Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

System Preferences will not open 10.10
After having some amusing issues with 10.10.1, one issue being that System Prefs wouldn't open, I decided to restore the system back to 10.10. Though I can't say yet that this has fixed all my problems, one glaring issue persists: System Preferences will not open. The icon in the dock will bounce for a good minute and "System Preferences" will show up in the upper menu bar, but the actual panel will never load up and the icon (upon right clicking on it) will eventually say "app not responding."
All in all:
I can access System Prefs in safe mode. I have attempted to remove systempreferences.plist. Nothing seems to show up in the console when attempting to boot System Prefs up (besides an excessively long hang report). I have repaired disk permissions. I have no idea when this started. Mac Pro (Early 2009). Am willing to do any and all of these things again.Start time: 16:29:30 12/19/14

i have a Mac Mini and 10.6.8 and my system preferences will not open how do i solve this?

After your try, open the Console app in the Utilities folder and at the time you tried look for log entry errors associated with the opening System Preferences and post them here. -
Odd bug: "keyboard and mouse" within "system preferences" will not open!!
After having to Archive and Re-Install yesterday and installing "X11", I have an odd problem:
- apple+i leads to crashing and restart of "Finder"
- when investigating this I found the "keyboard and mouse" registry in "system preferences" will not open.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Is there any other remedy short of another Archive and Re-Install?
In the system library I have "Keyboard.prefPane" version 3.13. Clicking on it opens a blank "system preferences" page entitled "keyboard and mouse".
Your help would be greatly appreciated!

can some one please give me a hand... I can not open my system prefence from and of the 3 way it can be opened. Is there any place on line that I could possibly reinstall the OS so that it can be functional?
Thanks for your response, and sorry it did not make sence... I wanted to know why my system prefence will not open. I click on it and absoltuley nothing happens. I try to back door it by right clicking to try and change my back ground picture, but that gives me a sound you would hear when the CPU or program won't let you do somthing. Maybe someone else has had the same problem and was able to fix it. I hope that clears it up.

iphoto on my used mac mini will not open my photos from my new macbook air, it says something about updating the software, but i checked and there arent any updates available... please help

I currently do not have an older version of iPhoto to test this on, but you might also try coping the Originals from the iPhoto Library of iPhoto 11.
To do that;
1. Right (control) click on the iPhoto Library in the Picture Folder on the MacBook Air
2. Select Show Package Content.
3. Click on the Originals Folder
4. Navigate to the disired Event or photos and copy those images to your Flash or External Drive, then copy those to the older version of iPhoto.
Beware do not move, add or delete anything in the iPhoto Library, Apple has intensionally hidden it in later versions to prevent people from messing things up. -
System preferences will not open
I have the macbook pro 13. the previous owner did something that is preventing me to open the system prefrences in the upper left or the dock station. The system prefrences screen will pop up in the middle of my screen and then dissapear. Sometimes there is a blue bubble on under the dock system prefrences icon but like I said it pops up and then dissappears or shuts down on its own. the screen turns off as fast as it opens. I have googled, and reserached and tried a few things but none are working.. I can't get into any of the prefrences to change things like the date and time or get into passwords to change the last owners name and personal information to change it all over to my name, etc.. Crappier part is I am in Afghan and this laptop does not have a disk to it for me to ust re-format it or re-install. I currently have version 10.7.2.
Did he delete something, or lock up this section.. This is me being a first time apple owner,, so any help would be great.. I have even held the control key down, clicked the dock icon and tried to select a specific section and same problem occurs,, pos up then shuts off. If I select a specific folder while holding the control button,, it will go to that selection and I can see for a split second I am in the folder but then it shuts down again.Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your first Mac!
Have you tried restarting?
If so, and the problem persists, then do this:
Go to the Finder and open a new window. On the left side, click on "Applications" and go down to "Utilities" and open "Disk utility". Click on your harddrive and then "Repair Permissions" (give it a few minutes to complete), then restart. See if System Preferences will open. If not, then do the following:
In a Finder window, click on your User name on the left (under the section labeled "Places"). Then click on "Library" then "Preferences" and then find the file called "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and delete it. Empty the trash and try again to launch System Preferences. Hope that works! Please post back whether it does or not so others can help if the problem is not solved. -
My system preference will not open.
First I have OSX 10.6.7. for some reason It will not open. I tried to follow some of the advice that I saw on previous post like deleting com.apple.systemprefence...... and other files from the comments but it still will not open. I need help please.
If you use any utility to clean system caches, stop, as that may impact your ability to launch various Apple applications.

Itunes program will not open when selected
Once I updated itunes 2 days ago I have been unable to open the program unless I have selected it 3 times. It does NOT freeze it just will not open. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes also however program still will not open on first try.
Try TS1717: iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues, or see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

Used migration assistant to set up new Macbook pro from old macbook pro. Many "profile" problems.
Will not even open "System Preferences" for user whose profile info was transferred. (Will for "Administrator")
Cannot use Firefox or Thunderbird, profile missing.
Help???Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to the application(s). Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report.

What preference file did you trash?
Your machine will run OS 10.4 Tiger fine but you will need to take advantage of the media exchange program to get Tiger on CD. I believe you can upgrade via firewire connection to another Mac with a DVD drive also. I have not upgraded my machines so I can't advise much in that department.
You can purchase Panther disks from sources such as ebay or AppleRescue etc. Make sure you purchase "full" retail install disks and not machine specific disks if you decide to go that route. Probably much cheaper than purchasing OSX Tiger disks and with the new OS coming out soon (10.5) would probably be a wiser buy.
You really need operating system disks to run Repair Disk from DiskUtility on the install disks anyways if the need arises. You really do need install disks!
If you post back exactly what you've done perhaps there might be a way out through troubleshooting. Did you trash the .plist for SystemPreferences or some other .plist?

System Preferences will not open now
I can't get the system preferences to open. It's showing in the dock and won't open either thru double click or by right click open. I went to the hard drive and found it listed there. Still won't open. We are NOT on a network. There are only two users and we normally don't mess with any of the stuff there except to change the desktop and screensaver photos. That's what I'm trying to do again, but it won't work. Any suggestions as to 1) how I can open my system preferences and 2) what caused this? We are novice users so pls consider that in your reply. Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot. If that doesn't help...
Go here. Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update This update includes *general operating system fixes* that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.
Even if you ran Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions already, do it again after you install this update.
