System Preferences Fails
Tried to change the wallpaper on a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.1. It failed with the error detailed below. Now this happens only in one user the Standard account, the admin can changes it's desktop picture.
I cannot interpret the error messages to a solution. I do not want to delete the non admin. I have been a good boy and the non admin has the vast majority of my user data.
Said data has changed a lot recently with the addition of lots of pictures , part of a consolidation of such over the two main Mac s I have. Those many pictures did not present a problem for the standard user over the last week. I have changed the wallpaper. The newest factor, if such, is the installation of Picasa and its collation of quite a lot of pics.
The short version of the problem is that I click on Display in Sys Prefs and it says "loading images' then it collapses. The standard user does still retain the image set before the issue arose and keeps it through restarts and shut downs.
Now the error message. Sorry for prolixity as I don't know how to append a link or attachment. Ps this a precis of the error. Cant seem to post the full version of the error.

post an attachment? do you mean include a picture in your post?
You need to upload it first to one the web somewhere. like one of the image hosting sites like ImageShack. then to include a link to this picture just paste the URL in the post and surround it by exclamation marks like this
!http://www.blah.com/my.jpg!

I have a new 3 TB Western Digital ext. HD. I used Super Duper to clone my MacPro HD to the ext. HD. I want to be certain that I can use it as a Startup disk in an emergency. To test this, I wanted to restart with the new drive as the startup disk. The disk image is on the desk top and the computer recognizes it but in System Preferences>Startup Disk, it does not appear. Any ideas? Mid 2010 MacPro w/ Yosemite 10.10.1
System Report>System Info>Storage lists the new ext. HD but System Preferences>Startup disk does not show it.
Many thanks.I did not see anything about GUID there. I formatted with Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but I think I erred there. On the left column, there is a list of items. Next to the bottom, it lists my HD on 2 lines. On the very bottom line, after an indent, the HD is listed once again. I selected the indented lower line to clone to. I'll bet that I should have selected the upper line.
When I click on the upper line, Disk Utility blank space after "Format" fills in with MS-DOS (FAT). I'll change that to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and clone to that line selection.
You gave me the idea to re-check Disk Utility and recognize what I think was my error. However, I am not going to prove that. I shall install Yosemite on the ext. HD and go from there. I never would have thought of that. Thank to y'all and that includes LINC. Great help! -
I cloud system preferences fails to validate storage server credentials. Ical fails to sign in but I can get information on my account from the system preferences. My system is 10.7.5 on a mac pro 1.1. I am very frustrated I hope someone has a solution.
PS keychain is funky as well I have repaired permissions and reset the ACL as well.I have the same issue. I think whatever it is it is related to the fact that the ~Library\Application Support\com.apple.TCC folder is locked and I do not have permission to see its contents. Looking at the info on the folder, it was created and last written to when I updated to Mavericks last night - and that would also be when my problems started.
Another issue I've noted with Mavericks: After I displayed my desktop on my television via AppleTV just to test out that cool feature and then disconnected the AirPlay from the AppleTV, all subsequent clicks on the up and down arrows of the AppleTV remote cause the volume of my Mac to increase and decrease correspondingly. -
System Preferences hangs with Mountain Lion
Various parts of system preferences hang under Mountain Lion. Prior to upgrade there was no problem. Any ideas?
I am still having this problem as well. Multiple panes will fail to launch. A reinstallation of ML failed to fix this. I even did a fresh reinstall, manually copying over my Documents, Music, Pictures, and other essential files to a backup drive beforehand. Almost all System Preferences fail to launch. A list of those that fail:
Desktop & Screensaver
Security & Privacy
Notifications
iCloud
Mail, Contacts, & Calendars
Date & Time
Software Update (The only one that seems to extend beyond the preference pane. Software update will not launch, even though I know there are iPhoto and iTunes updates to be downlaoded.)
Dictation & Speech
Time Machine (I really, really, really, really, really want this one to work!)
Startup Disk
Third-party:
Glimmer Blocker (I have let the developer know. There is an update, it does not seem to be working at this time.) -
System Preferences and Photobooth
I've had my MAC PRO for at least one month and it had never given me any problems. That is until today. I tried changing the wallpaper and to my suprise my laptop indicates that, "The application system preferences cannot open because it may damaged or incomplete."The same goes for Photobooth, there a big question mark on the icon and refuses to open.
What can or should I do? Thanks. The same goes for Photobooth, there a big question mark on the icon and refuses to open.
Need some clarification. Is that question mark in the dock? Look in your /Applications directory for Photo Booth. Is it there? If so you can always drag the question mark out of the dock and drag the Photo Booth icon into the dock to replace it.
If your system preferences failed, or if photo boot failed there some obvious suggestions to first attempts at fixing (e.g., removing plists). But the question mark happening at the same time both are failing is, well, questionable. So first things first, is Photo Booth there? And can you run anything else, for example, Safari? -
System Preferences - Parental Controls - System Preferences quit unexpectedly.
Hi all,
I have a 21.5-inch, Late 2009 IMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50), and for some time now if I go into System Preferences and select Parental Controls and then select an account I get a "System Preferences quit unexpectedly" window. Can anyone help to resolve this issue please?
Many thanks,

