System Preferences Folder

I've lost my System Preferences folder on my mac & need to know how to get it back.

Welcome!
This may not be the same problem at all - it's hard to tell from what the OP has posted so far!
In your case, if the application is still there but won't open, it would probably not help to use Pacifist to reinstall it.
It may be that your system needs little more than a bit of maintenance. Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities), and if that doesn't work, download a copy of YASU from www.versiontracker.com and set it to run all tasks, then leave the system alone for about 10 minutes while it runs and reboots. Reboot will take longer than usual and the system will appear slow after that for a few minutes, but that should fix it.
If it does not, download a copy of Preferential Treatment (again from versiontracker) and set it to scan both system-level and user-level properly lists. If it finds any that are problematic, let it remove them.
If none of the above helps, post back with details of what you did and what happened.

  • Move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder?

How do I move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder.  I unintentionally moved it.  My Mac blocks putting it back.  Suggestions?  Thanks!

Somehow I managed to delete my System Preferences shortly after upgrading, and was able to use the 10.4 one for a while until I applied the patch. Luckily, I already had Pacifist, and with your directions I was able to get close enough so that I could find the Applications folder within the ContentsofEssentialsSystemSoftwareGroup > ContentsofEssentials.pkg > Applications > SystemPreferences.app.
For that, I owe you the deepest gratitude and a gigantic THANK YOU. My System Preferences is now fully reinstalled and working wonderfully.
Pacifist might actually be worth purchasing.

  • TA20605 the system preferences folder is missing

Until step 9 everything works ok but at step 10 after I shoose ''all applications''  and locate the application folder, I can 't find the system preferences folder anywhere. What should i do?

Are you really using Mac OS X 10.1?  If not, please state the Mac OS X version.  If you select About This Mac (from the Apple menu), it should show the version of Mac OS X.
System Preferences is not a folder.  It is an application.  If it is not in the Applications folder, you may have accidentally deleted it, or maybe moved it, or maybe renamed it.

It may take a few tries to figure out why this is happening. I suggest you start with a simple step. Back up all data. Rebuild the mailbox.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Do you mean the System Preferences Panel? Under Accounts?
There is no systems preferences folder that I know of.
Does your home icon show up in Finder on the left under Places?
You need to better describe what the problem is.
I'm sorry, Yes I mean the system preference panel icon on my desktop. Under Accounts..
Only that it is the Accounts that has disappeared. I'm still not sure if I've described it accurately..

  • System preference folder in 10.9.5

Access it via your dock. Or go to the Apple and choose it there.

  • Strange System Preferences

I went to the system preferences folder to look at "Keyboard" preferences. I noticed that the icon was purple and when I double clicked it opened a game called"AstroSquid". I seems that all of the Apple Prefs. are purple and ask me the same question "do you want to open AstroSquid". Other than that, the computer seems to work OK.

The "System Folder" is your OS 9/Classic system, not OS X, which uses "System." (The "9" indicates OS 9, the "X" OS X.) The "Preferences" folder in "System Folder" contains files for Classic or OS 9 preferences, which apply only to OS 9 (if your Mac can boot into that OS) or to the Classic environment running "inside" OS X.
In either OS, you do not generally want to open these files but the "parent" that creates them. For instance, to change OS X keyboard prefs, open System Preferences from the blue Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder; choose the "Keyboard & Mouse" preference; & make your changes there. To change OS 9 or Classic keyboard options, you would open the "Keyboard" control panel & choose from its (more limited) options.
Tiger tries hard to associate every file with an application. Sometimes it gets a little confused, particularly with OS 9 files that would otherwise trigger a message in that OS that no application exists to open the file. That is probably what has happened with your purple icons. There isn't an easy way to correct this, & since it does no harm, it is best just to leave these files alone & modify them as explained above.

  • Trackpad preferences does not appear in the system preferences

    Hi.
My Macbook Pro has Snow Leopard version os x 10.6.8.
For any reason that I do not know, I am unable to use all the functionalities of the trackpad like rotate a picture etc.
Besides that, if I go to the System Preferences Folder, and select the Trackpad preferences pane, I find a clear window... all the options about trackpad functionalities disappeared and I do not know how to restore it.
Besides that, now my trackpad does not appear to have all functionalities operational. For example, in order to open a file, now I have to press twice the trackpad. Before, it only was necessary to tap twice the trackpad, without pressure on it.
Does anyone knows how to solve this?
    Thank you in advance,
    PA Sousa

    Hi yong88
Try to reset PRAM and PMU.
Try to boot from installer disk and press D for hardware diagnostic.
    Try to repair permission.
Go to system preference > International > Input menu > check only UK.
Install a fresh OS X might resolve the problem (back up your file first).
Check the connection from logic board to the keyboard and re-attached that and see how it works.
    Good Luck

  • Panther System Preferences now in Application ƒ after power glizh

G'day-10.3.9 on a G4 Sawtooth and had a recent power failure (Sydney) that affected my Time/Date + OSX warning to fix it pronto. Did so & ran DskWarrior as well. Next day noticed an apple icon file in my Applications ƒ labelled _System Preferences_.
My preference pane is still functional in the Dock but crickey, Iv'e got this problem.
The System/Library has got 1) System Configuration....finishing in .bundles
    2) Preferences Panes & System Profiler as likey repositories of Panther Sys. Prefs with own extns.
Can someone please tell me if I can rename & relocate these preferences without crashing my System. I'm in the process of backing up to Carbob Copy Cloner and wondering if I want this to get cloned to the wrtong file in the interim.
Here's a case that DskWarrior didn't pick up such a glitch as far as files go ey?
    Appreciate your help. Thanks

