SYSTEM PREFERENCES: numerous prefPanes appear broken

I have just upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.1
I appear to be having a similar issue to the user who gave up in this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23979507#23979507
The issues I've had with prefpanes are:
1. In the Internet accounts pane, changes to iCloud do not stick. For example, if I check the "keychain" radio button to add to iCloud it will check for a moment and then become unchecked.
the "Manage" button does not work. it clicks but nothing happens.
the "Options" button next to the documents item does not work, it clicks but nothing happens.
Additionally I am unable to add any account. when I select an account type from the list, it highlights briefly then nothing more happens.
The "Advanced" button does not work. It clicks but nothing happens.
The Details button next to my icloud account does not work. it clicks but nothing happens.
2.The ICloud pane has the same problems. changes do not stick. the "account details" and "sign out" buttons are clickable but do nothing. the "manage button" does nothing.
3. The "Advanced" button on settings panels where it appears is clickable but does not launch the advanced settings window.
4. The Network pane lets me delete services but the + button to add a new servce does nothing other than make the system preferences window flash. The revert button works, the Advanced button does not (like with all panes). The drop down list of functions from the preferences gear button appears, but selecting items in the list does nothing. I am able to connect and disconnect from existing network services but not add new ones although Network Setup Assistant launches from the "Assist me..." button so I may be able to add a new service from there.
5. Printers and Scanners lets me add but not delete devices. Open print queue works. Options and Supplies does not.
6. Users and Groups: I'm able to unlock the pane but cannot add or remove users. I am unable to change the Apple ID for my account. The contacts card button does not open. I can check and un check items in the login items and delete login items but it will not let me add new login in items to the list. FWIW I am able to add items to the list in Mac Pilot 6.
Troulbe shooting steps taken so far:
I've attempted to delete the .plist file for Internet Accounts and restart. this caused the online backup to activate and restore all the accounts, but the problems remain.
I've repaired permissions.
I've verified the SMART status of the hard drive
I am logged in as an administrator with full privileges.
I tried resetting Global preferences and it did not work.
Safe boot does not fix the problem.
I am unable to create a new account to see if it works as it did with the other user because I don't know how to do that other than by using the Users pref pane which is broken.
Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated.

Did some more digging and this thread resolves the issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5484035?start=0&tstart=0
My google-fu failed to turn this one up, so hopefully a few more links will help the knowledge spread about abit
The short version is this is a problem apparently caused by the UserInterface getting confused when drop shadows are turned off. There are a set of terminal commands starting on Page 6 of that thread that seem to fix the problem. they did for me.

the subject pretty much sums it up. I can't get sys pref to open up no matter what I try. I just click it and no window opens. any solutions?

    Hi.
    Try moving to the Desktop:
    User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and the subfolders in User/Library/Caches/System Preferences (they're numbered 00, 02, etc.)
    and restart.
    Good Luck.

  • Newest iTunes is overriding System Preference setting for appearance!

I have my appearances set to graphite (as opposed to blue). That is, my scroll bars, check boxes, apple logos etc. are all showing up in graphite and not blue. Unfortunately, after downloading and installing the newest update to iTunes, whenever that program is open, the appearances switch to blue. How to I get this override to stop??
    Thanks for your help...

Modifying the user template is not supported. You can Google for people who have done it in the past. I would recommend going to official route, if possible. Here are a couple of training documents. I'm sure there is more available though more official channels.

  • I have a macbook pro from ~2011. the arrangement tab normally shown in display system preferences no longer appears. how can i restore it to the menu?

looking to connect macbook to television. used to connect easily until i presented PPT for class. now "arrangement" tab no longer displayed, and macbook display does not show on TV

Use Finder and search for 'Microsoft Word'.  If it shows up, launch it from Finder and when it appears in Dock, right click the icon and select Options > Keep in dock.
If finder does not find Word it has somehow been deleted.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • System preferences issue?

I just got my system preferences to work. But can one of you 10.8 users please verify this:
When I secondary tap in my desktop and click "change desktop background" the system preferences window will appear the first time..
But if I do it again the second time, the window will not appear, it's like it auto hides itself? Any occurrences of the same kind for any of you?
And I also hear some random sound notifications in the background, but I check my notification center and nothing is changed or active..any of you getting this issue too?

I turn on the system, I use the right click on desktop and select "change desktop background" system preferences is showing up, and everything is fine. But when I try to do this again I can see that the system preferences start but the window is not showing up, I need to press the icon on the dock, or press command+tab, or use the right click on desktop and select change desktop background again, to see the window.
If I use system preferences from apple menu or dock icon, it run fine, but all the times when I try to change the desktop backgroung using the right click option this issue happen again.

