System preferences will not open, system preferences will not open

I am trying to make changes in my system and can not get system preferences to open.  I have shut down, restarted, updated software with no changes.  It briefly opens with a blank screen and then closes.  HElp!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application (System Preferences) or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Please HELP! My accounts will not open in System Preferences it keeps saying System Preferences quit unexpectedly?!? It will not open at all.

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Select the System Preferences icon in that folder and press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in the Info window labeled Open in 32-bit mode. Uncheck it, if checked. Close the Info window and the Applications folder. Test.

After I click system preferences to change my screensaver, it will say loading images and the cursor will be loading. How do i fix this to be able to change my screensaver and not have my computer do this?

Try system preferences>desktop, click desktop tab. Click the Apple folders, iPhoto, or folders. Click the pic you want on the icon, it should put the pic as your wallpaper. You can change the picture if you change picture if you click it and the time.  Unless I don't understand your question.  ATB

I've been getting the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer". I can't open system preferences, disk utility, or Time Machine. I'm guessing it has something to do with my external hard drive, although it hasn't been touched lately, but I can't figure out how to solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?
    Thanks

  • Not opening system preferences after Mountain Lion upgrade

What I expereinced today was that I was unable to open system receiving and error about (Notifications, iCloud...) not being able to open and then needing to restart... upon hitting OK it gave the same message again. I went into appications using the finder and then clicked on the [system preferences] and then selected [more info] from the menu. The get info box said that the system preferences were running in 32-bit mode. I unclicked 32-bit mode and then tried running the offending system preferences again and it worked as expected. Apparently there is some kind of gotcha about running specific preferences in 32-bit mode in the new update?
I hope that this works for those of you running into what I experienced this morning.
    Peace

    Hi
Thanks for your replies. It isn't a gmail account - it's a domain account hosted by Domainmonster. Also my iCloud email is now intermittent :(
I've checked the SSL settings/authentication settings and everything is as it should be according to the email provider.  It's frustrating as it was working fine for exactly a week following the upgrade and then just stopped sending mail. Also, the intermittent nature of the problem on the iCloud account now suggests to me at least that this is a problem that isn't the users fault?
I've downloaded thunderbird and all my accounts are working perfectly through that so for the time being at least I'm staying with the upgrade and hoping that a future apple update might address the issue. From the reading around I've done this seems to be a problem some people are having that tends to be intermittent in nature and resolved temporarily but not completely at the users end of things.
I've given up for now thanks to the fact that Thunderbird is working and I can still access my accounts on my iPhone. Very frustrating though when things don't make sense :) I mean, if it was going to stop working I would expect it to have stopped when I upgraded - not functioned fine for a while afterwards and then just literally send a mail one minute and refuse to send the next five minutes later. Also with my new problem today of Mail and my .me account - randomly sending mail when it feels like it and stacking mails up in the outbox the next - just doesn't make sense to me :)
If anyone does figure out what's going on I'd be grateful for any ideas/suggestions.  Seems weird that all the email accounts function fine through thunderbird but not Mail. So far anyway :)

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

    Hi,
This should only occur if this is a NEW computer or your first sync and you have information from another computer.
Has this iPhone been synced with another computer before?
    Transferring Purchases; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
If you follow that link your Apps WILL be on your computer and any music you have brought......
Now, do not worry, even if you do accidentally delete your apps, you can download them again for free with your itunes store account, just keep in mind you will lose any saved data!
Follow this and hit continue, the only information that could get lost is any content (music, videos etc) synced from ANOTHER computer that WAS NOT brought from your account.
Hope this helps and makes sense....

  • Can not load any power point files, the Microsoft version will not work as well only open systems works

After upgrading to 10.8.3 I cannot load files into keynote, the apllication will freze about 75% of the load. My Microsoft Power Point application will load them but the when I try to play the presentation it will freeze. Only OpenSystems will load them and then play them with no problem. Can Any one tell me waht is going on? ...

    Hi Gary,
The presentations were created originally with PowerPoint. I have been using them on both KeyNote and PowerPoint with no problem, even after updating to MountainLion. Problems started at the 10.8.3 upgrade. The installation was an upgrade form Lion. Yes I mean Open Office, I am able to open the presentation with Open Office and play it with no problems.
The presentation gets loaded by Power Point and the Power Point freezes. Key Note can not even load it. Stops 3/4 of the way. This happens with ALL my presentations.
I want to thank you for your help.

  • If your iCloud freezes when open system preferences, please do the following

If your iCloud freezes when open system preferences, please do the following.
(What i mean is the following, Settings>iCloud then it will freeze before you entering email, then follow the steps below)
    turn off your iPhone.
log out from iCloud, in any device (Mac Book, iPad, iPod, PC, what ever,  Remember any device that you may used the account there).
turn on your iPhone, and try now to log in to iCloud. ( you should be OK to log in, and you can type email now before it is hangs)
    * if you tried these steps and you can type the email and password and it is still hanging after you click "Sign in" then you need to do the following.
create a new iCloud account from iCloud website with domain iCloud (for example, [email protected] , YOU SHOULD NOT USE OTHER DOMAINS LIKE GMAIL, HOTMAIL OR WHAT EVER TO CREATE THE ACCOUNT).
then go back and use the new iCloud email to log in in your iPhone. ( I hope by that time you will be OK (^_^)).
    BEST WISHES

First follow the instructions in this support article.
If the iPhoto library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the iPhoto application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

We have mac os x  10.6.8  I wanted to load iCloud but it is not in system preferences. Does that mean I cannot add it to my imac? If I can, what do I need to do?

You need 10.7.5 or later for iCloud.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • ICloud is not a system preference on my Mac, OS x Version 10,5,8, What di I need to do? I have iClod on my i phone

I am trying to install iCloud on my mac. Its an old computer. 2009. iCloud is not a System preference. Also i tunes is too old to download songs etc
    What can I do ?
I have all these functions on my i phone 5

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements. As you are running Leopard you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first, provided you have an Intel Mac, which presumably is the case. (However if you have a PPC Mac you cannot run Snow Leopard and cannot proceed further.)
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Safari 7.0.6 will not save my preferences (default webpage, turn off extensions)

    Hello,
I have been trying for months to get Safari to make my school website my default homepage instead of the apple start page as well as get Safari to remember the size I like my browser window. Nothing works. I can change it in preferences but as soon as I quit Safari it goes back to how it was. I have tried what others suggested and searched library for the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and I also tried turning extensions off and it just turns itself back on (no extensions show up anyway). Am I missing something? I'm running OS X 10.9.4

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
