System Preferences Glitch: Some settings don't save!

There is a bug in the System Preferences where certain preferences just won't save. Anyone else have this problem?
I used the new screen capture in Quicktime and uploaded a video to show what's going wrong... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhzTKcO2aaM
Apple, please fix this?

LOL! Cute vid! Have you tried going to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist and drag that file to your desktop and relaunch System Preferences and test?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

In System Prefereneces, when I am in Desktop and Screen Saver, I am unable to remove folders. I can click the "-" and the folder appears to be gone, but when I close and then reopen System Preferences, and open Desktop and Screen Saver, the folder reappears in the list. I have tried deleting preferences "plist" but I am totally unable to remove the folders.

I've seen one other report like yours, and I think the issue is caused by a bug, but I don't know what triggers it.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Hello, In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. All is locked. How I can disable it?

Do you mean the check box isn't enabled?
Or you remove the check but it doesn't "stick"?
Or you remove the box but documents are stil getting locked?
That setting doesn't apply to other things in System Preferences, just apps that support AutoSave and Versions.  If you're having a problem with System Prefs, please clarify exactly what.

Several problems continuous since first installing Firefox. Personal google search settings don't save; remember me options on web sites like Facebook aren't remembered; Youtube and Flixy videos don't play despite removing/reinstalling/upgrading Firefox several times; upgraded the latest flash plugin today, but no difference, symptoms are black play box with youtube and white box with Flixy. Disbale AV and antimalware makes no difference either.

  • System preferences keep forgetting settings

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I've had to re-set my Notifications preferences three times because it keeps resetting them to the defaults. This last time I saw that several of my apps which had been listed in the Notifications preference pane were no longer listed. I'm having a similar problem with my computer name in the Sharing preferences, but that was happening in Mavericks as well and has been covered on these boards in other places (to no satisfactory solution.)
There doesn't seem to be an option to "Save settings" on many panes, so you have to trust when you go back to the main System Preferences window that your changes will have been applied, which wouldn't be an issue if I could trust that they had been applied!
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

Like Wildwood Guy, I have a similar problem.
In the system settings for the mouse, I have un-checked the “scroll direction: natural” box so many times.  I like to have the screen move UP, when I drag my finger DOWN on the mouse.  But, log out and the box defaults to being checked.
It would be nice if the system settings would REMAIN AS I SET THEM.
Geez.  If I didn’t know better, I’d think Apples OS X software was being written by some MS Windows goobers.
Ok, this update is being done about 10 minutes after the original post above.  I tried deleting ‘preference.plist’ and that seemed to work…. for now.  I rebooted the machine, then had a look at the system settings for the mouse.  The ‘scroll direction: natural’ box was still un-checked.
    We shall see.

  • IMac System Preferences Keyboard Shortcut Settings have disappeared ... ?

    Hi all,
Yesterday and again today, the Keyboard Shortcuts, System Preferences pain is empty on my Intel iMac running Lion/10.7. IE: the Settings options under Keyboard Preferences isn't populating any options, it's just empty.
This happens on and off throughout the day and no amount of waiting, restarting, opening/closing apps, re-syncing my aluminum Apple bluetooth keyboard, or checking for updates has helped.
Is anyone else having this issue and if so, is there a 'fix?' As I am typing this the settings started showing options once again, so the screenshot I was going to include is rather obsolete as far as helping give a better understanding of the issue, but I am including a shot of the Keyboard Settings pane when it is properly displaying items, just for app/preference clarification.
    Thanks in advance!
    ~ Krissi

    Hello Eric,
yes, restart is done after removing the user library. Still, the shortcuts are in the system preferences pane.
To explain why I'm after these files: I'm not trying to clear the settings, i'm actually trying to find the file, so i might safe/load them on different users.
My biggest bet did not work: ~/Library.
Is there any other location where I will find saves user settings?

  • Where are System preferences- Keyboard- Text settings saved?

I am trying to find the Settings of my System preferences->Keyboard->Text on my drive. I deleted my whole user library, and after reloading i still find my settings in the pane( so my conclusion is they are not in the ~/Library location. Does anyone have any idea where these settings are saved on the hard drive?

  • MobileMe in system preferences and Airport extreme don't recognize my password. The password and username are correct. I don't have any problem using ICloud and my Apple ID and account

When I try to connect to MobileMe in system preferences, it keeps saying that my password or username is incorrect. The same problem occurs on idisk.mac.com and when I try to connect to the hard disk connected to my AirPort Extreme. I don't have any problem to access my Apple ID account or ICloud. My password and username are corrected (I have one principal e-mail and two alternatives e-mails in my Apple ID). I don't how to solve it. The biggest problem is that I can't connect to the hard disk on the AirPort Extreme USB entrance and share files and backup.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • System Preferences glitch

Hey guys, when i got my macbook back for RSD i had to run system updater, when i did that everything was perfect. THe only downside that i noticed was that in my system preferences, the picture or Print&Fax is glitched to a picture of a light switch and ininteigible letters underneath it.
Is there anyone out there that can post a link to that graphic and tell me how to replace the glitch one?
    Thank you in advance!!!

