System prefernces Messed up

Hi I recently noticed that All the icons inside my system preferences are gone and that I have to search in the search bar if I want to find something.
This is really annoying because It wastes time when I'm at school and it is really hard to find everything.
I was wondering if any one can help me with this... I will attach a picture below so you can see what has happened

It took me a while to figure out what was the font name because it was downloaded from a list of "top 25 fonts for designer". And of course, it was free so... thank you for the help.

  • Changing System Language Messed up my Library

iTunes is so messed up and bloated at this point that I'm regularly using Spotlight and VLC to play music!
Anyway, I switched my System language from English to Japanese and now much of my 'Classical' genre I had assigned became 'クラシカル' per Apple's whim. When I double-click a song, 'poof' it disappears. So am I now expected to switch over to クラシカル because of Apple's bug? No, I just reassigned the new クラシカル genre back to 'Classical,' but in the meantime wasting my day and feeling resentful.
I was always a Mac user because Microsoft expected me to do things THEIR way, not mine. While I initially strongly applauded the iPhone, I see now how iOS has encroached upon the desktop/laptop users too and is increasingly boxing us in. Settings are meant to be 'Set' which hopefully means having to do that task only once. If Apple is aggravating its loyal customer base with a flagship application, I can't say things are boding well there in Cupertino, at least not for me.
Yes, I get it. Apple keeps 'updating' the library by going on the web based on some new action. But I do not want it to do that. Sometimes I want it to update the library, but I want to tell it when I need that done. This is not user-friendly, it's corporate-friendly.
P.S. I tried to update my profile computer to OS 10.9.3 and Apple hasn't even updated that database yet! What the....???

In all my attempts to screw up iPhoto, I don't think I've ever lost a photo that was in the damaged library to begin with. That you can see your pictures in Albums, but not in the Library view is highly irregular. Are the images you see in the albums the full-size images, or are they just thumbnails of the original (that is probably no longer in the library)?
If you've ever enhanced or cropped photos in your old library, that would explain the duplicates. When an image is altered, iPhoto squirrels the original away in case you ever want to revert back to the unaltered version. When the library is rebuilt, depending on the corruption, those originals become orphans. iPhoto treats them as "found" images in your library, and they would show up as duplicates.

  • System Update messed up monitor, temporarily

I ran system Updater and told it to install all the updates it came up w/ (one was the new iTunes, another was a System Update, don't really remember what the other ones were.  Well, it downloaded the stuff, then ran through the installation and then restarted.  When it restarted the monitor was all messed up.  The best I can explain is it looked like a theater curtain that has little lights at the bottom shining up the screen.  Basically, there were streaks of light and shadowy sections all along the bottom of the screen.  They extended about half way up the screen.  I shut the computer down, waited about 5 minutes and then restarted it and it's now normal again.  No idea what happened.  Any ideas?  Any ideas how to let Apple know of this issue?  I'm running a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 2 GB 677 mHz DDR2 SDRAM.  The computer is about 3.5 yrs old.  My system is now 10.6.8.
    Thanks,
    Kara

Go into Displays preferences and set the resolution to 1280 x 800. That should get rid of the black bars.

