System Preferences--- Printer & Fax
When I open Printer & Fax from system preferences and click on "print queue" or "printer setup" neither will open a new window. I cannot see a current printer queue or log. Nothing opens.
I solved the problem. I erased a partition on an external HD, installed OS 10.4 from my purchased 2003 Tiger DVD. After the installation it automatically went to the Apple website and got 6 items for software upgrade, including OS 10.4.8. I downloaded those and drug the print setup app to the main HD, restarted with that volume and everything worked and with the proper icons, including "print queue" and "printer setup.app".

System Preference: Print & Fax missing
Hello.
When I go to System Preferences > Internet & Network...
My Print & Fax icon is missing. I can't select and default my installed printers.
How do I retrieve this icon?
ThanksIt's an easy fix. Just delete the preferences file and open System Preferences to create a new one:
1. Quit System Preferences.
2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
3. Choose Go > Go To Folder.
4. Type: ~/Library/Caches
5. Click Go.
6. Locate this file: "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache"
7. Drag it to the Trash.
8. Open System Preferences. -
I had to buy a new printer when I got my Imac and I chose the Brother multifunction inkjet MFCJ470DW. It worked fine when my Mavericks version was 10.9.1, but after the automatic update to 10.9.2 the computer no longer recognizes the brother, or says it isn't connected, and when I deleted it from printer preferences and attempted to re-enter it as default printer, I cannot even type anything into the list of printers when I press the + sign to add. What am I doing wrong? Can someone please tell me even how to add text into the printer preferences list?
I had some of the same issues your having, deleted the printer from Printer and Scanner in System Preference.
What I ended up doing was connecting the printer with a USB cable like it was a new set up, down loaded the drivers from Apple, still did not seem to work, but did a coupel of restarts and the printer was found then I completed the set up. -
Add (+) printer in Sys Prefs Print & Fax makes Print Setup Utility crash!
Something is wrong with System Preferences Print & Fax pane, or something else... From there, I can't add any new printers. When you click + below the list, it's supposed to launch printer setup utility? But it does nothing what so ever.. or that's what I thought until I looked in Console to see what's going on (if anything), and the console reports that the printer setup utility crashed. It launches fine directly from Utilities. What gives?
Here is the crashlog report, if anyone can make sense of it:

Scanner sharing in System Preferences doesn't work
I have an Epson AcuLaser CX11NF networked by ethernet with a couple of other devices and my Mac Pro, and a wireless LAN connected to BT Infinity for broadband access. The various MacBooks and remote desktop Macs rely on the wireless network for access to the Epson. Print access through printer sharing works fine, but I can't establish scanner sharing. In System Preferences > Sharing, Scanner Sharing is ticked, but no scanner appears in the window (I was expecting something analogous to the Printer Sharing pair, Printers: and Users:, but there is just one window). In System Preferences > Print & Fax, with the Epson and the Scan tab selected, if I tick the box for "Share this scanner on the network", it doesn't stay ticked. If I navigate to another preference pane and return, it is unticked.
Further evidence that something is failing to work properly comes from System Preferences > Security > Firewall > Advanced..., where File Sharing (AFP), Printer Sharing, and Web Sharing all show "Allow incoming connections" as they should, but Scanner Sharing doesn't appear.
NB: 10.6.8 on all OS X machines in question. We've got Lion on a MacBook Air, but we're not even trying this with the Epson yet.
What's going wrong? No, it's located in a different room from the router; neither can be changed. It's not plugged directly into a Mac, but into an ethernet switch into which the Mac is also plugged.
Surely if I could plug it into the router, that would make it directly accessible to all devices on the wireless network. That's not the issue. Because I can't do that, I want to make it available through Scanner Sharing. This is what isn't working, although Printer Sharing of the same device in the same configuration is working. -
Epson scanner perfection 1670 is not detected on system preference pane
It use to work but now it only produces blank grey scans.
I have deinstalled and reinstalled new driver from Epson support site.
I have also tried cleaning the USB connection with no results.
I have noticed that when I tried connecting to the internet from the the scanner Help menu it tells me I am not connected (while I am) and I noticed also that the scanner is not detected on system preference pane. You can open System Profiler and under the Hardware heading you will see the USB entry. The printer should be listed under one of the USB busses. If you don't see it then the USB cable could be faulty or the printer itself could be cactus. So try another USB cable and in another port on the Mac. If the new cable and socket fails to make the printer appear in the USB view then the printer is the problem.
If the printer is visible under one of the USB busses then this would indicate that the printer and the USB cable is okay. In this case the printer should be capable of being added in Print & Fax. But if you select to add the printer and it does not appear in the Default view of the Add Printer pane then try a reset of the printing system, as described next.
1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
5. Restart your Mac -
Just installed 10.6.4. Now clicking on Print&Fax crashes system preferences
Hi all,
Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and then couldn't print from my Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer. I installed updated software and firmware from Kodak. Still can't print and when I click on Print & Fax in system preferences it crashes system preferences. (Other system preferences options don't make it crash.)
I've repaired permissions and I've unplugged USB and power to printer and replugged and restarted computer and still no luck.
Help! Thanks so much, guys. You're an awesome bunch of folks who have been so helpful in the past. Hoping you can advise me here.Tried that and it still crashed System Preferences when I clicked on Printer&Fax. But thanks for replying! Still looking for solutions. I know it's tough when I'm asking at the start of a holiday weekend!

