System Preferences Loosing Keyboard Shortcuts
I have noticed that from time to the keyboard shortcuts I have enabeled(F9-F12 for the Dashboard and Expose) and the mighty mouse buttons set for dashboard and Expose all windows will revert to the defalt settings if unassigned. For the Fkeys this means they do nothing and the mouse reverts back to button 3 and 4. Can someone tell me what causes this, and how I can stop it, because while it dosnt cause me any major problems it is annoying.
I have this same problem. Hopefully someone will help us soon.
I was watching a DVD (MirrorMask) when my computer crashed. The whole top to bottom wipe thing happened and it told me I needed to hold the power button and restart. After restarting, however, I could no longer control the volume or brightness controls on the keyboard, use my eject key, and my apple remote won't work for those things either. I know these keys, as well as the remote, are all getting signals just fine because I can still use them to do various other things like refresh pages in internet explorer or wake the computer from Sleep mode. It's almost as though it doesn't believe it's a newer version mac with those features anymore.
I've tried messing around in the System Preferences as well. Checking the "Use F1 - F12 buttons to control hardware features" box does nothing to help the situation. Holding control, fn, alt, or option keys and pressing any of the keys merits no positive response either.

Xfce system tray/plugin keyboard shortcuts???
How can one add keyboard shortcuts in xfce4 to show up apps that are in xfce4-panel? For example, xfce4-notes-plugin-svn, xfce4-mixer-svn, xfce4-mount-plugin, etc. They are in the pane. Now when one wants to use them, then need to click on them. Another similar thing will be apps in system tray. To minimize or maximize them, you need to click on them. Is there a way to do this with keyboard.
Another question is abot adding apps in system tray. Many apps, e.g., aterm, adobe reader, etc., are not in the system tray. Any suggestion to overcome this problem.no hope yet

Toggle Play and Resume System Variables with Keyboard Shortcut
Hey Folks,
In many popular video applications (YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, etc), the Spacebar is used to Play (and then) Pause the movie and I want my project to stay consistent with this.
I'd like to have a single keyboard shortcut (maybe to a hidden button on a Master Slide) that,Plays or Pauses (depending on what is happening) a slide video (or the entire project really), and I want that shortcut to be the Spacebar.
I will be having slide videos (user clicks an Image to go to a slide video, not event video). Playbar will be visible during this time.
In trying to accomplish this, I see that cpCmndPause is an available System Variable. I would assume cpCmndResume is the counterpart to that, or is cpCmndPause=0 the counterpart?
Anyone have an idea how to accomplish this?
Thanks,
TomSpacebar cannot be assigned as a shortcut key. probably because it will be reclaimed by browser. The toggle part is easier.

Given that Firefox does not obey the System Preferences custom keyboard shortcuts, why does it still display those shortcuts in the menus, thereby incorrectly telling users that they will work?
This issue was raised 6 months ago, but the only posted answer did not explain why the menus reflect the shortcuts that Firefox doesn't obey.Outlines are discussed in a series of articles beginning with Creating an Outline in Chapter 5 of the Pages '09 User Guide. A similar set of articles, beginning with Creating Lists follows immediately.
Reading through the articles, I don't see any mention of a keyboard shortcut or menu item related to moving an item up or down in the list. A search through Pages '09's menus was also unproductive.
Apparently this 'essential function' is unsupported in Pages.
Feature requests should be made through Provide Pages Feedback, found in the Application menu (in Pages, the 'Pages' menu), where they'll go to and be read by Apple. Here you're posting to Pages users, who can help you use existing features, but have no direct influence on missing ones.
The Pages '09 User Guide, a searchable pdf document, is available for download via the Help menu in Pages.

Following is part of diagnostics information after crash. It is obvious a invalid address access error. Although I can't understant the root cause, but we can make some guess.