  • System got messed up... somehow

    Hello everyone,
So this isn't really how I had imagined my first post would turn out, but here we go.
    Little background
I am new to Arch, and to Linux in general. For a while now I've wondered and thought about switching, but never did. Then about a couple of months ago now, I decided I should, and have been working on it since then. Meaning that for a few weeks now, I am using Arch, inside a VM (Win7 host).
Things were going fine, I've been learning & loving it so far, but then!
    Don't die on me
Yesterday, at one point I opened a terminal (urxvt) and wanted to do a simple thing:
    $ sudo tail /var/log/nginx/foo.errors.log
but instead of being prompted for my password, I got a few error messages, alongside a bunch of wrong characters that were apparantly meant to be a filename or something, then sudo complained about not being able to stat something... unfortunately I didn't kept those error messages; my bad.
Anyways, then I noticed something happening - something that had actually happened before. That is, a few days back, I noticed that when moving a terminal window on my screen, there were some drawing issues. Moving the window from top-left to bottom-right, there were "parts" of it still left on at the top-left, the window wasn't fully/properly drawn on the bottom-right, and there were some bits in between. (It has happpened a couple of times actually.)
Very odd (also, I thought that was the kind of things that didn't happen with a compositing WM, and I'm runinng XFWM4 (XFCE) with compositor enabled... but I might be wrong? I don't really know about this...) and it eventually led to VirtualBox crashing. I'll admit I didn't really investigate it much, not sure why. I guess I thought/hoped it might just be an issue with the VM and, maybe, the fact that I run it with two screens (I have 2 monitors) both in fullscreen mode, and some video driver issue might have caused this. Not that it would be okay, but...
    To the point
Back to yesterday, where the same display issues were happening again. Except now, in (unrelated?) news I couldn't sudo either. Then I eventually tried to reboot, but when clicking "Log out" in XFCE nothing would happen. I could have "sudo reboot" only sudo didn't work. For the sake of it I tried "reboot" knowing it wouldn't work, except it failed for a different reason than I expected: command not found.
    So, cold reboot.
But I could not (re-)boot, because a lot more was missing, things like hostname or runlevel and more! This was getting freaky, so I quickly got salt and drew a circle around me, just in case.
Anyways, because I happen to have a little script running every night using rsync to backup pretty much the whole system, I figured it was time for a restore. And because it's a VM, it's quite easy to create a brand new disk, remove the old one, replace it with the new one, and go: I booted from the ISO and used rsync again to restore everything as it was in the morning.
I am here, so this (seems to) have worked.
    History repeats itself
So thankfully I had a backup (always backup, people!) and I have a running system again, with only little data loss (a few hours of work). That's good. But I have no idea what happened (or why), so I'm thinking it might/will happen again. Which is no good. Surely I'll still be doing backups, but that's far from an answer.
Now, I still have the old disk (i.e. the old .vdi file) so I did mount it (ro), to see. And this is what I get (upon mounting):
[ 571.990980] EXT4-fs (dm-3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
    [ 872.586681] EXT4-fs (dm-3): error count: 35
    [ 872.586702] EXT4-fs (dm-3): initial error at 1320758976: htree_dirblock_to_tree:587: inode 819: block 8970
    [ 872.586724] EXT4-fs (dm-3): last error at 1320760632: ext4_iget:5019: inode 15105
Also, if I now do a "ls /mnt/old/sbin" I find this in the log:
    [ 5449.028115] EXT4-fs error (device dm-3): ext4_iget:5019: inode #15105: comm ls: bad extended attribute block 3021702897
and the actual result/listing is prefixed with this:
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/sulogin: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/bootlogd: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/runlevel: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/killall5: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/fstab-decode: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/shutdown: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /mnt/old/sbin/halt: Input/output error
which leads me to think the disk is screwed up. Only, this isn't a real disk, but a virtual one. So, I'm thinking that hardware failure is then unlikely(*), meaning that it's probably something else, something still running/going on in my system, something that will screw things up again.
(*) Besides, I haven't had any problems with the physical disk where the .vdi is stored (which is also where Windows is installed), the SMART info say it's fine (and I even did copy that VDI file to another disk without problems).
So, is there anything I said that seems/is (completely) wrong? Does anyone have any idea as to what could be the cause? Or what I can do to try and find out?
    Bonus
Completely offtopic, but looking at /var/log/boot I see it ends like so:
    Tue Nov 8 16:12:18 2011: :: Starting vbox-service [BKGD] :: Starting network [B
    Tue Nov 8 16:12:19 2011: :: Starting D-BUS system messagebus [BUSY] [DONE]
    Tue Nov 8 16:12:20 2011:
    ..is this normal?
To be clear: When I said I have a backup, I got one from this morning, but also one from earlier this month, and it already ended that way then. So this has nothing to do with the problems I described here. Still, it looks odd, plus there are a few more things (daemons) that are started (BKGD) after that... so I just wonder if this is normal or not.
Alright, that's it. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -jacky

