As title say. I am trying to access my keyboard preferences via the system preferences and everytime i try to access this it freezes and say Not Responding.
I have tried other things in system preferences like mouse etc and seems to work.
Any Ideas?

Andy

Could you tell me what you meant by 'deleted system preference'? Thank you.

  • System Preferences freezes when trying to change background

    Hi,
Every time I try to change my background, system preferences freezes and I have to manually quit.
Can somebody tell me how to solve this?
    Thanks.

You are probably running 10.4.10 in as much as the MacBook pro's came out well after 10.4.1 was released. In any case try deleting the file com.apple.systempreferences.plist in your user/library/preferences folder.

  • System preferences freezes when trying to change the date

    Hey guys,
I've got a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.4.1. I'm having a problem with trying to change the time/date settings. Either going through the system preferences window or accessing it through clicking the clock in the top right and then 'open date & time', I get the spinning wheel and System Preferences crashes. Any ideas why?

  • ITunes freezes when trying to access "burning" tab in advanced preferences

iTunes freezes when trying to access "burning" tab in advanced preferences and also when attempting to hit burn cd button in lower left corner.

Thank you SO much!!! This is Exactly the problem I was having. I have spent untold hours in the last couple of days trying to resolve not only iTunes freezing up, but my network connectivity went bust as well. I like Blink so I'm undecided about whether to uninstall it yet, so I just disabled all of its firewall settings, and presto!... I can not only get my CD/DVD player to read and burn CD's, but iTunes and my computer remain functional. I got my computer to reconnect to the internet by doing a System Restore at a point prior to my trying to burn a CD. Thanks again so much. You saved my entire week!

  • Lion, system preferences freeze when I tried to change wall paper, how do I fix this?

lion, system preferences freezes when I tried to change wall paper, how do I fix this?

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • System preference freezes when i select icloud or mail accounts.

i migrated from mobile me to icloud and now the system preference freezes when i select icloud or mail accounts. The resources are 100% utilized. I also updated the software. Am using Lion OS X
Any Help , i need to get out of this.

No guarantees, what you might like to try the following:
    1. Sign out of your account
(If you are unable to do this because System Preferences has frozen, Force Quit System Preferences and try again)
    2. When prompted, opt to delete, contacts, calendars etc from your Mac.
(You are only deleting this data from your Mac, not from iCloud, the data will be reinstated when you log back in. If you need to check that the data is in iCloud before deleting it go to iCloud.com and check each section for data)
    3. Having logged out, check that the iCloud accounts along with their data have disappeared from the Mail, Address Book and iCal Applications.
(If necessary, delete the iCloud accounts from each of these application separately from each Applications Preferences)
    4. At this point it may be worth trying to log into iCloud from the System Preferences iCloud settings again, if this works, all well and good, if it doesn't continue to step 5.
    5. Open your User Library folder in the Finder. (When in the Finder, go to the Go menu, hold down the option key (alt) and choose Library when it appears in the Go menu)
    6. Navigate to Library > Application Support > iCloud and drag the iCloud folder to your desktop. (This action only copies the folder and will provide you with a back up)
    7. Select the iCloud folder again in Library > Application Support and drag it to the trash, enter your administrators password when prompted.
    8. Restart your computer.
    9. You should now be able to enter your ID and Password in system Preferences > iCloud and log into your account. Check the services you wish to use and once you are satisfied it's working as it should, trashh the iCloud folder you copied to your desktop earlier.

  • System Preference freezes when I want to change desktop background picture

My system preference freezes when I try to change my desktop background picture, any help, I tried disk utility repair, couldn't find the files to trash.

Login to the problematic account ensure that System Preferences is closed down.  Move the following file to trash:
    <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
but don't delete it from the trash yet, just in case you need to restore it.  Re-open System Preferences, it will re-create the file.  If all's well then, then you can empty the trash.

  • System preferences crash when trying to change network settings web proxy

I'm trying to add a web proxy under the network panel of system preferences. When I set up the password for the web proxy, the system preference panel crashes. I've successfully done this in the past. I'm not sure why the problem is occuring now.

First thing to do is download Preferential Treatment and check all preference files, while logged into that problematic account. Trash any that it finds broken/corrupt. Quit the associated apps and try System Preferences again. If PT doesn't find any, then move the usual plists to the Desktop (com.apple.systempreferences.plist amd com.apple.NetworkUtility/plist in ~/Library/Preferences/, including any such as com.apple.systempreferences.XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.plists in the ByHost folder and try System Preferences again.
If those steps don't fix things, you can either copy the ones from the new user to the corrupt user, a couple at a time, log out and back in, and see if any fix or break things. That's a slow and tedious process. Alternatively, log into the new account, reset prefs, and eventally delete the old one. There's no easy way except to routinely make a bootable backup/clone and when you experience these kinds of problems again, restore it, and move on.