When crash, system seems be accessing the resource "Borderlands.icns" which belongs to application "Borderlands.app", so I guess it maybe a problem of that applcation, "MALLO_LARGE", maybe the icon is too large or broken? "Borderlands" is a game I installed before.
Recall another synptom, everytime I restart OS X, I can open Finder->Application, but once the icon of "Borderlands.app" is scrolled onto display, Finder quit!
Solution is simple, I delete that application in "Terminal". Then, everything recover! -
Feature Suggestion for Keyboard System Preferences - Modifier Keys
I recently picked up an iMac and it came with the new low-profile aluminum small keyboard -- without the keypad.
I really like the small keyboard except for one thing -- the placement of the fn and control keys. The larger keyboard has three modifier keys on the left side: Control, Option, Command. The small keyboard has four: fn, Control, Option, Command.
It is annoying to switch between keyboards where the control key is in a different spot on each one. Retraining my finger on a per-keyboard basis is hard.
Apple thoughtfully provided in System Preferences a Keyboard control panel and it thoughtfully provided a "Modifier Keys..." popup to allow you to reassign the modifer keys. A great feature.
The problem is: you can't use this to modify the behavior of the 'fn' key. It is apparently hardcoded.
If I could use the modifier keys dialog to change the 'fn' into a 'Control', then I could use this keyboard without swearing everytime I miss the control key.
Another feature that would be great would be if I could also have different bindings for the modifers on the left side versus the modifiers on the right. That would allow me to reassign one of the right side modifier keys (that I never use) to be an 'fn' key.I'm in the exact same boat as you...that Fn key is driving me nuts. I tried DoubleCommand and some other things as well, but the only thing that's coming close to what I want is a free download called "KeyRemap4MacBook."
Just go under the "Remap Fn Key" section and you can basically have it act as the Command key. (I actually always had my Command and Control keys swapped, so now both the Fn and Control keys now essentially act as the Command key.)
There are a few quirks I haven't figured out -- I can't seem to do Forward Delete -- but again, it's the only thing I've found so far that works. -
By default, on a mac keyboard F3 lets you see all the open apps and the such. However, I changed it so that I use those keys for keyboard shortcuts; But i'd like the normal F3 key to still work without me having to press FN.
rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button. -
How do I create a Keyboard Shortcut in Mail 3.1?
I use a CRM software call Daylite that has a plug-in (DMI) for Mail so they can transfer information between the two programs.
In order to connect to the program you must go to "File>Connect to Daylite" in Mail. The problem is there's no keyboard shortcut to make this connection.
Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut in Mail to achieve this?
Any assistance would be great.Hey, If this helps... <post edited by Host>
Go to System Preferences > Mouse & Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts
Scroll all the way down in the list - you should see some thing like "Application Keyboard Shortcuts" and a submenu of "All Applications"
Right beneath that, there is a plus button to add a keyboard shortcut, Click That Button
Select Mail from the application menu
Menu Title "Connect To Daylite" - make sure it's typed EXACTLY as it shows up in the menu, even punctuation...
Enter your shortcut and press the "add" button -
Application Keyboard Shortcuts...How to?
Hi...
I am new to the mac and I'm still learning mac's tricks. For now, I would like to open an Application using a keyboard shortcut.
I would like to be able to turn my computer on, and open skype -I know it sound silly but i don't want to put it in the dock (unless there was no other choice after all)- using a shortcut (command-S for example.
I saw a tutorial video that shows how to open System Preferences using a shortcut, so I thought I would like it to to the same with skype.
Could someone please tell me how to do that, if possible please? I would really really appreciate it.
THANKS!colonel007,
The only reason the trick http://www.apple.com/business/theater/#tutorial=customizingkeyboard here works is because its in the menu bar across the top of the screen. The shortcuts only work if you copy the command letter per letter. That is why you have to type the "..." after system preferences.
I don't know of a way to do it in leopard without the help of third party software, such as that listed above.

Keyboard Shortcut for comments
I have a question and something to share.
Turns out it's pretty easy to add a keyboard shortcut for
adding ColdFusion comments (mostly so that you don't have to click
on the comment dropdown and select the ColdFusion one, that's 2
clicks). You can add a keyboard shortcut to that Insert Comment
command. But by default it inserts HTML comments. So if you want it
to do something different you can modify this file: C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver
CS4\configuration\Objects\Text\Comment.js
The bad news is, I can't find a way to add a shortcut to
Remove Comment. Does anyone know how to do that?Jon
Not that I know of but you can make your own keyboard shortcuts for anything that is in a menu somewhere:
+System Preferences > Hardware > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts > Application Keyboard Shortcuts > All Applications > click the little plus sign under the window > Application: > Other > browse to Applications/iWork/Pages > Menu Title > Show Comments (type exactly including U&lc) > hit cmd shift c (or whatever you want)+
Since the shortcut works on the literal text, it will not toggle on and off. You will have to have another shortcut for +Hide Comments.+

Keyboard Shortcut for Comments Pane
Hi,
Discussion topic says it all - is there a shortcut for the "comments" pane? Searched the forums; didn't see a post for that, so if this a double post, just let me know!

