System Preferences has disappeared

I cannot locate Preferences. I have done thorough search. I have lost track of my Restore disks. How can I get Preferences back?

I wanted to add a folder to share on my network and when I went to my system preferences I noticed that the sharing option is gone. Can anyone help me get it back?

it worked for me too, it's interesting that I discovered this just today when I was installing a VNC client to use from the iPhone and I couldn't find the Sharing preference pane to change the password...

  • System preferences icons disappeared!

My friend has a problem ... several icons from "System Preferences" simply disappeared one day. Now he doesn't have Accounts, Desktop & ScreenSaver and several others!
Does anyone have any idea why this happened and how to solve it?
Come on guys, he threatens to go back to HP/Vista if he doesn't solve this
    Thanx!

Before you get too drastic, try creating another user account (with admin privs), log into it and see if you have the same issue. If not, (everything is "normal" in the test account) copy the entire prefs folder from the test account to your account, overwriting "existing" folder. Then log back into your account and see what you got. Doing this will mean that you will have to reset all of your prefs but at least you will not have to reinstall. The thing is, if you do an "Archive and Install" that preserves your user prefs, you are very likely to have the same problem in the new system. So resetting your prefs is going to need to be done anyway. If you do have the same problem in the test account, that would indicate a "global" issue in which case a reinstall would be in order. Also, assuming that everything works in the test account, you could temporarily use that as your "main" account and delete the messed up account. Then you could create another account (from "test"), give that new account the same name and password as the original one, log back into that account and not have any ownership issues.

  • TS4291 My system preferences has only Mobile me available. No icloud. What to do?

My system preferences has only moblie me available, no icloud. when i click on mobile me I get the message "an error was returned for the server. please try again later".
How do I get the system preferences to change from mobile me to icloud?
Logging in to my icloud account works OK.
    Macbook pro OSX 10.6.8

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
You can set Snow Leopard up to access the email on an existing iCloud account which has been set up on a compliant device, and you may be able to sync iCal using an unsupported (and possibly unreliable) hack, but no other facilities will work. You cannot open an iCloud account on Snow Leopard.
This page outlines the limited use you can make of an existing iCloud account with Snow Leopard:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
To make full use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). (If you are currently pre-Snow Leopard you will have to upgrade to that to access the Mac App Store: it's available in the online Apple Store.)
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • I can't set up icloud on my older macbook. The systems preferences has only "mobile me". I have lots of files on this computer that I want to transfer.

How do you set up icloud on an older macbook? It is full of files that I want to keep. The system preferences menu does not have icloud. It has mobile me. Do I have to upgrade the operating system to, say, mountain lion? Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I want to give the old one to my granddaughter.

You have to update to Lion at least to get basic iCloud functions, and if you want full iCloud functions, then you need to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

  • Searching in System Preferences has stopped working

A few days ago I noticed that I couldn't search within System Preferences. I can type in the search box, but no autocomplete results are shown and no icons are highlighted. Searching is basically useless:
It was working before, so it must be something that I did. There has been another thread about the problem before, with no solution. Nothing else comes up in Google either. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have caused this?

I wouldn’t say the problem is in Mavericks, the other thread I found on it is from 2009. I’m surprised how rare this issue is – seems like something that should have an easy fix.

  • HT5527 System Preferences has no icloud icon?

drag it off the dock. then open the Main Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive and drag System preferences from there to the dock.

  • System Preference has question mark

System Preference does not open and shows a "?" in the dock icon.  It does not show up in Finder either.

First, drag the ? mark straight up and off the Dock. It should go, "poof".
Launch System Preferences from your Applications folder.
When it loads you should see a new SP icon in the Dock.
Press and hold down the icon then click Option / Keep In Dock.
If that didn't help, the Dock preferences may be corrupted.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences.
Move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
Then try launching SP and saving the icon to the Dock.

  • OS X 10.3 Mail Rules option in preferences has disappeared

Apply Rules option does nothing. Rules option missing in preferences window. Where did they go? I have many rules that are still functioning properly, but I can make no more nu rules because I cannot access the option.

Sounds like you have the complete Preferences toolbar closed on another selection.
Go to Mail > Preferences and at the top right corner of the Preferences window is a clear pill shaped button.
Selecting this button opens/closes the complete Preferences toolbar and the same applies to any window that includes a toolbar that has this clear pill shaped button.

  • My Accounts Folder in System Preferences has been deleted.

It's been a couple of months now that I have been without an account. I don't know how my Administrative name or user names have been deleted, but it has made it very difficult to go into disc utilities to correct my permissions, or to download anything. The reason is that I am being asked for my password that I used when I first set up my Apple. I have tried every combination imaginable, but keep getting the message that I entered invalid User Name or Password.
Because of this, I cannot do anything on Mac that might improve the performance. I have asked for help from Apple Support, but I was denied any help unless I pay a substantial fee. My AppleCare Agreement has expired and that is the reason I can't get help unless I pay a fee, which I can not afford.
If anyone has any answers as to how my Administrative name got deleted, I would appreciate your input. I don't even have a plus sign in the Accouts folder to add a User Name.

    Hi Miss Moo,
Could it be anything related to this, it can happen spontaneously also?

  • Mail preferences has disappeared how do I get it back

A couple of days ago my mail went crazy and most things suddenly dumped themselves in Junk.  I spent some time sorting it out and adding a lot of rules.  Yesterday I found I had missed a couple and wanted to add a rule or edit an existing one.  Click on Mail Preferences and nothing happens.  Was busy, went away, forgot about it.  Tried gain today.  Nothing.  Checked other Preferences eg Safari, Excel.  They're there.  What do I do now?

    Hey MingtheSiarmese,
Thanks for the question. Let’s try quitting the Mail application and restarting your computer. If you have trouble quitting the application, see this article for information on how to Force Quit:

  • The Energy Saver in System Preferences has no effect.

    Hi,
I have my Energy Saver preference set to turn off my monitor after 20 minutes of idle time.  But the display never goes off.
Energy Saver used to work, now it doesn't and I have no idea why not, or what changed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

Perhaps you have some process keeping it awake for some reason.  Have you installed any new stuff recently?
    Try smc and pram reset.
Open terminal and copy/paste the following line, hit return, post the results:
    pmset -g
Also post the files in the following places:
    your login items
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents (in your home directory)
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/StartupItems
And again in terminal the output from the following line (copy/pasteand hit reutrn):
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Maybe some of this info will indicate a possible culprit.

iCloud is available on Lion 10.7.2 or higher.