Ran 10.3.9 Combo updater & everything seems kosher except for the <System preferences>Folder remains in my Application Folder. Its dated April 05 (modified) & is 460kb.
Wonder now if I can safely delete it ??
Re Combo update, some of the /Library/Prefs were modified as well as some System/Library files, so assuming that exercise to be effective -thanks.
Q....Can anyone identify for me the name of the Panther Sys.Preference file please, so I can delete the rogue one in my Apps File!
    Thanks from Down Under

  • Systems Preferences

Where has my systems preference folder gone? It is not in my applications, nor does it come up when I type it in to spotlight. My disk utility folder is there so it should be somewhere on my hard drive. How can I find it and open it. It does not, of course, open when I click on the apple icon file nor on the systems preference icon in my dock (here it comes up with a question mark.
    Thanks for your help

if you can run system preferences from apple menu open it.
then run "activity monitor" application in your Utilities folder.
in activity monitor window, double click on "System Preferences". a new window should open open. click on "Open files and ports"
the top line shows where your system preferences is located.

  • My system preference is not working!!

I installed Magic Trackpad for my mouse a long time ago, and I recently deleted it. While I was following instructions, it said to delete a certain file in the system preference folder but then I deleted other things accidentally by dragging the folder. So I placed it back to where it belonged again and only delete the Magic Trackpad ones. But when I tried using system preference again, things started to look like this:
Some areas didn't seem to be working and only things like Displays or Desktop & Screen Saver were working.. Please help! Thank you very much!

This may be one of the rare occasions when you should repair the permissions of the startup volume in Disk Utility. If it doesn't work, see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • The screen resolution on my imac changes when I use mirror in system preferences monitor

When I turn on my projector before lion it would just project everything from my screen at it's resolution without having to make any settings. But now with lion I have purchased a VGA to mini cable to first connect, but when I turn on the projector I see the desktop image only so it is working but nothing el;se shows. To make it work I have to go into system preference folder and into monitor and click on mirror. What happens now is the screen resolution changes both on the imac and transfered through the projector. Going back into systems preference and try to change the screen resolution nothing changes. I have heard that I may have to download firmware for the cable????, or is there a patch for lion?????. Go back to the old imac with snow leapord and it work fine????. Please can somebody help.

Same answer as in your other thread. You need to update yosemite to 10.10.1. This was a known issue in 10.10.0.

  • System Preference Overload!!

I went into my system preferences folder and found JUST OVER 31,000 PREFERENCE FILES. I about fell off my chair. All of these "extra" preference files begin with 'cfx# and then a combination of 7 letters and number. Each are also 0 kb and seem to appear when I turn on the computer in the morning. The first date the abundance of preferences began was on April 20 when 1,764 preference files were added to the folder. I checked the few days following and 252 preference files were added each day. I skipped ahead to the past few days and it seems that 248 files were added each day. I cannot figure out where these files are coming from. I have also noticed that since I have deleted the files my Mac seems to be running a little faster. Has anyone heard of this happening and what can i do to stop it. I do not want to have to delete hundreds of preferences each day.

Ah, ok, not a problem; sorry about this:
An adminstrator account allows a user to modify everything on the machine at will (so you can read, write, modify, install programs and remove what you do not desire). Whilst OSX is very very stable, once you entered the correct admin password, you have free access to anywhere on the system without "let or hindrance" (this, of course mean, anyone else would - with the correct password access everything just like you).
Those cfx files appear to have something to do with root access (at least in my opinion). Quite rightly the files should not be there, and "root" means the very core of OSX.
If you go to "applications/utilities/activity monitor", open it and you see everything that is going on on your machine .
There processes such as "null", "user", "demon" (a little more info HERE ).
By the way, did you try to create a new administrator account to see what happens:
INFO HERE on how to set this up.
Another way might be to run disk utility (see related Apple article if need be *from DVD* if you cannot run it whilst OSX is runing.
    Please advise
NB: the only complete solution would be to save your work, and then conduct a complete erase and install. (Are your firewall settings correct?)

  • Accessing System Preferences Pane from Apple Menu

When I access the system preferences panel from the Apple Menu at the top left corner of my laptop computer, not all icons on the syetem preferences window will work correctly.  Some say they cannot find the application requested.  But when I create a shortcut for the system preferences folder from the applications folder on the bottom right hand corner of my screen, and open the system preferences folder from the shortcut I placed on my desktop, then all the icons on the system preferences folder appear to be working.
This indicates to me that there is some sort of an indexing problem when installing Mavericks on laptop computers, and that Mavericks Operating system is NOT QUITE READY FOR THE USER COMMUNITY.  I do hope this probelm is RESOLVED QUICKLY!

You can access System Preferences from Apple menu
When System Preferences is open you can fix its icon on the Dock as follows

  • System Preference lock always reverts to Unlocked

For some reason, when I shut down/restart, the Time Machine System Preference lock always reverts back to the unlocked position.
I periodically go and check it and it's always the same thing.

I, too, am having such issues.
    Running Leopard, MBP 2.33.
Since updating to Leopard, I cannot seem to lock my padlock... EVER!
e.g., I "get info" for some folder, and unlock the small padlock at the bottom right to modify the preferences. After entering admin password and unlocking the lock, I cannot "re-lock" the padlock.
Moreover, my System Preferences folder is ALWAYS UNLOCKED! I cannot change it.
In fact, if I switch to a "standard" user account, they are still unlocked!
Funny enought, I happen to be listening to music at the same time, and it continued to play while in the standard account.
Seriously wacky stuff going on with permissions.
    Any help? Anyone?
