You might give VueScan a try. It should work with your scanner. There's a demo version that you can use initially.

I have just installed PE13 on a new Mac. When I try to open photos it crashes. Help please.

If you haven't already done so, then try closing the Message app via the taskbar and see if it works when you re-open the app : from the iPad's home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Message app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why dosen't the system preferences work on my Mac?

  • My laptop died last night and the date and time was set for 1/1/2000. I went to change the date and time and cannot. For some reason when i pull up system preferences it will not load date and time but will load other stuff. Please help.

Last night my laptop died and the time and date was reset. I cannot acess date and time preferences to change it and my laptop is acting really weird. My CD drive is broken so there are no options to put in a cd. Please someone help i need my laptop for school and cannot afford another.

Many system actions will misbehave, given an inaccurate date. Resetting the NVRAM and / or SMC will not fix it, and if the system has a preposterous date you may not be able to open System Preferences to correct it. This dilemma may or may not be addressed in a future OS X update.
If you cannot open System Preferences you can reset your system date and time using Terminal.
Please read everything that follows before proceeding. Write them down if necessary because the effects of setting a preposterous system date are unpredictable.
Quit System Preferences, force quit if necessary: OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Open Terminal - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this
You can find Terminal by using the Finder's Go menu and choosing Utilities, then double-click the Terminal icon.
At the prompt, you will be typing a command resembling the following:
    sudo date mmddhhnnyyyy
... but you must substitute the actual date and time in the command that corresponds to the date format used for your location. In other words if your custom is to use a date like 8 February 2014 then reverse the mm and dd values.
Substitute numerals in the above command according to the following:
    mm = month
    dd = date
hh = hour (24 hour format)
nn = minutes past the hour
    yyyy = year
Each of those values must be two digits except for the year which can be two or four digits. As an example if the current date and time is February 8, 2014 at 9 PM your command will be the following:
    sudo date 020821002014
    or
    sudo date 0208210014
Either one will work. If you enter nonsensical values the system will attempt to parse the entry correctly.
To recover from your inability to use System Preferences to set the date and time, the value entered does not have to be precise, it just has to be approximate.
Enter that command using the actual time and date for your location and in the appropriate format, then press the Return key. Terminal will ask for your Admin Password - the same one you use when you log in to your Mac. Type it and then press the Return key. What you type will not appear, not even with •••• characters.
To determine if your change was effective just type the date command and press the Return key. Terminal will reply with the date and time. If it appears correct and in the correct format, you should be able to open System Preferences > Date & Time once again. Selecting the "Set time and date automatically" and choosing an appropriate time server will adjust your Mac's system clock to the precise time.

  • Mac OS X Server 4.0: User & Group Accounts

I've bind Mac OS X server to AD, and I can see AD Users and Group accounts.  It seems that all other services such as Profile Manager requires Open Directory to run.  With Open Directory running, could I continue to use AD accounts instead -without having to recreate the wheel of a whole new set user accounts and  groups?  -So really assign AD accounts or groups to Server services.
    Thanks in advance!

You should not have to do anything the user/group import should be automatic and you should not have to manually create any accounts and it does onging syncs automatically but I do not know how often.
Once you are install and connect to profile manager all the accounts should show up just by clinking on users or the groups icons and they will work with that. You should not need to mess with them in the actual server application Although I would assume the other services all ink into the OD directory I don't know exactly how services like email, file sharing or VPN work as we have other more full featured better scaling services for that like MS Exchange for email/calendar and Cisco VPN.
We are only using OD, Profile Manager and Software Update.
Just a note I am using Server 3.2 on OS 10.9.5 if you are using Server 4.X your mileage will probably vary slightly as I am not sure what the areas of major change are.

  • Music CD won't read on my iMac but will on my husbands. I've looked in system preferences and it is set to open music cd in iTunes. What else do I need to do?

My iMac spits out two, new CD's I purchased today that I'd like to add into iTunes. They will play on my hubby's iMac (his is newer but same 10.8.6). Under help it recommended checking CD/DVD settings which I did. Any other ideas? Evidently my system has a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-875 (assuming I have that right for what also plays the CD's).
Thanks for any help y'all can provide.

