System preferences lost the top row

I have lost the top row from the System Prefernces window, the one that has your preferred icons and the 'show all' icon. How do I get it back?
Running system 10.3.9
Thanks.

No George, I was talking about 'Show/Hide Toolbar' item at the bottom of the 'View' menu of the 'System Preferences' application.
Nonetheless, I agree with your suggestion.
Cheers!

  • The buttons on the top row of my computer is there a way to tun off and on?

the buttons on the top row of my computer is there a way to tun off and on?

Click on the 'systems preferences' icon that is located on your dock ( it looks like the three little gears) and then click on 'keyboard'. Select the 'Use all F1, F2, Ect,' checkbox.

  • The top row of keys (fn keys) stuck on function only?

I was working normally on my Mac (Air with OS X Yosemite) and suddenly the top row of keys (such as volume, brightness etc.) stopped working normally. It acts as a function key only and I can't adjust volume, brightness etc. from there, which is annoying. I have checked I don't have the "use all F1, etc. keys as standard function keys" on in settings and I just don't know what to do.
    Does anyone knows the solution?
    Thank you

    Hello there, VeganB.
When one or more keys are not responding, the following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting your keyboard:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond - Apple Support
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • My slideshow doesn't show the pictures anymore - I can see them in the top row but they are not displayed in slideshow

I created a slideshow and when I went back to look it plays the music but not the pictures - I can see them in the top row but they don't show up even if I click on them - music still plays!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
are you able to view the photos in full size in the library?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

    PLEASE HELP

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Move System Preferences to the right of the Dock divider

I recently had to reinstall my system preferences b/c it stopped working for some reason. I would like to put it in my dock, but on the right side of the divider line next to the trash icon. How can I do this? I think this is where I had it before it stopped working. I know with folders I can simply drag and drop. Is there a different process for applications, specifically the system preferences?
    Thanks,
    Noah

Applications go to the left of the divider, files and folders to the right. If there is some particular preference you want, you can drag it to the right-hand part of the dock from the "PreferencePanes" folder in the "Library" folder in the "System" folder at the top level of your hard drive.
I don't keep System Preferences in the dock, but use the link in the Apple at the top left of the screen.

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • HT5624 I was prompted to update to ios7 so I did as usual. But this update has made my ipad a piece of junk. I am unable to access Siri, I can't read the faint print particularly those tiny letters on the top row which show the visited websites, etc.

I updated to iOS 7  last might after being prompted by Apple. This caused me to lose many useful features of my iPad2. First I find that Siri has disappeared. When I contacted Apple support, the guy who took my serial # and model # verified things on his end and said emphatically that I should have Siri, but could't help me find it. Another rep simply disconnected me after seeing that she was unable to help me with the problems. After wasting hours with these people and waiting several minutes for their promised supervisor to come online, I was again disconnected by them. My second major problem I wanted solved was the hard to read fine and faint print. I don't have good eyes and with iOS 7 on my iPad2 I am now unable to read the top row which has the list of websites in avery faint and fine print. I could read everything on my iPad until yesterday evening when I made the mistake of updating to iOS7. Till yesterday evening I loved my iPad but after that update to iOS 7 last night it is a piece of junk for me. Hope there is help somewhere out there to restore  Siri and other useful features of iOS 6 or get iOS6 back on my ipad So I can use it again. The chat with apple support has not helped at all as they themselves did not know that Problems like the ones I mentioned to them even existed with this iOS 7. I want my iOS 6 back!!!! CAN ANY ONE HELP !!!!! Also how can I reach anyone in Apple who is knowledgable and also has some authority to do something about it.

Outside of the contact number for that you've already used I don't know another way of direct contact. Here are some things that they may or may not of had you try that might help you. If you will go to the settings app and pick general on the right-hand side you will see accessibility. Within that you can adjust a text size make the text bowl you can also increase the contrast. You can also adjust the brightness and control panel.
As for Siri again in the settings app under general you should see Siri on the right-hand side with the switch to turn it on. If that is turned on and you're still having issues
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • The top row of the keyboard of my iPhone 4S, in the password screen, is not responding to my fingers. How do I fix this?

    iPhone 4S
    IOS 7.1.2
This problem occurred after a whole days use of the iPhone without any hitches. I first discovered the problem by unlocking the phone and then swiping to the password screen to find that the top row was not responding to my fingers at all. Because of this I could not type in my password to unlock my phone. I then tried to restore my phone but could not because it needed the phone to be unlocked. I then tried holding down the home and sleep button at the same time until it turned off and on again, but this did not fix the problem. I also tried switching on the Voice Over mode on and trying to unlock the phone through that but of course it didn't work. I have also left it overnight but I was still unable to unlock the phone the next day. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

    *UPDATE*
I have been able to use the Zoom function to zoom in and the keys on the top row no longer are in the non-responsive strip of area.

  • Only the top row of buttons works on the aluminun wireless keyboard

After returning my first wireless keyboard for not pairing with my iMac (which has all the right tech specs) I exchanged it for a new one. Initially, I was able to type letters and numbers only and many of the keys were not doing the task they were supposed to--the F12 keys ejected CDs and the eject button did nothing. I went to the Apple icon and downloaded all of the new updates that showed up, restarted my computer and then suddenly, the eject button worked! But, when I tried to type letters and numbers, nothing happened. My computer recognizes it and the top row of buttons works just fine.

the same has happend to me, it's a new wireless keyboard, and from the moment i paired them only the to row (f1,f2....eject) buttons are working.
    what am i to do

It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad.  You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud.  At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8).   You can purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store for $19.99.  After upgrading you will see iCloud in System Preferences.  This guide explains how to sync your Mac with iCloud after upgrading: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html.
Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud.  You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc.  You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

  • I'm typing dates across the top row. I want the date to be 12/13 and the program changes it to Dec. 13. It is making me mad. How do I get it to stop doing the change? I want a numerical number.

How do I get the numbers program to type a numerical date across the top row? It wants to change it to Dec. 13 instead of 12/13.

    Amy,
I hope that you can forgive Numbers for converting the date you enter as 12/13 into the default format of "December 13, 2011", one that is popular with many users.
You can change to any of the supported date formats by using the Cells Inspector, Date and Time options.
Select the top row of cells and use the inspector to set the format. You may do this before or after making the entries.

Yes that makes sense, however have you updated it at My Apple ID before trying to change it in your system preferences > iCloud settings, you must do that first.