System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..."
Hi,
I tried to load a Canon printer driver for the ir1023. After the install it required a restart. The Mac Pro never fully turned off, so I was stuck having to do a manual shut down with the power button. I am sure this messed everything up.
When I logged back on System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..." when I click the icon. So I deleted the printing preferences, from my preferences folder and still nothing.
I ran the canon installer and that ran successfully, but did not remedy the problem. No Mac programs will print, Photoshop will not launch and Text Edit won't quit.
I ran Disk permissions from the Leopard disk, still no improvement.
Any ideas on how to fix my printing woes without a reinstall?
And I was having some hardware issues with my Time Machine drive - so I had no backup to fall back on.
Thanks!I would run the UFR2 driver installer again, but when it shows Easy Install at the Installation Type pane, change the menu to Uninstall. This should remove all the UFR2 files, most of which are copied to ./Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2.
With the Canon files removed, try to open the Print & Fax pane again. If it still fails to load, you could try opening the CUPS web page (http://127.0.0.1:631). From here you can select the printer list and job list and possibly remove any existing printers or jobs that are in the system. Ideally we would like to reset the printing system, but I don't think we can do this from the web page or from Terminal - we need the GUI of Print & Fax.
Will do some more reading and get back to you....

I seem to have lost fax capability with Snow Leopard.
Does not appear in Print as before. Cant find fax in System Preferences. No drivers for fax found.
Initially said it was downloading software but no longer does this. Fax test works on HP site.
Using HPC410aHP Photosmart Premium
Any help would be appreciated.
Bob Wines. Thanks for your detailled description of the faxmodem installation!
I've tried this with Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion and it works fine.
I've to type "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" in terminal to see the interface.
Does anybody know, if send faxes are saved somewhere? -
Print & Fax Pane in System Preferences will not open
Hey, Folks, Anybody had this problem?
I am running 10.3.9 and I can't get the Print & Fax pane to open in System Preferences. All of the other panes will open. Does anyone know a fix or workaround for this problem? I would like to set up faxing from my computer which is an iMac flat-panel @ 800mgh.
Thanking you in advance,
Gerry Harpole
iMac flat-panel Mac OS X (10.3.9)Dan,
I do not believe or advocate that moving plist files to another user will solve plist corruption. Knowing that the problem is limited to a single user should eliminate your OS installation concerns.
Checking Console for clues, and Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke would be my next recommendation.
I would also recommend that you check out Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, by Kurt Lang.

System preferences quits when clicking print&fax
Every time I open print&fax in system preferences the application stalls for some seconds and then moves to the next window. but when I click on the plus to add a printer it stalls again, then opens the window to search for printers, then the application (system preferences) quits. It's beginning to get very frustrating and I never thought I would have a problem like this with a Mac. How do I fix it? Should I take my Macbook into a retail store for help?
figured out the problem finally. turns out my hard drive was defective and dying out, which seemed to be causing the sudden hesitations when opening up certain applications. unfortunately i found out the hard way and my hard drive crashed with all of my info. they replaced it but ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR FILES!!