Using Automator to change System Preference when opening an app
Hello everyone,
I have been using a Mac for a good 8 years now and I'm a happy user. I recently found out about Automator ('hey what is this little robot for?') and what it can do, yet I lack the knowledge of finding out what I must do to make a script to perform the following thing:
When I launch an app (FL Studio), I want the box checked next to 'Use F1 and F2 as standard function keys' in the Keyboard preferences pane in the System Preferences app.
When I close the same app (FL Studio), I want the box unchecked next to 'Use F1 and F2 as standard function keys' in the Keyboard preference pane in the System Preferences app.
I have found several other topics about this subject, however, those were about scripts when logging in to your computer, and not upon opening/closing an app. Please note that I am seeking for the setting to be changed when the app is opened and closed.
I hope you can help,
SanderThis kind of question comes up a lot - how to run a script when an application launches/quits.
The short answer is that it's not easy to do directly, unless the application itself supports launching scripts on startup/quit (hint: few do).
Fortunately, a little difference in thinking can give you the same effect.
Rather than trying to have your script trigger AFTER the app launches, rethink your process to a script that FIRST changes the preference, THEN launches the app. You get the same result but about 14 billion times easier to implement.
In this case, write a script to set the function key preference, then launch FL Studio. The script can then hang around to wait for the app to quit and reset the pref.
Furthermore, don't try to do this the human way (open System preferences, select Keyboard, check the box). You can set the preference directly via the defaults command line utility:
on run
do shell script "defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.keyboard.fnState 1"
tell application "FL Studio" to activate
end run
Resetting the preference is a little trickier since you need to detect when FL Studio has quit. You can do this with an idle() handler in your script that hangs around, periodically checking if the app is still running and then taking action:
on idle
tell application "System Events"
if (name of every application process) contains "FL Studio" then
-- app is still running, so come back and check later:
return 10
else
do shell script "defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.keyboard.fnState 0"
tell me to quit
end if
end tell
end idle
Putting these together in a Stay Open script should do much of what you want. -
[SOLVED] Custom Copy & Paste Keyboard Shortcuts in Gnome3
I'm looking for a way to make custom keyboard shortcuts in for the copy and paste functions. Specifically, I want F1 to be Copy. F2 to be Paste.
(In the future, I'd love to be able to do more, like Find, Cut, adding in frequently used text phrases via one keyboard combo ... in ANY application.)
Why? Because I use a different keyboard layout, Dvorak. I'm sure other layouts have similar problems. The Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are all of a sudden two handed operations. Slows me down. I need a non-mouse (I'm aware of the middle-click option), one handed operation solution.
There's a solution I found for Windows, AutoHotkey. Lets me do this. No Linux alternative as far as I was able to find. The options in the System Settings for Keyboard shortcuts do not include the Copy, Paste, etc functions. I also tried xclip. Works for copy. Just not paste. I can't get it to paste into any X app. I've used every variation of xclip -o I could. It appears that xclip isn't made for this. Nor do any of the other clipboard-like packages appear to be for it either.
Any suggestions?