System Preferences (Not Responding)
This simple maintance is turning out to be a nightmare! I was attempting to modify an account in users & groups in system preferences. I clicked on the lock to make changes and what else, the spinning beachball. System preferences would not respond and ram (real memory) shrunk in a hurry. I started with about 6G free and at last look, I am down to 1.7G. It is the SystemUIServer (1.86G) and the loginwindow(1.84G) along with system preferences(272M) that are grabbing up the ram. I took a look in the console log and found the following error:

The most annoying thing about this is I will force quit system prefs and reboot and all will be normal. I can launch system Prefs and go into other administrative option with no problems. Yes it is a kernal panic and yes I could do a clean install and cross my fingers and hope it does not happen. I would prefer to finesse the problem than go at it with a sludge happer. Any sugestions? it would be most appreciatedSame thing here. I recently had to delete a user, and doing so somehow inadvertently removed the main account... so I had to login as root and restore the user.
Since doing that, when I open System Prefs and try to make changes to the user account, the system freezes and System Preferences won't respond. Also, the fans fire up as though I were doing something extremely intensive like rendering video.
I'm also noticing the system is responding far more sluggishly. -

Hello.
I am having a problem accessing Account Preferences. When i click on the Account icon, it loads the Accounts but does not display any icons under it. This is what my console shows.

Thank you

The Problem
Users are unable to change their password using System Preferences -> Users & Groups on a Mac that is connected to an LDAP server (specifically, OpenLDAP).
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com).
(a bug report for this issue has been filed with Apple and can be seen on OpenRader @http://openradar.appspot.com/11768796)
Steps to Reproduce:
Try to change the password using the System Preferences -> Users & Groups prefpane on Lion. It fails with the following error message:
The password for the account “bobsmith” was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.
Expected Results:
The password should be changed.
Actual Results:
The error appears, and on the LDAP server, an error like the following is logged:
Jun 28 08:42:21 ldap3 slapd[7810]: conn=10518785 op=2 RESULT oid= err=21 text=Invalid DN
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com)
Notes: This was encountered by someone else over at the AFP548.com forums who ended up patching their LDAP server to resolve the issue. This shouldn't require patching LDAP to resolve, however. Lion needs to (at least have an option to) send the full DN of a user requesting to change their password, not the short username:
Text from above forum link (in case it is taken down):
So, I’ve got this OpenLDAP server with network home directories at home that all of my Mac machines authenticate to. Everybody can bounce around to whatever Mac is available. It works great.
Anyway, with Snow Leopard, I was able to change user passwords via System Preferences. However, that got broken when I upgraded to Lion (amongst other things). Both Snow Leopard and Lion send exop’s to the ldap server, but for whatever reason, the id is screwed up in Lion (or at least, it’s screwed up on the two machines at home I tested this with). Instead of sending the user’s DN, e.g. “uid=user,cn=users,ou=something,dc=somewhere,dc=com”, the ldap server is only sent the uid, e.g. “user”. The ldap server is expecting a DN here, so naturally, it fails with the error “Invalid DN”.
Bummer.
So, to work around that, I had to patch OpenLDAP (version 2.4.26 in this case). Now, when my server can’t resolve the id it’s given during a password change, it will look at the bind DN, and if the id string is contained within the bind DN string, it will just use the bind DN as the entry to change. I figured this would still allow me to manually specify password changes via an admin account while still giving users the ability to change their own passwords without having to point them at a webpage (lame).
I should point out that all my accounts have the uid as part of the DN… I guess if you were doing some kind of crazy SASL mappings, this might not work for you…
Anyway, here’s the patch in case anyone else is interested… If it works for you, great. If not, oh well.

