System Preferences Mystery

Hello
I would like to pass this little bit of info on regarding the Sys Preferences.
Last night when trying to open system preferences from the apple logo in the top left corner It would not open.
1.. I did a repair permissions
2.. I did a log out and came in on my test profile and still nothing
3.. I Rebooted and still could open. After reading on the discussion forums there was all sort of remedys and all sort of problems.
4..I have a cloned#2 hard drive so I erased the troubled #1drive and backed up into there.
I could open the system prefs then.
Well I thought I may as well run diskwarrior on my newly backed up #1drive. After restarting I could not open the sys prefs.
5.. I called applecare this morning and explained all that I had done. He Suggested I go into the Applications folder and try to open from the System Prefs. Apps.
Well it opened and when I went back to the apple logo and tried to open it opened with out a hitch.
All I can say is I should have tried opening from the application folder first I reall learned my lesson and shows a person should always go to the simple things first. I thought I was doing the right procedure in the beginning, but I sure got sidetracked.
My system had been opering fine and the last update 10.4.10 was done last month. I could not find any crashes in the console log either and I had checked that because of what I read on the forum.
Anyways if your having a problem with sys Prefs opening in the apple logo you may want to give this try and might save you work.
If some one out there can explain what could have happened I would sure appreciate it.
Thank You
Dcik

Hello Templeton
Your Answer:
This is usually caused by a corrupt Launch Services cache file which can be deleted from Hard drive/Library/Caches and then reboot.
Would I delete all the caches? I just looked in the library there is 14 files and two named Com.apple.launchservices-014504.csstore andCom.apple.launchservices- 0140.csstore.
1.. Can you explain these or tell where to read about these cache files?
2.. Are the Cache files in the library removed when I go to Safari and empty cache files?
3.. If I manually delete cache files will they rebuild during a reboot?
4.. As you can see there is two of these files on the computer I was having a problem. Now on my other computer iMac there is seven.
5. Why are there different amounts of cache files in different computers.
Thank You
Dcik

  • System Preferences won't launch from Apple menu in Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Hello there,
I recently upgraded to 10.6 and then went back to 10.5.5 in a few hours.
When doing so, I chose to save a folder called "Previous System", as the Installer gave me this option.
I've upgraded to 10.5.8 via Software Update, after prior 10.5.5 installation through the DVD.
At some point, I tried to launch the System Preferences through Apple menu and got the familiar message: "The application quit unexpectedly, etc.". Since then it's a recurrent problem. It's been 3 days.
However, it does open from the dock icon.
I still have the "Previous System" folder on my disk. I've moved a few things from it to my Library (i.e. some minor applications like Skype, some Desktop items like documents and folders, some photos, music, etc.). I've pretty much started from scratch with everything else - Finder preferences, Wacom tablet driver, etc.
Any clues? I've seen someone had the same problem with a downgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.4, but it's still a mystery as well.
    Thanks in advance!

Try repairing permissions from Disk utilities...
Hey iyacyas, thanks for suggesting the disk permissions repair. I tried this, but it didn't work out.
I'm far from understanding any of this, but I tried to figure somethings out from the Report the crash sends to Apple and I noticed that it's trying to launch the "System Preferences" from the folder "Previous Systems"… gee!
Here it goes, in their own words:
    Path: /Previous Systems.localized/2010-01-17_1147/Applications/SystemPreferences.app/Contents/M acOS/System Preferences
Anyone has any ideas how could I fix this? I mean, "tell" the Apple Menu to search for the System Preferences inside my ACTUAL Applications folder?
    Thanks!

  • AppleTalk disabled in System Preferences

I have been computing and printing successfully for a long time. I connect my G3, running OS 10..3.9, with my Apple Select 360 through an Asanté Talk box. But now, returning after ten days absence, I can't print. I am getting the error message: "AppleTalk is disabled in System Preferences"
In System Prefs/Network: no enabler for AppleTalk is to be found.
I have tried Directory Access Utility: Appletalk is "enabled"
I've tried the trick of unplugging the Asanté for a minute, then reconnecting.
    Big Mystery. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Jim,
You didn't give all the detail I need, so I am making assumptions here. Just tell me if I'm wrong. I guess you are printing via direct ethernet connection from laptop to Asante box?
OS X doesn't consider ethernet to be ON until it has a valid IP address. Go to Network Prefs > Show built-in ethernet > TCP/IP tab. Set Configure manually and enter a local IP address (example 192.168.5.5). (An IP address of 169.x.x.x means self-assigned and isn't valid) Now go to the appletalk Tab and turn on appletalk.
Now Add the printer. (You may also have to power Off/On the printer and Asante to get them rcognized by the computer.)

