System Preferences/ Desktop Freezes
Lately every time I open my system preferences and try to change my desktop or screen saver, it does one of two things:
1. It 'unexpectedly quits' after a few seconds of being frozen, or
2. It freezes and just stays frozen until I force quit it.
I don't have many pictures, at least not enough to freeze it, I think. Help would be appreciated ~
Welcome to Apple Discussions, linnea.
Quit System Preferences and delete these files:
Delete these files or folders then relaunch System Preferences.

I think it has to do with some third party app. I've used Kuvvo to automatically get wallpapers from the net en change them.
After I decided to go back to my own wallpapers and removed the Kuvvo app, my wallpaper prefs is crashing.
I tried to reinstall Kuvvo with the hope of fixing broken links / references but to no avail! -
Deleting files out of system preferences desktop background.
Does anyone know how to delete files out of system preferences>desktop & screen saver?
Some how when adding one photo to the file for the desktop background it took the entire photo file. So that instead of one photo for the file it has over 200 now. Read everything and tried everything. Still can't figure out how to delete that file from the list.
I know how to add photos or whatever to use as desktop background just no idea how to remove them from the list.
Any ideas?Doug,
When you go to system preferences>desktop & screen savers>desktop. On the left is a window with the names of the images listed. Apple Images, Nature file, Plants file, Picture Folder, Choose Folder and so forth. The ones that come with Apple products. Not sure what all else is native to Apple.
Iv been using my own desktop background since the day I got the iBook. Normally I just get one photo or image and more it there to use. But, last week I did something different or wrong. Maybe holding a button to long, not sure. Instead of moving the one photo it moved the entire photo file. That file had over 200 (2,500x1,800 in size & over 550KB for each) and probably closer to 250 photos in it.
Way to many to be there. And I simply can't find a way to remove that file from the desktop list. I can high light it, but it doesn't delete with the delete button. I can high light it, but it doesn't change anything in system preferences banner to edit, view, etc....to remove it either. It won't click & drag to trash.
Being very careful because I don't want to delete the file and by error delete it totally off the computer. I could creat a new file with only 1 photo in it for use as the desktop background. Then try to choose that file. However, since the last big OS-X update it's been doing this. Everytime I choose a file or photo it's adding the entire file not just the 1 photo. And Iv managed to add 3 files so far to that list.
Any ideas? Thx, Mike -
The System Preference:Desktop&Screensaver will not open. I get a rotating circle that never stop rotating. I have to do a Force Stop.
Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item. -
System Preference
Desktop & Screen Saver (can't access)
When trying to access desktop pictures to change screen image - it's beachballing -
“Loading images…”
Please adviseThat's because of a problem with the Desktop settings file. First, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, you will be able to change the wallpaper and access to Desktop and Screen Saver

System preferences- desktop/screensaver pane, freezing
when I open apple system preferences pane, desktop and screen saver. in order to change either the screen saver or the desktop background the cursor becomes jittery then freezes then the whole system freezes. Any suggestions anyone?
Hi Peter, and a warm welcome to the forums!
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<12digitHex Number>.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Then reboot once more. -
System preference -- desktop and screen saver problem
whenever i go into system preference and into the desktop and screen saver menu... the computer always freezes? with a spinning colored wheel ? can anyone tell me why... or should i bring it to the apple store to have the tech check it out?
ThanksCould be that the prefs file has been hosed and it's getting stuck trying to write to it. Maybe delete the prefs file in /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Re-start and see what happens. Likewise run permissions repair in case that is the problem.
The spin event may also show up in your logs, so open 'console' in utilities and check for further info on why the Mac froze. -

