System preferences has error message: damaged or incomplete.

Move the com.apple.systempreferences.plst file out of /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if that fixes the problem.

You can't open the application System Preferences because it may be damaged or incomplete.
say this and same on mac store when i press app

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • System preferences is damaged and won't open

i think my girlfriend deleted it. The icon looks strange now and when I open it says it is damaged...what do i do?? Please Help

I have tried to reboot, and I have tried to repair permissions but does not work... permissions are all fine, and I can open all the system preferences if I go in to the hard drive and open the folder they are in indiviually but I can not open the system preferences using the icon in the dock...also the icon has a big X on it now!

  • System Preferences - ScreenSaver Pref Damaged & now Dock MIA

I have 2- 27" iMacs, both with OS 10.7.5, one I was going to use for teaching and never used (updated...etc) it was in the box for a year and a half. I DID HOWEVER, Upgrade the Memory and MAX it to 16GB. When I recently sold it to my employer (TO MY HORROR) I discovered that the company I purchased it from...had put in 2 bad memory chips and was crashing and causing a Kernel Panic Window to drop and damaged some of my 4.5GB (YES GB) files in the process.
After 4 days of HORROR and bringing the software up to date, repairing permissions....etc... I finally figured the chips were bad - then had to experiment as to which chips were bad....2 Chips were bad...so I replaced the chips (thankfully still under warranty) and now - NO more crashes (knock on wood).
HOWEVER, in the process...my System Preferences are goofed up as well as other .apps that come standard. iphoto...etc.
The System Prefs would crash every time I tried to open the window...so I had removed the Preference Pane for the screen saver, because I thought that was what was crashing me, I thought it was putting itself to sleep.
The System Prefs  DO open now without the Screen Saver in there...however...now my Dock is gone.
I'm able to work in Photoshop CC and my programs...but my Sys Prefs are still goofed up and I don't know what happened to my Apps! What a frustrating, hair greying week!
I know this is long winded but hoping to help others that are having Kernal Panics and shut down issues.... that it may be a damaged RAM Chip issue and NOT a power source...or anything else that requires putting it in the shop!
I am making a USB REBOOT so I can reinstall OSX Lion...but don't want to lose what I have. Can I back up this on File Vault? I kinda hate backing it up there since the system is all monkeyed up. Can I just back up programs and files? Can I "Restore in place"? It says it runs a Diagnostic... is this true?
Just need advice so I don't lose my mind and credibility with my new employer by selling him a problem!

Ha! Ha! Maybe I will resolve my own issue... Here's where the USER LIBARY can be found. Holding down the OPTION key open the GO menu in your finder. Scroll to Library and that's where you find it. It's no longer in your USER Folder on the desktop. This is where "com.apple.desktop.plist" can be deleted. So I will try that FIRST thing...hope I can get my dock back.
NOW. Should I find and dump all the Prefs for the Apps? Maybe that will help first. Since they may still crash... we shall see

i think i put system preferences in my trash by accident and now it says i cant open it because it may be dameged or incomplete what do i do??? HELP please?

Did you retrieve it from the trash, or are you trying to open it while in the trash?
If it's become corrupted you'll need to reinstall the OS to be sure of repairing it properly. If you're on 10.6 that won't affect your accounts and data, but as you don't mention what OS you have we can't give specific advise on the install.

  • HT201250 i was trying to manually erase files from my macbook air. at one point, my system preferences disappeared from the dock and i had a pop up message telling me the application was 'incomplete'. I tried to reinstall iLife but i wont work.

I used the small key that comes with the air but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Am i supposed to be reinstalling OS X or iLife? I tried OS X and I didn't see much difference except for the return of my system preferences and safari which had initially disappeared, but I'm still missing the App Store and iPhoto. I can't reinstall iLife either.

Try a few things: 1) restart in safe mode (restart holding the shift key) and this will repair the drive (if need be) and trim/delete cache files. Restart normally.
    2) if you use iPhoto or Aperture launch the program and then empty the trash folder of the program(s).  Launch your Mail program and check out how much is in the Trash and Archive folders. You can delete the really old stuff if there is any.
    3) Download omniDiskSweeper (free) to see what's on your drive. Be careful about deleting anything that isn't in your personal drive space and be very careful about deleting anything in the Library folder.

