System Preferences - Sharing Panel shows after startup, why?

Systems Preferences > Sharing opens after startup but is not requested as a Login Item;
this annoys the **** out of me.
What I have tried:
     repair permissions,
     re-install mavericks
reset permissions on Sys Pref > Sharing to no sharing
reset permissions on "Get Info" panel
     Restart and Shut down
None of these fix the problem.
It seems to be account related; other accounts do not have that problem.
What is the simplest method to set up a new user and transfer all my data to that user and get rid of the old one?
Is there a better way to fix it without setting up a new account?
It drives me nuts.
Sigi

Hi,
I cleared the System cache using OnyX and that fixed the problem.
Thank you all,

  • System Preferences Sharing Internet Airport

    System 10.4.11
In System Preferences>Sharing>Internet my wife's iBook lists three check box options: Built-in Ethernet, Built-in Firewire and Airport. My Powerbook with the same system does not list the Airport option. How can I add it? Thanks.

I've now found that on my Powerbook the Airport choice shows up if after the "Share your connection from" I chose something other than Airport. Not so with my wife's iBook Airport is always a choice. Now I am confused.

    Hi,
    For others.
The Firewall is in System Preferences > Security > Firewall
There are then slight variances in Leopard and Snow Leopard/Lion about when you turn it ON and when you can access the Advanced Button
If it is set to ON then you need to go to the Advanced Button and Enable Allow Signed software
You may also need to add iChat (Or message beta) to the List.
    NOTE
Enabling Stealth will stop iChat/Messages from working.

  • In System Preferences- Sharing- Remote Management the address doesn't reflect the computer name.

    Hi,
I have a dual boot system with two seperate hard drives, Lion and Snow Leopard.  One drive has a name of mac-pro2 for Lion and mac-pro2sl for Snow Leopard.  Something happened when I rebooted from Snow Leopard to Lion that in System Preferences->Sharing->Remote Management that the computer name had changed to the Snow Leopard  computer name it has a address and name of mac-pro2sl.  I have change the Computer Name: and it worked and was changed to mac-pro2 but Remote Management still has the address of mac-pro2sl and doesn't reflect the computer name.  I can ssh into Lion with mac-pro2sl but I have a conflict with from other computers when I log in with a warning of "Remote Host Identification has Changed".  How do you change the computer name for remote management and ssh?
I have changed the hostname and it reflects the change when you login, mac-pro2 for Lion.  But when you ssh into Lion it requires mac-pro2sl not mac-pro2.
When I change the computer name it shows below that the name in "Remote Management: On" "computer using the address mac-pro2sl" is selected but then doesn't change but remains the same when the dialog closes.  How do you change the address to reflect the computer name? Is there a command line utility?
    Thanks for any help.

If this problem is due to DNS, look in your configuration. What is the number one DNS server address? Is it local, or is it on the Internet at large? Or post the Address here and folks can help you look it up.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • System Preferences won't save after change

    Hello everyone,
I am running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a Black Macbook. The problem I am having is that none my changes will save in the system preferences. For example. I change the desktop background but the background won't change. The display window in the systems preferences window will show the picture I chose, but the desktop won't.
Another example: if I turn off "spaces" in systems preferences. It will show as off in the system preferences window, but as soon as I close the system preferences window, the changes won't take affect. This seems to happen with any change to settings in the system preferences.
I have recently used both "disk warrior" and Onyx to rebuild my desktop, check my drive and everything else those applications do. But still no change.
One more hint: I deleted an application (TomTom home) from my computer a few months ago, but the old icon shows up in the Dock as a "?" after each restart. I can drag it ot the desktop and delete it, but if I restart it will always show up.
What could be wrong? Should I do a reinstall? I don't have the disks...
    Thanks Mac folks!

Ok, I tried both removing the "com.apple.systempreference.plist" and restarting from both a Disk Warrior disk, and the Mac OS X Install CD 1 and doing a repair of the disk permissions. Neither of the tricks worked.
I no longer have a "com.apple.systempreference.plist" file anywhere on my computer and I still have the same problems.
So what should I do now? I have (obviously) found my original disks. I am thinking I need to do a new install of the system software? What is the process for doing that and not lose my data?
    Thanks again for everybodies help.