Print & fax (system preference panel) reset?
Hello,
I can't print. I'm running out of options.
As part of the troubleshooting, I have removed the printer (reset the printing system…) from the system preference panel.
When I re-enter the printer, I get the same (false) "out of toner" message when I want to print.
Is there another cache or preference panel in the system that I can trash to reset the printer (yellow toner) fuel gague?
The "out of toner message" is sticky. The cartridge is new and I have removed and reentered the printer a few times.
Is there a plist or something that will regenerate itself when I reinstall the printer on AirPort?
Must I reboot between reset and reenter? The issue is being caused by SNMP status information. We had devices that were using an EFI "Fiery" controller and they were experiencing the same issue after the Mac to 10.6.8. Following is the information that EFI released in a technical bulltetin. Depending on what printer you have, the following may be of some help.
EFI Tech Ticker Alert June 27, 2011
After installing the OSX 10.6.8 update, the printer shows status as paused and will not resume. Note not all Fiery printers are affected with this new Apple update. We are looking for a resolution to this from Apple.
For users who are seeing this problem in the field and can't wait for a fix from Apple, there is a workaround that can be made in the CUPS filter. This workaround deactivates some status information from the printer to the print driver but still enables printing.
If your Fiery printer has this issue follow the short term workaround solution below.
This workaround consists of adding a *cupsSNMPSupplies: False line to a ppd file in the /etc/cups/ppd folder.
You’ll need administrative privileges to perform this workaround. Detailed steps are outlined below.
For this example we will use ColorPrinter as the name of the printer affected by the 10.6.8 update.
1. From the Finder menu choose Go, then Go to Folder...
2. Enter /etc/cups/ppd in the Go to Folder dialog box and choose Go.
3. Find the ppd named ColorPrinter.ppd. (This is the same name as the ColorPrinter in Print and Fax with a .ppd extension. )
4. Drag the ColorPrinter.ppd to the Desktop.
5. Open the ColorPrinter.ppd with TextEdit.
6. At the end of the PPD add the following line exactly as written: *cupsSNMPSupplies: False
7. Save the modified ColorPrinter.ppd to the Desktop.
8. From the /etc/cups/ppd folder, move the original ColorPrinter.ppd to the trash. Authenticate when prompted. 9. Drag the modified ColorPrinter.ppd from the Desktop to the /etc/cups/ppd folder. Authenticate when prompted.
10. Printing should now work as expected. (You may have to start the print queue if it was previously paused.) -
Mac 10.5.8 system preferences not responding when opening print and fax
My HP photosmart printer has stopped responding. The pinwheel comes up and freezes the computer when ever I try and access the printer, or anything to do with the printer. I have also tried going in through system preferences and the I cannot even access it. The pinwheel again pops up. I have not added any software lately. I have tried to update my software both for the Mac and the printer. There are no updates available. I am using Mac 10.5.8
Any ideas / solutions????First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
DELETED printer from system preferences
Mistakenly I deleted my printer (Konica Minolta Magicolor 2530DL) from my system preferences... I didn't have created a back up file from "Time Machine" application... I tried to reinstalling the drivers but system shows me the message: "you can't install this driver... already installed in your computer", however, System preferences does NOT show the printer in the list.... how can I restore the printer? (I already tried checking for the deleted files in the "trash" but I couldn't find them) somebody en light me please.
Thank you Baltwo... I did what you instructed me... went to system preferences... opened the printers/fax option... then on the window pressed ctrl + click ... the message "reset printing system..." pop up... then I named the printer queue as "Konica Minolta Magicolor 2530 DL"... and added the software from the list... the printer's name now is in the system preferences... when I open an application and send a printer test, the queue appears... however, the printer DOES NOT print... I don't know... did I something wrong?... please answer.

"Print & Fax" preference pane is GONE!!!
I have been having trouble printing to my USB connected printer on my Imac from my G4 powerbook.
In looking into the problem, I have noticed that the "print & fax" preference pane in System Preferences is missing on both computers. I have a strange feeling that this is why my wireless shared printed has ceased.
Has anyone else had this problem or know of a way to get the Print & Fax pane back??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
SheaOk...I tried your suggestions below, but upon restart, the preference pane STILL is not shown in System Preferences. I checked in the HD/System/Library/PreferencePane folder and I don't even see the Print & Fax prefPane listed among all the others...
Any other suggestions??
Shea,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quit System Preferences if it's running and trash the
following file:
Macintosh
HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/com.apple.prefere
ncepanes.cache
Log out/in or restart and try the Print & Fax
Preference Pane.