  • System Pref's freeze when trying to access "Desktop & Screen Saver"

    Hi.
Every time I access the Desktop & Screen Saver category from the System Pref's window, the System Pref's freeze up (spinning beach ball of death appears) and I have to force quit.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks all.
    vanessa_b

Apparently, there's corruption somewhere. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ to the desktop, move the three or four com.apple.screensaver plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ to the desktop, log out and back in. Now try to set the Desktop & Screensaver PrefPane. Note that you'll have to reset some items in System Preferences. If that fixes the problem, then one or more of those plist files is the culprit. You have two options. Reset your System Prefs and throw away the files you moved to the desktop or replace the new ones with the ones you took out, one at a time, until you find the one causing the problem.

  • G5 freezes when trying to access across network

While trying to access my G5 from across a network from a MacBook Pro, the G5 immediately freezes upon clicking on it under the shared tab. I've been working this way for quite some time and this seems to be a new issue. Several hard drives are hooked up to the G5, so if I am working on the laptop I won't be able to access them because the computer freezes, the only way to reboot it is to hold the power button and wait for it to restart. Any idea why this is?

Hi John, and a warm welcome to the forums!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • System preferences freeze when try to set background image

    Hi all
On a MacBook Pro 13 (Mid 2012, 2.5 i5, 4GB) running 10.7.5 I can no longer change the desktop background. When I start the system preferences and select desktop and screensaver the ui loads and shows "loading pictures". After that the system preferences dialog freezes and can only be closed with a kill on activity monitor.
Where do I start so search?

  • System Preferences crashes when trying to sync to dotMac

I'm having a problem with sync services - both .Mac sync and iDisk syncing.
Attempts to change the synchronization from "manual" to "automatic" crashes System Preferences and the new setting is not remembered. The error that appears mentions dotmacsyncclient.
Attempts to turn on local iDisk also fail with a similar sync-related error.
This problem is recent for me. I've been wondering if it's related to either the 10.5.3 update or the transition from .Mac to MobileMe.

This might be a corrupted preferences problem. I'm not sure which preference file might be the problem (there seem to be several in use by .Mac), but you could experiment a bit. Basically, the idea is the remove your Sync preferences and have the system recreate them for you, thus removing a "bad" preferences file.
Your preferences information is stored in files in your home folder, in a sub-folder of Library called Preferences. Inside there, you'll see files with names like com.apple.Application.plist. There are also other preferences files in another sub-folder (within Library/Preferences) called ByHost. In there are machine-specific preferences.
It looks like Sync could use a few preferences files. On my system, I have these:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DotMacSync.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.DotMacSync.010e9530cb10.plist
but the second one seems to be the one primarily used. Note that the ~ represents your home folder in the above file path.
So, you could remove this file from your ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder (but save it, in case you want to put it back in place), then log out, log back in, and go to Preferences->.Mac->Sync. The system will then recreate that file.
Note that you may get a warning that the synchronization server already has your machine name listed -- that's ok, just say "use same name".

  • System Preference freezes when setting up Parental Controls

    Hi,
I am the Admin user of my MacBook Pro InteL C2D. I'm using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11. I had set up a 'Standard' Account on my laptop for my flatmate to use. But when I click on the Parental Controls of this standard account, the whole preference pane freezes. And it stays that way until I force quit it. What could be the problem?
I literally gone through every forum regarding this problem and almost everyone of them says to delete the preference file(s). So, I deleted the preference.plist and preference.account.plist file from Preferences folder in Library. No use.
So, I ultimately backed up my data and went for a complete 'Erase and Install'. Sure the computer is a lot faster now, but the above problem still persists!!
    Help please.
    Cheers.

Hi nite41, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when that completes...
    Trash this file...
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Any diff?

  • System Preferences Freezes When Attempting to Add New Printer

Running into an issue on a Mac Pro here. It crashed earlier today, and when I try to go into Print & Fax in control panels, it says "Loading" and then just pin wheels. There were several documents waiting to print at the time of the crash, but I can't get into the print cue now due to this. Is there a preference that could be corrupted?
    Thanks!
    R~

Try /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist, move it to your desktop and restart.

  • System Preferences freezes when I try to change Desktop Picture. Help!

don't know why this happens, but help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the screen saver preferences file may have been corrupted. Use the Finder's find command and search for "com.apple.screensaver". At least one file should be found that looks like com.apple.screensaver.xxxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxxx is a bunch of numbers and letters. Throw the file in the trash. If multiple such files are found, throw them all in the trash. Then restart. The file will be automatically regenerated with fresh, default settings. See if that fixes the issue.
