a bit of a surprise, seeing that when I go to the system preferences and try to see screen savers, they aren't there and that's when the app hangs. So, apparently the screen savers are SOMEWHERE, but not able to be seen. That's what is killing me. I feel as if its a permission problem, yet when I run a repair-permissions, it finds nothing wrong. The screen saver files are supposed to be somewhere, but I have a feeling they are hidden somehow, and because of that, I can't change anything. The result baffling part is that even in terminal mode, viewing /System/Library/Screen\ Savers/ or the home library folder, shows absolutely nothing in Finder OR terminal mode. So they are either completely gone or hiding. I have to assume the latter, seeing that a screen saver started up.
So if anyone has an idea how these files could be hiding, or where, other than the locations above, that would be a very good thing to know. -
System preferences crashes when mouse icon is selected. All other icons seem to function.Software is OSX 10.7.5. Update shows software is updated. I tried to reset the PRAM, but it did not help. When resetting PRAM, I did not get a 2nd klaxon on startup.
That implies that the underlying OS is corrupted. Best thing to do is boot into recovery mode and reinstall the OS, unless you have an installer copy. If so, use Pacifist to reinstall the SystemPreferences app.

System Preferences Crashes When "Desktop and Screen Saver" Selected
Help. My System Preferences crashes shortly after "Desktop and Screen Saver" is selected. I'm running 10.4.10 and the firmware is up to date. I have also repaired the permissions.
This issue is often caused by a plist file which is corrupt or contains an invalid setting. To fix this issue, create a new folder on the desktop and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ as the folder's path and drag everything with a name containing com.apple.screensaver to the folder on the desktop. If the issue persists, return to the ByHost folder, press the Command and Up keys simultaneously, and then move the file named com.apple.desktop.plist to the folder you created earlier. If everything works properly with both files in the folder you created, it is safe to throw it away.

System Preferences crashes when I open screensaver panel after iTunes SS.
Whenever I try to open the screen saver panel in System Preferences (I'm actually just trying to change my desktop background, but I have to go through there first), System Preferences crashes. It seems to have started happening after I changed the number of rows in the iTunes artwork screen saver. I tried updating Mac OS X, running Yasu, and got nothing.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is there any way to revert my screensaver settings back to default without having to actually go to the screensaver? I just wanna change my freaking background, this is ridiculous.
Thanks.Welcome to the forum.
First try magic.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1.Shut down the computer.
2.Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3.Turn on the computer.
4.Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6.Release the keys.
Than repair Disc permissions.
If above doesn't help,try this.
Quit System Preferences. Trash ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, where "~" means your home folder. (A new file will be created when you launch System Preferences again.) -
System Preferences crashes when opened
Hello everyone, my system preferences crashes whenever I try to access it. Using a 2006 macbook with OS X 10.5.8. I've checked out a few threads by other users with similar issues, but their solutions haven't worked for me. I've tried deleting library .plist files, the cache folder, and repairing disk permissions a while back. My computer otherwise runs fine, but not being able to change settings is getting to be a nuisance. Newest crash report below. thanks in advance for any advice.

Is this what you tried already?
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
System preference freezes on screen saver icon
system preferences freezes when trying to use desktopand scree saver
Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be two such files. Move the onewithout the word "slideshow" in the name to the Trash.
Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab. -
System Preferences crashes when I try to set file sharing
I've installed Mountain Lion on a Late 2009 Mac Mini. When I enter System Preferences > Sharing and attempt to add a file sharing folder System Preferences crashes. I've tried this with a different user account and I have also attempted to trash user preference files with not luck. Right now I'm downloading ML once again to try a clean install... once again.
Anyone else seen this occur? Thanks.Yes I had tried to insert the screen cap image and it began crashing Safari on every attempt. Whew, that's another issue though clearly...
Here is a copy/paste from the Console. Let me know if you need to see a different part...

System Preference crash when editing built-in configuration
My built-in ethernet is working fine, with a static IP. However, now whenever I try to edit the built-in ethernet configuraiton the System Preferences crash. (I have sent a report to Apple on the crash.)
I have tried reinstalling the System with keepting the previous users. It appears the configuration is brought over into the new configuration but System Preferences still crashes.
I also get the same problem if I try to edit the Locations.
Also everytime I open the network panel, I get a warning that a new port has been detected - Bluetooth. That happens whether bluetooth is turned on or not.
I can edit the airport configuration or my VPN definitions.I suspect it is an incompatible configuration from my previous Macbook G4 17" as well.
Any ideas on which specific files I should try to change? I have been digging around but can't seem to find the relevant files yet.
Thanks. -
System Preferences crashes when I try to set limitations on a managed user
Need help please. I have a managed account setup for my son. When I have the account set to "some limits" and try to locate a file to add/remove from his limit, the system preferences crashes (spinning rainbow.) Only way to recover is to restart. Also happens when I try to click on "This user can only use these applications." Get immediate spinning rainbow.
Many thanks!! D

First of all you need to make sure you are not getting impatient <and or> getting in a hurry, here. There can be other answers for a spinning rainbow, that needs the time to work itself out. It isn't always an indication of a crash but a more of a system hang.
Also there is missing specs such as available memory and HD space that could hold answers as to why there could be a lag in setting up the user account.
Other things like, when was the last Repair Permissions done? Do you use any other "X" Utilities like Onyx or Yasu?
Just look things over and get back if you should have any "?s".

System preferences crash when trying to change network settings web proxy
I'm trying to add a web proxy under the network panel of system preferences. When I set up the password for the web proxy, the system preference panel crashes. I've successfully done this in the past. I'm not sure why the problem is occuring now.
imac G3 Mac OS X (10.4.8) summer 2000 slot loading dvd imacFirst thing to do is download Preferential Treatment and check all preference files, while logged into that problematic account. Trash any that it finds broken/corrupt. Quit the associated apps and try System Preferences again. If PT doesn't find any, then move the usual plists to the Desktop (com.apple.systempreferences.plist amd com.apple.NetworkUtility/plist in ~/Library/Preferences/, including any such as com.apple.systempreferences.XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.plists in the ByHost folder and try System Preferences again.
If those steps don't fix things, you can either copy the ones from the new user to the corrupt user, a couple at a time, log out and back in, and see if any fix or break things. That's a slow and tedious process. Alternatively, log into the new account, reset prefs, and eventally delete the old one. There's no easy way except to routinely make a bootable backup/clone and when you experience these kinds of problems again, restore it, and move on. -
System Preferences Crashes When I Click the MobileMe Icon
System Preferences crashes whenever I click on the MobileMe icon in System Preferences. All other icons in System Preferences work -- only the MobileMe icon causes a crash. I tried deleting com.apple.systempreferences.plist, but it didn't help.
Any suggestions? I can't find anyone else who has posted about this error (although, to be honest, such a post may be hidden in all of the posts about MobileMe crashes).
ThanksSame here. Sys Pref crashes and sync not working. I've had the same experience on a mini with .Mac, so your problem is not an isolated experience.
The only suggestion I can offer is to go for any of the MobileMe alternatives, such as BusySync, DropBox, Spanning Sync etc. However, I don't like patchy setups like these.
I'd really love to have the MobileMe functionality, as it currently offers best integration. If it only just worked.