Are you saying that your hard drive has problems that Disk Utility is unable to repair? If that is the case, you have directory problems which is why you have other problems. You can try a stronger utility like Disk Warrior and see if it will repair your drive. I think System Preferences is not working because your hard drive has directory problems.
It's also possible that the disk cannot be repaired because it is failing physically. I assume that Disk Utility shows SMART as verified. However, it might be worth getting a second opinion by downloading SMART Utility:
http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It seems to be somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner. If the drive is failing physically, you will have to replace it. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior can only repair the complex software on the drive--they cannot repair it physically.
Good luck! -
How do I stop the System Preferences from freezing on my Macbook Pro?
The System Preferences option on my MacBook Pro keeps freezing. Whenever I click on it is immediately freezes and shoes the rainbow wheel to show it is busy. I am currently running OS X 10.7.2. Can anyone please help?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
Sharing in System Preference keeps freezing
Hi there,
This is my first ever thread. I'm having some issues with System Preference for Sharing panel. Everytime I enter into it, the pane freezes and can't select/deselect any items. I've even gone to the trouble of Restoring the whole OS Mountain Lion. I can't close or go back, instead I have to quite the System Preference.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
System Preferences- Desktop/Screen saver- crash EVERY TIME
Hi-
I have a brand new iMAc 24" with Leopard and all software is up to date via update as of 12 hours ago (10.5.1 etc). I have office 2004 and photoshop/illustrator but NO other software loaded. The computer is now 7 days old. Yesterday I used system preferences to change my desktop picture to something from my iPhoto library, as per normal with 10.5.1 I got one picture up and then went to change it and now EVERY TIME I try to change anything in the desktop/screen saver system preferences the application dies. I can get the desktop/screen saver page to open but as soon as I click any conceivable option on that window the system preferences application dies. I have sent about 7 crash reports to apple and see that others are describing similar (not identical) problems. Is apple going to fix this? I DID not install leopard on this computer, its BRAND NEW. The only thing I have done is to update whatever apple told me was available. HELP...My computer was a month old when I installed Leopard (which turned out to be an adventure....), and once I finally got a proper install one of the features I explored was Desktop and Screensaver, specifically I tried the new mosaic option in the Screensaver for pictures, it seemed to work. The 10.5.1 update came out, a bit later I tried that Screensaver option again and not only did it not work, but it crashed System Prefs. I ended up trashing every plist and cache file having to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and iphotomosaic in my home ~/Library folder. Oh, and in searching for them they managed to crash the Finder too. So take a look thru ~/Library, especially Preferences, be sure to also look in the ByHost folder, and you might also check the Caches folder. Remove all files you can find that have to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and Desktop. Once I did that all was fine again with my System Prefs. The mosaic option even started working again.

Every time I open system preferences, it freezes and I have to force quit.
Everytime I open my system preferences to do, or change, anything it freezes and I a have to force quit, I have tried deleting .plist files and restarting and its still reoccuring.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.
You can add that information to your Apple Support Communities profile. At the top of any ASC window click Your Stuff > Profile > Edit. You must be signed into to do this. -
My Menu Bar has gone + Date and Time causes System Preferences to freeze
Hi my ibook has recently lost its menu bar, I have had a search around the forum to see if i can find the answer but i cant. If you reselect items from system preferences such as bluetooth display etc. nothing appears in the menu bar. If i go to the time and date menu just opening it causes sytem prefs to stop responding and you can only force quit out of it. Are the two things related?
I tryed to remove the com.apple.systemmenu file as one of the post on here said to do, but alas nothing. is it gone for ever?
Will i have to reinstall os-x
Many thanks in advance
olly boustead - UKcould this be involved? or does the mac not even get time to place the icon before it freezes.
Yes, it might. I thought I had reproduced this, since I also got "Click the lock to make changes" with no icon, but after a short delay the "open lock" icon appeared and the text changed to "Click the lock to prevent further changes". So maybe this shows there is a problem with the icon file. More on this later.
is this another factor?
Does your login password still work as the keychain password? If so, start Keychain access and choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu.
I doubt this will affect the lock icon, but let us know if the keychain password problem goes away first, then we can look at the other problem. -
I don't know how report a bug in Mac OS X (10.5.3) for this reason I post in this forum.
If I set the language of the system to "Español" (Spanish) since 10.5.2 appear a visual bug in +System Preference+, exactly in *Desktop & Screensaver* with the right scrollbar. This bug doesn't appear if i switch the system language, example, to English.