  • Some System Settings Mysteriously Reset

    Hey all,
I've recently started experiencing some mysterious resetting of some of my system preferences after a reboot. I take my MBP to and from work and shut it down when moving back and forth most times. What I've encountered is a subset of my preferences getting reset to default values, but not every time. Here's what I notice that gets reset:
Appearance: Appearance, Scroll Arrows, Use Smooth Scrolling
Keyboard: key repeat rate, delay until repeat and use F1 et al as standard fn keys
    Trackpad: tracking speed, scrolling speed
    Mouse: tracking speed
There may be others that get reset but I just haven't noticed and still others that would be reset if I actually changed them. There are also many that I have changed that do not get reset.
Does anyone have any ideas how this happens or and suggestions on how to troubleshoot?
    Thanks for your help, Jim

Thanks for the suggestion -- it may be a while before I decide the problem has been fixed though. Hopefully a couple weeks from now I'll suddenly realize "Hey, I haven't had my settings reset on my in a while!"
    Cheers!

Still can't sign into icloud in system preferences after many calls with support.  Beyond frustrated!

Do you have 2-step verification on for your Apple ID?  I may have a solution.
When I upgraded to Yosemite and subsequently updated my Apple ID, I would get errors when I tried to sign into iMessage and FaceTime using my apple ID (and my new password), I similarly was not able to sign in.  On FaceTime, I would get errors like "unable to sign in at this time" or some times just nothing at all (the spinning 'processing' graphic would grind away until it presumably just timed out).
Turns out that I enabled 2-step notification on for my Apple ID (totally forgot about it, I set it up a couple years ago), and apparently the regular Apple ID password that you choose is not usable when you try to log in to iMessage or FaceTime through the programs themselves (intuitively, this makes sense since these programs do not have a way to prompt you for the "2nd step" code).
To solve, you have to log in to your Apple ID online (appleid.apple.com or whatever), and look for the option to "Generate App-Specific Passwords".  These are unique, random passwords which are made to work around issues like these since they can be used in iMessage or FaceTime or what not.  This is the same idea as to what you have to do to log into gmail on your iPhone if you have Google 2-step verification on.
This solved my issue (after lots of swearing and hair pulling!).  Would have been nice if a I got some sort of warning when updating my Apple ID password that "Hey, you have 2-step enabled.  Go make some app-specific passwords or you will lose 5 hours of your life trying to solve this mystery"
    Hopefully this may solve yours

  • System preferences will not load

Hello, I am new to all of this and my expert is traveling. I read through this forum and saw some others had problems with system preferences. My problem is that I can not get system preferences to load when I click on it. I have tried the icon in the dock, the item in the blue Apple menu and even in the applications folder. When I click on any of these, nothing happens. This problem just started. I have not loaded any new software or updates in quite some time. Any ideas about how I can solve this problem? I am using a Powerbook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.9. Thank you!

"/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences: launch failed with error code -2857 (cfragCFragRsrcErr) for application /Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences\n"
Wow, that's bizarre. "cfragCFragRsrcErr" means that the 'cfrg' resource could not be loaded, but that makes no sense whatsoever. Well, it makes sense in that System Preferences.app isn't a Code Fragment Manager application, but a native Mach-O executable. (Applications in OS 9 and prior used the "Code Fragment Manager" executable format, which involved a single file executable that had both a resource fork and a data fork. See this image for an example. In the resource fork would be the 'cfrg' resource which would define the various sections of executable code found in the data fork of the executable.)
Apple hasn't created any CFM applications in years; as you could see, I had to dig up Microsoft Word to find an example of that format. Instead, in OS X, most applications aren't single "flat" files, but are bundles or packages, which appear as a single file, but are a folder which contains the many individual files that make up the app.
It's a mystery to me why you'd be getting that kind of an error on an application that's not CFM. It would help if you ran the two commands I gave earlier and post the output you get. you can copy and paste one line at a time into the Terminal application and hit return.
    <pre>
    ls -la "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"
    file "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"</pre>
The first command is attempting to get information about the executable file, the second command attempts to look at the internal contents of the file and see if it matches a known recognized type of file. I get the following:
    MacBookPro:~ mdouma46$ ls -la "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 root wheel 250884 Apr 25 04:05 /Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences

  • System preferences disappeared

My son's Imac has mysteriously lost its ability to open System preferences. I tried some of the solutions suggested in previous posts(trashing some preferences, etc) but without success . When I asked my son (age 11) if he did anything to cause this, he said he changed some passwords. Of course, I can't access his passwords without System preferences. What should I do ?

It has been reported that DiskWarrior has solved the problem in some cases
If you have trouble opening any system preferences. try this....
    • Try logging on to OS X using another admin account. If the same problem exists, it is a system level problem..Try repairing permissions (from Disk Utility). Then log out out/login or restart and test the system preference again.

where - xxx is an alphanumeric string

    (3) Empty the Trash.
    (4) Log out/Log in or restart. If this did not help, go to ~/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem

    /library/caches,
    /system/library/caches,
    ~/library/caches within their home folders.
You may need to log in as root to accomplish this. Then reboot and test.
    Next step... ....
    - Quit System Preferences, if it is open.
       - Navigate to ~/Library ..... drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
       - Restart and test your applications.
       - If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
Navigate to ~/Library/Fonts ....... drag this folder to the desktop.
       - Restart and test your applications.
       - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    • If that doesn't help, try disconnecting all peripheral devices except for monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and resetting the PRAM, then test before reconnecting any peripherals.

  • System Preferences Lock

I +do not+ have the "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" preference checked, and +do not+ want to have to unlock System Preference panes each time I use them. Yet, on three of my computers, after each restart, the panes are locked (whether I left them locked or unlocked)!
I know that a few System Preferences panes are always locked after a restart of the OS or of System Preferences, I'm not talking about those. But I believe the other panes with locks are supposed to retain their locked/unlocked status through quitting and opening System Preferences, and through OS restarts, at least for administrator users. (I also know that the lock status is global, that unlocking one unlocks them all.)
I am an administrator, and always login to these computers as such. All my computers are running Snow Leopard (10.6.5). I have four computers, three exhibit this behavior, one does not (the one that does not works as expected, leaving panes unlocked after a restart, according to the Security: General preference setting).
I have upgraded two of the problem computers from Leopard, the third problem computer was purchased with Snow Leopard, but I migrated its files from a previous Leopard installation. On the latter, I clean-installed a fresh OS on a second drive, and the problem +does not+ exist for that OS installation. I also created a temporary user account, on the problem OS, and the problem persisted for that temporary account (so we know it's not a user-level issue, right?).
The one computer that works as expected was purchased with Snow Leopard, but its files were also migrated from a previous Leopard installation. So no clue there.
And lastly, the three "problem" computers seem to retain the lock/unlock status through restarts of the System Preferences app, just not OS restarts. By that I mean: I'll startup the computer, and all the panes are locked. I'll unlock them and quit System Preferences. On re-opening System Preferences, the panes are still unlocked (except the panes that are always locked, like Security). The unlocked panes remain unlocked through any number of System Preferences quits and launches. But after the computer is shut down or restarted, all the panes revert to locked. If I turn on "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane", then all panes are re-locked after restarts of both the OS and System Preferences, as expected. So in other words, the "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" setting works as expected +in between+ OS restarts, just not right after an OS restart.
I suspect there is some sort of remanent that was migrated from the previous OS installation that is causing this misbehavior, but repairing permissions has not solved the problem. Nor has replacing System Preferences preference files (the ones I can find, anyway). This security setting must be buried deep, as I expect it would be, and I cannot find the stubborn file where it is stored that seems to defy and ignore the "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" setting, at least after a restart.
    So, my questions:
Does anyone know exactly what the intended behavior of these locks actually is? Through restarts of the OS? Through restarts of System Preferences? For administrators? For non-administrators? Is there any Apple documentation that explains this clearly, and in detail?
If the intended behavior is for the unlocked locks to stay unlocked through an OS restart for administrators (which is how I believe it's supposed to work), how can I restore this behavior on the machines that don't adhere to that?
And why the mystery: that the behavior works as expected once the lock is first unlocked, throughout that session, but not if the computer has been restarted?!? Is this a cache issue? (If so, it's survived numerous Cocktail cache cleanings.)
    Help!

