System Preferences Sharing Internet Airport

System 10.4.11
In System Preferences>Sharing>Internet my wife's iBook lists three check box options: Built-in Ethernet, Built-in Firewire and Airport. My Powerbook with the same system does not list the Airport option. How can I add it? Thanks.

I've now found that on my Powerbook the Airport choice shows up if after the "Share your connection from" I chose something other than Airport. Not so with my wife's iBook Airport is always a choice. Now I am confused.

  • System Preferences Sharing – what is the default security setup?

    Hi
I have been searching for documentation about whether or not the services offered in System Preferences > Sharing is securely encrypted or not.
I know that the Remote Login is just SSH, and that is considered secure.
But what about Screen Sharing (VNC) and File Sharing (AFP)?

You are right - naked file sharing over the internet is a bad idea.
However, you can set it up within an "SSH tunnel", which encrypts the data.
An overview of the general concept can be found here (http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1816). It is arcane (fun for some!) and uses a bit of command line magic, but it works.
Alternatively, you can use a service like "logmein", which does most of the heavy lifting for you.

  • In System Preferences- Sharing- Remote Management the address doesn't reflect the computer name.

    Hi,
I have a dual boot system with two seperate hard drives, Lion and Snow Leopard.  One drive has a name of mac-pro2 for Lion and mac-pro2sl for Snow Leopard.  Something happened when I rebooted from Snow Leopard to Lion that in System Preferences->Sharing->Remote Management that the computer name had changed to the Snow Leopard  computer name it has a address and name of mac-pro2sl.  I have change the Computer Name: and it worked and was changed to mac-pro2 but Remote Management still has the address of mac-pro2sl and doesn't reflect the computer name.  I can ssh into Lion with mac-pro2sl but I have a conflict with from other computers when I log in with a warning of "Remote Host Identification has Changed".  How do you change the computer name for remote management and ssh?
I have changed the hostname and it reflects the change when you login, mac-pro2 for Lion.  But when you ssh into Lion it requires mac-pro2sl not mac-pro2.
When I change the computer name it shows below that the name in "Remote Management: On" "computer using the address mac-pro2sl" is selected but then doesn't change but remains the same when the dialog closes.  How do you change the address to reflect the computer name? Is there a command line utility?
    Thanks for any help.

If this problem is due to DNS, look in your configuration. What is the number one DNS server address? Is it local, or is it on the Internet at large? Or post the Address here and folks can help you look it up.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • System preferences, sharing, remote management?

    Hello,
Could someone tell me where I can find more information of how to use remote management that is under system preferences, sharing. What is the difference between screen sharing and remote management? It will be a great help as I am learning my way round my mybook and this feature would be of great help.
    Thanks!

    Hi Allan,
Open System Preferences (Applications folder) and click the Sharing icon. Very bottom right of that window click the ? mark. That will prompt the Help Viewer for the Sharing preferences. You can type in keywords at the top of that window in the search field. Example: Remote Management
Mac OS X: About File Sharing

  • HT1507 I do not see a firewall tab when going to System Preferences Sharing?

I do not see a firewall tab when going to System Preferences>Sharing.
I am unable to make or receive iChat video calls.
Trying to figure out what is going on with my router.

    Hi,
    For others.
The Firewall is in System Preferences > Security > Firewall
There are then slight variances in Leopard and Snow Leopard/Lion about when you turn it ON and when you can access the Advanced Button
If it is set to ON then you need to go to the Advanced Button and Enable Allow Signed software
You may also need to add iChat (Or message beta) to the List.
    NOTE
Enabling Stealth will stop iChat/Messages from working.

You have to upgrade to Lion for the iCloud preferences to be available.

  • System Preferences - Sharing Panel shows after startup, why?

    Systems Preferences > Sharing opens after startup but is not requested as a Login Item;
this annoys the **** out of me.
    What I have tried:
         repair permissions,
         re-install mavericks
reset permissions on Sys Pref > Sharing to no sharing
reset permissions on "Get Info" panel
         Restart and Shut down
None of these fix the problem.
It seems to be account related; other accounts do not have that problem.
What is the simplest method to set up a new user and transfer all my data to that user and get rid of the old one?
Is there a better way to fix it without setting up a new account?
    It drives me nuts.

  • System preference/sharing lock icon permissions

i would like to find a log of system preferences / sharing , that would show when the lock icon is becoming unlocked on its own.
the OS is up to date with current software updates.
when i do open system preference / sharing from the doc, sharing is unlocked.
    this has happened many times.
now i keep system preference sharing or network in eyeball view during any session and off to the side so i can watch the lock icon. and the lock icon stays in a lock position. i have expereinced that if i close system preference and then re open some other time days, the lock icon would be open in sharing or network.
I have searched in console logs, yet i do not know precisly what key words or phrases or alphanumeric combo would or could id actions in system preferences or if i could actually find any hint of unlock action of and in system preferences in console. every other action detail is in there, so it seems.
    what could i do.
    thank you

Open the Security pane of System Preferences and check whether System Preferences is set to require a password to unlock each secure pane. If it's not, simply being logged in as an administrator will unlock all the panes except for Accounts.