I think your post is too long . Try to stick to the point and people will be more inclined to help you because it requires less work on their part. Also use a title less vague!
You say sudo doesn't work but you don't post the error messages. They would be helpful.
The drawing problems are most probably unrelated and are probably caused by the VMWare driver; I'd try disabling compositing.
"Log out" not working in Xfce: search the forum. Several people have had this problem very recently.

  • System prefernces im stuck with the same screensaver for eternity!!

I have had my macbook now for about 3 months and everyhting has been PERFECT!! but just recently i have been haveing truoble changing my screensaver.
Evreytime i go to change my setting(for the screensaver) my system perfences quits, then i try to reopen it again and it quits again and asks me to report it to apple. i have and i even call them with my apple care but it still does it.( this all started after i change my scrrensaver to ituens artwork) Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this??
ANY feedback would be awesome. thanks
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yep sure have. It seems like when this comes up it usually is associated to using the iTunes screensaver. Try running a Spotlight search for a .plist file that contains both screensaver and iTunes. I don't have one since I've never ran the iTunes screensaver so I can't say specifically what it would be called. But it should be something like com.apple.iTunesscreensaver.plist
If you find something along those lines Trash that .plist file and try going to your screensaver system preferences again.

  • Strange icon in system prefernces

It's weird, but within system preferences, i have a strange icon which seems to be corrupt. the icon is the startup disc icon. it seems to have enlarged and the words "start up disc" have disappeared, because the icon has enlarged. I wondered if there is a way to reinstall the system prefs application or if there is a folder where i can replace the icon. I wanted to attach a pic to this topic but can't. but if anyone wants to help i can email the pic which a have screen captured.
Please help. It doesn't seem to effect my OS but it is a glitch and would love to sort it.

    Hi Leigh!
    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract what you need from your Install Disk.
    But 1st do these...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then boot from the HD, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.

  • After 10.6.4 Update - "Audio"-Tab in System-Profiler messed up

    Hey everybody,
I installed the 10.6.4 Combo-Update right after it's been released. Everything works fine but one "cosmetic" bug. In "System-Profiler > Audio" it seems like something really got screwed.
I posted my problem in other forums and it seems like everybody else is having that problem, too - right after installing 10.6.4 Update.
Here you can see an image that shows what I mean:

  • Screen sharing is not listed in system prefernces?

hi, I am trying to setup screen sharing so I can use my computer from iPod with vnc,
I know I need to enable screen sharing from system prefs. But it wont give the option.
    this is what's listed:
    personal file sharing
    windows sharing
    personal web sharing
    remote login
    FTP access
    apple remote desktop
    printer sharing
    xgrid.
    but not screen sharing

No BDAqua, Remote Login is for ssh, screen sharing is another name for VNC, and to start the built in Tiger VNC server enable Apple Remote Desktop, check out the "Access Privileges" screen and tick at least one user and the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" option choosing a strong password. You may then have to do some port forwarding/firewall configuration depending on your setup. There is also a free highly regarded VNC server called Vine Server which gives you more options, and is IMHO less buggy. Be aware however that VNC is inherently insecure unless you do it via an ssh tunnel.

Usually this type of thing is caused by code errors that DW is more picky about than the browsers.
Run your page through the validator here: http://validator.w3.org/
Clean out any errors reported. If the problem persists after cleaning the code of errors, post back and perhaps we could take a look at your code to see if there is anything specific causing issue.

  • Is my power system completely messed up?