I tried to change my password with dscl too, like so:

System Preferences silently fails on relaunch
hi all..
I just installed a utility on 10.7.5 called Orbicule Witness. It adds a pane to System Preferences. On reboot following install of the utility I tried to access System Preferences and see the following in a Console App window:
13-04-01 12:09:19.602 AM System Preferences: dlopen_preflight failed with dlopen_preflight(/Library/PreferencePanes/Witness.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Witne ss): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/PreferencePanes/Witness.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Witness: GC capability mismatch for /Library/PreferencePanes/Witness.prefPane
and a dialog appears telling me "To use the Witness preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.". So i press "OK" and it sends the following message to the console:
13-04-01 12:10:35.219 AM launcher: posix_spawnattr_setbinpref_np failed
This is consistently reproducible. It seems that System Preferences is trying to relaunch in a fashion that is compatible with the Witness pane, but silently fails for some reason (btw "silently fails" is Concentrated Evil).
Is there some way to determine why it is failing and fix the problem?
thanks!I have uninstalled it and, of course, the System Preferences loads. Did it twice to make sure. You can also take a shortcut to de-register the Witness pane and, again, System Preferences loads.
Also tried setting the System Preferences app to 32-bit using Get Info.. that does not work, but I don't see any visual indication that the System Preferences app is actually running in 32-bit mode. Is there some way of telling? If System Preferences cannot run in 32-bit mode then it's probably an OS issue. If it can, and the Witness pane still is not loading, then it seems likely to be app-specific. -
I went to my system preferences today and they are all gone except for my language and text icon! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??
Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions. -
Mac Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work
Hello,
I have a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3,
and it has been installed with the latest software updates possible.
(The latest update is the 'Security Update 2010-003')
Previously I was using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 on my MacBook,
and I can vaguely remember the timed computer sleep through Energy Saver would work.
That is, when the counter's time matches the amount of time I specified (e.g. 10 minutes), the computer enters sleep mode and displays a pulsing power light.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can barely remember the scheduled computer sleep will work as I don't really notice how it sleeps / I will shut down my MacBook before I go to bed.
==========
However, last night I was really tired and slept in front of my MacBook unconsciously.
When I woke up, I found that my MacBook didn't display a pulsing power light but a continuously-growing power light.
I tapped the trackpad and the display turned on, so I knew that my MacBook didn't go to sleep a whole night.
*What that means is that the Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work.*
But the timed display sleep DOES work.
==========
After spending a whole day Googling,
I found that there are plenty of people suffering the same problem as me, although their Macs and OSs vary.
I also found an official support page from Apple concerning the related issue:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
I tried the following methods but still can't resolve the problem:
_- boot my MacBook in safe mode_
_- use the 'Disk Utility' to repair Disk Permissions through booting my MacBook from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation DVD_
_- reset NVRAM (Intel-based) (as PRAM is used by PowerPC-based Macs)_
_- reset SMC (System Management Controller)_
NONE of the above-mentioned methods can resolve the problem.
Althought I am sure that the Spotlight isn't indexing the hard drive, and I just start my computer and do nothing and wait for the scheduled computer sleep, the scheduled computer sleep just won't work.
In the other Mac forum, I saw someone suggest installing an application called PleaseSleep:
http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/
It works.
But I really want to find out what caused this problem as this is a function shipped with Mac which is expected to work normally.
What's more, Apple is claiming to be a green Apple, right?

Looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance!Found this discussion by googling "com.apple.systempreferencescouldn't find any matches"...
One month ago I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13", and after a couple of weeks I realized it wasn't sleeping on its own when it should, per the system preferences. (I did sleep when I chose "Sleep" in the menus or closed it... It just wouldn't sleep on its own, while open.) What was extra frustrating was that it was intermittent... It would sleep on its own maybe 1/3 of the time, but other times it would NEVER go to sleep. I deleted PowerManagement.plist, reset the SMC, etc... No luck.
I took it to the "geniuses" at the Apple Store, and the guy took all of five minutes trying to diagnose the problem. When my MBP wouldn't sleep on its own, he promptly replaced it with a new one. That was nice, but I actually would have preferred that he diagnosed and fixed it. (I think the store was so swamped with people coming in for service that day that they were doing anything they could to close cases and get customers out of there ASAP.)
Now, sitting here with my 48-hour-old MBP, I still have the problem. The other one was so new that I had barely put anything on it yet. The only applications I had put on it were MS Office for Mac 2011, Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Flash Player. I've put Office and Flash Player on this one, but not yet Firefox or Chrome. That's it. No other customization or fancy business.
I looked into the Console just now, and I see the "Couldn'tfind any matches" entry popping up again and again. The last three seemed to pop upright around the time when my MBP should have gone to sleep on its own, but not down to the second, so it's hard to definitively point at that and say it's it for sure.