NOt an iPhoto issue - either a bad CD or a bad Superdrive on your computer - no way for us to tell  try the CD in a different computer

  • I am trying to activate root account on my MAC.  The directions I've seen do not match what is in System Preference for Accounts or Users

I am trying to activate the root account on my new Mac Book Pro.  The instructions that I have found do not match what I have in System Preferences.  What is the process when using Users and Groups.  When I click on Join the Network Account Server- Open Directory Utility I don't see a option to  activate root user as the instructions say at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528
    OS X Lion
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
    Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.

Do you mean you cannot select "Enable Root User" from the "Edit" menu as shown below?
Why do you think you need to enable the root user? I've never needed it in the history of OS X.

  • I cannot get onto my iCloud to manage my storage, it will not let me access iCloud from my system preferences

I am trying to get onto my iCloud account to renew my storage for the year, but I cannot access it.  When I go to System Preferences and click MobileMe, I get an error message that says I cannot connect to the server.  Is there another way to change my storage plan?
    Thanks!

You can only pay to continue your free extra storage from System Preferences on a compliant Mac or from Settings on an iOS5/6 device. If you cannot access either of these then I'm afraid your choices are to go to http://icloud.com and delete as much data as possible to bring yourself below 5GB (assuming you are indeed over it) or to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion - you have less than a day to do this, which doesn't make it an advisable course of action.
If you decide to upgrade, what you can do depends on your Mac's specifications. If you are on Leopard you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (Intel Mac required).
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
    and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

Thanks, I can't live without Photoshop

That message means that the programs are crashing for some reason. I can't speak for Photoshop, but for System Preferences you may have a non-Apple screen saver that is causing the crash when the Desktop & Screen Saver pref pane tries to load. If so, go to ~/Library/Screen Savers (~ means your home folder) and remove anything you see. You can always add them back later.
If that doesn't help, go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete these files:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist
Then open the "ByHost" folder in the same location and delete anything starting with
    com.apple.screensaver
    Hope that helps.

  • I guess I didn't explaine that I have a healthy operating Windows 8 Boot camp partition on my hard drive. When I upgraded to Mavericks I am no long able to access the bootcamp partition from the disk icon in system preferences; the Windows 8 works fine.

On both Mini Mac and iMac 27" I am no longer able to utalize the Startup Disk icon in System Preferences; the Windows 8 on Bootcamp partition works fine if I close the Mavericks OX and select the Windows partition at bootup from the hard drive. My question is why don't the icon in System Prederences work anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks. Also, Users & Groups, Printers & Scanners icons no longer work either.

  • Cant find expose and spaces in system preferences

I cant seem ti find "expose and spaces" in system preferences.  Can anybody help please?

Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
If you upgraded from Snow Lepoard OS 10.6.x that had Exposé and Space, then those two have been integrated into Mission Control in Lion OS 10.7.x. You can learn more in the Apple KB article Mac 101: Mission Control. Mission Control is in System Preferences. Another source of info about Mission Control, Exposé and Spaces is from the Help menu in the Finder. Just type any one of those elements in the search box and you should get a few articles that are connected to each other.

  • System Preferences Folder

I've lost my System Preferences folder on my mac & need to know how to get it back.

    Welcome!
This may not be the same problem at all - it's hard to tell from what the OP has posted so far!
In your case, if the application is still there but won't open, it would probably not help to use Pacifist to reinstall it.
It may be that your system needs little more than a bit of maintenance. Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities), and if that doesn't work, download a copy of YASU from www.versiontracker.com and set it to run all tasks, then leave the system alone for about 10 minutes while it runs and reboots. Reboot will take longer than usual and the system will appear slow after that for a few minutes, but that should fix it.
If it does not, download a copy of Preferential Treatment (again from versiontracker) and set it to scan both system-level and user-level properly lists. If it finds any that are problematic, let it remove them.
If none of the above helps, post back with details of what you did and what happened.