I've had my MacBook for about a year, and I've been having problems with it since the holidays last year. The battery was no longer recognized and after taking it to the Apple store, they said there was water in my computer! I have no clue how it could've gotten in there, I'm very careful with what is around my MacBook. They were going to charge me to get it fixed but I didn't have the money and instead just opted to keep it plugged in all the time.
Recently, however, the green light at the end of the power cord is either flickering or not coming on if its plugged into the computer, even when plugged into an outlet. Sometimes the light stays green even when its not in the outlet! This happens occasionally and it will work for a few hours, even days before messing up again.
What has happened? I have Apple Care so the service thing is extended but what can I do? Will I have to pay to get it all fixed? Is it just the power cord? What has happened to my poor computer?!

Have you done the battery update.
You might also try to reset the SMC/PMU
You might be able to get a battery replacement if you call the number in the update. The battery warranty has been extended an extra year.

  • How do I fix my system prefernces

Hi some how my system preferences are gone, can someone help me

Look in your Applications folder and if System Preferences are there, if so drag it to the Dock. I suspect you are referring to System Preferences icon in your Dock, that is only an alias and not the actual application. Where the app actually resides is in the Applications folder. If I am correct and you have successfully dragged from the Applications folder to the Dock you can then drag the old icon (the one with the slash through it) off the Dock.

  • Grub system boot messed up after windows crash

I have a dualboot system with Win XP and Arch. Yesterday Windows crashed while i was listening to music. Since then, when i boot my computer Grub throws an error message (i think it's error 17) and doesn't start the bootmanager. But if i boot from a normal Ubuntu-Live-CD an choose "boot from first harddisk" i get my grub manager and i am able to boot normally.
I tried to fix this by manually reconfigure grub like this:
    1. Pop in the Live CD, boot from it until you reach the desktop.
    2. Open a terminal window or switch to a tty.
    3. Type "grub"
    4. Type "root (hd0,6)", or whatever your harddisk + boot partition numbers are (my /boot is at /dev/sda7, which translates to hd0,6 for grub).
    5. Type "setup (hd0)", ot whatever your harddisk nr is.
    6. Quit grub by typing "quit".
    7. Reboot.
    (taken from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … stcount=2)
It seems that my hdX is different to my sdX labels. sda is my linux harddisk, and sdc is my windows drive. But if i type root (hd0,0) i get "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7", which means that this is an NTFS drive. So i tried root (hd2,0) (in my menu.lst, booting arch is also defined with hd2,0) and then i get "Error 21: Selected disk does not exist".
    Now two questions:
    1) Why is the labeling different? Why isn't sda1 = hd0 and so on?
    2) How to restore my boot process? (this is slightly more important )

    Alp wrote:
I think you both understood me wrong.
First, i don't need to alter the menu.lst, because grub doesn't show the boot choose menu at all. It just prints error 17 without any chance of doing something.
Second, i know the naming procedure. But obviously in my case hd0 and hd2 are switched, so that sda = (hd2) and sdc = (hd0). I don't know why.
well - you referred to 'sda1' as 'hd0' in your first post ...
as for the remapping of drives, there's always:
    map (hd0) (hd2)
    map (hd2) (hd0)

  • My entire iCloud mail system is messed up. I have worked on this for days. It works sometimes after I restart my computer and then just stops for no reason. In addition when the mail stops it refuses to let me reboot my iMac. Any ideas?

I'm praying somebody here has an idea to help me. iCloud has suddenly gone nuts on my iMac. It works only when it wants to work and then stops for no reason. When it stops I am no longer able to click the mail icon and open any mail even the old stuff that was there. No changes were made to my computer. This all started out of the blue. When the mail stops working it will not close out to allow me to restart my computer. It won't even allow a forced quit. No changes were made to my machine. My iPhone still get mail but only after I click the mail icon. It does not pull mail in and show how many new emails I have like it did before. I have a me.com email if that helps. Any ideas would be truly appreciated.