  • System preferences, Sharing: just a few items?

    Hi,
I saw a video tutorial recently, in which the instructor started Apache by turning on "Personal Web Sharing" under "Sharing" in "System Preferences", from an earlier version of OSX Server. But in OSX SL Server I find only 7 items, and there is no "Personal Web Sharing" or even "Web Sharing". Nor do I find "Printer Sharing", "Internet Sharing", "XGrid Sharing", etc. etc. Are these placed somewhere else or did I do something wrong?

    Hi
You may have been slightly confused about what you were looking at? Personal, Printer, Web, FTP and the rest are only available in the Client OS via the Sharing Preferences Pane. For OSX Server most of these are dedicated Services with their own 'fuller-featured' interfaces accessed via Server Admin. You won't see them in OSX Server's Sharing Preferences Pane in other words.
I say Server Admin as I only ever use this and WorkGroup Manager. I have a feeling Server Preferences (depending on which mode chosen at the install stage) might give you some (limited?) access to these services also?
Apart from the interface you can access all of these services as well as some features not available in the GUI using the command line:
    man serveradmin
Would be a good place to start. Not sure how effective some of the command line tools are if indeed you chose Standalone at the beginning? This 'special' mode seems to behave in a way most of the experienced contributors/users on here are not familiar with because we simply don't use it. Standard/Standalone also seems to use config files in a different way? This is a shame as most of the current crop of posters looking for help are not necessarily getting what they were hoping for?
Of course I could be assuming too much here and you are actually using SA and WGM normally?

  • File Sharing Missing from System Preferences Sharing

Hello, I am running MAC OSX Server 10.5.8. When I open System Preferences and click on Sharing I do not see the option to enable File Sharing. What must I do to get that to show up in the list? Right now my list looks like this...
    __ DVD or CD Sharing
    __ Screen Sharing
    __ Remote Login
    __ Remote Management
    __ Remote Apple Events
    __ Bluetooth Sharing
That's it. No File Sharing and everything I have searched to this point makes me believe it should be there.
Also, I have enabled AFP, NFS, SMP in the Server Admin. I have also turned off Firewall just to see what happened. Nothing.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Where are the system preferences for internet access?

I had to re-install 10.6.2 with a disk formatting... all went well and I manage to go online .
But I notice that my old system preferences are not back in place... I don't have all the connection settings I used to have and in which I had a manual IP address for a school ethernet network connection.
    Where can I find them?
Can I just drag them back into my computer?
    Thanks for your help.
    JP

If you have a backup of your entire previous system, you could try looking at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.network.identification.plist . I'm not 100% sure that's where the information would be stored, but it looks promising. If you think you would recognize the IP address when you see it, open that file from your backup with a text editor and scan through for the IP address. Then enter it in your network settings.
If you don't think you'd know what you were looking at, you could try moving that file from the backup to the new system, but I'd take some precautions. Move the newer copy of that file to the desktop temporarily, then restart and see how things work. If anything goes wonky, put it back, replacing the older file. If after a few days all is well, trash it.

  • System Preferences Sharing Issue - computer is mis-named somehow

    Hello all,
I have 2 MBP's and I connect to one often through screen sharing.   The machine i connect to now has the screen sharing name of an Airport Express that i set up with it.  It also has this name in web sharing as well.   Is there a way to change this back to the default naming, the computer name?

  • Strange System Preferences / Sharing / File Sharing problem...

I got this problem on an otherwise perfectly running iMac used for media production:
I can't add a share. The box is blank, and when I try to add a drive it does not take. If I try again, I get a boatload of these warnings in console and then the machine freezes, time for a ctrlcmdeject.
Last weekend when the machine had some downtime, I cloned the internal drive, wiped it, and reinstalled SL. Problem solved...sortof. I am now back on the original image as the machine is not free for the days it will take to do a reinstall of the OS AND all the apps.
Do you think there is anything else I could try? I've hit all the usual suspects: permissions, disk warrior, etc. There must be some sudo command for this:)

My ex-genius bar pal came over today (we are lucky to have him here in KTM) and said all he can see is that CoreServices crashes when u try and add a share. He fixed global sharing by having the system recreate some system-level plists. But there is still this one bug, that I can ignore by just never using the system pref pane to add shares:) However, if anyone has another idea, feel free to append.

  • HELP!! System Preferences Crashed Each Time I Click On Internet Sharing

Like the title says, every time I go to system preferences/sharing/internet, it crashes. I am not sure how to fix this or what is going on, but I thought that maybe someone on here would know a way to help me. Thanks all!

    Preferences may be corrupted.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.systempreferenes.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