    OK:
    1) I checked "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane".
    2) I restarted the computer.
All System Preferences panes were locked, as expected.
"Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" was still checked.
    3) I unchecked "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane".
    4) I restarted the computer.
All System Preferences panes were still locked.
"Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" was still unchecked.
    5) I unlocked the Energy Saver preference pane.
    6) I restarted the computer.
All System Preferences panes were re-locked.
"Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" was still unchecked.
Each time I logged in as an administrator.
I've repeated this exercise many times, on different computers with the same results. (Except for one of my computers, which stays unlocked, as it's set to do.)
FYI: It's the Energy Saver pane that I need to keep unlocked. And that's for a stupid work-around I have to do to reset its "Wake for network access" pref constantly. Here's why:
I'm using a somewhat complicated workaround to defeat Snow Leopard's new Wake On Demand feature, which I don't want. I need to be able to wake my computers with a magic packet, which doesn't work with "Wake for network access" off. I don't want my computers to wake every few hours to register with my Time Capsule's proxy server (which is part of the Wake On Demand "feature"). I just want to use the magic packet as I was able to do with Leopard. So I have to turn on "Wake for network access" just before the computer sleeps, but right after it would have registered with Time Capsule's sleep proxy server. I use some SleepWatcher scripts to accomplish this feat. The computer then wakes for the packet, but Time Capsule doesn't broadcast the computer as available. But my SleepWatcher scripts don't work if the **** Energy Saver preference pane is locked, because my SleepWatcher scripts can't manipulate the "Wake for network access" setting when it is.
So if you know a better solution for this "Wake On Demand" problem than what I'm doing, I wouldn't care so much about the locked Sys Pref's. Like:
    1) How to defeat the entire sleep proxy server in Time Capsule, or
    2) How to keep the computer from registering itself with Time Capsule's sleep proxy server without jumping though the hoops I am now, or
    3) How to programmatically manipulate the "Wake for network access" Energy Saver pref while its lock is enabled, or
    4) How to write a terminal command that circumvents manual administrator authentication.
By #4 that I mean: the SleepWatcher scripts fail when the Energy Saver pref pane is locked because the system asks me to authenticate (a dialog pops up when the scripts execute). The scripts work fine when the Sys Prefs locks are unlocked. If I could write a script that includes the authentication (like some sort of SUDO trick that doesn't require manual input of a password), then that, too, would solve my issues. Although, that would mean writing my admin password into the script, I guess, which is not the greatest, security-wise. That's why I'm attempting to fix this Sys Prefs lock issue first. (Plus it's annoying to have to constantly unlock a lock I am constantly unlocking!!)
All this because Apple decided to change the Wake On LAN feature I've enjoyed using for a decade, without giving us some way to have Wake On LAN on with Wake On Demand off!! Errrrr...

  • System Preference/User Accounts Crashes

System preferences crashes when opening "Accounts" or when using parental controls for one user, but not other.  Would it help to include the bug report generated upon crashing?

Problem began after son said his password had mysteriously changed, so I reset it and then the problem began.
Started up from Install disc and reset passwords, restarted computer, still crashes program

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a cloning tool such as Disk Utility. Preferably both. You must be certain that you can restore everything to the state it's in now.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you import the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Import only the original administrator account. Also import Applications and other files. Test the system when it's up and running. If it seems normal, use Migration Assistant to import the other user accounts, one at a time.
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from a Time Machine backup
After each one, back up and test.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

    Rempleseed,
Is it an option to go back to an earlier time/state of the computer, obviously, after securing any files that may disappear (if you have them on your main harddisk)?