  • System Preference icons corrupted after 10.4.7?

Following installation of 10.4.7, there's prpblems with the graphic card: some icons, particularly in System Preferences, disappear or appear completely garbled.
Has anyone the same issue and found a fix?
    Thank you!

Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) may resolve certain issues. It can’t hurt so perhaps it’s worth a shot.
    PERMISSIONS
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions

Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) is known to resolve certain anomalies and may well help with your symptom.
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • System Preferences 'Security & Privacy' Pane Automatically opens on login

I see there are a number of threads with System Preference pane problems in Mavericks - and while I've never had the problems other people are reporting with buttons not working, ever since installing Mavericks, the 'Security & Privacy' pane of my System Preferences pane always appears at login/startup, no matter what my settings are - with the 'Accessibility' section highlighted. Any Ideas?
(I also have the duplicate icon issue in the menu bar - with Ink specifically - but that's another thread...)

  • I can't see arrangement in system preferences

Arrangement does not show up in the display section of systems preferences.

It only appears if you have an external display connected.
If you already have a display connected, click the button at the bottom right of Display preferences called "Gather Windows" and it should pop on screen.

  • Installed Lion, change wallpaper, "desktop & screensaver" freeze, force quit, then "system preferences" freeze and need force quit every time

After Lion install, tried to change wallpaper in "system preferences"->"desktop & screensaver" appeared but immediatly freeze, so force quit.
Then System preference pane as it immediatly freezes if I try to open it.  Have to "force quit" each time.
Found many people have the exact issue and highly likely it's the bug of lion.
    Anybody found a solution?  Thx.

It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

  • System Preferences resetting?

    Hello All,
Is anyone else experiencing an issue in Leopard where your System Preferences are resetting/aren't sticking?
On several different occasions, I've noticed that my Preferences for Little Snitch seem to change back to the default settings. I just assumed that it was a bug in the software.
Today, I noticed (by accident) that some of my .Mac preferences had been reset; all of my Sync items (Bookmarks, etc.) were unchecked (and I KNOW I set them), and +Back to My Mac+ was turned on, and I know that I never would have done that (I only have 1 Mac with Leopard installed).
I use an app called +Preferential Treatment+ to check the integrity of my System Preferences, and it appears that everything is OK; no corrupt files.
What gives? Am I going crazy???
Please help. My concern is that one of my important preferences, like Security (Firewall), will turn off, and I won't know.
    Thanks!

This happens to me, if I change the ? option in the Desktop preferences or the key combos in the Expose preferences they tend to reset. The only way I can get them to stick is by editing the .plist file directly. When I do this I can see that System Preferences doesn't seem to be saving the changes I made.

  • How do I stop system preferences from freezing up?

Ever since I installed an 8GB ram into my iMac (early '09) I have been having trouble with system preferences. It appears to be frozen on the desktop picutre screen and the loading wheel just continues to spin to no avail. I always end up having to force quit the process.
This is really bothering me so if anyone can help I will be grateful.
PS I am using OS X Lion, if that helps...

Ok, I guess.  I think just logging out and back in would be sufficient in that case.
FWIW, FYI,  com.apple.systempreferences.plist is there.  Just opening system prefes would recreate it if it wasn't there which is why I originally suggested removing it to get a fresh copy created.  You must not have looked in the Preferences in you Library directory and looked in the Library Preferences in the boot disk instead.

    Hi jenette,
If you are having issues using an HDTV via HDMI as an external display to your MacBook Air, you may find the following article helpful:
OS X: How to use multiple displays with your Mac in Mountain Lion and earlier
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5019
(Note: You will generally only see the arrangement option in Displays when you are configured to use the external display in Extended Desktop mode; there is no arrangement in Mirroring as both screens are showing the same image.)

  • Calendar not appearing in sync tab on MobileMe System Preferences

The Calendar check box is not appearing in sync tab on MobileMe System Preferences.
When I opened SP, MobileMe and sync tab, I can Calendar showing up and disappearing right away. What is this?
I am sorry if it was already discussed, but I could not find it. I can see topics about iCal bug and syncs but not specificaly this one.
    Thanks for any help.
    Mario Lordeiro

    Mario,
The calendar sync has been removed from the MobileMe Sync preference pane, but I have seen the problem you have described, and can invoke it by accessing the "Open MobileMe Preferences...> selction through the sync icon menu item (Option + Click):
Then I am presented with this:
The "Calendars" choice disappears when I access the sync preference directly from System Preferences.
Seems like a bug to me.
