System Preferences / Sound / Preferences do not stay

The option to use the external speakers does not stick. I need to reset it every time I boot. Very frustrating. Any help is appreciated. Thank YOU.

I would suggest deleting the preference list file that controls that, but I can't find it.
If you open both your Library/Preferences and the main /Library/Preferences and put them in List view sorted by date modified. Then, go into system prefs and change the output. You should see a preference file pop to the top. The com.apple.systempreferences.plist will be there, but it doesn't contain the sound settings. It just gets updated when you change preference panes.
There is a com.apple.systemsound.plist, but I didn't see the sound output in it.

My System Preferences icons disappeared from my dock. I dragged it back from the applications folder but it disappears when I close the application folder. If I leave the application folder open and then open the system preferences it will stay on the dock until I close the system preferences window. I've repaired permissions, delete the com.apple.dock.plist. Any ideas ?

Drag back the system pref icon to the dock.
Right click and hold the mouse button untill the options window appear and then choose-select
keep in the dock.

Printer sharing in System Preferences will not stay checked

I have two printers connected to my iMac (10.7.3) and I am trying to enable printer sharing for my MacBook Air to utilize the iMac's printers. On the iMac, I go to System Prefrences > Sharing and check Printer Sharing and I ensure that both printers are being shared. Everything is checked, but the second I close the System Prefrences window, the printer sharing stops working. I go back into System Prefrences and the Printer Sharing box is unchecked. Any idea as to why this is occuring?

Does Printer Sharing actually work until you close the preference pane? You've tested it?

I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.

To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.

My Systems Preferences does not work, either reminders and messages... since Mavericks(10.9) Programs do not respond and Macbook air is not responding.... Help.....

Well, you are certainly correct that the fact that the "wired" machines work sure doesn't rule out a faulty router....But that's why (as part of a process of elimination troubleshooting scheme) I hooked up my old Linksys Router, and got the same results. Now...What are the odds of 2 separate routers acting the same way? Especially when both worked fine on my TIPB and even on my MBP until a few months ago. Plus, my 12 year old son can pull a wireless signal from the router on his console games (xbox360, Wii, PS3) with no problem
Believe me, my first thought was to go out and buy another router, but when I swapped routers and got the same problem, I began to look elsewhere, eventually coming here for help and knowledge.
I did the SMC reset to no avail. I'm not sure about the stuff in System Configuration....By "pull" do you mean to delete all the files in this folder? Move them to a temporary folder? Should I just deal with the folders that have "IP" in the "bundle" file name?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since upgrading to Lion OS, the wifi connectivity keeps blocking up intermittently and we need to manually keep switching on and off the wifi utility to get the connection back. even locking the preferred wifi network in system preferences does not help.

This is a big thank you to Rys Sinnefeldt who posted this fix.
Rys has made this fix very easy to do and takes literally 2 mins. It involves replacing the Atheros Lion driver 4.0 and replacing it with the snow leopard driver. Don't worry, Rys has made this so simple to do even I could do it and so far I have had no more wifi drops.

upgraded software today and now system preferences will not open. when i click on it a message says "you cannot open the application 'system preferences' because it is not supported on this architecture". system preferences icon has a circle and slash symbol on top of it. my imac is about 6 months old and have not had a problem with it. all other apps work. please help.

Tried that, did 'repair disk permissions and it said all was ok. But when I pressed the 'Verify permissions' button it came out with an error message. Said that there was an error upon exiting, said the hard drive was damaged. Do you think that is connected to 'system preferences' not opening. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

HELP.........systems preferences do not respond....after most recent Security Update...During the most recent Security update download, near the end of the process,clean turned all graining and seemed to freeze. I waited awhile and then turned the computer.
ever since then I can not open up any of my systems preferences, battery level,date and time do not show up on the top of the screen as before.....
I had since gone and successfully downloaded the most recent security update for the Apple site and after a restart still no battery level, systems preferences or date and time....

Odd bug: "keyboard and mouse" within "system preferences" will not open!!

After having to Archive and Re-Install yesterday and installing "X11", I have an odd problem:
- apple+i leads to crashing and restart of "Finder"
- when investigating this I found the "keyboard and mouse" registry in "system preferences" will not open.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Is there any other remedy short of another Archive and Re-Install?
In the system library I have "Keyboard.prefPane" version 3.13. Clicking on it opens a blank "system preferences" page entitled "keyboard and mouse".

System Preferences will not open 10.10

After having some amusing issues with 10.10.1, one issue being that System Prefs wouldn't open, I decided to restore the system back to 10.10. Though I can't say yet that this has fixed all my problems, one glaring issue persists: System Preferences will not open. The icon in the dock will bounce for a good minute and "System Preferences" will show up in the upper menu bar, but the actual panel will never load up and the icon (upon right clicking on it) will eventually say "app not responding."
All in all:
I can access System Prefs in safe mode. I have attempted to remove systempreferences.plist. Nothing seems to show up in the console when attempting to boot System Prefs up (besides an excessively long hang report). I have repaired disk permissions. I have no idea when this started. Mac Pro (Early 2009). Am willing to do any and all of these things again.

System preferences will not open when selected from the apple in the upper left corner. My software is 10.6.8

I have problem with system preference is not responding

Is it just one System Preference, if so, which?
Try this: in Finder, select Go > Go to Folder...
copy (triple-click) and paste the following
~/Library/Preferences/
so that it looks like this
... and click Go.
In the window that opens, locate the following and drag it to the Desktop
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Restart your Mac.
Fixed?
If so, good, but you will need to recreate your system preferences all over again since there was something amiss with the last configuration.
If not, drag the file on the Desktop back to where it came and you're no worse off than when you began.