  • System Preferences no longer stick after 10.10.1 update

    I've upgraded from OS X 10.10 to 10.10.1 today.
The upgrade caused various system preferences to change, and now I cannot change them back.
While System Preferences.app seems to accept my changes, they are reverted after I quit and restart System Preferences.
    For example:
    Language & Region:
    - I used to have various languages in the list of my preferred languages. Since the update, only German remains in the list. Adding other languages does not stick.
    - My Region is set to Germany - English, which causes german text but english number formats to be used. Changing the number format to german does not stick.
    General:
    - When I click the scroll bar, this now causes the document to move by one page. I used to have the other setting (move to that location), but cannot reenable that.
    - Windows are now closed upon quitting applications. I don't want this, but removing the check box does not stick.
Does anybody have an idea what the root cause may be and how to fix this?
    With kind regards
    Piers Walter

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Blank white System Preferences window

    Hello all,
I purchased a secondhand G5 for the purpose of having a second internet station at home (I do most of my work on a late 2008 MBP but we've got multiple people here who like to use the Internet at the same time). When I set up this computer, it was hooked up to an old flat screen monitor (bought when they first came out) the HD was wiped clean, Leopard was installed, the internet was set up and working and everything seemed good to go. However, I wanted to get into the system to change the monitor resolution setting since the type/icons were a little big for my taste.
When I pulled up System Preferences, I got a completely blank white window. This happens every time System Prefs is launched. I can click on this window where normally icons would be, and things seem to happen (the window changes size) but it remains completely white. Moreover, all of the pulldown menus from the top menu bar also are blank white. I can move my mouse down in the File menu where Quit would normally be, and I can click on it and System Preferences quits. If I quit out of System Prefs, the Finder and other software windows act normally. When I log into System Prefs again, same blank white window, same problem.
This blank white window thing also happens with Preview, but I have not noticed it with any other programs on the system (yet).
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot:
Discarded appropriate systempreferences.plist file in the User>Library>Preferences window, also appropriate file in User>Library>Caches. Emptied trash and rebooted. Same problem.
Reinstalled Leopard, 10.5. Tested, same problem. Upgraded with combo pack to 10.5.8, tested, same problem.
Swapped out video card for a known working video card, tested, same problem.
Swapped monitor for known working new monitor, tested, same problem.
Am I missing some other .plist or similar file that should be discarded? Has anyone experienced anything like this and been able to solve it? Would this be due to software issues, or some kind of hardware issue? Because I can't see System Preferences, I can't create a new user account and discard the old one to try and resolve any software issues, my only choice is to do a clean install (which I have done to no avail).
Help? I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.
    Raji

Well, at least we are seeing some light here. I forgot about Safe Mode! When I started up into that, I can see the System Preferences windows just fine... it's no longer white, and I can select what I need and make changes.
However, I have done permissions repair from every possible angle (both from HD and DVD), I have reset the PRAM, and I still get a blank Sys Prefs window on normal startup.
The only thing suggested here I have not tried is replacing the PRAM battery (since at the moment, I don't have one). That will be the next angle of attack but I'll have to wait to get one in.
Other than the battery, could this be some kind of peripheral or software conflict?
This is bugging me! I mean really.... it's just an Internet station, but one does want things to work properly nonetheless!
Thanks for the help so far.... ! It has been useful.

  • System Preferences opens to a blank, white window

I erased my drive when I set up a Dual 2.7GHz G5 tower for sale, and installed Leopard. Updated to 10.5.4. Then found that when I open System Preferences, I get a blank white window. I can go to the dock item and click to select a particular tab, but it only changes the window size. It is still all white.
The menu bar items also display only white. Any ideas??? I'm stumped. Also sold the G5, so must get it fixed ASAP.

I don't know if this will help: it used to work well in 10.3 and earlier, and quite often in 10.4.
Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. Trash com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache as well if you have it.
If this alone doesn't fix things after a logout/login, then trash them again (because it will have regenerated more bad files), together with com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Home > Library > Preferences folder, and in the Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxx = a hexadecimal numeric string.
You need to log out and log back in again for this to have any effect (or restart if you prefer).
If none of this helps, you will need to look in your log files to find out why your preference panes are not opening: the simplest way to do this is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "Console Messages" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom tool to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar (preferably in another window). Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.