  • Sent Classic to the Trash-Damaged OSX System Preferences Pane

I decided to delete Classic as I no longer use it. Using Spotlight I identified various Classic files and folders and deleted them.
One of them must have belonged to the OSX System Preferences pane, as the Classic Preferences icon has now disappeared.
Can I get this back? If I need to reinstall Classic later I assume I shall need it
    iBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

That's normal, isn't it? The Classic icon only appeared in my Sys Pref panel after I accidentally clicked on a OS9 application. (Started out with 10.4.4 on my mini).
I am reasonably sure should you attempt to start a Classic app, the icon in your Sys Pref panel will re-appear as well.

  • Time machine is not working. I get a message: You can't open the application "Time Machine" because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Time machine is not working under "Applications". I get this message: You can’t open the application “Time Machine” because it may be damaged or incomplete. What do I do?
Time machine under system preferences lets me setup time capsule. But backup fails because "Volume is in use" Help please!

It does sound like you have a corrupted install.
The volume in use error is something we see all the time.
    Look at C12 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But I suspect you have more serious issue.
I would run a disk verify on your local OS disk. A5 in the above reference has some info.

  • The document "SpeechSynthesisServer.app" could not be opened because it is damaged or incomplete.

I just upgraded from Mac OSX 10.6.8 to OSX 10.8.
I logged into my account for the first time and had this error:
The document “SpeechSynthesisServer.app” could not be opened because it is damaged or incomplete.
From what I've been able to find, the SpeechSynthesisServer.app has to do with the Text-to-speech recognition.
Initially, I was unable to get text-to-speech to work correctly.  But after I reset the key command, it worked.
Is this something I should worry about?

I think this bug may hit people whose user accounts have gone through a few versions of OS X AND are going directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. In my case my user account started out with 10.2 - so it's picked up some cruft.
There are several items in my non-admin user Preferences:Users and Groups:User:Login Items that are not in my Admin account user including an item called SpeechSynthesisServer. It had a yellow warning triangle next to it and the data type was unrecognized.
I removed it from Login Items, logged out, logged in, and the bug was gone.
The LoginIn item is referencing a system app, that app is still present post upgrade:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A
    /Frameworks/SpeechSynthesis.framework/Versions/A.
I suspect the app is still important. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING IN SYSTEM/LIBRARY. Just leave it alone
iTunesHelper was also on the one user's LoginItems and I removed it.
I think there are a couple of bugs with the Login Item migration from SL to ML. For example, a disk image I mounted showed with a yellow icon too. I removed it, added it back in, and it was fine.
    Thanks jf.  That's helpful.
I installed ML an hour or so ago, going from 10.6.8 to 10.8.2.  Having read quite a few comments I decided to take my time over this.
ML downloaded fine. About half an hour maybe.  Installed itself then my iMac was restarted and, hey-presto, I'm back in business with a new OS.
Bit worried that my iMac was now rather sluggish, but not overly so because some kind person had posted on the App store that his Mac speeded back up after he had restarted.  This proved the case for me too.
Went through all the set up screen re iCloud and App store.  All the while I noticed my external backup drive was very busy too. Must be using it as temporary space I thought to myself.
Anyway, I decided that the first thing I should do is run Software Update.  I had several items that needed updating and whilst one of them was installing, that dreaded message that all you guys are talking about popped up.  I took a screen shot for later.

Not long after this my iMac's sceen turned black.  I assumed this was due to the screen saver cutting in.  It had done so about every 5 minutes during the time ML was downloading - apparently without causing a problem. I left it a while, then fired up the screen again.  Then I got a dreadful fright when a message came up full screen telling me my iMac had encountered a problem and it was having to restart!
I decided toplay it cool and let everything play through and let the Mac restart, see what happens. Turned out I was worrying unnecessaryily, all I needed to do was run Software Update again.  I downloaded the items individually this time, not all in one go like before.  All seems okay - at the moment.
I still don't know what this SpeechSynthesisServer.app problem is.  Text to Speech still seems to work.  I wonder if it has anything to do with the new Voice recognition that I'm itching to try out.
Anyway, I'm leaving Voice recog alone for now until I'm more familiear with ML.
"DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING IN SYSTEM/LIBRARY."  I notice that the Library is now hidden from us. Maybe what you say is the reason why?
By the way, I think I worked out why my iMac was sluggish when I first fired up ML.  Spotlight was rebuilding it's database!