FCS stopped working (Can't get it to start in system preferences)
This morning FCS froze in a client app on a remote computer. We went to restart the java app but it said it could not connect to the server. We went onto the Xserve that FCS is installed on and saw that in the System Preferences pane, FCS was turned off. We have tried to start it again, but are continually getting the message, "Final Cut Server failed to start. See the server logs for more information." The client can only be opened on the Xserve with FCS installed on it and when the assets and productions load, there are no thumbnails and it won't connect to the proxies or original media. Anyone have any suggestions who have experienced this before? Any help would be appreciated.
-RiggsSounds to me like your database is broken somehow. For example, I've got this error when I accidently inserted some invalid data into FCS through the command line.
FCS won't start if the database has bad data in it.
You should have a backup from before this disaster; restore it and you should be up and running. That's pretty much the only fix. -
Mail keeps asking for password and icloud setting do not load in system preferences
Hi,
I have a mac mini server with mavericks, i have 2 iMacs as clients running mavericks too, when i use iMac (A) mail app and icloud work fine, them i take iMac (B) and mail app start asking for password , it just won't take the password, icloud do not load and cannot use anything else on system prferences because it locks system preferences, i need to force quit system prefrences , so I return to iMac (A) and i get same behaivor as iMac (B), i would appreciate your help for finding a solution for this.
All network users get the same behaivor, local users do not get this behaivor.
Thanks
HectorHector;
I have the same problem. The solution is to log into your client, open Keychain, run Keychain First Aid under file menu. If it fails to find your keychain, note the path, mount the disk that it is looking for, and rerun.
In short, you need to have the disk that your keychain is sitting on mounted. While your user account is mounted, Maveriks cannot match the reference path. Looking like a bug.
Example:
my folder sits on a second disk on server. It is properly setup in the mavericks server.
On the server, it is locally referred to as: /Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user. I can log in to mail on the server when I log in with my user name.
In the workgroup manager, the same location is referred to as:
afp://my_server.local/Users/my_user (or smb)
/Network/Servers/my_server.local/Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user
So this is the network path. So the client should be looking for that. But instead, it looks for the local disk, which is not mounted as such. In other words, it looks for:
/Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user/Library/Keychains
instead of
/Network/Servers/my_server.local/Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user/Library/Keychains
To eliminate this problem, you mount the volume on the client, so it can find. I will keep the editorial to myself, but this is not quality software.

Hi, hope someone can help, I am not Mac savvy. I had a system failure for some reason, and did a complete restore from a backup drive, and now no System Preferences. I had since also had the backup disk fail, so no other backups to work from. I am currently trying to restore these with a file salvage software.
The system runs fine, but, I cant change anything in the preferences. The PrefPane list is still there in the same file PreferencePanes. Thank You
System below
OSX Mavericks, Intel 24inch 2009, 8Gig Ram, 1 TB HDBut, If I boot it from the DVD using the R Button will that work?
No.
Will I Ihave to start from Snow Leopard?
Hopefully not.
Here's the thing: your Mac is older and I do not know if it has the updated firmware so you actually have a recovery partition (part of every OS since Snow Leopard - takes the place of install DVDs).
So, you can test that: choose restart from the File menu and when you hear the bong, immediately hit Command + R. If you get a grey screen with one window on it like this:
If you see this, choose to reinstall OS X and it should install the current system.
If your regular desktop appears, then you don't have a recovery and will need to start from the Snow leopard DVD (insert CD, choose restart and hold down C key) and then reinstall from there. You won't need Lion - just update Snow Leopard and then re-download Mavericks.

Feature requests for logic X...
hi. i was thinking it would be so so awesome if logic allowed you to put more than one soft synth on a channel, which would open up the creative possibilities of sound layering in a clutter free way. i and many others would love a midi arpeggiator pl