    Trash the file: User->Library->Caches->com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Make sure to quit System Preferences before trashing the file. Put the file in the trash, empty and relaunch System Preferences.

  • System Preferences Crashes When "Desktop and Screen Saver" Selected

Help. My System Preferences crashes shortly after "Desktop and Screen Saver" is selected. I'm running 10.4.10 and the firmware is up to date. I have also repaired the permissions.

This issue is often caused by a plist file which is corrupt or contains an invalid setting. To fix this issue, create a new folder on the desktop and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ as the folder's path and drag everything with a name containing com.apple.screensaver to the folder on the desktop. If the issue persists, return to the ByHost folder, press the Command and Up keys simultaneously, and then move the file named com.apple.desktop.plist to the folder you created earlier. If everything works properly with both files in the folder you created, it is safe to throw it away.

  • Internet Options, LAN Settings don't save when using Run As

    Hi,
On Windows Server 2012 RTM with IE ESC off I can log on to the console of the server as UserA, I can open IE, open the Internet Options window, select the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, change a setting (eg specify a proxy server), click OK, and click
LAN Settings again to confirm my changes were saved.
However, if whilst logged on as UserA, I right-click the IE icon on the taskbar, select "Run as different user" and specify credentials for UserB instead, any changes I make in the LAN Settings window are forgotten the moment I click OK.
But, if I log on to the console of the server as UserB and open IE, the LAN Settings window does remember the changes I make, so this is not a user permissions or Group Policy issue.
Additionally, if I use Fiddler's "Tools, WinINET Options" menu to access the Internet Options window, I experience the same variations in behaviour I described above depending on whether Fiddler is run from the console user, or via "Run as different user".
Lastly, using Sysinternals's ProcMon, when the LAN Settings are saved correctly, I can see it is done via DllHost.exe (WinInetBroker) calling GetUrlCacheEntryInfoEx which in turn writes the "Internet Settings\Connections\DefaultConnectionSettings" value
to the registry. I can also see iexplore.exe writing the "Internet Settings\Connections\SavedLegacySettings" key. When attempting to change the LAN Settings when "Run as a different user", ProcMon still shows the successful write to the SavedLegacySettings
key but the other key is never written to, there isn't even an Access Denied.
A reference to "GetAppContainerRegistryLocation" in one of the ProcMon captured stack traces suggests this is behaviour new to Windows 8 as part of the "Metro"-style app isolation, however this is occuring in IE desktop mode and Fiddler (which is not a Metro
    app).
I believe this is either a bug that needs to be fixed to allow changes to save correctly or return an error when attempting to save the changes if they will be ignored. At the very least, this behaviour needs to be documented.
    Regards,
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
I have tested in my lab, and got same result with you. below is my test and results.
    1. log on with user1>> click "IE" and select "Run as different user">> type user2's credential >>change proxy, click "OK". open "internet option" again, the change was not saved.
    2. log on with user2, check proxy in IE, the change was not saved.
Then I tested on "Home Page", zone settings, , I found the changes can be saved.
I have done further test on other applications, such as notepad (enable/disable status base), calculator (View >> standard/scientific/programmer/statistics), the change can be save from "Run as different user".
since this is a behavior of IE, I suggest you submit a post in IE forum and IE experts may give you explanation on that.
    Thanks.

  • Print settings don't save

I am trying to print to a Zebra GK420d Label printer and firefox will not remember my paper size after one label is printed. Ideas on how to force a paper size and have it remember it?
I am on windows 7 and have changed my paper size for Printer Preference and Printer Properties and it will print correctly in notepad.

Just tried printing to another printer on our network and the settings definitely save from print job to print job. Ideas on why it would only be an issue with my Zebra GK420D label printer?

  • Dashboard settings don't save

when i mark widgets as being deactivated - then logout or restart my computer - all of my widgets are once again activated and i have to deactivate them by hand.
i want to save RAM and deactivate the ones i never use using the widget manager..

It could be that your dashboard preferences have become corrupt. Navigate to your home folder, then to Library -> Preferences. In there, look for com.apple.dashboard.plist. Trash that file, log out, and log back in. Then deactivate the widgets you don't want, log out, and log in to see if that worked.
Even if that doesn't work, keep this in mind: Just because a widget is shown in the bar at the bottom of the screen, doesn't mean it is taking up memory. The only time a widget can consume memory is when it is actually placed on the dashboard (either by clicking the icon in the bottom bar, or dragging it from the bottom bar to the Dashboard).

  • HT5957 APN settings don't save on my iPad after software update iOS 7.0.2

Since the software update to iOS 7.0.2 my iPad 2 will no longer save my carrier APN settings.  I have spoken to the carrier (virgin) and have tried to reset the APN to factory default then re-enter the APN settings.  Nothing appears to be working and virgin told me it is the fault of the apple software update.  Can anyone help or can Apple please fix this ASAP?