  • System preference/sharing lock icon permissions

i would like to find a log of system preferences / sharing , that would show when the lock icon is becoming unlocked on its own.
the OS is up to date with current software updates.
when i do open system preference / sharing from the doc, sharing is unlocked.
    this has happened many times.
now i keep system preference sharing or network in eyeball view during any session and off to the side so i can watch the lock icon. and the lock icon stays in a lock position. i have expereinced that if i close system preference and then re open some other time days, the lock icon would be open in sharing or network.
I have searched in console logs, yet i do not know precisly what key words or phrases or alphanumeric combo would or could id actions in system preferences or if i could actually find any hint of unlock action of and in system preferences in console. every other action detail is in there, so it seems.
    what could i do.
    thank you

Open the Security pane of System Preferences and check whether System Preferences is set to require a password to unlock each secure pane. If it's not, simply being logged in as an administrator will unlock all the panes except for Accounts.

Hi, I am using my icloud on my iphone but am unable to find it on my mac book pro. It's not under my system preferences like it shows under the setup. Can I download it again? Or something. I just need to backup some files on my computer and am unable.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • System preferences, sharing, remote management?

    Hello,
Could someone tell me where I can find more information of how to use remote management that is under system preferences, sharing. What is the difference between screen sharing and remote management? It will be a great help as I am learning my way round my mybook and this feature would be of great help.
    Thanks!

    Hi Allan,
Open System Preferences (Applications folder) and click the Sharing icon. Very bottom right of that window click the ? mark. That will prompt the Help Viewer for the Sharing preferences. You can type in keywords at the top of that window in the search field. Example: Remote Management
Mac OS X: About File Sharing

  • System Preferences Sharing – what is the default security setup?

    Hi
I have been searching for documentation about whether or not the services offered in System Preferences > Sharing is securely encrypted or not.
I know that the Remote Login is just SSH, and that is considered secure.
But what about Screen Sharing (VNC) and File Sharing (AFP)?

You are right - naked file sharing over the internet is a bad idea.
However, you can set it up within an "SSH tunnel", which encrypts the data.
An overview of the general concept can be found here (http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1816). It is arcane (fun for some!) and uses a bit of command line magic, but it works.
Alternatively, you can use a service like "logmein", which does most of the heavy lifting for you.

  • I have mac os x 10.6.8. The system preferences doesn't show java at all. How can I install java please?

    Hi!
I have mac os x 10.6.8. The system preferences doesn't show java at all. How can I install java please?

Don't change your story now. You did not say through Apple, you first gave a link to this site,
    http://www.java.com/en/download/apple.jsp
You said, "Go there and download the latest version of Java"
    that plainly says,
"Mac OS X Version 10.6 and below
Use Software Update available on the Apple menu to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java 6 for your Mac."
This corroborates me saying that Java for Mac OS 10.6 is done through Software Update, no where else.
If any Mac OS 10.6 user does not have Java on their Mac, they get it from Apple just as the link you provided shows it is from Apple. Not Oracle. You have provided the evidence that plainly contradicts yourself.
This is your second link that is to Apple.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
Just to go over this again. Software Update not only updates Java to the latest, but if Java does not exist at all, SU will install it from scratch. And in doing so will be the latest version.
Providing a link to Oracle's site is useless information that does not get Java installed on a Mac running 10.6.

  • Why does system preferences not pop up after 2nd time accessing it using right click on desktop?

Any help? Genius bar was stumped. I reinstalled mt. lion, but it still persists. Thanks.

Your question is very confusing ... especially "after 2nd time accessing it using right click on desktop".
"Using right click" -- why would you do that?  What are you right clicking?
"On desktop" -- does that mean on a vacant area of your desktop?
Anyway, a quick way to System Preferences is to simply click normally on the System Preferences icon in the dock, which looks like this:

  • I am trying to set up ICloud on my MacBook pro and I have the most recent software but all that shows up in system preferences is mobile me still.  Why is that?

Mobile me is still there and I don't have a mobile me account so I cannot log in.

I am having the same problem.
My iMac has kept up to date with OSX now at 10.7.4. I successfully switched to iCloud yesterday - and System Preferences shows iCloud icon.
My 2 laptops (Air, Pro) I have realised are behind thet times - both are on 10.6.8. In both cases Software Update says they are up to date!
I am wondering if this has something to do with the fact that I was very lazy and bought the OS X Lion from the App Store - downloaded onto the iMac and then transferred legally to the laptops with a USB drive.
I have tried to update the laptops with a download of 10.7.1 (and also 10.7.2) but the system wants a 10.7 upgrade first.
I am now downloading the whole of Lion again from the App Store, to see if that will allow me to update the 2 laptops.
Any insight out there? I will report progress..........