xdotool
Nothing else needed. I just set up custom keyboard shortcuts in the Gnome3 system settings that utilize this command. "xdotool key ctrl+v" will paste. I have that set to F2. "xdotool key ctrl+c" set to F1.
It can type preset text as well, which I use a lot at work (not so much at home). " xdotool type "Hello world!" " -
Spaces doesn't recognize keyboard shortcuts!!
hey everyone.
I had my spaces setup to use F11 keyboard shortcut and dashboard is F12.
then yesterday.. spaces just stoped working.. dashboard still works. i have
disabled and enabled spaces again.. switched to F12.. still nothing. has anyone
had a similar problem that got figured out? dashboard works with F11 so it's
not a dead key.. I'm going to restart now..
robI have a similar problem on my PPC G5 only, my MBP (intel) works fine.
None of my F8 - F12 keys work, spaces is enabled, all keyboard shortcuts are assigned. I was on the phone to apple for a while working with a slightly confused (the reason may become apparent) tech who eventually solved my problem by resetting the PRAM, although, this only worked for about 2 hours.
The only thing we found was that in my preferences for keyboard shortcuts for expose, dashboard and spaces i have two options that i can set. One is for example F8, the other I can select any mouse button from Secondary through to Button 34. Which he didn't have on his computer. He could only select the F8 option...
Although i have discovered that the mouse options come from having a logitech wireless mouse (either MX revolution to the PPC or the Nano to my MBP..although the MBP keyboard short cuts still work).
So in summary, my keyboard shortcuts don't work on ONLY my PPC..rather annoying. -
Fix for System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts crash
This is not a question, but a solution to a problem that proved difficult to identify and fix for me and three Apple Support personnel, so I thought I should post it here in case others encounter the same issue. I spent a lot of time searching the web and Apple Discussions for this and related issues did not come up with any solutions.
After migrating from Snow Leopard on 2009 MacBook Pro to Yosemite on a new MBP using the Migration Assistant, things went surprisingly smoothly for the most part, until I opened the Keyboard pane of System Preferences. Then, clicking on the Shortcuts tab immediately caused System Preferences to crash, reproducibly.
Crash Reporter pointed loosely to a keyboard-related preference setting. But "com.apple.preference.keyboard" is the name of an OS process, not a .plist file. I searched the web to try to find out where Keyboard Shortcut settings are stored in Yosemite, and also for a possible way to reset the settings to default in Terminal (e.g. using the "defaults" routine), without success. (Apple Support was not happy that I had Terminal open when they shared my screen, and seemed never to have heard of this routine).
Process: System Preferences [948]
Application Specific Information:
objc_msgSend() selector name: retain
com.apple.preference.keyboard v.14.0 (Keyboard)
objc[948]: GC: forcing GC OFF because OBJC_DISABLE_GC is set
Repairing disk permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, zapping the PRAM, and trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences, some keyboard-related .plist files, and the system prefs and International prefs caches did not fix the problem. With Apple Support, we isolated the problem to my user account, as the same crash did not occur in a test account, or in another account migrated at the same time. Nevertheless, Apple's techs had me removing various menu items and programs also running in these accounts that I had deactivated (Sophos AntiVirus, Little Snitch, etc), and downloading and reinstalling Yosemite, which seemed unlikely to address the cause, given that my main user account was the only one affected.
Apple never had me check 3rd party preference panes (which I should have thought to do earlier myself). Opening and closing an older version of Default App ((RCDefaultApp 2.0.1), a free 3rd party utility, in the Preferences pane, transiently solved the problem. However, it recurred on removing it, and was not fixed by installing the latest release of this preference pane, nor did removing three other 3rd party preferences panes (MacFUSE, a Citrix app, and Flash Player).
Finally I went back to ~/Library/Preferences and looked for any files that had been modified around the time the problem transiently disappeared, and stumbled upon com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist. After viewing its contents with Property List Editor and finding this article, I thought that this file was likely the problem.
I logged into my root account, verified that Shortcuts worked fine there, and that this file changed with a change in Shortcut settings, and (after renaming the offender to save it as a backup), replaced the file in my main user account with a copy of the one from the root account.
I repaired permissions in the offending account, rebooted, and voilà - problem solved!
NB If you are in a similar situation, before trying this fix (at your own risk!), I strongly advise backing up your computer first, and saving a copy of the presumed offending file in case you have to put it back because of unforeseen consequences. You do not need to enable and use the root account; instead you could log in to a new administrator account, or another user account, verify that Shortcuts works fine there (it would not be a bad idea to set up any user-defined App Shortcuts you want there); and copy the file to a shared folder.
Then switch back into the offending account, go to your user Library/Preferences folder (~/Library/Preferences using Go To Folder in Finder), and replace com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist in that account with the one from the shared folder. You should then repair disk permissions afterwards and restart.
If it works, Shortcuts should open fine. Be sure to check each category in the left-hand panel of the Shortcuts panel (e.g. LaunchPad & Dock, Mission Control, etc.) for conflicts, and resolve those by disabling the offending duplicate key combination assignments (I had two, marked by yellow triangle alerts).Ward Clark wrote:
Thanks, V.K., for your comments.
I wrote: Enter is accepted, but it's treated the same as Return
not for me. it's both displayed and treated differently. I suspect what you are seeing is a byproduct of using a haxie such as Menu Master.
no it's not. it's treated differently.
In Leopard, Menu Master let me assign Command+Enter to Address Book > Edit Card. When I attempt the same using Keyboard Shortcuts, both Command+Return and Command+Enter are displayed as Command plus a "return arrow." After that, in Address Book, both Command+Return and Command+Enter invoke the "Edit Card" menu action.
not for me.
if you want to use those keys in the shortcuts use one of the many 3rd party app launchers. any one of them will let you do this: Qucisilver, Butler, Spark, Launchbar, ikeys, quickeys etc.
I've been using QuicKeys since the beginning of time, and I have some experience with Butler and LaunchBar. They're useful for what they do. But, as far as I know, none add keyboard shortcuts that are displayed directly in the menus. That display feature is what makes Menu Master and Systems Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts so attractive.
that's because Menu Master is a haxie. none of the other programs mentioned are. you want such functionality you are going have to use a haxie. personally - i stay away from them as they destabilize the system.
When I'm considering new shortcuts, I use KeyCue to display all current shortcuts in a single display. KeyCue now displays QuicKeys shortcuts in the same display, which is a big help.
